The Windows Boot CD is based on Bart Lagerweij's PE Builder. Go to the BartPE website to learn how to brew your own customized Windows Boot CD.

There are scads of folks out there busily building their own add-ons and plugins for the BartPE environment which you can just download and include in your own installation- everything from Java Runtime to Citrix ICA client to Trillian. And literally a hundred more.

I've found it an indispensible Windows recovery tool. I can boot off the CD and run Adaware, Spybot and McAfee scans on the system hard drive, removing all the IE trojan nonsense before it starts up and get resident in memory. I can connect to network shares and transfer data from machines that won't boot.

You don't even have to boot from the CD- it will autorun in an active Windows XP session and give you the same NU2 menu. So it can be used to run applications locally that you don't want to install on the client's machine.

Only one plant in South Australia, and I think they have never allowed possession of small amounts -- it's just not a criminal offense. (That one plant was previously 3, and before that 10 -- but they realised that the output of 10 plants was a lot more than one person usually smokes.)

Check around the ISP's, sounds like your pricing's stuck a few years behind. Might I suggest whirlpool , if you haven't already seen it? Anywhere that Tel$tra's got a DSLAM, you can also get any other ISP in australia that sells ADSL.

I'm in Mount Isa, and I get 512/128 from Internode at $59/mo. That's with 12GB download (capped at 40kb/s after that), a pile of quota-exempt mirrors (mmmm... gentoo rsync :-), a heap of free radio relays.. etc. If you don't like caps, you can get a "flat-rate" plan that does some prioritisation depending on your current download totals compared to everyone else currently using flatrate. But anyhoo, that's enough Internode fanboyism from me :-)

Upload is unmetered.)

I've seen some pretty unusual Windows desktops at Customize.org which use third party applications to replace everything from the Windows shell to system fonts. There's a handy little utility called Resource Hacker which lets you edit Windows executable files, allowing almost infinite customization. Some of the finer results of using Resource Hacker can be seen in the tutorials here.

As for the UNIX desktop front, everything these days seems to want to copy the better points of the MacOS and Windows. A notable exception is XFCE which is a Gtk2/Gnomed clone of CDE. If you wanna see some odd attempts at user interfaces, I urge you to check out some of the others at http://www.plig.org/xwinman/ (yes the site still exists and is actually fairly recent). I honestly believe this site is a MUST READ for anyone that is going to use UNIX on the desktop).

For the furriners, the original Holden Commodore design was originally an Opel (also Vauxhall in the UK and Chevrolet in RSA).

Not long (year or two) after they came out, a local newspaper (The Sunday Times) ran a radio ad (!) touting the quality of their transcription, in which a dude tries to sell his Commodore and gets it listed as a commode (which his friend informs him is "a kind of a toilet"), and within weeks I heard a send-up of it on a different radio station in which the advertiser is trying to sell his toilet and gets it mis-labelled as a Commodore (which his friend informs him is "a kind of a car").

They also have a reputation for being easy to steal, in case you hadn't guessed from my first par. (-:

Internode (in .au) uses this method.

It seems to work rather well - I'm on a "Flat-Rate" Plan. The more you download compared to everyone else *downloading at that moment* , the lower your priority in the packet queue is. They've got it set so that after about 30GB+ you eventually hit 10kB/s - this is mainly due to .au's pitiful and expensive broadband infrastructure.

They're very up-front about it, they specifically mention in all the FAQ's that it's flat-rate, not unlimited etc and give you rough ideas of performance vs download outcomes. The bonus of course is that they don't give a damn about how much you download , the system is self-controlling, and there's no overusage fees. I average about 12GB/mo (p2p, surfing etc) and have no issues with speed deviations from my rated (512/128) speed. People have hit 50-60GB / month downloads at times, which is amazing (in .au terms) for a plan that costs AUD99 a month.

Compare this to Telstra where on a AUD179/mo "Business" account we were charged an extra $1000 for downloading (and uploading!!) a total of 14GB. Bastards.

IANAL, but it's my understanding that the Communications and Privacy acts make it illegal for telco's and ISP's to snoop on customer activity (wiretapping). As such, they are not responsible for what their users do. They are also not entitled to reveal the details of users who are up to illegal activity unless compelled to by a court or the police.

A while ago there was a thread in the Internode forum on Whirlpool about this, where one of Internode's representatives explained it all (well, what their lawyers told them)

What you're talking about has already been done by my ISP in Australia. They introduced their FlatRate plans when every other ISP with unlimited download plans was either changing them or going out of business. Their plans have remained sustainable. Since then, other providers have started up again with the unlimited plans, although not using Internodes priority system.

One unintended consequence is that any packets going through the priority system, even if they're at a high priority, are slowed down. In response to this, Internode has put most of the main gaming servers people use outside of the priority system.

Internode use CISCO routers and a homebrew software solution to manage all this stuff.

1. Download this small file: HERE

2. Backup the original IpDrv.u file located at "C:\Program Files\Army Operations\System"

3. Replace it with the new IpDrv.u file.

4. Now run AA1.9 and try to login.

Do they use CAN electronics like pair-gain systems or RIMs? Those CAN electronics will stop you from getting DSL. A PGS splits one pair of copper into 2 or 4 phone lines. The older ones used an analogue splitting method (So max speed is either 28.8 or 9.6) whereas the newer ones are a bit like ISDN but you only get one of the two channels. A RIM does this on a larger scale (eg 480 lines from a set of fibres).

Here is Australia it used to be 2400bps minimum speeds by mandate, but now they've increased it to 19.2kpbs *throughput* (which means if the line can't handle it you can use compression to increase it - don't follow their logic really).

I use a 1.5M/256kbps ADSL and it costs $150/month (AUD, so ~$100US/month) but the speeds are not guarenteed if you download a lot (as in over 10GB/month). And this is considered one of the best deals in the country.

If you want cable you usually get 3GB/month *transfers* (uploads counted) for the most part, then either pay 14c/MB or get capped to 28k (depending on company, it's not a choice). There's a big thing about a woman who left p2p running accedentially and racked up a $10000 bill for 2 months!

Read this post for an example. Basically they don't tell the other ISPs on their wholesalers list when new exchanges are ADSL-enabled, so that customers sign up with Telstra because they think they can't get a connection through other ISPs. (The author of that post, Simon Hackett, is the CEO of Internode, one of the larger - and best -- wholesale ISPs).

You can't do illegal things, or violate copyrights, trademarks, etc, etc. There's no guarantee of any service at all and they can terminate the agreement at a whim (and if you don't pay and are reselling they get to grab your customers, but I won't and I don't)... There's a nasty bit about service people coming onto your premises, but I don't have any of their hardware anyway...

However, in relation to running servers they are great the relevant FAQ entry even has some humour (if you want a static IP you need the business service at this ISP):

Can I run a 'server' on my Internode Personal ADSL service, even though the IP address is dynamic?
Yes, if you want to do that, you are welcome to do that. Be aware that the Personal ADSL service is not designed for this, but it doesn't prohibit it.

In particular, since your IP address is dynamic (it varies over time), this means you can't run a server and expect its 'internet location' to remain fixed in time.

So its fine for short term server situations (if you want to put up a server so a friend can download something from your computer, or whatever).

Be aware that if you wind up running a mail server, and it winds up being a spam relay, we will terminate your connection with extreme predjudice and without warning, until you fix your computer up so that it doesn't do that any more.

Ditto if your computer suddenly turns into a robot on behalf of one of the many weird and wonderful ways that Windows can be compromised by nasty script kiddies.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance (or something).

And they seem to encourage NAT, setting things up so that even people who can't work out how to turn on ICS in windows (let alone run a linux type NATing firewall) can plug an ethernet ADSL modem into a hub and run PPPoE clients on each machine seperately. I suspect this would negatively affect the speed (probably splitting the bandwidth equally between connections - rather than sharing like in NAT), but I might have to try it soon just in case :)

There are a few providers that provide mirrors of linux software...

and some of these provide this software free, or rather it doesn't count towards the download quota.

However one can see that the providers in Australia are now slowly starting to shift away from the circa 13c/meg exceess download rates.

A few have started offering plans that slow down once you reach your cap.(Netspace)

One provider (Internode) even has a new flat rate sort of plan in which there are no download 'limits' or caps as such but rather a priority list, and peoples place on the priority list is based on how much they download...

then in times of congestion those on the bottom of the priority list slow down a lot, those in the middle slow down a little, and those on the top dont slow down.

Then when it gets uncongested again, everyone downloads fast...

So I think theres some good Broadband plans out there now in Australia, the biggest problem in relation to Oz Broadband is Telstra... they have monopolised literally the whole broadband market and they are pretty much the sole reason why the uptake of broadband in Australia has been so slow.

Sign up with a decent ISP
Internode has nationwide access and a flatrate plan with a dynamic QoS system that works rather sweetly. I clocked 45GB down in my first month on that. If RedHat tops that out on their next release, I'll eat my modem.

Not true.

Telstra (Australia's telco monopolist) sells plans like this, but Telstra are required by law to allow other ISPs to access their infrastructure. These other ISPs have some much better plans, ranging from a 16GB + Shaping afterwards to a Unlimited download with QoS prioritising when pipe is under heavy load. Both these ISPs offer unmetered upload.

So large file sharing is very much alive and well in Australia. (The iiNet plan also allows unlimited P2P traffic within your own state, I believe)

I am in Australia where the cost of broadband connections is usually far higher than the US. I run a couple of websites using 512 SDSL with 5 static IPs for AUD$160 per month. The service is through Internode and has been very reliable.

Mark is modestly neglecting to mention that the company he works for is at the forefront of the fight to get a better deal from Tel$tra, and is one of the good guys. Internode (the company in question) do provide adsl, but like everyone else, they have to rent their bandwidth from Tel$tra, who charges them stupidly high prices to discourage competition. Yes, this is illegal, and the local Competion watchdog have taken Tel$tra to task for this. Unfortunately, this hasn't really changed things much.

(Unabashed praise from satisfied user follows...) Unlike a lot of ISPs, Internode has a high percentage of geeks at most levels of their infrastructure, and do their best to provide for all users, not just the average (how many other ISPs do you know that have a FreeBSD section on their support pages?). The management of Internode also are quick to respond to online concerns - f'rinstance, there was a concern raised over their adsl Terms of Use a while back on an Australian tech site. Internode's manager responded personally, and the offending section was revised within hours of the initial news posting.

When I eventually decide I really do need adsl, I know who I'll be going through...

In the US, T1's are used by businesses; In Australia, most businesses use ISDN (yes, 128kbits/sec), or if they need a "fast" connection they'll usually pick one of the Telstra "DDS Fastway" offerings (leased-lines provided as a managed end-to-end data service at committed datarates between 64kbps and 2 Mbps). There's an increasing amount of ADSL used for business connections too.

In the wholesale marketplace, ISPs have tended to use Telstra Megalink for 2 Mbps services (basically E1 on G.703), but that's increasingly being replaced by 100 Mbps Ethernet as next-generation carriers lay more fibre around the place.

Yes, you'd be right in thinking that all these connectivity options are very Telstra-centric. They're the monopology carrier in our, ahem, "competitive" telecommunications marketplace. It sucks, but it's one of the industry conditions which we just have to cope with, and it's one of the single largest reasons for the high cents/Mbyte figure you see quoted by retail ISPs in Australia. Just to give you some starting points, a Telstra Megalink in the 6km distance band costs $3000 to install and $800 per month to run. 64k on ISDN costs about $400 per month (if you've told Telstra which number you'll be dialling in advance - if you dial any other number, it's about $1800 per month in the local call charging band).

The thing that always chokes me up about these sorts of conversations is that the people who have strong ideas about how much it "should" cost don't actually know what they're talking about.

Just a hint: Anyone who is even remotely interested in thinking about how much bandwidth in Australia "should" cost really needs to understand that there is no such thing as a T-1 in Australia. Trying to make judgements without that kind of basic knowledge is a bit like making judgements about how much cars "should" cost without knowing that they're made out of steel.

If the deficiencies in your knowledge are really that basic, you just aren't qualified to comment about how much it "should" cost. A fundamental understanding of the market conditions in Australia is required before you can put yourself into the position of making authorative statements about costs.

What you are really doing is taking a US-centric view of the Internet, and applying it to other parts of the world -- And anyone who lives outside US territory will be able to tell you that that's just nonsense.

The original poster is mistaken: No split happened, and Australia still pays the full cost of connectivity to the rest of the world.

That's not to say that prices haven't come down: They're a mere fraction of what they were before the Southern Cross Cable Consortium finished laying their cable. But the cost of wholesale bandwidth here is still 3 - 5 times the cost of the same amount of bandwidth in the US, because nobody in the US pays anything to see the rest of the world, whereas the whole world pays the full cost of getting to the US.

Or, putting it another way, consumers in 6 continents are subsidizing Internet access charges for the residents of North America.

A simple "Thank you" will suffice :-)
