Re:Before people go nuts...
"Umm.... doesn't MS still have the majority of market share in the server market?"
According to Netcraft Apache has the biggest web presence. Admittedly Apache is not Linux, and there are many Windows boxes out there with Apache, but it does give a good idea of the spread of platforms out there. -

Re:Wow!...and in the link I posted Netcraft reports the number is growing at the rate of half a million a year!
But fear not: it's not a plague. Actually, you know, it often makes your PC go definitely faster.

Re:Who told you that BS? :-(When's the last time you installed it on a computer?
Uh... have a look: Nearly 2.5 Million Active Sites running FreeBSD (June 2004)
The number increased by half a million in the last year. And then there are OpenBSD and NetBSD, not counted in that number. :)For now I'm not counting DragonFly because it's not yet used in production environments. We'll see how it is when it comes out!
Anyway it was a nice troll, since a lot of people fell for it - they didn't post anonymously and change the trolling subject like I did.

Re:Safari is affected also
Doesn't appear so here.
I just tested their spoof http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/10/29/new_u rl_spoofing_flaw_found_in_internet_explorer.html with Safari 1.2 (v125) and it shows 'google.com' in the address bar. I also tested Internet Explorer 5.2.3 on my mac and it also shows 'google.com' in the address bar.
So it would appear that the mac is (at least for the two main browsers of choice) not affected by this security hole. -
Congrats Firefox
And congrats and not being vulnerable to the latest IT URL spoofing flaw. That one's so easy even a kid can do it.

see www.dell.com still runs windows though
Dells main website still runs on Windows/IIS (see netcraft). But hey, the support Linux in an honest and open manner (bit like IBM running their site on AIX (netcraft again). Not that I'm cynical about the support and motives of large corporations around linux. Wouldn't be a marketing ploy would it?
The fact that IBM still run AIX (and don't offer to open source it) is particuarly irritating. Could they be still promoting their proprietary os over Linux perchance? -

Re:A little overblown
Apache 1.3 is a well established product, with over 65% of the market share. It is important that security flaws are quickly found, fixed and patched everywhere, to avoid possible exploits (esp. worms) from spreading and choking the net. I'm sure you can think of good examples of why this is good practice
;-) -
Re:Apache is awful.Ever consider contacting a consultant (or high school kid) that knows how to set it up properly. One of the largest XP Themes sites uses a totally non MS server and couldn't really handle the traffic on the same hardware without a non-ms solution.
Unfortunatly, despite your best attempts to slander the apache software, it looks more like pebkac

Riddle me this then?
Why is your server running 2.0, then?

I'm assuming by your nick here that you're Chip, of course. -
Re:Now when will the US government do this?
Which always made me wonder, does the USDOJ use Linux at all after hounding Microsoft for so long? Netcraft indicates Solaris for their web server, so that could be good news... But what are the clerks running? I wouldn't be surprised if they were still running terminals.
Anyone know? -

I Fail It!Slashdot declares victory over GNAA
Pater - Associated Press Michigan, Detroit OfficeSlashdot, a prominent news web log claiming to be "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters" has claimed victory over the Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA).
With GNAA's trolls resorting to stale material which was relevant for five minutes about three months ago and enabling anyone to "cut and paste" a press release using the Open Source philosophy has led to GNAA's demise. Netcraft confirms it.
GNAA's founder timecop was seen locking up the headquarters one last time. An unassuming outdoor mens room deep in the heart of Tennessee was once host to numerous sessions of blowjobs, anal and creampies attended only by homosexual African-Americans. "I reckon I jest likes fuckin' girls. White girls. [note broken link]" was the only statement given to the press at this time. Former lovers and Windows users Lysol and Roloffle were found standing at "half-mast" upon the sad but inevitable occasion.
Robert W. Malda shared his feelings regarding the event. "Oog the Caveman (a pioneer of ALL CAPS == TEH FNY), The Glorious Meept, Trollaxor, The Turd Report, WIPO Troll, Recipe Troll even goatse had something to contribute to our forums. GNAA is populated solely by crybaby attention whores who wouldn't know a rpm if it bit them on their tender, velvety asshole which is barely covered by a fine mist of downy, pre-pubescent hairs." After a brief reverie Mr. Malda conceded "At least GNAA uses valid xHTML instead of dicey HTML 3.2"
About GNAA:
GNAA (GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) was a troll organization known for its "cut and paste" style of trolls which are written once every six months. It was founded in July 2001 by timecop, found its heyday with "ROR JEWS DID WTC" and slowly faded into the background radiation. Its namesake, a Danish humor movie, is freely available via BitTorrent.
About Slashdot:
Slashdot is the first website dedicated entirely to duplicate articles, groupthink and brilliant trolls. Under the aegis of "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters" and its connections with Open Source Lobbyists has ensured its continued presence on "teh intorweb".
Do you have an Email address? ?
Do you have a computer ?
If you answered "Yes" to all of the above questions, then Slashdotis exactly what you've been looking for!
Join Slashdot today, and enjoy all the benefits of being a full-time Slashdot member.
Why not? It's quick and easy - only 3 simple steps!- First, you have to obtain a copy of Linux and attempt to install it. You can download the operating system using BitTorrent.
- Second, you need to succeed in First Post on

Nah. That's just the Curse of Tecumseh kicking in as a phased rollout. ;-) ;) Servers are kind of sensitive and pick that kind of thing up early. -

Re:And Linus sayeth "I think Hurd is dead."Clearly the Hurd has gone the way of Gentoo and BSD; down the path to oblivion.
BSD down the path to oblivion? If by oblivion you mean being more and more used, and getting better and better, then you're definitely right.

Re:Only be a good think
Heh, that's a bit of a FUD.
If that were true, we'd be seeing daily accounts of Apache servers being hacked and used for malicious purposes. According to Netcraft, Apache is used by almost 70% of the webservers out there. Yet Microsofts IIS is on 20% of the webservers out there, and there have been way, way more malicious attacks on it. So being bigger does not necessarily mean being the bigger target.
IE gets more attacks because it is poorly coded, and you see less attacks on Firefox because it is coded better than IE. If it were to be come more popular, I don't foresee a huge jump in attacks. -

Re:Linus isn't really one to talk.BSD was widely deployed and supported by large corps as well.
BSD (FreeBSD in particular) *is* widely deployed, even if of course not as widely as Linux. But its use is growing.
My guess is that the profound differences between the GPL and the BSD license are kind of an insurance for *BSD's future: it will always be complementary to Linux, attracting different investors and appealing to different users.

To sum it up, FreeBSD is growing - and pretty fast.(Since we are in the Linux section: Of course Linux is growing *faster*. So what?
