15 Jan 1973 First shipment of Micral N to INRA Institut National de Recherche Agronomique, a process control computer, the first world microcomputer based on Intel 8008 microprocessor.
Here's a little more about it. -
Re:My two cents : French patent lawI happen to have the text somewhere in my basement, but I would need some time to find it. However these dispositions are taught in the intellectual property course in the Ecole Centrale. If really needed, I can also contact two friends, one of them an inventor who used that clause, the other who works in a french IP lawyer cabinet (and who incidentally sent me the papers I have on the subject).
Feel free to send me a note at mailto:armingaud@noos.fr with SLASHDOT in the subject line so you do not get deleted by the antispam.
Notice that this disposition is not seen favourably by US firms who are probably lobbying a lot to have it removed with a pretext of EU law uniformization. Michel Rocard (European Parliament) is certainly aware about that.

Re:Choose and Win
For what it's worth, The two french ISP are :
- The (only) cable company in Paris (and a handful of medium cities), Noos (http://www.noos.fr/ or http://www.noos.net/),
- the other is a DSL (and modem) provider, club-internet (http://www.club-internet.fr/)
This DNS wilcarding (with http redirection to commercial sites where no match is found in b3gtelecom's "typo DB") has just been activated this month;
AFAIK it only managed to increase calls to tech support, mainly for misconfigured wifi routers showing the "wildcard" page redirection sometimes. it doesn't make the troubleshooting any easier...
(Wardriving in Paris is a pleasure, there are default-config APs everywhere!)
Well, Farewell, NXDOMAIN ! I'm afraid I will not see you for a long time (since I have no other choice for a broadband ISP...) -
Just one of many agents that inhibit HIV in a tubeThere's no reference to this news so it seems unpublished. The Scotsman has a similar report with more critical notes:
"Annabel Kanabus, director of AVERT, an HIV and AIDS charity said: "We regularly hear about drugs that seem good in the test tube, but, if they are toxic to HIV how toxic are they to other parts of the body?"
There is a published paper on croc serum in a low impact journal. From the abstract:
Rob Barker, professor of Immunology at Aberdeen University, said: "I would not describe the immune system of any species as 'more powerful' than a human's, it is designed to cope with different threats.
"There are real problems in simply using factors from another species in humans, since the human immune system will recognise these as foreign and attack them, potentially causing allergic-type reactions."
"The antiviral effects of the alligator serum were difficult to evaluate at high concentrations due to the inherent toxicity to the mammalian cells used to assay viral activities."
Not much chance for using it as an anti-viral agent. -

Re:Cobol?
COBOL does what it does and does it well enough that it's not been unseated, but it sure as heck isn't cool.
How tough would it be to write a COBOL-to-C parser? (Or COBOL-to-yourlanguagehere.) (Here's a COBOL-to-Java attempt...)
I'd love to see COBOL programs ported to Perl. They could then be made into web services, or just continue to run as-is (but possibly on a different machine, if the old machine that's running COBOL doesn't support Perl).

Roland Piquepaille is a spammer
Piquepaille == spammer. Instead of using email to spam, he spams sites like Slashdot (and many others) using his blog.
Roland Piquepaille steals content and simply posts it on his blog without permission, how would you feel if someone took your hard work and just reposted it making them cash and you nothing ? call it what it is theft
Here is a direct quote from Piquepaille's Blogads advertising entry:
My stories are often mentioned by Slashdot, BoingBoing or Nanodot.
Smart Mobs and Mindjack Daily Relay are also sites where I put
summaries of my stories, giving this blog a traffic of 150,000 visits
per month. So if you have an interesting technology to promote, put
your ads on this blog.
Why doesn't he just say "So if you want to associate yourself with a spammer, give me your money."?
Ignore the fact that he has no "stories" of his own, offers no original content and zero insight.
Like most spammers, he has no incentive to stop because it's profitable for him to spam Slashdot and other sites.
Make it unprofitable. Stop visiting his weblog. Express your
displeasure to the editors. Express your displeasure to Radio Userland
(they are a quiet participant in his spamming
[weblogs.com] since Userland has a small ad on the blog). Express your
displeasure to the advertisers. Let them know you won't buy products
they advertise there. Last of all, express your displeasure about his spam to Piquepaille himself.
You make Piquepaille's continued spamming possible with your traffic.
(As for all the spam references in this post, some might call it poetic justice. Maybe Google will pick it up and let everyone know.)br

Piquepaille == spammer == scammer
Its not "his site"
Its Radio Userland's site AKA radio.weblogs.com AKA the company that Dave Winer founded. Winer is the RSS / OPML / XML guy who is now at Harvard.

Re:Wait for GameBoy XP
It should be pointed out that the Gameboy Advance does some trickery to accomplish Gameboy Classic compatibility. It's both a software and hardware based backfall, and it's not perfect but it works well enough to cover the vast majority of the games.
Still, if for some reason you feel the need to EMULATE a Gameboy Classic on a Gameboy Advance without resorting to it's built in capability then feel free to put your roms on a Flash Advance cartridge and run those Gameboy roms under GBonGBA. It's still slow and beta, and there's some question as to if it will ever run full screen, but then -- on future Gameboys, it just might. ;) -
Re:GreatGet the patch from France. France is one of those "free countries".
" How to use iDVD2 without an internal Apple SuperDrive
:
I am unaware how many different version of iDVD2 are circulating, but I have already listed 3 versions. This is why I have provided three different patches to cover at least these 3 versions of iDVD2.
A quick reminder on how to apply one of those patches to iDVD2:
- download the patch file
- Make a copy of the iDVD.app package and open it within MacOS 9.
- Move the file "iDVD" to the desktop. The file can be found in Contents/MacOS
- Doubleclick the patch application and patch that iDVD App.
- Once applied, you'll find the file patched and the original file renamed to "iDVDOld"
- Move the file "iDVD" back into the folder "Contents/MacOS"
- close the (MacOS X) Package again and reboot into MacOS X to try it out "I got these instructions from here.

Re:"Standards of the adult community as a whole"
1. Not quite pornographic, but World of Free Games comes up ninth (individual domains, 11th total) on a google search for "free games" and popped up with a casino ad the first time I went there, and has a prominent ad right near the top for Bullz-Eye.com, "the Guys Portal to the Web" (which also pops up with an online dating service).
2. 16th by domain in the same search (19th overall), Freefungames has a banner ad for an adult-oriented matchmaking service. (I realise I'm being slightly picky here)
3. 24 Hour games pops up with an ad that says "You have been surfing adult sites! Click here to download Internet Eraser" and has links to adult galleries, strip-saver, and a sex video site. This is still on the first page of the results.
Honourable mentions: This site has a similar ad for Internet eraser, in a pop up, and also the X-10 camera ad. This one comes up (still in the first 100 results) for the same search. Again, it's not pornographic but I wouldn't want to have kids gambling on the internet. This French site bombards you with popups, half of them porn, that reopen when you close them.
That's about as far as I'll go. I'm sure there's more in the same search (Still in the first 100 matches) but I'm too lazy to check. Also, I'm sure that "free movies" and nintendo cheats will lead to a similar result. -
Re:Linux DVD
Ok. I did some more research. It'll probably get all lost in this thread.
However, imaclinux has reported that it's possible to watch DVDs on LinuxPPC.
They link to this location.
I only have ydl, so I'm not able to give it a spin.
As another note, could I get in trouble for posting this? I guess it's too late if your reading it.
