askslashdot some month ago...
There was nearly the same discussion some month ago at askslashdot, but in fact in was more desktop/en-user focused.
I think there a lots of open-source applications for Win 32 systems (more than it might be good): Ogg Vorbis has utilities for Windows; CDex is a great open-source CD-Ripper/Encoder; and with VirtualDub Windows users have the powerfulst video-editing/capture software.
The list could go on nearly endless just think about all those open-source javaapps (Limewire, JCDSee...) which run under every platform...

Switching from Windows to Linux at workI have successfully switched from Windows 2000 to Mandrake Linux 8.1 at work. All I need from the Windows environment can be done with open source utils. This includes OpenOffice, gnome-spreadsheet, kmail (really good for multiple IMAP accounts, better than evolution) samba and nautilus and a bunch more I can't remember.
And if I REALLY need to get into windows there's no need to reboot. Double click the VMWare icon and load the suspended image file of Windows. No more than four seconds and I can do whatever I need to do in Windows. The only thing that's still problematic is integrating samba browsing in Nautilus in a good way. KDE is of course a good alternative, but personally I don't like that environment.
I got some screenshots up at my site.

I use CDex on windows, which uses lame 1.2, and it only takes about 7-9 minutes to do a CD (windows 2000, 700 MHz Intel). It's freeware and you can get it at http://www.cdex.n3.net/

Re:To bad Carmack improved the wrong things.
(Why'd you post anonymously? This is good info! Someone mod the parent up!)
I spend nearly all of my gaming hours (30+ / week) playing QuakeWorld and Q3 CPM [
... ]Wow. And I thought I played a lot.
In all actuality the best way to see the best of the best work the movement in Quake for all its worth is to look into speed running. [
... ]I'm very familiar with the Quake Done Quick series (I particularly like Scourge Done Slick; how about that rocket jump rebound off the floating exploding thing?). But watching the demos by themselves doesn't show you what the player is doing with their hands to make it happen; all you see are the results.
Check out a speed run demo, here [[e1m7_028.dem]]
That link doesn't work, but I looked at its predecessor e1m7_029, and it's damned impressive. (Hopping off Chthon's head. Brilliant.)
Everyone calls this "level lockdown", "level control, or "denial of items". This is definately not easy to maintain as multiple respawns (w/100 health) certainly can chistle you down to nothing.
I'll have to disagree here. On DM6 in Quake{World}, a guy can camp the red armor and hang out for days. There's a +25 health pack right there, and another +25 and two +15 packs within walking distance. In deathmatch mode 1, each time the rocket launcher respawns means another +5 rockets for him, and it only takes one solid hit to down a guy. Deathmatch mode 3 (weaponstay) mitigates this slightly, as it forces him to go hunting for more rockets when he runs out (and there's only one place to get them other than from your corpse).
Yes, you can pick up the +100 health pack and second rocket launcher, but your aim needs to be perfect or he'll still clobber you.
BTW, thanks for the pointer to the FDE (Frags Done Extreme) video. That was amazing.
Just how, in practical terms, do I [improve my skills] without some advice? Doing it on one's own tends not to yield helpful results: [
... ]Simple. Start watching some pro matches, speed running tutorials, join a clan, practice like a mofo alone on DM maps so that you do the moves you need to when the pressure is on. Learning trickery in the middle of a [live] deathmatch is just dumb.
Sound advice, thank you. But doesn't the precise timing of the tricks change based on network latency (in which case, skills learned on a LAN or localhost connection prove useless on public Internet servers)? Further, aren't the details of the tricks different between Quake and QuakeWorld (since QuakeWorld has slightly different physics)?
Finally, if you're still out there, do you have an opinion on Qizmo and/or MoreQuakeWorld? Some seem to regard them as indispensible tools, while others see them as cheat enablers.

Or neither is true. But the same argument has been used against both. The difference is, when Microsoft and the Church of Scientology attacked Slashdot, they used the DMCA. Islam Way was attacked with the threat of new legislation.
The fact is, every weblog is going to have a seamy underside. Hopefully the public will not be so easily swayed by emotion as to outlaw weblogs because of the comments posted by a handful of fools.

Re:Microsoft & code theft
Actually, the topic of code theft has come up quite often on Microsoft Watch, and several instances of code theft in the memory management subsystem have been discovered. Although most of VMM is BSD-derived, the newer page scheduler came straight out of Linux 2.2 (though it was replaced again in 2.4 - expect the 2.4 scheduler to show up in XP). Also, a surprising amount of ext2 code showed up in NTFS 5.

Port 80 blockingFolks -
Everyone who keeps complaining about the port 80 blocking needs to put the situation in perspective. (Yes I am one of them.) http is one of those "nice" Internet services that will easily run on any port, without changes to the client software. Try to do that with Windows SMB networking - you can't (easily) because the port range is hard-coded into the OS and can't be changed without much hacking. At least we have the option of simply changing our URLs to end with ":81" to solve the problem. And if you happen to be serving a domain off your cable modem and the
:81 makes your URL look ugly... well, cable modems just weren't designed for serving domains anyway, so look for another provider. If @home *really* wanted to be jerks, they could block incoming connections to your PC (except as required by ftp/irc clients). We agreed not to run servers so that's well within their rights. But they're not doing that and it's trivial to work around the port 80 block, so let's just be happy for what we have (and enjoy the newfound lack of Code Red sponsored congestion).

eTextbooks
Here is part of a discussion we had earlier today on free-sklyarov. In addition to the bit below we discovered a company which markets ebook, eTextbooks. The company is called metatext a division of netLibrary. Notice on their list of titles: titles The Declaration of Independence!!! Notice also your right to use it expires in 180 days, even though they are offering it free of charge, for now??? Also notice the list of FULL PRICE ($80.00-$90.00) textbooks from major publishers... That also expire after 180-395 days. If you go to the below link you will see under profitability that the company is recommending their ebook system to publishers since it "reduces the sales of used books" (read eliminate) look here If students thought paying $90.00 for a textbook, that you could keep as a reference was bad. How about one that disappears after the semester ends. Without Dmitry's software, there would be no way to trade a book with a fellow student, lend one or even sell a used book back to the book store. Not to mention you would have to ASK a publisher to renew your copy of the Declaration of Independence... Here is my blurb.... That is like asking Honda if I can drive my motorcycle today. Why do I have to ask a company permission to read, or loan a book to a friend ONLY IF the publisher grants permission. This is the issue. Dmitry is not in prison, but part of his defense, at least in the public court of opinion is did he write something malicious like a virus, or a tool for the greater good. Tell any student that he wrote a tool that ensures they will always have the ability to use a textbook after one semester, whether it be an ebook or physical book and they will side with you. Many programmers keep books from school as reference material. I can see from my computer: A Calc book Java Servlet Programming Java Programmer Reference Oracle SQL Interactive American Government Solaris For Managers All used as Textbooks in previous semesters. Under eTextbooks, they and the 50 or so other books I have in storage, would be gone. What will I have to do pay a monthly, daily, hourly, or per use subscription in the future to use a book??? Who will own the books?? AOL? That is where we are headed folks! We should stop it now!!!! BJY byoungvt@yahoo.com sjrally site

Re:pardon my ignoranceA little collection of links for you:
LAME is the best MP3 encoder available. It's free, open source, and multiplatform.
On Windows, the best ripper/encoder is CDex. On Linux, look for packages for Lame, CDParanoia and Grip for your distribution.
For discussion of the best MP3 encoders, take at look at R3Mix (and in particular at the forums).

Re:Need hardware players and conversion toolsLack of portable hardware players. All the players on the market today support mp3 and wma, but none play ogg. This is a problem.
Yes, this is a problem if you use portable MP3 players (which I don't). However, the specs for the Vorbis 1.0 decoder weren't finalized until a few weeks ago (and the sample decoder still has some memory usage issues), so you can't really expect any companies to have implemented decoding yet.
AFAIK, ripping to ogg is a 2 step process, save the track as a wav, then encode to ogg.
Well, you're wrong. Anything that can do MP3 encoding on the fly should be able to do it with Vorbis as well. As an example, have a look at CDex, the best Windows ripper/encoder. Most Linux encoders I've seen (for MP3 as well as Vorbis) seem to use the 2 step process, but this should be seamless to the outside user, and not much slower -- you're probably noticing a slow copy because the ripping (with Grip at least) uses CDParanoia, which is quite slow but very accurate.
And with my massive mp3s sitting there, I'd like to have a program that could convert from mp3 to ogg.
Please don't do this. Transcoding almost always leads to very low quality files -- and will lead people who listen to them to assume that all the artifacts are due to OGG, and not to the transcoding process. MP3 encoding creates certain artifacts. Vorbis creates others. By encoding to MP3, and then Vorbis, you are getting 2 sets of artifacts, plus the Vorbis coder has to waste bits encoding the MP3-created artifacts. MP3 players aren't going to go away, so please don't transcode: re-rip instead.
I could not tell a difference between ogg and mp3 sound quality
Note that all the encoders kicking around are of (at best) the beta 4 release, which, amongst other issues, has no channel coupling. You can expect at least a 10% reduction in file-size in the final release compared with beta 4, and more if you let it try lossy channel coupling (akin to joint stereo in the MP3 world). Beta 4 at 128 kbps already sounds better than 128 kbps MP3s - the final release will sound the same at 112 kpbs.
One thing is certain, I'll never use the wma format.
Damn right.

Re:Bleeding edge compatibilityThe best Windows based ripper/encoder is CDex. It's small, light, fast, fully featured and free. Hard to think of a better combination of features (yes, it's also open source, but that's beside the point).
For Linux, use cdparanoia + lame or oggenc, or one of the many good frontends - Grip comes to mind. Additionally, the upcoming KDE 2.2's builtin audiocd IOSlave will allow you to rip CDs very easily (though not yet write them).
You 'gave up after 5 albums' - why? You can use the computer for other things while you're ripping a CD, you know
:). Combine ripping and encoding, and it'll probably take about 30 minutes to fully process a CD, but there's no reason why this shouldn't go on in the background. -
Re:Good,For info on the IceWM plugin, as well as some other KWin themes and a KControl module to configure them (configurable button placement! Nice!), go here.
I have also noticed that the GTK theme importer doesn't work perfectly. Some GTK themes will cause QT to choke, requiring you to go and delete some config files just to start KDE again! However, if fonts are your only problem, couldn't that be solved with a quick trip to the Fonts control panel? The GTK themes might use odd-sized fonts, and we all know how well X fonts scale (not well at all). If you select sane font sizes, or even different fonts, they should be quite readable. Or, enable font anti-aliasing as I have done and kiss your jagged fonts goodbye!

Re:Shooting themselves in the foot
Precisely.
It's not WinXP we're actually discussing here, but Windows Media Player 8 (which will, however, be a part of WinXP.) However, it is a replaceable component.
WMP8 won't allow you to rip at anything other than 56Kbps for MP3s. 56KBps is ideal for Net streaming, which will probably be the last bastion of the MP3 format. Ogg Vorbis, WMA and the other competitors will oust MP3 eventually - but WMA's a pig to stream, and you can do Shoutcast from an ordinary web server.
And besides, why does Microsoft do this sort of thing? Legal problems. If they were to integrate a MP3 encoder that does the full range of functions, they could be seen to be killing off their competitors, and people would be complaining about it on Slashdot. On the other hand if they *didn't* integrate an MP3 encoder, they could be seen to be forcing people to use WMA - and people would be complaining about it on Slashdot. They can't win.
Who uses WMP for ripping under Windows anyway? No-one. I use, for example, the wonderful (and open source) CDex. Also, MusicMatch Jukebox is a good point-and-click package for the intelligent newbie (it can do VBR, among other things.) Either are probably used a lot more than WMP, or Creative PlayCenter, or RealJukebox - all of which are bloated, awful software.
WinXP hasn't crippled either package as far as I can see - these "problems" probably come from a missing (unincluded) wnaspi32.dll. NT series operating systems have never included this file by default, as it is not generally needed - except for back compatibility. It does, however, come with Win9x.

MP3s are shit?
You must be doing them wrong. CDex (with the Blade encoder), using VBR with 80-320kb/s, and the results are good for anything but audiophile reference purposes IMHO.
And Ogg Vorbis should turn out to be better in the end.

Re:yes but...
The big test for Vorbis as a viable codec is its inclusion in mainstream encoders, Musicmatch Jukebox, Audiocatalyst, etc. These mainstream encoders account for most of the mp3s on Napster, billing themselves on speed and ease of use. LAME (the preferred Vorbis encoder), despite being arguably the best MP3 encoder out there, is hardly used by the Napster community because it is slower (and generally more accurate), and harder to use (LAME has the command line; MMJB has skins!).
I wouldn't say that. Asking around, it seems like most of the heavy Windows MP3 makers on Napster have moved over to Albert Farber's open-source CDex, which does a better, more reliable job of extraction than the other rippers and uses the LAME encoder in a graphical interface.

Vorbis support in CDex
CDex is a cdripper for windows that's GPLed. It comes with Vorbis support in its 1.30 beta2 version. Very nice program I use it when I'm in windows and don't want to reboot to use cdparanoia. It also includes LAME 3.84 as it's default encoder. Currently it's the only program that i've found that makes encoding Vorbis
.ogg files easy. CDex Homepage, and Source Forge. -
Possible in theory...It would be possible for Transmeta to emulate another ISA than the x86 with use of codemorphing-software, but according to Dave Ditzel "there are no other ISA's that make sense to do". This does not have to mean they won't do it in the future, but you will most likely have to wait a long time...

Variable Bit Rate?
Approaching the problem from the other side, I'm becoming increasingly swayed by the benefits of Variable Bit Rate as a way to improve the quality at the recording side. It only goes so far, of course, but I am hearing an audible difference.
I use (and heartily recommend) CDex as my CD-Ripper, and it is now supplied with the Lame encoder. The latest CDex supports VBR, where you can set a) the lowest bit rate you will accept, and b) a general quality tradeoff parameter, where "VBR0" is the least, and "VBR9" the most compromised in quality. I'm hearing better results with this setup than I did with Steinberg WaveLab 3's VBR system, and it's also allowing WinAMP to show the correct songlength, rather than fluctuating as the bitrate changes.
In effect, the VBR system analyses each audio block and makes a guess as to how much information it can drop. If you convert the resulting file back to WAV and examine in CoolEdit Spectral View, you can actually see the high-end cutoff stepping up and down as the bitrate varies. Noisy sounds such as cymbal splashes get the most bandwidth, while smoother sounds allow a lower rate to be used.
The resulting files are larger, but you could tradeoff more quality to get the size down. With the parameters I use ("VBR0", no less than 96kb/s), the bit rates shoot up to 320kb/s at times, and the average compression ratio is only about 8:1. Still, I think the results are worth it...

Shouldn't they have tested against XFree86 4.0?
Hmm, it occurs to me that they had better tested against XFree86 4.0 since that's a big step towards hardware acceleration support. For the right graphics boards the Linux numbers should have been a lot more like the W98 numbers (extrapolating from Q3A) as can be seen here though it seems the Voodoo fares better under 3.3.6 for now but the latter article also hints at how much can still be done for Voodoo support under linux.
What amazes me most in the article is how BeOS compares very well against windows. I'm really looking forward to a Q3A comparison of BeOS, Linux/XFree86 4.0 and W98 in a few months (best by some neutral agency) when Q3A is there for BeOS, more graphic cards are supported and XFree86 4.X has shed some bugs. -
Impressed...very impressed
OpenBSD 2.7 improves support for high end system boards, SCSI controllers, ethernet interfaces, and adds gigabit ethernet drivers and IPv6 networking.
The first three were of no surprise, but the last two were mind boggling. Gigabit ethernet drivers? Be awhile before I actually pick one of these up...or for anyone else for that matter. And IPv6 protocols? I had no idea someone was trying to implement it. Do you know how much of a problem MS is going to have implement this? A new OS will be needed, I don't think a backwards compatible patch is possible for all of Windows 9X and NT.
Linux will most likely not have a problem implementing this, but it might be awhile before it happens because it is not needed yet.
I'll admit though, there is one thing that BSD has that Linux does not. Girls looked damned good in skin tight, red leather and tiny red horns. (Anyone who was at the Linux World Expo in NY knows what I am talking about :)~ ). If not, visit Day 2 of our trip for a few picks. Look for the scanned custom badges that they were handing out.

Beer and Joy
This past spring John came and gave a lecture for the ACM Chapter at Bucknell University, which I run. He's was nothing short of incredible for the 2 days we spent with him. Very on-the-ball about everything, not to mention a really nice guy. He definately sees the bigger picture.
Pictures are available at http://penguinempire.n3.net
Most fun was going to the bar after the talk. The man drank us all under the table - and told the most interesting stories about various places throughout the world.
If you get a chance to meet him, make the effort. -
Ask Bub! http://bleh.n3.net/articles/bub/I did something similar to this several months ago.
Give it a peek: peek.

Very similar setup...
The 2600's Off the Hook and Afterdark streams with which I am involved ("airs" every tuesday night from 8 PM EST until whenever) is broadcast using AOL Shoutcast on a Cable connection. It is also mirrored by several others, including Fearfree's Hotsoupmedia and Connect[] radio (irc://irc.2600.net:6667#connect). No expensive equipment is required at all, although we'll be getting a mixer for phone call-ins, we use Dialpad now for outgoing. If you're interested, check us out 8 PM EST on irc.2600.net:6667, #offthehook and see us at http://oth.n3.net or email us at radio@rewtme.dhs.org.
