Where is the source?
Interestingly enough there is no source directory under: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/re

Re:Open source
Out of curisity, what do you consider "quickly"?
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vul nerabilities.html#Firefox
Let's look at the most recent vulnerability there, MFSA-2005-56. Unfortunately, the details are being hidden until July 20th. However, we can see the Bugzilla report numbers. The first, 294795, won't let me view it. But if we view 294796, the bug created right after we see it was created on May 19th. Nearly 2 months ago.
Is 2 months "quickly"?
You seem to be blindly making assumptions without bothering to check the facts.
This is NOT evidence that Open Source fixes bugs quickly. If anything, it proves that just like Closed source, they can keep the bugs quiet and sit on them as long as they like. -
Re:Open source
You think so? Check out the patch list for FF 1.05
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vul nerabilities.html#Firefox
12 vulnerabilities in this patch, the oldest was created in APRIL! And it's marked as high severity.
The newest we don't know, because Mozilla is keeping it hidden until July 20th, but if you take the Bugzilla report number, and add one to it you can get the bug that was created directly after it, and that was created in MAY!
So yes, Mozilla DOES sit on critical bugs for months. -
Thunderbird updates?
I don't see any Thunderbird updates. When I go to the site it's still 1.0.2 as well as the update tool in the program itself.
Their ftp http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird /releases/ doesn't have anything either. -

Or try the OS-agnostic link. -
Non-security fixes in Firefox 1.0.5
Here's some good info that colfer from this MozillaZine thread dug up:
1.0.5 is mainly a security fix, but I have seen a bunch of non-security fixes creep in also, such as removing the default checkbox "yes" for "make firefox my home page." This looks like a big cleanup for the 1.0.x branch, before 1.1 takes over.
I don't know about the security fixes, besides the medium-risk frame/window spoofing thing (with 1.0.4, you should not open untrusted sites at the same time as sensitive sites...). Here are the non-security fixes (non-security as it seems to me) checked in since 1.0.4:

I don't know about the security fixes, besides the medium-risk frame/window spoofing thing (with 1.0.4, you should not open untrusted sites at the same time as sensitive sites...). Here are the non-security fixes (non-security as it seems to me) checked in since 1.0.4:

Re:The problem of course
FYI there are probably many solutions to this, but I've found one to my liking. It's in the form of a Firefox Extention called 'Download Manager Tweak'. It can be found at https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.ph

The Back and Forward arrows (KDE - vs. Longhorn)
I don't know if someone saw this before, but the back and forward arrows in Longhorn are EXACTLY the same than the KDE Crystal (take a look on the comparison)

Googlebar Google's Bar
Googlebar (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.p
h p?id=33) is so much better -
Re:Too late...
Heh, I highlighted "Smartsearch" in your comment and used the right click "search for this" to find the extension... how self-referential.
Anyway it came up with a bunch of unrelated results, the page you want is this: SmartSearch.
The latest version of DictionarySearch lets you define your own search engines too.
Btw the grandparent post was very handy, I've always mucked around with the bookmarked url etc for keyword searches, right clicking is so much easier! -

Re:Ah; that's so much better!Next time, try starting Firefox in "safe mode."
Poorly designed or incompatible Extensions can cause problems with your browser, including make it crash, slow down page display, etc. If you encounter strange problems relating to parts of the browser no longer working, the browser not starting, windows with strange or distorted appearance, degraded performance, etc, you may be suffering from Extension or Theme trouble. Restart the browser in Safe Mode. On Windows, start using the "Safe Mode" shortcut created in your Start menu or by running firefox.exe -safe-mode. On Linux, start with
./firefox -safe-mode and on Mac OS X, run:cd
When started in Safe Mode all extensions are disabled and the Default theme is used. Disable the Extension/Theme that is causing trouble and then start normally. /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/
./firef ox-bin -safe-mode

The only problem I have with it is the doube google search box.
get rid of it and do it the smart way.note to knee-jerkers: before you jump allover yourselves, no it does not defeat the purpose, because the google toolbar isnt just for searching, it has a lot of other goodness too.

The Blue what?
t would seem timely to release a volume titled Don't Click on the Blue E
I too avoid the "Blue E", but what's with the Firefox logo? Is that Papa Smurf's head? A salamander feeding off a giant blueberry? Flipped upside-down it sorta looks like a redhead getting choked.
And what's that silly fox gumming, Lithuania? -
Re:It's not just the non-technical users
Quite bizarre. Am I right in thinking that you were visiting this seedy side of the Interweb using Internet Explorer? I'm surprised that you don't have something by the MoFo on your computer to put a gap between the OS and your web browsing for safety's sake (I won't pretend that this will make you immune to catching the STIs of the Internet, but it will help).
I think you underestimate the importance of not using Internet Explorer. Microsoft got out of an Anti-Trust suit by tying the core of the computer to IE, but in doing so made IE insecure as Woody Allen having a paranoid attack while all his friends party in the room next door. -
Re:Not Entirely As Advertised
tried this?

not a permanent fix yet though -
Re:That's great....
The googlebar firefox extension does exactly what you describe.
I am interested to know what additional features this new firefox toolbar offers that googlebar can't already do. -
Re:Not Entirely As Advertised
Using this in my userContent.css has stopped all pop-ups, even the ones that Firefox can't take care of naturally.
-
Re:Not Entirely As AdvertisedI have this problem a lot as well. This looks like it's probably the appropriate bugzilla entry for this bug.
Sorry, links to Bugzilla from Slashdot are disabled.
Looks like you'll have to copy and paste the url. Interesting. -

"feature"?
Nobody ever claimed it as a "feature", in fact some big upgrades are being worked on for version 1.1. Adding a bittorrent client just for updates would be unnecessary bloat.

Re:Firefox on Intel-Based Unix for quite some time
Most of what was posted/discussed publicly in Bugzilla and Bonsaiseemed to be some endian issues in old Mac-specific code (that evolved from the Classic-era codebase) and updating the build system to use the latest version of Xcode. Whether there were more issues not discussed publicly, I don't know.

Fed up with Amazon? It's easy to shop elsewhere.
Get a copy of the Book Burro Greasemonkey script for Firefox.
What does it do? All those Amazon links people put on their web pages still work, and you can still use Amazon product search. But it will give you a price comparison right in the browser (a little floating window on top of the Amazon page), together with links to order from other on-line book sellers.
There are other Greasemonkey user scripts that look up the book in your local library and do all sorts of other nice price comparison things for you. -
Re:50% chance?
seems to work well, after a matter of trial and error on which sites I can still semi-trust to visit...Well, after Mozilla patched their stuff properly..
Come on, Mozilla. A lot of the internet is counting on you to not pull a M$ as far as your security goes... -
Page 2 and scripting languagesThe entire second page of the article talks about scripting languages, specifically Javascript (in browsers) and Groovy.
1. Kudos to the Groovy authors. They've even garnered James Gosling's attention. If you write Java code and consider yourself even a little bit of a forward thinker, look up Groovy. It's a very important JSR (JSR-241 specifically).
2. He talks about Javascript solely from the point of view of the browser. Yes, I agree that Javascript is predominently implemented in a browser, but it's reach can be felt everywhere. Javascript == ActionScript (Flash scripting language). Javascript == CFScript (ColdFusion scripting language). Javascript object notation == Python object notation.
But what about Javascript and Rhino's inclusion in Java 6? I've been using Rhino as a server side language for a while now because Struts is way too verbose for my taste. I just want a thin glue layer between the web interface and my java components. I'm sick and tired of endless xml configuration (that means you, too, EJB!). A Rhino script on the server (with embedded Request, Response, Application, and Session objects) is the perfect glue that does not need xml configuration. (See also Groovy's Groovlets for a thin glue layer).
3. Javascript has been called Lisp in C's clothing. Javascript (via Rhino) will be included in Java 6. I also read that Java 6 will allow access to the parse trees created by the javac compiler (same link as Java 6 above).
Java is now Lisp? Paul Graham writes about 9 features that made Lisp unique when it debuted in the 50s. Access to the parse trees is one of the most advanced features of Lisp. He argues that when a language has all 9 features (and Java today is at about #5), you've not created a new language but a dialect of Lisp.
I am a Very Big Fan of dynamic languages that can flex like a pretzel to fit my problem domain. Is Java evolving to be that pretzel?
-
But does it work in IE?
However, there are times when someone uses "i.e." and it's unclear if they are using it correctly or incorrectly.
The correct way to use i.e. is to download f.f.
Then when I'm writing something, I wonder -- can I use "i.e." and know that people will understand that I'm not referring to an example?
Likewise, can I use "i.e." and know that people will understand that I'm not referring to web browsing software?
-
Re:Not Java but JVM... so how many people are writing code that gets output as Java bytecode but is not written in Java?
Anyone who writes in Groovy, Python, ObjectScript, JavaScript, NetRexx, and many others. There's a scripting JSR as well. I don't think the original poster had this specifically in mind though.

Re:What users would really need for desktop linux.
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/tips#oth_m
e mcache [mozilla.org]
This MAY help
Specify the memory cache usage
Normally, Firefox determines the memory cache usage dynamically based on the amount of available memory. To specify a specific amount of memory cache, add the following code to your user.js file: // Specify the amount of memory cache: // -1 = determine dynamically (default), 0 = none, n = memory capacity in kilobytes
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.capacit y", 4096);
To disable the memory cache completely, add the following code: // Disable memory cache:
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.enable", false);

Check outThe Customize Google plugin. I don't use it to block out adverts and would encourage you not to either, but it is handy for blocking out those obnoxious spammy sites that far too often show up in my google searches.
It was a bit unintuitive how you add sites to the filter list though -- just cut and paste "http://*.whatever.com/*" into your extensions list and any search results from whatever.com will then be greyed out.
