the internet worked when it was invented without advertisers so it can work again, perhaps it would be a nicer place to be when the financial incentives for creating content are removed, maybe writing will go back to its roots as an ARTFORM

GNUstep is a free implementation of the OpenStep specification by NeXT and SUN in 1994. It is really good now. The InterfaceBuilder (Gorm) is great. The Foundation classes are finished long ago, and the AppKit works very well too. Give it a try, Live CD

The Nokia 6230. You can put up to a gig mmc card into it (it comes with 32mb, I use a 512mb) and you have a nice little mp3 player. The Nokia headphones are terrible but you can mod them and use your own. I use a pair of Sony e888s and the sound is fantastic. Plus when you get a phone call you can patch it trough to the headphones and use the mic on the wire, the little button will switch to the next song otherwise. Plus you can use mp3s both as ringtones and as your alarm clock.

I'm glad I saw this thread.

First, check out GeniusTrader, which is a very usable tool for backtesting strategies.

A friend of mine and I are writing software for backtesting options trading strategies. It will also be GPLed and some of the architecture is based on the way GeniusTrader did things. GeniusTrader is written in Perl and optsys is being written in C++.

optsys, or what's been done of it (it's in maaaaaaaajor pre-alpha state right now, most features aren't even working yet) is available here, but since I'm running the server on my home PC, it's only up about 14-18 hours a day. GeniusTrader, however, is immediately usable and they have quite a developer/user community now.

Ummm, do people need to be told what is wrong or right? There is a big difference between google and spyware companies and that that is, google is here to stay it needs to protect its reputation. Where as spyware companies don't have to worry about that IF the heat gets too hot (in most cases the heat doesn't get too hot as some users actually think spyware like gator and bonzai buddy are usefull) they can up and change the name of their company and continue to do what they do.

The the biggest problem with spyware is that the average user doesn't care or doesn't want to care about spyware.

In the mean time I just user a hosts file from these folks, it just helps me keep away form most of the crap out there.

This keeps me away from I would say 90% of the crap out there. Everyone should get one, there is nothing like it.
