Re:Mozilla has a soul?
Good list, but you left out one very important thing: Gecko rendering engine -- supports standards much better, and supports them well.
Its easy to foget about how important it is. Forget about web developers... just image how much cooler the web would be today if a Gecko based browser was no. 1. Want some examples? Look here. We'd be seeing fewer of the Flash dependant websites for one thing.
Also worth mentioning, my Firefox is much faster than IE. See the comments on the earlier story abuot the firefox 0.9 release. -
Re:People care?
I must add that these people are so used to IE being wrapped around Windows that installing a new browser seems like a major effort. I feel comfortable using Windows, installing apps, etc, and yet I, too, was in this category for a while. But now I use Firefox and tell everyone I can; I even bought a shirt (very nice).
Again, I think Mozilla needs to stress the fact that users can try it without FUD and, should they wish, go back. For this reason it is imperative that the next release have "upgrading" built-in for Windows users, which Mozilla says is coming "Upgrading will be fixed in a future release" (source), to ease the switch. It must be as easy as possible.

Read to roadmap to Phoenix
Firefox Roadmap 0.9 is One Tree Hill, 1.0b (b=beta) is going to be called Greenlane, and FINALLY, 1.0 FINAL will be code-named Phoenix. It has nothing to do with the branding of firefox. And if your complaining about firefox, then shut up and start fixing it. Make a bug report- if there's not one already- and assign yourself to it and FIX IT. If you don't know how to code firefox then STOP COMPLAINING! Make a bugzilla report and paitently wait. This is all still a work in progress.

Re:No source though
According to the release notes, the extension API has changed for 0.9.
See the Mozilla Firefox 0.9 Release Notes.

Re:I miss from Mozilla...The history for the URL bar seems like a strange place to put your Google Search link. It's not exactly intuitive, is it?
Custom Keywords seem to be just as convenient and considerably more flexible. (YMMV)

Re:Firefox
So what's the name-change going to be for this release?
A new twist: the new and improved browser, reloaded, chooses its own name, randomly.

Re: poorly rendered slashdot pages
That bug wasn't fixed for firefox 0.9, as far as I know.

Re:Sho' wish extensions worked.
Lots of Firefox 0.9-compatible extensions found here, including Tabbrowser Extensions and Googlebar.
-
Re:Good so far, but...
The old extensions need to be updated to fit the new extensions theme manager. See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24604
3 for details on the "bug". Essentially, the extension builders need to update the extension or it won't appear in the theme manager, even though it may install. There's also a new extension that you can install to make the old extensions visible, but the old extensions are still not removable after installation, unlike the new extensions.
One other issue I see with the extension manager: after installing enough extensions to make a scrollbar appear, it was difficult to scroll and the manager became really sluggish. However, I imagine that this is a minor problem that will be worked out over time.

I wish they would post this link
Here's the link to the FTP site where you can also pick up a ZIP file containing the Windows version. I find that nicer than the installer, sometimes.

Re:Safari
Currently staying with Netscape 7 (minus the editor and mail client) until Firefox reaches 1.0 at least... one thing I find rather annoying is the lack of a "new tab" button like NS7 has, on the left of the tabstrip. I use that a lot! In Firefox I have to right click on the tabstrip and select the menu item. Bah! Other than that and a slight differnece in initial loading times, NS7 seems to be just as good in every other aspect... at least for now.
You have two options:
1. You can right-click the toolbar, customize it and drag the new tab button onto the toolbar wherever you'd like.
2. You can install the Basics 1.0 extension which will give you the new tab button to the left of your tablist. It won't appear when there is only one tab, though. -
Re:Got it
Yeah, that gets me too. The slashdot bug is bug 217527 and as seen in comment 81 was backed out of the aviary (Firefox 0.9 and 1.0, and Thunderbird 0.7 and above) branch because it caused a regression (bug 246382). If you get a trunk build, the bug will be fixed.
* You'll have to copy/paste those links into your Address Bar, because bugzilla blocks links from slashdot. -

New themes and extensions
Get the old default theme back (it's called Qute.)
Watch out too, if you get hit by extensions that cause your browser to start with "Firefox is finishing installing extensions. This could take a minute..." (esp. on Windows) - this page (Google cached) offers some suggestions and links to relevant bug reports. -
Bug linkage
Like if I did a "back" to return to the
/. homepage, I'll get a message like "the page / cannot be found" or some shit.
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=123662
It's been marked fixed, yet it still isn't.
The new theme is butt ugly.
No argument there. -
Re:Safari
Kindly see Bug 151249 -- Middle click on links does nothing in OS X (You'll have to copy that link, bugzilla has a referrer check to block links from slashdot.)
Firefox & Seamonkey still use OS 9 event codes, which is why it doesn't work. There is a patch on that bug, but it didn't make it into 0.9, from what I can tell. See also Bug 106692 -- Rewrite mouse events to use CarbonEvents. -

Re:Royal Oak
There is a connection. Ben Goodger, the lead developer on the project is from Auckland (http://www.bengoodger.com/about/ben.shtml).
If you look at the Firefox roadmap, the 0.71, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0b milestones all have codenames that are Auckland suburbs.
-
Re:Adblock
Was your problem just a manifestation of this
To prevent the kind of problems we had with the 0.8 release (users were having the browser not start with "No XBL Binding for Browser" errors, and finding that their theme was broken), when you run 0.9 for the first time all of your extensions will be automatically disabled, and the theme will be reset to the default. You must then look for newer versions of your extensions that are compatible with Firefox 0.9 since the extension API has changed. After Firefox 0.9 these updates should be more seamless. ---from the release notes
...or was it something more annoying?
Adblock appears to be happily available through their new extension manager from the usual place...
-
Royal Oak
I see the release name for FireFox 0.8 is Royal Oak, also an Auckland suburb.
Is this just a coincidence or is there some connection between the Firebird project and Auckland , New Zealand? -
Re:Great browser, but...Yes, I already tried that, not being stupid. It doesn't do what I want though. I already told you how I set up my toolbars in IE. Try to duplicate that in Firefox 0.8. Oops, you can't.
You originally said: "Above [the google toolbar] I have a small toolbar containing Back/Forward/Stop/Refresh/Home/History. Right of that is the menu File/Edit/View/Favourites/Tools/Help. Then I have space for a huge URL bar."
Navigation buttons, then menu bar, then URL bar on one line. I'm looking at it right this second. In Firefox 0.8.
Sorry dude, you're just plain wrong on this one. You can drag any Firefox UI element anywhere you want it.
No. No, it doesn't. The Google bar does much more than just a search box.
Well, I was talking about ditching the built in Google bar, not the proprietary third party version you seem to like. Google says it does this:
- Search the web (check)
- Eliminate pop-up ads (check, built in to Firefox)
- Fill in forms (check, built in to Firefox)
- Highlight search terms on a page (FastFind takes you right there by typing, but yes, you can't see them all highlighted at once)
But, if it's absolutely vital you have the full thing, then download the Googlebar extension
- Search the web (check)

Re:Great browser, but...
I'm not sure if I have the newest Firefox on my mac, but the one I have doesn't even create a window.
I'd be surprised if someone hasn't pointed this out already, but from the Known Issues section of the Firefox 0.9 Release Notes:
If Firefox will not display a browser window on MacOS X, quit Firefox using Cmd+Q and open ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/default.abc/ and remove localstore.rdf. Restart Firefox. Any toolbar customizations you have made or window placement will be lost.
Bit of a pain perhaps, but they know it's there so it might not be by the time the next release rolls out.

Premature review
Firefox wasn't even released until 7:22 GMT today. That's only a little over an hour ago! The Linux builds haven't even been updated. All that's available currently is two Windows files and a Mac file. This is perhaps the most ill-timed Slashdot article ever.

Milestone names?
Is it just me or are the milestones named after suburb names in Auckland, New Zealand? I see Three Kings, Royal Oak, One Tree Hill...?! Milestone Names

Just wait a little bit...In case it wasn't obvious to everybody else, the latest ffx release is 0.9 RC. Meaning release candidate. Meaning not yet final bits.
The RC *is* major feature complete, but (as evident with the new theme and extension work) is still needing a fair bit of work before release. 0.9 final is expected in July, 1.0 final is expected in September (at which point I'm more than happy to shove it on everybody and anybody
:) ) See the Roadmap for details. In a build I downloaded today, I even noticed that the profile importer now finally gives you the option of which profile to import from (eg IE, Netscape 4, Mozilla 1.x, etc) before actually doing the dirty work. That wasn't present in 0.9rc IIRC.
In other words, I'd wait a little bit longer before pushing 0.9RC on your friends and family. This one's for the testing folks. Of course, anything pre-1.0 is really meant for testing, but this one more so
