Re:I switched, and could not be happier...
go to about:config and create a new pref called config.trim_on_minimize and set it to false.
Or add this to your user.js:
// Slow startup after long periods of inactivity (minimized window or other) // http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76831# c277
user_pref("config.trim_on_minimize", false);
This was broken on the aviary branch builds for a while. It is fixed now, but I don't think it was working in the last release of Firefox. I use nightly branch builds. Cool stuff happening with plugins in the branch builds. -

Re:bank on IE
The list of websites which don't work with Mozilla (that's a link to bugzilla, showing Priority 1,2,3 tech-evangalism bugs), and should be a pretty complete list of all major websites that don't work with mozilla. There're 236 such sites at the moment.
Actual URL, if you follow links without displaying a referer tag. -
It's nowhere near as complex as you seem to think.
But until the risk increases (or manifests itself to me personally) or Mozilla/FireBird get easier to use from install to every-day usage, I ain't switching.
1) Run Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy -- you're probably already infected and don't know it.
2) Go to this site and download the latest version for your OS.
3) Find wherever you saved the file to, double click it & follow the prompts. Bam, installed.
4) Upgrade? Download new version, rename the mozilla folder to mozilla_old, install the new one, move any plug-ins from the old plug-in folder to the new one (when it says something about overwriting the one file that's in both, say 'no'), and delete the mozilla_old folder as soon as you know it all works.
It's nowhere near as hard as you might think. If you can manage WINS, you can move/delete a few files.
It's also better than having all the information on your computer exported to Nigeria, or having your PC used like a proxy while someone hacks into someplace important enough to get the Feds to knock on your door, or having your PC used to store child pornography. Don't laugh, both of these have actually happened to people; check the news...
Now then, if you need it personally demonstrated to you, I'm sure that I could find a few malware websites which are typosquatters, etc. -
Re:Browse Happy?
If you really want the extensions, they should work in Firefox for OS X. I don't know for sure though. I use Safari, which I find is basically firefox, except in cocoa-y goodness.

Re:IE is too often required
I only use IE when I am *required* to do so, but there's the rub: there are too many things that do not work unless you use IE. The user agent switcher is nice, but it doesn't always work.
For irony's sake, I'll list the biggest offender (in so many ways) in my life: *IBM*'s Lotus Notes.
Mine is the Deltek Time Collection App. I work for a SysAdmin company, that mostly specializes in Unix :( . . .
However it's been on Mozilla's bugzilla for years and still remains unconfirmed. Thank god for WINE, because I would hate to have a Windows machine in my office. -

Re:No protection
In a word - copyleft (BSD has none, Mozilla is 'in between' - http://www.mozilla.org/MPL/mpl-faq.html)
Remember Microsoft's viral arguments? Even if this isn't their real issue it's become part of the politics...

Re:first things first--Mozilla and OOo are more stable for me on Windows than on Linux.
I don't know about Mozilla, but Mozilla Firefox works great for me.
On the other hand, I'm using Debian packages, which are often heavily modified for stability or integration with the rest of the OS.
Yes, this is a shameless Debian advocacy post.

Re:Licensing?Does your campus have a 'net-based BB or some such...<snip>
Not exactly. I do run a public web-based BB for my students and the CS department at large (UPE chapter, ACM chapter, tech help, etc.). However, since I'm tenure-track (not tenured), I can't rock the boat too much trying to change the culture and infra-structure at my school.
We did just roll out Thunderbird as the default mail client for staff, faculty, and students. However they still support IE like it's the only thing out there (some apps won't work with Mozilla, etc.). I guess it's a start.

Re:The correct pricing structure for most software
If all software was free, why would anyone bother developing it?
Gee, I can't think of anyone who would develop software without getting paid for it...
But seriously, there are several reasons people would write software whose price is 0:
- People want better software to do $WHATEVER (for values of $WHATEVER that make money, which is most of them), so they write it
- People want to get a job as a programmer so they write a software package to prove they aren't total code monkeys
- People like fame; they like being admired and appreciated
- An industry consortium decides they need an open, standard, free way to do $WHATEVER
- Some people have a political motivation to undermine proprietary software (we may not have that same motivation; but it is a real driving force for some people)
- Some people like to help others (ditto)
- Your company might want to make your product universally (or nearly so) used in order to be able to charge money for training, certification, etc.
- I mentioned 15 high-profile products that are competitive with best-of-breed and are available for $0 (and not all of it is Free as in speech). All of them were written because one of the above bullet points (or one I forgot) applied.
There are lots of motivations for people's actions besides money.

Re:WAR!Amen. I only use my HotMail account for things that I know I don't care about or will probably end up in the hands of the spammers, and because it's required to get into the IM system to chat with my less-savvy friends.
Otherwise, I run my own mail server with blacklists and SPAM filtering, further filtering with my mail client, leaving me very few junk mail messages to actually deal with. As far as I know, no false positives have been lost. The server ignores suspected servers, andthe spam filter throws away any high-scoring mail, leaving low-scoring spam for the mail client to handle, which gives me a chance to find mail I would want to keep (very, very, rare), tossing the rest in the trash can so I can peruse them.
I have a web mail client, too, so I can check in from anywhere I can't fire up my client or shell in.
Also, I don't worry about space. I'm casual (OK, lazy) about deleting mail, and after several years of not deleting what should probably be deleted I've only accumulated a couple hundred MB of crap. (Yes, it's sorted automatically into folders by sender or content.) That includes old "let's have lunch" announcements as well as mail with large attachements. The server's got another 50GB of space on it (slowly being eaten by web server and mail logs), so I'm not too worried about running out any time soon.
1 GB would suffice and give me another few years to fill up. Then I'd probably have to get rid of those lunch invites from 1998...

CSS columns support
CSS columns will be great for documents printed from html source, but I dread seeing webpages formatted for the screen using columns (all of which are about 100 pixels taller than the browser window, of course).
If you want to know more, you might read

Re:Finally! It has been clear that every SCO headline that has bumped the stock price has been used by execs to dump stock, if anyone still has SCO stock I say sell it now while it's still at 4$ a share before the next IBM case.
Besides what is your soul worth? Personally I didn't invest in defense contractors right after 9-11 although I know some people who did (and did very well at it.) Instead I gave away money to different charities, I will never regret that.
So sell SCO, give away money to a non-profit and get a tax write off! Even if you don't want to send food abroad, or get vacinations to kids, at least you can support Mozilla! http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/donate.html

Re:gecko
Sharing the GRE has been discussed for quite a while, and according to the Mozilla roadmap, it's still something they want to do. How soon it gets done is another matter, but it's at least on the list of stuff to do.

Setting Sunbird Date Format
According to the FAQ, Sunbird gets the date format from your OS. To use the ISO format, go to the Windows Start Menu, then Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options (not Date/time) > Date tab.

Re:Some of the new Mozilla 1.8a3 features
The best thing in the release is not a feature, but a bug fix. The "back button takes you to the top of the previous page instead of where you were" bug [217120] appears to have been fixed.
I normally don't install beta Mozillas, much less alphas, but that bug was driving me freakin' nuts! -
Re:NAME CHANGE
Ohh, sorry but you were not the first to think of that.
FYI, I'm using Mozilla Powermoose right now, sucker. -
Still lacks most important feature: useful alarms! The whole point of a calendar program, at least for me, is the alarms. Sunbird has them, but they don't go off unless the calendar is open. This means you can (for example) have Thunderbird open with the calendar plugin, but if you don't have the calendar window open, you won't be reminded about anything. Sunbird won't be useful to me until this is fixed.

and the tracker bug here. At the tracker bug, you can add your email to the CC, and put in a comment to let the developer's know that it is important to you!

Sync support is planned eventually, but some of us are starting to look at it now.

Re:Some of the new Mozilla 1.8a3 features
Read the damn bug yourself. (Note: copy and paste the link, Bugzilla rejects visits from Slashdot.) It is not designed to encourage bad writing: support for document.all will ONLY activate if the web developer really was stupid and did not use any sort of test to detect it.
Additional discussion can be seen from the Mozillazine article published weeks ago.

Re:no Palm support
According to the road map, Sync is listed under tems to resolve before a 2.0 release. If it were me, I'd be putting that higher on the priority list. Most people sync with a Palm or other type of device.

well... not a solution to closing the tab, but you could get UndoCloseTab extension to uh, Undo the close.

Re:NAME CHANGE
Serious answer: Pontiac probably won't be able to do anything about it. The changes to Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox were because other software had that name. Any trademark in cars Pontiac has over Sunbird won't extend to software.
Glib answer: When someone releases Sunsomething as a plugin -
no Palm support
The calendar does not yet synch with your Palm Pilot.
No synching with outlook clients (e.g. Pocket PCs), either, just Outlook
-- Sunbird FAQ .ics format export-import. -
Some of the new Mozilla 1.8a3 featuresFrom the Readme:
- At-rule for matching on site/document URL. Among other things, this makes site-specific user style rules possible (Great for changing it.slashdot.org's color scheme!)
- Undetected document.all support has been added to Mozilla (Good for some dumb IE-only sites)
- Support for translucent windows on Windows and GTK2 (Oohh!)
- Preliminary support for CSS columns has been checked in (Too bad IE won't support this for years, if ever)
- The new npruntime plugin scriptability API (Good, good)
- Users can now disable CSS via Use Style > None or a global preference (Well, they can't all be exciting)
-

Re:Makes Open Source More AttractiveExactly right! Which is why I've been drilling into my 100+ users as many Win32 open-source alternatives that I can find. Everything from using 7-Zip to replace WinZip to using Firefox to replace IE.
Of course I'd fall over dead from shock if they all listened. But I do have more than a few converts, which is a small victory I'll take!

Re:However
According to the mozilla.org release notes for 1.6, support for vCard was added in 1.6. It just didn't show up with the previous version of Netscape because Mozilla releases more often.
So you probably didn't need to wait at all... -

Umm... based on Moz 1.7 or 1.7.2?

Erm what no . . .
And it doesn't help that the Mozilla project has changed the name of it's products several times now.
No, they've changed the Project Name (ie: what it's called when they're making it), once realeased it'll simply be Mozilla Browser etc.

Re:Right mouse button?According to Mozilla 1.7 Release Notes:
# A new option to prevent sites from using JavaScript to block the browser's context menu.
So there should be support of this disabling-blocking (or whatever you want to call it), otherwise I guess you can stick with Mozilla. I myself haven't tried the new Netscape, nor do I think I will in the near future.
