PETA bites
And it comes with lots of petabytes in the cloud!
Are these the bytes used by an animal rights group to run its yes-kill shelters? Or are they bites taken out of tasty animals (warning: 1996 web design)?

Re:We'll make great pets
And not the wrong kind, either.
Hey don't knock it. If more people wanted some panda-burger, there'd be a lot more of them.

Re:PETA?
Yes, do PETA know whether or not these microchips affect the taste?

And if you ever wanted a reason to quit: http://www.peta.org/
and join these guys! http://mtd.com/tasty/ (They originally owned Peta.org) -
Re:Kneejerk Activism
when I was approached by petitioners from PETA who were upset about the treatment of the horses in the latest Conan movie.
Can't say that I understand why the People for the Eating of Tasty Animals would be upset about such a thing. -
Re:I'm confused...
So if PETA had beaten mcdonalds.com in registering that domain name, it would still take you to a protest site today.
Bad example, someone beat peta to the punch on registering peta.org, they sued him for it. Primarily because his "organization" was the People for the Eating of Tasty Animals. Eventually Peta won and they now control the domain name, but here is an archive of the original peta.org page.

PETA?You'd be talking about these guys?
WayBack appears to be down, else I'd find a mirror of them at their original location for you. Some of the parody sites around are quite good.

Re:BigBlockMopar in University...Similar eventAnd there was much laughter and rejoicing.
Nice story. I thought the punchline was going to be the usual observations about leather shoes, belt, purse, jacket etc.
I always liked the original peta.org website (the one that was hijacked eventually by the actual PETA organization - another nasty display of political correctness and disregard for the 1st Amendment). People Eating Tasty Animals - I can get behind that concept!

Re:GNU is not software, it's religion
GNU's list of words you can and cannot say
You mean the list of "Some Confusing or Loaded Words and Phrases that are Worth Avoiding." They aren't saying that you can't say them - just theat they are loaded and understood in certain ways that one must be aware of when talking to this community. It's quite common when people are using normal words with certain meanings to warn people about the understanding of those words in that community.
And, I think that PETA cares a lot about what you think. Of course, I prefer PETA but what do I know... -
Re:Why retire ?
When asked to comment about the chips, a PETA spokesperson said, "I bet you can't eat just one!"
-
Re:RMS. PeTA. It's all good.
Yes, PETA is an amusing site. Too bad it's not being actively maintained anymore.

Re:First of all...
>So amazing that they actually turn my stomach, because they taste so real! (I am a vegetarian.)
I'm a meat eater who's occasionally tried those fake meat products and let me tell you -- its like eating that circular pink rubbery stuff they fed to Capt. Picard when he was captured by those weird alien dudes.
When a vegetarian says "that tastes like meat!" about a tofu product, I understand what an audiophile feels like when he hears someone say "I bought BOSE because they sound the best!".
BTW: If you think the smell of meat turns your stomach, I once puked over artichokes, and almost again over cinnamon sauce. Ugggh.

Domain squatting considered harmful
The author Ann Rule does not have the domain annrule.com because someone registered it way back in 1996. The person who got it tried to shake her down for some bucks; she instead registered annrules.com. annrule.com goes to some sort of celebrity portal.
There was also the odd case of peta.org. Some guy registered peta.org, and set up a web site: People Eating Tasty Animals. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the somewhat more famous group with the initials PETA, objected to this. They contested the domain name and Network Solutions yanked the domain and handed it over to PETA.
Then there was my own sad story. I looked into who owns the domain name qv.org, and found that a web hosting company is sitting on it; they offered me a chance to take it over for a mere $1000. "It's one of the rare remaining 2-letter domain names," I was told. I suspect it will be a long time before anyone pays them $1000 for a .org name, 2-letter or no.

Re:Yummy
err... actually this changed about 3 years ago. peta.org is now PETA's site. http://www.mtd.com/tasty/ is the one you mentioned.
-
PETA will be next
The FBI will be going after People Eating Tasty Animals next, even though that site was raped by Network Solutions years ago, and hasn't had an update since 1996.

Damn!I just realized that Peta got their domain name back, Peta.org. Crap! If there's ever an organization that deserves to have their domain name usurped, they're it.
It used to be a guy who registered it as "People Eating Tasty Animals." The site is at mtd.com.
But looking around at mtd.com it looks like the WIPO yanked it.
Now THIS makes me VERY angry. People Eating Tasty Animals is COMPLETELY legit. If the veggie eating people failed to register the domain in time, well that's their problem.
I shouldn't hang around Salshdot (er... Slashdot) anymore. The more time I spend here, the more I loath the direction this country is taking and decisions our judges make.

PETA would be upset
From this recent kuro5hin discussion, PETA themselves would get upset about this.
Err, I guess the PETA we're talking about is here.

Re:Any bets?I'm not sure how old this is (the internic regsitry is up-to-date now) but here is the People Eating Tasty Animals website.
PETA
It seems that at one time they had the "peta.org" domain name, but it was confiscated by our wonderful US government after some legal disputes with those <flame>animal rights wakkos</flame>

Re:Screw the sheep :)
You know, I was in NY once, listening to some radio station, and on the news they said one guy was arrested for animal abuse. Apparently he killed three sheep by what is suggested in your title.
It's people like you that are perpratrators of animal abuse. PETA -- everyone mocks them, but I am now in more support of them than ever.
Peer pressure is not a joke, people. This isn't jumping off a bridge, this is violating innocent sheep. -
Re:web sites for big business
display in extenso the company's organigram but hide information on products
Since we're on the topic of Fast Food, I thought I'd put in a link to www.tacobell.com. They have menus, and even Nutritional Information about their food. I think they should be commended on that.
Another thing, is McDonalds' website has a locater. Handy for when you're doing those special installs for clients out in the middle of nowhere, and you need to know where the nearest Mickey Rara's is.
By the way, the People Eating Tasty Animals site is up (I dunno if anyone linked to this on a previous story), at http://mtd.com/tasty/.

Re:Hah!>I really wish I had seen PETA.org before it was taken down
>so I could send my vegetarian friends to it.People Eating Tasty Animals can still be found, at http://www.mtd.com/tasty/.
Hasn't changed much since '96 (!) but neither has the taste of a nice thick juicy steak, mmm.

A New Censorship?
When checking out the PETA Parody Site I tried following numerous links, particularly in the Miscellaneous section. Most don't work at all, including some interesting titles such as The Implications of Nazi Animal Protection, Militant Vegetariansim, and Animal Rights and the New Man Haters.
No, none of these were hosted on peta.org, they were hosted elsewhere. Obviously, the long arm of PETA and its supporters appears to have reached well beyond peta.org in silencing their critics. -
Domain Name Rights Coalition
Just for background, Mike Doughney is the co-founder of the ISP DIGEX (purchased by Intermedia Communications, which then spun off a web hosting company called "Digex"). People Easting Tasty Animals took in no money, it was just a parody site. Mike has been dedicated to providing information about cult-like groups for a long time, including transcendental meditation, PETA, and Christian right groups. He makes no money off of this.
After Peta.Org was put on hold in 1996, Mike had his own domain (MTD.com) threatened by the MTD Company (that made lawnmowers). This lead him to form to Domain Name Rights Coalition to fight for the rights of domain name owners.
Rumors are that there will be an appeal of this ruling.

Re:Current location
The site doesn;t seen to have been updated since 1996, but it is still a good laugh at the hypocracy or organizations like PETA and their supporters. The mail section is especially good, very similar anti-abortion (pro-life) supporters shooting doctors.
I am not a vegitarian, but I understand and can respect those that are. PETA and it's senstationalism only hurt my respect for people who do not eat meat, regardless or the reason.

Re:PETA's press releasePeta's press release says: PETA won the precedent-setting case on three grounds. First, trademark infringement-the PETA trademark belongs to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and Doughney had no right to use it. Second, Doughney diluted the value of the trademark by his use of it. Third, Doughney was found in violation of the "Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act," because he appropriated the distinctive and famous "PETA" mark for his own commercial benefit.
- The first amendment always allows parody, even if someone has a trademark.
- Diluted the value of the trademark?!? He just gave a ton of press to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He should be charging them for advertising.
- Commercial benefit?!? How was this commercial at all? He put up a parody site.
Besides that, I really think this sets a dangerous precedent. Trademarks are limited to specific things whereas domain names inevitably cross all boundaries. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office PETA's trademark is for "educational services; namely, providing programs and seminars on the subject of animal rights and welfare" and "educational services; namely, providing programs and seminars on the subject of animal rights and welfare." (See also here and here or here for all trademarks with PETA in them.) This trademark classification has nothing to do with computers, so what right do they have to the domain name. If this is allowed to stand it will make taking away someone's domain name much easier. -
Here is the PETA.org page...
For those that want to see the site in question (since PETA.org is no longer up), the owner of the page moved the site in 1996 to this URL: http://www.mtd.com/tasty.

Re:What happened to peta.org?
The "People Eating Tasty Animals" peta.org web page got moved to http://www.mtd.com/tasty/ when the PETA folks got upset. It's still there, with some stuff about domain name disputes, but it hasn't been updated since 1996 as near as I can tell from a quick look.

PETA has gone too far.
