Re:Sales over first 3 years
But the 10 million Xbox mark is wrong. They are at 20 million sold since its launch:
http://n4g.com/news/1877256/ps...The consoles also last much longer. 11 years for a console is amazing. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are online which means content is available to this date. The ease at which game makers can publish to multiple platform is another reason the transition from one console to another is slow since many new games are still appearing on old consoles. I'm not a console guy but most of my friends are and most of them are still using their Xbox 360 or Ps3 because they don't feel they need to dish out more money to play the same game they still love.

Re:Umm... their DRM code works quite well...
Right, when they lock down the entire system. Who would want an x-box anyway?
About 80 million people, much the same with the Playstation 3 which also around 80 million and the XB1 and PS4 are already on around 20 and 12 million respectively. So the answer is that lots of people want these systems despite the lockdown.

Re:This is the game?
Ok, back up, it's not limited to 5v5... it's NOTHING AT ALL right now:

The truck-to-the-head theory still stands.

Re:No need for MMOFPS...
Actually, it's even worse than I thought. It's not limited to 5v5, it's limited to no PvP at all because it was so terribly bad:

Re:It's funny
Sorry, should have clarified.
I was asking about your earlier statement about "sitting out this generation", seemingly that you won't even buy the console, let alone about signing up to PS+
Now, if the deal breaker is netflix then I can understand, but a quick google gave me this: http://n4g.com/news/1278114/sony-confirms-ps4-apps-such-as-netflix-hulu-etc-are-not-behind-ps-paywall

They will NEED all that power,
To maintain your household under constant marketing surveillance. I'm waiting for Bruce Schneier to weigh in on this one, specifically. He does an excellent examination of the general case in his recent "Surveillance and the Internet of Things"
Microsoft is taking Xbox further down the road of current trends in targeting and profiling "users". The model for most web applications and nearly all mobile apps has been that of of the Trojan Horse. An apparently benign, amusing or useful set of functions is presented the user, often below the cost of producing the technology. It does no good to labour the point with tedious argument: the applications are invasive and - depending on your perspective - abusive of privacy.
XBox One is the adaptation of these trends, delivered into the home as a 7/24 data collection head, with a colour camera and a microphone that can't be turned off.

Kinect - Gathering In Junk Closets Everwhere
"I believe that the Kinect is going to do more to revolutionize computer interaction, gaming and functionality more than any invention since the second button on a mouse. They could price this at 500 dollars and I'd put down money that every retailer would blow through their inventory. At 250 dollars, not only will they put one on every computer inside of 2 and a half years, but they are laying down a foundation for young engineers, scientists, hackers and hobbyists to create a community with vast potential."
LOL, did you actually just use the word 'innovation'???
Kinect is a piece of junk clone of old webcam/Sony EyeToy style tech that has been around for many years made by a company that couldn't get Apple or Nintendo to buy their crap. Only Microsoft in their desperation was dumb enough to buy the piece of shit.
Microsoft has spent 500 million dollars desperately hyping this piece of shit by paying anyone they could find to 'hack' this junk add-on and blog about it.
The Kinect tech is so bad that both E3s Microsoft demoed the junk tech they were immediately caught by the gaming press for doing such a hilariously bad job at faking their 'amazing' demos.
Kinect is the most hated add-on in the history of gaming. You can't even mention the device without gamers trashing it.
http://n4g.com/news/916067/i-regret-buying-kinect
Xbox 360 owners were desperate to buy anything for their last place console with Microsoft having closed down all but a tiny number of first party studios leaving the console with almost no exclusive games.

Re:Follow up should be
You're right about one thing, nobody cares...about cell phones. they get them for cheap or free with contract and toss them when the contract is up, never to give a crap about them again. And that is Tegra GPU, that is designed for HD video and NOT for hardcore gaming.
And even with your "sea change" big games are KILLING, or are you gonna say that people are gonna give that up for some Peggle?

Re:Really?
It's beating DVD's adoption rate when it was new, and current sales as well...and doing so with Netflix competing, during a recession.

Re:If you want a cheap laugh....
Looks like that thread was started by one of the new Sony troll accounts. Take a look at Kayla:
OtherOS since it gives you full access to the machine, no more being tied down by Sony.
How the @#$@ are we tied down by Sony? The account was registered just when PSN went down and they have posted nothing other than posts defending Sony. No other posts, no PS3 gamer tag. I bet there are others, but this one is the most obvious.

Re:Waste of R&D dollars, if you ask me
On-board processor was dropped [citation needed]
Depth camera runs at 320x240 so it can't detect fingers? Maybe not, but it's doing infinitely more skeletal recognition than Move is.
Actually, Kinect only allows skeletal recognition for its own Avatars -- that functionality is not available to games developers. Both consoles are doing an equal amount of skeletal recognition in the SDK exposed to developers -- none.
Not ambitious? PS3 or PC could do the same thing trivially with two cameras? OK, then why aren't they?
Because, quite simply, everyone else knows it's not worth it. In fact, Sony was offered the Kinect technology and chose not to use it, specifically because they knew its marketability is limited.
Sony has already tried the no-controller camera-driven games with the EyeToy, which bombed. There have been all kinds of toy programs using webcams, which are all forgotten. Adding a depth camera does not fundamentally change the interaction -- in fact, it barely affects it at all. In userspace, Kinect is EyeToy, is doomed. You cannot play engaging games without a controller.
Overpriced? Perhaps, but I have a hard time believing that Microsoft is pricing it significantly higher than they have to - they want it to be a success and the know it's up against a less expensive competitor.
If they cannot sell two cameras and a toy motor for less than $150 I'll eat my hat. Do you really believe, for instance, that they "can't sell" a 250GB hard drive for less than $129.99 when normal 250GB hard drives can be had for less than $50 (a third of the price, ultimately)?
Basically, it sounds like you don't think they're going far enough, but I think if they went as far as you want them to they would completely price themselves out of the market. At some point you have to compromise ship something practical.
If I put a box of trash up on eBay for only a 10% markup over what it all cost me, how many people do you think will buy it? The market doesn't care what you spent. It cares what the price is and what they get out of it. $150 is going to sail right over everyone's head. You may bookmark this post and refer back to it when the Kinect line is officially discontinued (I will give it say Summer of 2012, after Microsoft loses a lot of money, which is what their games division has been doing all along.)

Re:Isn't this like AACS
I can't find a web page for that particular device, but here is an unlicensed HDCP remover:

Re:The Best-Selling Video Game of All Time...
-
Would you pay $2,000 for a video game?
I'd also like it if there was an option to buy a game for $65 instead of $60 at the store on/near release day that guarantees all future DLC is included.
Imagine how much a lifetime subscription to all of a game's DLC would cost for a game like Rock Band, with over 1,000 downloadable songs at $2 each.

Re:So what were they supposed to do?
Then complete silence until the 24-hour period ended, followed by a brief announcement that "hey, it works again!" and then completely ignoring that it ever happened. Instead they've posted several blog entries that conveniently knock the PSN outage way down the page.
A major bug knocks out significant functionality in a console with an installed base in the tens of millions. Remember, you're the CEO of Sony, and you have to protect the value of your company. It would be criminally irresponsible if you were to rush out an untested fix. If that broke anything you'd be subject to lawsuits. Firmware updates are risky at the best of times.
Meanwhile, your engineers are telling you, "We've got a problem with the date that's screwing up DRM. On our special development consoles, it looks like once the date rolls over in less than 24 hours, the problem will go away. We've tested it on a handful of our customer-style consoles, and from what we can see it appears to be the case there, too. But there are seven 'Fat' models out there and in these few hours we can't test 'em all. Even once that's fixed, we can't absolutely guarantee all will be working after that."
So, you're careful about what you say, and you proceed with deliberate speed. The problem hasn't even been resolved for 24 hours yet! I strongly suspect that they are working on adding a fix to the next firmware upgrade - but that means they'll need to delay the next upgrade, add new tests to the regression tests and QA process, evaluate the fix on all nine models of PS3 (plus the two new slim models in the pipe), and then finally roll it out.
Every company with a substantial codebase and millions of customers is this slow, by necessity. It took Microsoft a week to get the Live network stable after the flood of new users back in December, 2008. A week later (i.e. seven times 24 hours), they gave away a free downloadable game as a further apology. And they still got sued over it.
I strongly suspect that Sony will release more information soon, and may offer a downloadable trinket as a further apology, too. But expecting a giant company to share technical information (that might be used in a lawsuit) in real-time is a bit much.

Yes, Microsoft Pretty Much Did
Just take a quick look at this thread:

Basically a former Microsoft employee is behind these lies about the PS3's reliability.

Re:Wouldn't it have been better...
...if they chose a platform that is more reliable than an Xbox 360.
That's right bitches, 54.2% failure rate.
that would mean and all of my xbox360 buddies must be in the other percentile... say for silent majority? I can pull %s out of my ass too but it won't be pretty.

Re:But...but... they need new technology!
There are moves to add 3D support to Blu-ray. For now they just want to sell you a new TV. Selling you a new DVD player will wait for the next tech cycle.
-
The price drop is interesting.....
.... When they get the reliability improved so that they don't have a 54.2% failure rate, then I might consider buying one.

Dismal Sales?
The sales haven't been beating the Wii. That's all fine and dandy, as neither is the "mature" 360. But when you line up the sales, you see that the PS3 is on track with the 360. Sure, it's comparatively weak up until this point, but the sales rates have been exactly the same.
Combine that with the fact that the PS3 is outselling the 360 in Japan, and it just doubled the 360's sales for last week (less than a month after the Halo 3 release) and even beat the Wii, and I'd say it's too early to put a death knell in the PS3 for this holiday season. You still have UT3 and Haze coming out, along with many other games on the horizon. Price cuts and game releases are both what hte consumer has asked for and what Sony is giving them. To write the console off this early is crazy. -

Numbers say: Wii Owners DON'T stick to Wii Sports
I know I'm repeating myself, but here goes: Wii Attach Rates are higher than PS3's and comparable to 360 at the same point in its life.
The idea that most Wii owners stick with Wii Sports and Wii Play simply doesn't hold.
Personally, I own about 14 non-VC Wii titles and a grand total of 5 PS3 titles (that is counting the online version of Warhawk). -
Wii's Attach Rate better than PS3's
Well, you could point that out, but you'd be lying.
The Wii's attach rate is actually higher than the PS3's, and comparable to the 360's at the same time in its lifespan. This and are two of the newer links I could find. -
China has chosen a side
Looks like China has thrown i's weight behind HD DVD - http://www.n4g.com/industrynews/News-66305.aspx
This could be bad for Blu-Ray. A third format is not needed and I don't see why anyone would put money into it now that cheap HD-DVD will be coming. -
Here's mineI-NOW-GOT-TIRED-OF-IT
Brian Hastings made an excellent point earlier this week: Your friend Reggie invites you over for a Wii Party. It's awesome. You and your friends partake in whatever beverages are legally appropriate for your age group. The next day everyone who went to the party rushes out and buys a Wii. A week later Reggie hosts another Wii Party. This time only half the group comes. It's still fun, but there isn't quite as much shoving to get at the Wiimote. The next week Reggie hosts another Wii Party. You tell him you have bird flu. That's how it goes. It's only fun for so long. Now, mind you, from a business standpoint it's excellent. Consider the distilled truth: "The next day everyone who went to the party rushes out and buys a Wii." What other console can say that? Hell, what other product?
Even if you do play it, you can't do much with each other's friend codes. At least not yet. -

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Metal Gear Solid 4
The New Ratchet and Clank

And it sounds like there are more downloadable games that Sony has yet to announce.
