Re:Newspapers say yes, please!
Late 90s.
ah, thanks.
And it didn't roll up. The screen was solid.
Do you mean the prop or what it was imagined to be? The imagined part had a roll-out screen. Check out the scissor mechanism on the prop.
EFC was a good show in season 1, and then they dumbed it down and it was boring.
Agreed! Such wasted potential. I suppose if Gene were around it would have been good.

I've been there once...
... and I snapped a quick photo on the phone I snuck in. What the hell are they doing, anyways?

Re:It's not a newspaper
I do remember a sci-fi show (don't remember which one) in which the portable computers were held in one hand by a handle on the bottom and the top part could be any real shape, but it had a screen that could be rolled out of the side of the device while the device itself had the buttons for using it.

Mike Damone? Is that you?

Re:hah..
Ok, the AC above me is probably going to get marked a troll, and though a bit off topic to the original post, is nonetheless a little bit on mark:

Re:Where was Al Gore when Mars needed him?
Sort of a Mel Johnson in Total Recall role, without so much condescension?

roll up screenThe first is getting bigger, but there's only so much room to grow, especially if you want to keep the form factor within reasonable limits so that the damn thing will fit in your pocket.
Earth Final Conflict global communicator (bottom of page) Obviously this is just the prop without the special effect, but with a flexible screen that rolled up into the handle, we could have decent size displays in devices that fit comfortably in a pocket. -

V-ger was already reclaimed. It turned evil, but our boys on the USS Enterprise took care of it. Star Trek

Re:While you are there, Cmdr Taco"Novi? No "V" and no No VI! But maybe Emacs, and a few eMACS and iMACS and UMAX. No MiniMacs. Yes MiniMe: Verne Troyer is guest of honor! We are serving him Mac and cheese. "
There, does that clear it up for you? And since it is a SciFi AND Linux convention, Nichelle Nichols will be dressed as Ubuntu instead of Uhura.

Re:What do they want to hear?
Right now the human race seems to think that whatever they say is worth listening too, much like stories posted by people on slashdot, in their webblogs, or this very comment. But sufficiently advanced minds aren't always interested in these things.
Especially when they're stories about how to talk to aliens, who probably aren't even listening, because to them we've still got about 10,000 years to go before we're sufficiently advanced to be worth bothering.
So I think a better way to go about it is, what could we send to an advanced civilization that would be interesting to them? Not to us.
Exactly. I can't think of a single thing on this planet that would be particularly interesting to aliens, except perhaps the natural resources. Think V.

Re:BS
Saved by the Bell showed us this is a bad idea...inevitably, the tape/CD will end up in the hands of some large guy who then wants to do things to you in uncomfortable places.

Reality Distortion! Most companies would say they're having a production problem! Not Steve Jobs! They can't sell them because they've sold too well!
That's a classic!
What do you expect from someone who funded his company with the proceeds from a criminal act!

Re:Liquid Metal
Hey - there are possibilities.
I don't think either option would be inherantly bad. (Until the unit goes bad - like all AI eventually must - I'd rather try outrun a knife than a plasma gun) -
Already been done...
I've already seen this done. Just look here. The kid that comes with it, though, is hyper-annoying.

Bravo
In a world where the right to privacy is quickly giving way to nosier and nosier laws and regulations, it is quite refreshing to see a company with so much to lose fighting to maintain the privacy of their customers. Say what you will, but SBC is taking quite a risk.
Heh, I don't normally gush like this, but I have to say that I am honestly very impressed by this move. Unless this is just a ploy to gain more customers concerned with their KaZaA, er, habits. In that case, well, I'm still impressed. Brilliant marketing ploy!
Wait, SBC isn't actually OCP or anything is it? No? Okay cool. Power to the peop- er, to the customers! -
Re:Egads!`
That's actually Lucifer, second in command on the basestar that Baltar is given by the Cylon Imperious Leader to track down and destroy the last of humanity.

Re:Egads!`
I seriously initially I read that as fleeing the Cylon tranny
They were. Haven't you seen the Imperious Leader? -
Re:Great Series - NOT
Ha ha!!!! Birds of feather really do flock together. See my other post in this very thread. Mine took longer because of the links.
Wonder woman was a great sci-fi babe of that era. Another babe was Erin Grey as Wilma in Buck Rogers. She still looks great and is still the subject of much lust (there is a yahoo group devoted to her). She signs photos at the sci-fi cons (I need to go to one). Pam Hensley was another babe on Buck Rogers.
There were other space babes too - Battlestar Galactica babes not to mention princess Leia.
Everything a teenage geek could love - science fiction and space babes. It would seem the producers of these shows knew well what their target audience wanted.
Ahh, the memories. -
Re:The worst of the bunch?
Massively off-topic, but here goes:
Land of the Lost
V Series
To me, some of the Visitors in the TV series resembled Sleestaks. The producers of the series apparently borrowed whatever reptilian costumes they could find for the extras. -
Seinfeld...
Hmmm, so if you wanted to talk to someone on the phone with a deaf person, you could do what Jerry and George did here, and cover your mouths with tissues, etc while you talk.
All of life's puzzles can be solved by Seinfeld... -
First contact - Consume, Obey, Reproduce
Consume, Marry and Reproduce, Obey.
Kind of makes you wonder if first contact really has been made and Disney, MS, & co. are using They Live as the template. Best fist fight on film. -

Who really cares about the Dental Party candidate for President?
You, sir, are an Anti-Dentite. -
Morlock vs EloiThat's the problem with a beautiful user-created-and-operated operating system, it's also user-marketed, and we grubby Morlocks have a hard time writing in market-speak, much less making the 7 AM marketing meeting...
Wow, I wonder how many Slashdot readers are too young to know about that movie.
You raise a good point though. It is too easy to look at the world through a single lens. To the Eloi, we must look like monsters. It is too bad a sequel was not made to show what changes were made when the Eloi started working. Also, the Morlocks were caught by surprise with the resistance. If they were more intelligent and had machinery available, would the Eloi escape next time?
