Re:Us techies know how to deal with it ...

hardly anyone
Well maybe there not searching on google because there to busy
or setting up internet sites
All you've shown is search patterns.
Maybe the OSS changes less or has better help/forums than commercial software, so there's less need to search on google to solve your problems? -
Re:The Politics of Business
The funny thing is that the Disney.com website "powered by HP" is running Microsoft IIS on Win2k. See netcraft here
rant -
The ex-Starwave group has yet to die or see the light, hence the continued reliance on unscalable crap. Their internally developed software is much worse that you can imagine. Too bad they threw away all the cool technology Infoseek had.
And whatever happened to the Compaq deal ? -
Re:Join the Dark Side, Linus....
Why don't you go over to NetCraft to find out?

Re:His Father is a Dinasaur
This all depends on what you think that the purpose of life is. If you are one of the strange people who think that life is about gathering as much money as possible then time is money, work hard, la la la. If you think (I'm in this category) that you should strive to be happy, make others happy (or at least don't make them unhappy unless they deserve it), and try to make the world even slightly better, then writing software and giving it away is well worth the time you put into it. You enjoy your hobby, get cool software, and other people get software too! You also get software from people with a similar philosophy. And yes, some free stuff is as good as or better than any commercial counterpart. Some examples that are hard to dispute are Hello World and ls. Some debatable ones are Python (a great language, much better than Visual Basic IMO) and Apache (which runs on almost all of the web servers with top uptime, according to netcraft.

WANTED
The now DEAD Bsd Daemon is wanted for its history of Penguin rape If you see him please shove his head up here Remember that goatse.cx runs on linux, not DeadBSD
Thank you for your cooperation. -
Re:Using PHP and MySQL for a website...
You pro-Free Software people can be so brainwashed that you are retarded.
eBay runs IIS. Hear that? eBay RUNS IIS!
The site cgi.ebay.com is running Microsoft-IIS/4.0 on NT4/Windows 98.
Grow some pubes, please. -
And their web servers run Solaris
-
goatse.cx and BSDHeh heh. You must be a troll (hmm, then why am I replying?). The other day I read a post about goatse.cx and BSD, which prompted me to post the following in a vain attempt to get a +1 Funny:
Hey, I thought the big selling point of BSD was that there are no holes in it. That looks like a pretty big hole on the goatse.cx page!
Of course, some dork moderator decided that was offtopic. But that's not really important. More interesting was this reply:
The site goatse.cx is running Apache/1.3.23 (Unix) on Linux
According to Netcraft
So, Mr. Microsoft/BSD troll, you have been refuted. HAND. -
Re:Boy howdy...
Yeah, that's because Apache isn't the fastest kid on the block, especially under a heavy load - I'd love to find out how various web servers handle being slashdotted.
-
No Way Out
Apparently ADTI is not as embarassed as Microsft and Unisys by the fact that they are apparently running Open Source software while simultaneously bashing it.(yes, I am assuming that Rapidsite/Apa is an Apache variant. Am I wrong? I can't find any info on their website about their httpd server software.)

greens.org
The site www.greens.org is running Apache/1.3.24 (Unix) PHP/4.2.1 on Linux
see for yourself -
Re:I'm sorry but they, of course, make a point
He's right: Apache has about double the market share of IIS. Mind you, about half of those Apache servers run on Windows, but it doesn't matter: Apache is OSS. So in this it seems market exposure is not a factor in determining the number of exploits and/or viruses plaguing IIS...and the proof that OSS can be as secure (if not more) than proprietary software.

Re:The Cable Industry
More interesting is the load of other sites hosted by the same company (same box?) This Netcraft list proves quite usefull. The list includes www.illegal.com, www.wife-beaters.com, and www.vandals.com. I just thought that was interesting.

Re:So?
From Netcraft
"The site 24-6-206.wireless.lcs.mit.edu is running thttpd/2.20c 21nov01 on Linux.
Linux users include Rackspace, www.dialtone.com, www.vasoftware.com and Borders.com
We have no uptime data for 24-6-206.wireless.lcs.mit.edu at present, and cannot plot a graph.
The host 24-6-206.wireless.lcs.mit.edu has been added to the list of sites that we may monitor. We will start monitoring 24-6-206.wireless.lcs.mit.edu in the next daily monitoring cycle.
We will continue to monitor this host for a few days, to get enough values to plot a graph. After this time the host will not be monitored again unless it's requested again, or it is one of the most frequently requested hosts."
So for those that are intersted, keep checking this on Netcraft to see on the sitability of the wireless iPac as a hosting platform, you could even compare it to slashdot's uptime. -
Re:In fact, Open Source is SO insecure...
perhaps they will have as much joy as the Saltlake City Winter games site.
netcraft -
Re:none-the-less ...Not that it matters in the least, but according to Netcraft it's running RapidSite (Apache) on IRIX. Although, perhaps that proves a point?
-
Security Issues......would have to be the reason why they're running web site on IRIX.
The more acceptance OSS gains, the worse trolling from M$ monkeys we'll see. When that graph reaches critical peak it will start declining at a very, very steep angle, hopefully bringing down M$, as well.
/.ers got used to trolls but I expect 700+ posts here, anyway.
-
And they're running...Rapidsite/Apa/1.3.20 (Unix), FrontPage/4.0.4.3, mod_ssl/2.8.4, and OpenSSL/0.9.6 on an IRIX machine, according to NetCraft's "What's that site running?" at http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph
They're not running their touted monoculture on their own web servers!

Sounds like kill9 and m0rla got into the true spirit of the competition.
According to Netcraft , www.kdworks.co.kr was running IIS 5.0 since April.

United Under SuSEaccording to netcraft it looks like the main website is both running on and hosted by SuSE. Not that I'm complaining (I happen to like SuSE a lot), it just feels like one of the companies might be taking over the others.

Actually Netcraft says he uses FreeBSD!!
The site www.stallman.org is running Apache/1.3.6 (Unix) on FreeBSD.
Netcraft check of www.stallman.org -
Seems like SuSE is the "Standard"A quick look at Netcraft Survey reveals that this site is running on SuSE Linux.
Also interstingly enough, SuSE 8.0 was fully LSB compliant, the first commercial distro to be so.
My guess is that the base OS will be SuSE. Who's management tools they decide to go with is still anyone's guess. Maybe it'll be a whole new set entirely.

An incredibly obnoxious search engine.
Searches take entirely too long (about ten seconds. May not seem like alot, but it adds up) and the main page is Flash galore. You are also redirected immediately when you enter, so you have to hit "back" *realfast* to get back to Slashdot. The idea of presenting results as a web is kinda neat, but it ends at "kinda neat." The results are confusing and look disturbingly similar to the area of the computer tables behind my three computers--everything interconnected and difficult to follow.
I commend them on creating an original and refreshingly different idea in search engines, but I doubt Google has anything to worry about.
At least they run Linux -
Openbsd is crap!
It is crap, its so crap infact, that the OpenBsd website runs on Solaris!
Netcraft tells it all!
BSD IS DYING! Linux rules! -
Re:Small clarification."But let's not kid ourselves about who IIS' competitors are."
no lets not:
Developer: March %: April %: %change
Apache 53.76 56.38 +2.62
Microsoft 34.02 31.96 -2.06
Zeus 2. 24 2.26 +0 . 2
iPlanet 2.33 2.21 -0 . 2looks like microsoft should still be fearing apache rather a lot more than iPlanet, Zeus or thttpd for actual use which is after all what counts. source: netcraft Survey April 2002

BSD is dying

Typical uptime.
The Social Security Administration's webserver (www.ssa.gov) undergoes a reboot every 3 days on average! Haha, even the SS bastards have problems!

Re:Beaverton School District webserver runs Linux
Hey, its not really fair to just out Beverton as the only district running *nix on their servers. Here is what Netcraft says about other Oregon School Districts:
Starting with the MS supporters we have:
Lake Oswego is running IIS 5.0 on Win2k
Hillsboro is running IIS 5.0 on Win2k
And now on to the *nix supporters:
Eugene is running Apache 1.3.12 with php and ssl on Solaris 8
Tigard is running Apache 1.3.22 with php ssl and perl on Red Hat (I really wish netcraft would be more specific on os versions, oh well)
Portland is running Apache 1.3.24 with php and perl on "linux" (wont say which distro)
Gresham is running WebSTAR (whatever the hell that is) on "Linux"
I'm asuming that Oregon City is running AppleShareIP 6.3.1 on Linux since it has two history entries as such, as well as two unknowns (which is what it is reporting now)
Including Beaverton, that makes it 3:1 in favor of *nix on servers of major Oregon School Districts
Yes, I do live in Oregon, and yes I do go to a Beaverton School but I did have to use the power of google for most of those links -

Beaverton School District webserver runs Linux
According to the Netcraft poke, http://www.beavton.k12.or.us, the public webserver for the Beaverton (Oregon) School District, runs Linux/Apache. Interesting. Guess the ban on non-Windows and non-Mac machines doesn't extend to things that actually require stability.

No. Not in the past. In the present
1) Go to hotmail.com
2) Note the "Sign Up" link and where it points to
3) You will see the IP address 216.32.182.250
4) Go to Netcraft. You will see that Hotmail's back end is still FreeBSD. -
Turnaround not due to Apache 2.0
Apache gained 2.63% and IIS fell 2.06%. However, the previous month showed an even larger change in Microsoft's favor, so Apache is (quickly) making up for lost ground, as discussed before. Was this turnaround due to the release of Apache 2.0?
According to the Netcraft Web Server Survey page, the drop in IIS over the past month was due to a change in Homestead.com's policies:
Microsoft drop back a couple of percentage points this month, primarily attributable to the reaping of around a million expired sites at homestead.com. Homestead used to offer limited free hosting supported by advertising, but has revised its business model. As of April 15th has announced that it is migrating to a traditional paid-for services model.
