Re:Would the real Leslie Sobon please stand up
This is a photo of Leslie Sobon Alright, that's pretty good, but then these are also photos of Leslie: one two three four That's quite a range there, never know what you're going to get.
Are you new to dealing with human beings (I was going to say "women" but then realized even that was too narrow)?
Every single one of those pix looks like the same attractive woman. But people look a bit different from time to time, like when they are working vs when they are posing for an "image" shot. It is exactly the same with guys as with gals, except that you don't have the same "appearance police" mentality scrutinizing the guys for imperfections like you do with gals.
This reminds me of the candid paparazzi snaps of, say, Jennifer Aniston picking up some hygiene products on a midnight run to 7-11 at midnight in her sweats. Someone who is possibly the world's most beautiful woman (sorry Ashwariya) looks kind of dowdy under those conditions but she is still the same person and could look absolutely dazzling later in the morning. If she doesn't pass your "always must look beautiful test", its your problem not hers.
Guys who expect woman to be glamorous 24/7/365 are either very rich or idiots. Both sets are jerks.

Re:More to it
Remember what most MP3 players looked like before the iPod? I'm not just talking about the general ugliness of some of them, but the way the interface was designed specifically to appeal to people who LOVE high-tech gagetry, and think the Windows file manager is downright spiffy.
My first music player was a Creative Nomad II MG. Even after owning it for a year, I couldn't skip songs or navigate the content without grabbing it and looking at it. The dreadful UI had buttons lined up vertically on both sides of the device -- worse than the navigation issues, it was stupidly easy to accidentally delete songs. Within two years it was just a dust collector. The device itself was $250 and an extra memory card about $100. By the same token, the first time I picked up an iPod in a store, it was obious with less than 60 seconds of button pressing how the thing worked. With a little familiarity, it's a snap to operate without looking (nice feature when driving).
About a year ago, I saw some refurb 3g 15gb ipods on sale someplace for $190, I bought one. It wasn't because of commercials (I don't watch TV). It wasn't because of iTunes (although admitedly, I have fallen prey to the ITMS crack -- but I recovered after an emusic intervention). I just wanted to put my CDs on a useable device and the iPod fit the bill. -

Also, its out-of-the-box UI follows the conventions of every other program in the world, rather than making up its own thing.

Ugh. Looks like a cross between AOL-(mis)design tactics, and Windows Media Player 7 for Windows ME.

Cell will be a 4.6Ghz eight-core chip initiallyHere is a powerpoint and article describing more information on the Cell chip that will be shown at the ISSCC (International Solid-State Circuits Conference) conference next Feburary at San Francisco.
Technological Features for "first-generation" Cell chips:
4.6Ghz Clock Speed
1.3V operation
85 degree C operation with heatsink
6.4Gb/s off chip communication
from the article:
eight cores on a single chip
90nm SOI process

Re:Bit too expensive for what you get...First, this is not an intermediate version. According to Sony's Web site (translated from Japanese):
The PSX is not a successor to the PlayStation2, it is a HDD/DVD recorder designed with the capabilities of the PlayStation2 in mind.
SONY Japan planned the PlayStation2 as a platform for digital media convergence; this is an outgrowth of that. The PlayStation2 was never supposed to be just a video game console, it was a technology for media processing.Second, this is an eminently sellable product for its target market: people who want not just a functional but an elegant PVR. The marketing campaign in Japan features yoko, tate, pi! - loosely translated as "across, down, beep!" - scroll across to the "videos" icon, down through your videos until you find the one you want, then beep! -- it plays.
The interface is elegant, as is the design, and the box does what it should do with no fuss. Many consumers would pay for that, particularly in Japan where people are willing to pay more for good products.

Re:Also @ Cosmo GamesOK, so that one by Masamune Shiro (Ghost in the Shell) looks pretty cool, especially the white version... but the other one is nothing special.
I bet both are about as useful as my Darth Vader helmet mouse. I think it inflicted some kind of permanent injury on me when I used for a few days after leaving my IntelliMouse Explorer at a LAN party.

Quartz ExtremeIf anyone is wondering exactly what Quartz Extreme could do, here's a screenshot.
There's a DVD playing. The teacups are floating around from a different application. They are chrome.
They are reflecting in real time what the movie is playing.
(probably why it won't work on my Rage 128)

Re:5 GB MicroDrive
Actually, the 5GB Microdrive is already available for purchase. Apple has been selling them for a while now, with a free carrying case that has a FireWire interface and plays MP3s.

FreeBSD Press
This month's FreeBSD Press has the usually 4-6 CD-ROM set of packages on DVD ROM. It looks like more and more magazines in Japan are moving toward DVD.
