Re:Lifestyle investment
Because your social life was not significantly affected, playing them was less of a lifestyle decision than it is with today's video games, which require more serious consideration. I don't remember anyone worrying that their roommate might be addicted to Pac-Man.
These guys beg to differ.

Re:Don't worry about it
For similar reasons, many businesses protect themselves with policies that they do not even look at unsolicited submissions of ideas. That's true in the tech world as well as other creative fields. If you allow yourself to be exposed to somebody else's ideas, and later you come out with something similar, the onus may be on you to prove that you weren't influenced by them.

uh, is this better than playing in the woods?
you know, http://www.newline.com/sites/dnd/ is a movie from a few years ago that also attempted to pull more money out of the dnd machine....but when i introduced my older son to this game, the idea was to promote 'in-person' game play, with friends, doing all of the ridiculous and imaginative stuff through divine social intercourse...i suppose that deep down those books and guides are more expensive (and that doesn't even include the millions of figurines)...but this sort of flies in the face of dnd logic....from wizards (distributor): "D&D is an imaginative, social experience that engages players in a rich fantasy world filled with larger-than-life heroes, deadly monsters, and diverse settings. As a hobby game, D&D is an ongoing activity to which players might devote hours of their time--much like a weekly poker game--getting together with friends on a regular basis for weeks, months, or even years."...and though this 30 year old game doesn't factor in internet play, i'm not so sure that this is the best candidate for mmorpg...for those who ever dressed up and played this in the woods, peace out...and for those who will only know this online, then i'm kinda sorry for that you might not really ever get the experience...

Re:? Making stuff up?
And, much like the Passion of the Christ, it shows glaring the massive double standard being applied. Violence, blood, and gore are bad and will scar and ruin our children... except for when it's an accurate reproduction of a Bible story. Magic, magical creatures, and fantasy worlds are evil and the devil trying to corrupt the children, unless it an accurate reproduction of a beloved Christian author's work.

Re:Interesting Verbage.
Because CNN and Time Warner have no interest in making movie downloading as unattractive as possible, and have no intent to word their stories that put the worst possible slant on torrent users, No siree, Bob.

Bypassing the link with a suspicious referrer query string Or do you want to spend all day clicking the monkey for Prince of Wands? Editors, are you allowing this?

Re:For all three
This was a trilogy shot right outside the establishment orbit; filmed in Jackson's native New Zealand and funded by the independent New Line Cinema
New Line is owned by AOL Time Warner, according to New Line's About Us page. Which, oddly, also calls itself "independent" on that same page; maybe that title loses its meaning when a studio owned by one of the major studios (Warner) titles itself that way. -
Great value
I agree completely. But then, New Line has made a habit of releasing some of the best DVD's available. Cf. David Fincher's Se7en, which also featured four very informative commentary tracks by a number of cast and crew personnel. Admittedly it was not of the scope of LotR, but a fascinating movie nonetheless. That and Fox's special edition of Fincher's Fight Club were pretty much my favorite DVD's as far as fulfilling the promise of "film school in a box." However, New Line's edition of P.T. Anderson's Boogie Nights is another great one. Basically, no one has done DVD as consistently well as New Line -- with the possible exception of Criterion.
