Re:Why I switched to opera
"There are Firefox features I love (extensions, typing "google foo" in the address bar, many others) and Opera features I love (seems smaller & lighter, I prefer it's implementation of tabs, many others)"
You can type "g foo" in the address bar and it works the same way. There's a program called Opsed that makes it really easy to edit Opera's search bar, including those "keys". (for me, e does ebay, n does newegg, p pricewatch, a AniDB, i IMDB, it's really nice)
Also, you can get Opera's tabs to work EXACTLY the same (close icon, no close icon, depending on how you prefer it, and you can get the tabs to dissappear if there's only one active at the moment). Check this out :

Has an IE and Firefox exe. The IE one is close, the Firefox one is pretty spot-on. -

I have a few programs that atleast help a little to secure windows.

Still, I doubt I'd want the un pc savvy or the mentally retarded using teh above and muckign with their PC so much it won't boot. So, user beware.

They're umbilical cord blood stem cells
From a blog i found on google:
<SNIP>
I have known about this for some time, but because I didn't want to be guilty of the same hyping that is so often engaged in by some therapeutic cloning proponents, I waited until it was published in a peer reviewed journal. Now it has been and the news is HUGE: Korean scientists have used umbilical cord blood stem cells to restore feeling and mobility to a spinal cord injury patient. I have no link, but I do have the report published in Cytotherapy, (2005) Vol 7. No. 4, 368-373.
The patient is a woman who has been paraplegic from an accident for more than 19 years. (Complete paraplegia of the 10th thoracic vertebra.) She had surgery and also an infusion of umbilical cord blood stem cells. Note the stunning benefits: "The patient could move her hips and feel her hip skin on day 15 after transplantation. On day 25 after transplantation her feet responded to stimulation. On post operative day (POD) 7, motor activity was noticed and improved gradually in her lumbar paravertebral and hip muscles. She could maintain an upright position by herself on POD 13. From POD 15 she began to elevate both lower legs about 1 cm, and hip flexor muscle activity gradually improved until POD 41." It goes on from there in very technical language.
The bottom line is this, from the Abtract: Not only did the patient regain feeling, but "41 days after [stem cell] transplantation" testing "also showed regeneration of the spinal cord at the injured cite" and below it. "Therefore, it is suggested that UCB multipotent stem cell transplantation could be a good treatment method for SPI patients." (My emphasis.)
We have to be cautious. One patient does not a treatment make. Also, the authors note that the lamenectomy the patient received might have offered some benefit. But still, this is a wonderful story that offers tremendous hope for paralyzed patients. Typically, it has been extensively ignored in the American media (although it has gotten some foreign press attention). (Can you imagine the headlines if the cells used had been embryonic?)
One last point. This is a patient with a very old injury--making the results even more dramatic.
Onward!

The future of manned spaceflight looks interesting
It's looking like there should be quite a bit of competition soon in human orbital spaceflight. Here are the
various competitors I can think of off-hand:
* USA: Shuttle-derived system, probably with a CEV capsule on top. There's several downsides to a shuttle-derived system, but it keeps the constituencies happy and should have enough government momentum to keep on going.
* Russia and Europe: Kliper's been searching around for financial support for a while, and it looks like they finally got at least -some- funding from Europe.
* China: various iterations of Shenzhou spacecraft
In the private sector:
* t/Space: The (Rutan-affiliated?) company just completed a parachute drop test and water landing of a full-scale model of their proposed CXV space capsule. It's uncertain if they'll get more funding from NASA, but their concept seems sound and may get private investment. Oh, and their web page has some really spiffy videos.
* SpaceX: They've already announced their intent to compete for Bigelow's
orbital prize, and their upcoming man-rated Falcon V will be large enough to carry a Gemini-style capsule.
Now what about destinations? Besides the ISS, we've got Robert Bigelow's inflatable space station modules, which should be up and operational by 2010, with several prototype launches before then. He's planning on selling these modules to various groups and countries, so hopefully we'll have several different space stations up there.
Between Shenzhou 8 and 9 China is planning on launching a small orbital laboratory, which Shenzhou 9 will be docking with. Various members of the Chinese space program have also been visiting Bigelow's facility, so perhaps we'll see them doing something with his modules.
The future should be interesting. -

That sounds just like what I said in my essay The Importance of Interoperability. Maybe you have some insightful comments to add to it?

Design vs. Implementation
``It's well known that the *nix operating system model is more secure by default, through good design.''
Is it the Windows design that is insecure, or the implementations? Of course, that begs the question if there actually _is_ a Windows design to speak of. Well, what is there in the APIs that Microsoft publishes that is necessarily insecure, and what is there in the Unix APIs that is necessarily insecure?
I can answer parts of the Unix side; the fact that software needs to be all-powerful to do a single privileged operation (such an binding to a port below 1024). Functions like tmpnam(3), which generate predictable filenames.
Things like the general lack of bounds checking (leading to buffer overflows) are implementation issues, and could be overcome by using better programming languages. -

Palm's Mistakes or Microsoft's Tactics?
``Analysts say Palm just couldn't nail down the formula for over-the-air synchronization with Microsoft Outlook, which business users demand and RIM nailed with its BlackBerry device.''
That's not Palm's fault. Microsoft keeps their protocols and file formats secret, so as to make it difficult for competitiors to develop products that interoperate with Microsoft's. One more instance of Microsoft driving competitors out of the market by using their desktop monopoly, and one more reason why we must demand open formats and protocols. -
Re:This is the general direction of the industry
``Having an isolated "free" system that can't interact with other "non-free" systems is not really how we expected things to turn out, I bet.''
Which is why we need to protest the use of proprietary formats and protocols. Just having the right to reverse-engineer them for interoperability reasons (as we have in the EU, AFAIK, IANAL) is not enough. We need the information required for interoperability to be freely available, or there will be no level playing field, no healthy competition, but rather vendor lock-in and monopolies. I think it's reasonable to legally require this information to be free.
I also wrote an essay on the subject (still undergoing minor changes, feedback welcome). -

Falun Gong...
In case you don't know about the Falun Gong group mentioned in the summary, I've read about them. This group is categorized as a destructive cult by various organizations and cult experts, including Rick Ross (famous anti-scientology deprogrammer). Apparently its teachings include conspiracies, alien invaders and interdimensional travel (WTF? O.o)
Here's more info on Falun Gong, and a testimony of a former member (which doesn't say much unfortunately).
Anyway, it's sad that the reason this cult was censored, is not because they abuse their followers physically and emotionally, but because they threaten the chinese national security. -

Different Rules do Apply
``It is amazing, it is like when it comes to IT, the best brains in business suddenly loose their intelligence, as if different rules apply when it comes to computers.''
But different rules do apply. Your choice of operating system largely determines what appliciations you can run on it. If you get lots of documents in proprietary formats that only certain software can run, this might limit your choice of operating system (might, because there's always emulation). You would also need system administrators with different skill expertise.
The same does not apply to trucks. No matter what brand of truck you buy, it will run on the same fuel and be able to carry the same cargo.
In other words, what makes the rules different for software is the lack of interoperability. No real competition is possible as long as proprietary formats and protocols are the norm. -

It's Free as in Speech.
In both the text translation (of Google) and the English text posted at opensource.org, the term used is "Free Software", not "open source." I wonder why the title and the text here at Slashdot use the term "open source"?
The spanish text says "Software Libre", which means "Free-as-in-speech Software".
In Article 3, section 1, we read that "Software Libre" is one whose user license guarantees faculties to:
- Use the program for any purpose without restrictions,
- Inspect exhaustively the program's functioning mechanisms,
- Customization and distribution of program's copies, and
- Modifying of the program and free [ as in speech ] distribution of both the alterations and the resulting new program, under the same conditions
(retranslated from spanish)
So, they're talking about Open Source Software. Spanish does have different words for the different meanings of "Free": "Libre" (as in speech), and "Gratis / Gratuito" (as in beer).
It kinda surprised me to see "Free distribution" use "Libre" versus "Gratis" (in spanish, the term "distribución gratuita" is used very often). They were very careful when wording this law. -

Re:Hexus must be happy with /.!
If you can get to the Coral Cache, read the fine article (and this is the printable single-screen version) and see that the master-slave relationship puts an existing ATi card into 'slave' position. The Crossfire 'Master' card has an FPGA to unite the output of the Crossfire card and its slave. Then read about how the Crossfire features can be switched on and off without restarting your computer.
Hexus rate Crossfire as a preferable method to link two cards than nVidia's SLI. However, the present execution of the system (like many ATi things) requires the kinks taken out first. -

You know, I was about to ask the rocket scientists hanging around here (hi guys!) about how small new generation comsats were going to be. After all, there has been a tremendous increase in miniturization and technology since the original GPS sats were launched. (e.g. better microprocessors, denser batteries, more efficient solar panels, better propulsion, etc.) If we could get these sats small enough, it might be possible to deploy a GPS system for Mars in one or two launches.
Then I saw the borg cube that assimilated the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory (Mirror) Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor.
On another note, the picture makes it look like the design hasn't changed much from the original NAVSTAR configuration. I assume that these satellites are merely sharing the same chassis, and have very different internals? -
