Re:Taken from reddit comments
Take a look at this:

Direct copy of CoD assets, like it or not.That doesn't actually prove anything. After all, this is exactly the same as the one found in the game. But the models were redone by hand. You can even prove that by looking at the very basic information in nifskope. The only thing that image actually proves? It looks exactly the same, nothing more.
Until the assets from both games are pulled and compared using 3DS, nifskope, maya and so on, this actually boils down to a whole lot of "he said/they said/etc." Even that thread on PCMR doesn't prove shit except they "look the same" and basing anything off that is fully useless. Since a modeller can make it look the same and have vastly different methods to create the same effect.

Re:4?
After you play it through (assuming you are playing on a PC), check out nexusmods. I went out and bought the PC version just for the mods. They add an incredible amount of story an detail to an already rich universe.

Thank you Jackie. We've been playing on console, but plan is to build a rig to complete our gaming experience for the family. Funnily enough, I'm the least active gamer in the family (as in I play the least, again to you AC). When I go to spec the gaming box, if I happen to mention that it's for my wife I fully expect the "sure it is" retort I got when bought the original XBox.
Ha, my good lady has just started watching the trailer again. I can hear it playing in the background. The woman is obsessed - heard her shout "bobble head".
Anyway, again... thank you for the advice. It'll be something to look forward to when we do get to play it on PC. -

Re:completely irrelevant
In Bethesda's case the policy seems to be "let the community figure it out." Skyrim has SkyUI, which really takes advantage of the real estate (and cursor). Just allowing for mods and having well-documented tools is a step in the right direction - the people that are bent out of shape enough to do something about it will, and the people that don't mind aren't going to be looking for UI mods anyway.
JC2 handles fine on the PC - the fact that on first run it loaded to a "Press Start" screen felt like sloppy QA more than anything else. Apparently the game plays fine with a controller - why the game expects one instead of checking to see if one is plugged in is beyond me. Psychonauts actually has x-box controls in the game menu screens - it would be cool if those weren't there by default and popped up when you're playing with a controller but as-is the x-box menu screens really drive home the fact that the PC version is a port.
Borderlands is fine once you get used to it - I came in from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series so the fact that the BL games are very arcade-like to the point that an the "INSERT COIN" message on death would not be out of place was pretty jarring. Like the Metro series it doesn't need a particularly deep or complex UI.
I wouldn't mind some developer out there remembering that ten percent of the population is left-handed and making handedness a character option, but that's ultimately up to the animators and not a console -> PC issue. Ever watch a lefty use a bolt-action rifle?
As to interface improvements, in the general sense... allowing for key remapping is a pretty standard feature - to the point where having hard-mapped keys that can't be remapped can be pretty jarring (F1/F2/F3 in Fallout 3 / New Vegas, for example). Allowing for customization without clearly explaining why the keys are where they are by default can cause difficulties as well - Dishonored allows for remapping but the default layout is fairly organic once you're used to it.... muck around with one or two keybindings and suddenly RSI is through the roof... with no menu indicator of what the old keybind was without resetting everything to default.
The real console -> PC issue seems to be font sizing and use of real estate more than anything else - PC users are typically sitting closer to smaller higher resolution screens whereas console users are typically sitting further back, looking at larger, lower resolution displays.

Re: It.. can't be true!
Not that I'm aware of... you need a PC, and nVidia is pretty much the only game in town too (apparently it's possible with AMD but painful and inferior). Myself, I have it hooked up to a home theatre with 720p projector (sadly, 1080p 3d gaming is not possible yet... we need HDMI 1.4b/2 devices for the necessary bandwidth).
The interesting thing about 3D gaming is that not all games work equally well. The 3D stuff generally works fairly decently, what it mainly comes down to is the 2D elements. For instance you'll get a menu in front of the 3D scene, but it's depth isn't set correctly so your brain will be convinced it should be behind the scene... really messes with your eyes in an unpleasant way.
:)So with most games it's somewhat "accidental" how well they work with 3D (or don't). A relative handful actually take the effort to address such issues during development and get fully "3D Vision Ready" certified. nVidia keeps a big list of games (and their 3D playability) here. Fortunately with some games, mods can fix the 3D deficiencies.

open worlds and Civ
Thanks to nexusmods.com I've been replaying the Bethesda open world games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas) for years now. These not only still look spectacular on modern hardware, but entire new quest lines and regions are available via modifications that are easily managed via the (GPL'ed) mod management tool.
With the release of Civilization V: Brave New World DLC, Civ V has finally become a superior successor to all its predecessors (though it hasn't quite eclipsed the story orientation of Alpha Centauri), so that gets its fair share of game time, too.
Finally, I was bored the other day and decided to finally try out GTA:IV. While I had been a fan of the original two GTA games, the 3D once since hadn't managed to include sufficiently interesting story and characters to really engage me. So while I'd played the Mafia series, the recent GTA games were tried and quickly set aside. Imagine my surprise to discover that GTA:IV had actually improved. The characters are still lacking depth, but then so are those in Bethesda games. The important thing was they were finally engaging enough to not seem completely interchangeable, and the quests were aligned to some kind of plot I could follow. So for now, I'm happily playing through it and look forward to when GTA:V is released for the PC.

Re:Well no shit
I'll take "dumbed down" over poor game mechanics any day of the week. Oblivion's leveling system punishes you for failing to micromanage your skill use properly, that's not good gameplay.
While I would have preferred something more along the lines of nGCD, I've found that Skyrim's perk-centric character system actually works pretty well to encourage specialization. I've made three characters so far and they all play completely differently.

Re:Is it Bethesda or the PS3?
Your loss. You might not be aware of some of the better mods out there; there's a lot more to Elder Scrolls mods than chainmail bikinis and pimped-out player homes.
A few of the better ones:
Unofficial Skyrim Patch
SkyUI
Static Mesh Improvement Mod
Open Cities SkyrimThere's also some really neat stuff going on with SkyProc, a Java library that can read and write Skyrim plugins.

Automatic Variants -

Re:Bethesda is just incompentant
* Unofficial Skyrim Patch
* Unofficial Obilivion Patch
* Unofficial Morrowind Patch
* Unofficial Fallout 3 PatchStarting to see a pattern here? And that's just what was "easily" fixable by the modding tools.

Re:The questions developers ask
Red Orchestra began as a mod. Garry's Mod for source. Desert Combat mod. Battlefield 2142 is essentially a mod for BF2. Not to mention Fallout, New Vegas series mods, Skyrim etc.

Re:The questions developers ask
Any examples from this century? Serious question.
All of Bethesda's RPG games are a shining example. I would never buy these for a console, you miss out on entire games worth of free content.

Re:YES! and OMG NUUUUU
Sure they are unbalanced, but that's part of the fun, it's a single player game
Can't say I agree with that at all. When you can easily win any encounter, the game gets boring quick. It's painful with Bethesda games, they put so much effort into world design and then drop the ball on what should be the easier task of balancing combat.
Here's a good example of one of the more embarrassing flaws in Oblivion combat:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wK9dc_O3pM
The video is for a mod that fixes it:
http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=31882it's a single player game, so you let people do crazy things if they want. It doesn't hurt anyone else.
When it comes to using mods that are unbalanced, then yeah, I agree that it is up to the individual. But when the base game has unbalanced mechanics, it really hurts the experience for a lot of us. Best case scenario, we end up having to mod the game to hell and back to make it challenging - and most studios are a lot less modder-friendly than Bethesda.

Re:Fix bugs first
You aren't kidding. Luckily, there already a mod that is aimed squarely at fixing bugs (The Unofficial Skyrim Patch). Of course, it's only good for PC players. XBox and PS3 are kind of stuck. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=19 for the Patch.

Re:Why X360 and Kinect exclusive?
PC gamers already can FUS-RO-DAH in Skyrim with this mod - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5626
Enough with the conspiracy theories. Your paranoid sense of persecution is unwarranted.

These kinds of mods are exactly why I prefer PC gaming.
