Re:Success?!?!
I'm so glad you asked that. This has been on my mind for quite some time, for some odd reason. Dvorak wrote about MorphOS (press release here, or you can go straight to the PDF here) quite a while ago, with much enthusiasm: "So far, I like what I see."
At the time this was written, I had no idea what he was talking about. I started watching for news on MorphOS, but of course stuff happened. Way back when I subscribed to PC Magazine, I read his article for information. Now, I follow the Slashdot posts for entertainment.

Re:Plug plug plug
Why not also mention what a con-artist company it is?

or what OpenBSD thinks of Genesi?

Re:Why does this scam get so much coverage?
I'm not sure but I think your thinking of MorphOS (or at least they have done the same thing), which is sort of an unofficial AmigaOS on PPC which runs "Classic Amiga" code. MorphOS also seems to be violating the GPL (not releasing sources to their modified GCC versions).

Mod parent up
I did a little snooping and found

on the developers license for morhpos
So i would say if they are using GNU licensed code , like a GCC version for morphOS then they seem like a rather heavy violater
after doing some more reading i discoverd this
http://www.morphos.net/
morphos.net where many morphos developers are rather irate over lack of payment
Something odd going on in MorphOS land not doubt -
Looks pretty cool
David Gerber has received a lot of flack regarding the unfortunate MorphOS situation and IMO he now deserves a lot of credit and praise for giving something away he had anticipated to get paid for!
Good news for MorphOS fans and probably useful to the AROS team as well! -
Re:Good Riddance
You mean this MorphOS?

Re:Gentoo, definatelyusing gentoo on a risc processor kicks arse, those 231MHz can crunch numbers like crazy
Yellow dog is pretty nice (well the logo is) but your stuck with rpm hell, .. debian has its usual pro and cons, ..
i had my gentoo system finished (base2 to X) in under a day , but i dont use gnome nor kde bloat so that will account for a lot.
My personal top3:- Gentoo
- GNU/Debian
- Yellow Dog
And ofcourse; if you're thinking bout alternative OS's on powerpc MorphOS should be mentioned

Re:Shame Eyetech is the monopoly hardware supplier
-
Re:there's always AROS
There's also MorphOS, which is (give or take) AmigaOS for PPC then taken further. Not open-source, but it's an option.
-
You are wrong Screenshots of MorphOS look here
No that's partially true. There ARE indeed new Amiga Hardware either in the AmigaONE or the Pegasos II. It's a new PowerPC architecture with industry standard formfactor and components. I have one here running MorphOS a native PowerPC Operating System with full AmigaOS 3.1 API compatibility + MC680x0 JIT for emulating old Amiga programms in full speed (even faster)
For some cool ScreenShots go to my Web page Here the Link or for more look at MorphZone (top right Image Gallery).

Re:Amiga zealots.
Yes, the Amiga is dead and buried. The story is a bit misleading.
"Port Mozilla to AmigaOS and similar/compatible OSes" would probably have been more accurate.
AmigaOS might get a chance to live on in version 4, on off the shelf 3rd party hardware, if the company that whimsically calls itself "Amiga Inc." would only give it a chance instead of actively doing all they can to kill it in its cradle. Then there's things like the API compatible MorphOS and the open source AROS.
And no, Lionel Ritchie and skinny ties have never been great. -
Re:Duke Nukem?
Have you seen that hardware? It's five-year-old PowerPC G3 stuff and it doesn't even sound like it's in full production yet.
The "AmigaOne" hardware is out, and includes a G4 version. The problem is AmigaOS 4, which as you say seems like a perfect example of vapourware (it's been promised since summer 2000 IIRC).
Amiga is truley the kings of old school vaporware.
Amiga Inc the company, perhaps, but not the Amiga (ie, the computer) market. For example, if you want new machines, there's MorphOS and the Pegasos (Amiga compatible computers which are as close as say OS X is to MacOS; they just don't own the Amiga trademarks).

Re:So why should I use SkyOS, and not GNU/Linux?
Actually, there really isn't a great reason to use Sky OS over Linux or BSD... and that's not the point. Sky OS is one of many smaller projects whose primary purpose is to satisfy the hobby needs of the creator... Kind of like where Linux was when Linus decided his schoolwork was too boring.
There are many other examples out there. Contiki, Triangle Os, and many others.
There are also Open Source, commercial, and potentially useful hobbyist systems out there. However, if you are looking for the most comprehensive, useful desktop suite, look elsewhere. All of these Os's are unique and well-intentioned, but very few are actually practical.
Practicality is not the point. Curiosity is the point. What would a different implementation look like? What if all the graphics subsystems were contained in the kernel? How would a real-time OS feel to the user? These questions can't be answered by just releasing a new X theme, and there aren't very many people curious enough to find out.
These people are true geeks... Software for software's sake. Kudos to you all.

Re:Amiga
The Amiga's still around, as are various AmigaOS clones.

Re:Future of Amiga?
> Eyetech is building the hardware
...
Eyetech designs, decides and builds nothing.
Eyetech is a distributor, and has chosen to market this upcoming (maybe) board, which looks like it's Mai Logic's successor to their Teron CX and PX boards, under the "AmigaOne" trademark which is licensed from Amiga, Inc. With regards to AmigaOS and the hardware it'll run on, AInc does nothing but license IP.
> ... and Hyperion the software (PPCBoot ...
PPCBoot is dead, long live U-Boot. And it's not made by Hyperion. Hyperion is a rather new contributor to this open source project by making it support the Teron boards.
> Certain Amiga clone vendors ...
There are no more Amigas, and thus there are no Amiga clones. The Amiga is dead, thank $DEITY, and if it weren't for artificially added market restrictions AmigaOS could finally take advantage of a third party hardware market. Well, it can, but it's not allowed to.
OTOH, there are AmigaOS "clones", or rather new OSes providing AmigaOS API compatibility.
MorphOS and the open source AROS. Maybe that's what you were thinking about. -
Re:What is MorphOS?
MorphOS isn't unix based and currently contains an "abox" which let you run the system friendly old amiga os programs. Read up on morphos website.

Nothing, the Amiga on the other side..."What expectations did you have for today's PC, 10 years ago and how does the reality match up? What do you expect from computing, 10 years from now?"
PC? PCs sucked, Amiga was THE machine.
Therefor my expections for PCs was uhm, nothing actually, DOS and Windows sucked, the PCs was expensive and boring. Why would I expect anything from that?
On the other side the A1200 and A4000 had been released, so I guess I would have some crazy thought if you had asked me where it would end in 10 years. But as we all know Commodore screwed it all up, and todays is even worse.
It's so weird how the death of a computer platform can stop the whole computer evolution
;). Todays PCs are no more than last decades Amigas =)AMIGA RULES, PC SUXX! Btw, keep up the good work Genesi (Creators of the Pegasos PPC platform which ships together with MorphOS) and of course the AROS-guys.

Re:So your analogy is pure crap?
Duh. The original post about the 8MHz amiga is correct...'cause you can't run jack shit on the 'new amiga'. Hah.
He may be wrong to mention the AmigaOne, but the original post was still wrong. First of all, no one cares about 8MHz A500s since the OS and software runs quite happily on Amigas with CPUs up to a 66MHz 68060. Secondly, it could utilise PPC accelerators that Amigas can have (up to a 233MHz 604). Thirdly, MorphOS (an Amiga compatible OS, which is also a valid target for this prize) runs on the Pegasos which comes with a 600MHz G3. Lastly, one could point out Amithlon which runs AmigaOS on a PC at speeds far greater than any 68060 Amiga.
The first of these would probably still be slow for Mozilla, but the rest should run it fine I would have thought.

Re:amiga?
It is compatible with all existing Amiga software.
Note that certain applications such as demos or games actually execute on UAE. According to the MorphOS overview page, they "believe that UAE is good enough to provide the functionality for applications that demand very true custom chip hardware emulation. Demos and Games are programs that are outdated very fast and they don't play such an important role to set the direction of future OS development", so no Protracker and Technological Death running in native mode. I wonder what happens with games/demos that require AGA?
