Re:versus DreamcastAgreed. I've been playing Sonic Adventure on my new Dreamcast all weekend and it's simply breathtaking. Miscellaneous tidbits here
N64 is a nice console, but after scaring off Square, Nintendo had better come up with one hell of a launch for Dolphin (and no, I don't mean Super Mario Brothers 128 or Super Mario Tic-Tac-Toe or any of that other crap). Nintendo could screw up a wet dream.
The Playstation didn't have any games that interested me. I'm hoping this will change for the PS2, but I'm not holding my breath.

Q-LinkMy dad and I were alpha-testers of QuantumLink before it was first introduced (Of course I was like 8 years old at the time)..
One of my present-day co-workers was one of the original architects of Quantum's network, and pointed out to me the other day how chat rooms in AOL's People Connection are still limited (by design) to 25 people, a limitation imposed some 15 years ago to keep buffers in people's 300 baud Commodore modems from overflowing with data and disconnecting the user.
;>He also told me how Steve Case was a lowly Marketing Drone in those days.. Case usually kept to himself, unless he was asking to borrow some money for booze.

linux.orglinux.org faded into obscurity after the whole LSA fiasco last year. After linux.com's debut, I'm sure even more people deserted linux.org.
It is kind of weird reading that article though.. Seeing as how "Linux Online" is the name of one of the forums in an upcoming site I'm working on.. (:

PostgreSQLJust as a sidenote, I've found PostgreSQL to be a dream to set up and use. I'm currently using it in the development of my news site software, and I am most impressed with its performance.

N$II think their only goal is to piss people off at this point. They should shoot the marketing guy who came up with that idea.
"Hey! Let's sell ad space on a government-owned database! That'll further the conception that it's our property!"
Notwork Delusions strikes again. They're rising quickly on my "companies that must die" list, joining the ranks of Microsoft, Bell Atlantic, and UUNet..

AOL ChannelIf it's anything like the real AOL, the picture will be letterboxed and it'll have a commercial ticker running across the top and bottom of the screen. Let's just hope AOL doesn't decide to televise their chat rooms, though..

NT Event log settingsFrom Microsoft's security site comes this bulletin (it's a Word document). Page 30 (of 37) has this to say about crashes and Audit Logs
- Shutdown option on Full Audit Log
In a C2 configured system, auditing system of Windows NT provides an option to the administrator to shut down the system when security audit log is filled up. To enable this, use the following key value in the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contr
o l\Lsa:- Name: CrashOnAuditFail
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1
With this setting, the system will shutdown itself when the audit log full is detected. The value in the registry is reset to 2. When the system is rebooted, it only allows the administrators to log on to the machine (locally or remotely). They will be required to clean the audit log (or archive it), reset the value to 1 and reboot the system before any other user is allowed to log on.
The log is whatever size the administrator chooses. By default, the logs are limited to 512KB (Max setting 4,194,240 KB), and events older than 7 days get overwritten (this can be turned off). It is very easy to change these settings, and obviously Microsoft has done this. Then (as above) NT automatically crashes when any of the event logs fill up (System, Security, or Application).
For those of you interested enough to read this document, it is referring to NT4 service pack 0. A lot of the holes that it would have you manually patch are automatically fixed when you apply the various service packs. (Remote access to the registry, for example.)
My favorite quote from this
.doc: "...the default out-of-the-box configuration is highly relaxed, especially on the Workstation product. This is because the operating system is sold as a shrink-wrapped product with an assumption that an average customer may not want to worry about a highly restrained but secure system on their desktop..."I'm sorry, these pictures are so good I gotta post a link again. Hey, it deals with NT security, right?
Note: I'm not a MCSE, but I play one at work.

MoviesOne thing Katz misses on is that the theater restrictions are still being implemented on a voluntary basis. I can see what the fuss would be if this were a law of some sort, but it's simply a suggestion that some businesses are choosing to follow.
I was in a local theater this past weekend to see Deep Blue Sea , which was an average movie, but was also rated R. Looking around the theater I could see quite a few unaccompanied under-17 persons attending the showing. So much for the big "we honor age restriction guidelines" banner hanging out front, eh? Theaters just want your money. That's the bottom line.
Just remember, if they ever put Schindler's List back in the theaters, your kids won't be allowed to see it because it's rated R, and they're under 17. So much for learning from the past.

Microsoft
Well, it's not exactly a squirt gun, but it's close..

Um, sorry.Regardless of what big business may tell you, we have the right to link to anything we damn well please. They do not have the right to limit our freedom to link via unenforcable, implied content licensing agreements. They, however, being the providers of the content at the destination of the link in question, have the right to block based on the HTTP_REFERER string or other means.
It's time for the studios and media to wake up and realize that the public isn't their bitch anymore.
By the way, Universal, do you plan on releasing anything resembling a good movie in the near future? Or do you intend on blowing all your dough on legal battles?

Mmmm.. BorlandI hope Borland succeds with its development tools. Competing with Microsoft on such a fundamental product must be hell.
Overall, I think the Microsoft Developer Conference was a bit more lively, though. (:

Internet Payphones? How long before someone hacks one to spawn a shoutcast server whenever someone picks up the phone? (:
Seriously though, if they expect any serious person to use it for Internet access for any reasonable period of time, they'd better add reclining seats in front of them.

Linux Compatible HardwareJust made this Linux Compatible Hardware logo up in about 5 minutes..
It'd be great to be able to see something of the like on new hardware when you buy it. I've lost count of how many times I've walked into a CompUSA and forgot which brands and models of hardware are supported.

Do we have no choice but to accept new rules?
Re: http://douglas.min.net/~drw/nsinew.txt
At the end is this bit : "By submitting this query, you agree to abide by this policy."
So, if these are shown AFTER submitting the query does it enforce our acceptance - what if we did not want to accept them? Surely there must some law against this?

hmmm..
That hack looks an awful lot like Microsoft's new homepage..

HmmmThus every Tivoli implementation would require Linux.
Is that necessarily a good thing? It'd be nice to see freedom of OS choice prevail over freedom of Linux distribution choice for their application. I'm all for Linux, don't get me wrong, but I don't think forcing people into using it (or anything) is a good thing.
Don't want to turn into a you-know-whosoft, you know..

ack!Oh no! I just noticed somebody in the crowd at Linus's talk!!

interestingThat's a pretty interesting incentive to get people working on documentation.. Just curious though, is there much more to GNOME programming that's not covered under GTK programming?
BTW, the FSF is listed in Microsoft's Business Planner in Office 2000. Never thought I'd see that happen in a million years. Way to go!

hmmm
Just curious, what are the chances that MS would get a hold of a majority of Redhat's shares? Are there laws to prevent them from doing this?
-
Re:RedHat's Response is typical MICROSOFT!
Don't worry, I don't think Redhat tried to pull a Microsoft, the headline probably just scrolled off.

HehSilly MIT.. You should browse through their hacks gallery some day. Lots of fun stuff in there.

Microsoft Labs Strikes AgainVital, involuntary muscles, like the heart and the diaphragm, are not affected because they are protected by a greater thickness of body tissue.
Still, I'd think taking a shot to the back of the head from one of those things could seriously ruin your day.

Microsoft
Honestly, I don't think Microsoft will ever open their source to any usable degree. Their past tactics have shown that they're only interested in everything being proprietary to themselves.
-
Well..
If you want to call it GNU/Linux, fine. Don't force your opinion on everyone else.
-
I'll believe it when i see it
It'd be great if Microsoft did release the source, but knowing them, they'd screw it up by putting it under a no-modifications license or something. It'll be interesting to see how this whole thing progresses.
-
MicrosoftThey're going to try to use thin appliance type servers to compete with the Threat that Linux poses to them
"Thin appliance type servers"? If they're a small office, they can just use a spare workstation as a server by installing FreeBSD or Linux on it. No need to buy some special device suited for a special purpose.
Not that I think Windows 2000 will pose any threat in this area, mind you..
-
Well THAT would explain it..Take a closer look at that picture...

Next: Slashdot buys SalonThen Red Hat publically admits that they bought Slashdot last year

Microsoft ConspiracyIt has to be Microsoft behind all the bullying, seeing as how the only things segfault seems to make fun of are M$ and Linux. And I doubt Linus is bullying them.
Microsoft has that Windows 2000 deadline to meet. Why don't they work on that?

Why not just set up an NNTP server? There's already at least one up and running. Screenshot
The two main problems why I haven't gone public with mine are:
1) No sensible way to implement slashdot's banner advertisements
2) Comment/story copyright -
