Re:LOL
Yup, and that is pretty much the port that is worn out already. The thing that gets me is, I thought durability was one of the selling points of USB-C?? I plug my android phone in every day with micro-usb and it is showing no signs of wear.
That's likely what the connector salesman told Apple, HP, Microsoft. Acer, Lenovo, etc., about USB-C connectors, too.
I DO know that Apple doesn't put cheap-shit connectors in their products (because they don't HAVE to); but, since USB-C is a relatively new standard in the wild, perhaps some unanticipated wearout mechanisms in the overall USB-C connector designs are now coming to light.
If so, that wouldn't be Apple's fault, per se. It would be an industry-wide problem.
There are also common, fairly prosaic, issues, like an accumulation of LINT in the connector (no fooling!) that make it SEEM like a USB-C port is "wearing out", when it isn't:
https://forums.oneplus.net/thr...
Here's another forum poster suggesting a "de-linting" fix:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus...
The Spec. is 10,000 insertion/extraction cycles. So you haven't worn out the Connector:
https://news.ycombinator.com/i...
More than likely, there is lint that is keeping the connector from being fully-inserted, and thus the spring-clip that holds the "plug" into the "jack" isn't able to actuate.

Re:The WhatsApp app (somewhat off-topic)
Another terrible thing is that when you change phones you lose your chat history. Technically there's a backup option to Google drive and SD card but when both fails you search and find it fails for loads of people and no one knows why or how to fix it.
https://forums.oneplus.net/thr...
So Facebook have my chat history but WhatsApp won't let me see it on a new phone. Gee thanks, you utter fuckknuckles.
Back before Facebook owned the company of course it was actually a pretty decent application that effectively let you send free SMSs. Now it's a designed to make sure that FB have your data and you don't.
But as with Facebook Messenger, LINE and Skype you pretty much have to install it to talk to its captive user base. Funny thing is when telephones got to be essential to talk to people the telcos got regulated as common carriers. Of course Facebook and WhatsApp are not going to be regulated as common carriers, but ISPs are. Even though in most places I can switch from DSL to cable or mobile and not lose contact with people, but that's not true if I get rid of Facebook. Facebook bans people for having heretical opinions, and that's apparently fine. And to add insult to injury FB is lobbying heavily for ISPs to be regulated as common carriers and buying up companies like WhatsApp which would otherwise be competition. Brilliant.

Re:SD Slot? Get over it already
How crazy is this thread?
You are both arguing over the merits of a "cloud" solution when the obvious choice is to use a USB cable.
However, MTP has fucking broken the ability to easily copy files to and from a phone. That bullshit needs to die a horrid death.

http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/guides-tips-tricks/34852-how-solve-mtp-issues-all-android-devices.html
...and so on. MTP sucks. To stay on topic: I will **NEVER** spend $1000 on a phone that does not use a generic USB mass storage device driver....yes, that means I won't buy another phone again. Why the fuck does everyone tolerate this bullshit???????????

Re:But 725$ for a Samsung is OK!
Because Samsung and Apple are the only 2 manufacturers, right?

Tell me a phone that doesn't have Facebook pre-installed
Any of the OnePlus phones?

Re:Verizon
Here's the spec sheet, scroll down a bit to Connectivity and you'll find the supported bands. It shouldn't be hard to find out which bands a particular carrier uses.
One good thing about this phone, I think it's the first one that has a single edition instead of localized versions. With the 3, for example, you could pick North America or Europe/Asia, but not a single phone that supports all of those bands. It looks like they finally have a radio that supports all kinds of bands and a single edition of the phone.

Re:One Plus?
No, they run OxygenOS.

Re:Translation:
So, you got pissed that they offer the Nexus 5X for $349, and went to the OnePlus that sells a $399 phone.
It seems you didn't look too critically at that decision.
https://store.google.com/categ...
https://oneplus.net/oneplus-3Also, what idiot would put a 4k display into a 5 inch screen? What is the point? I can't even use my 15.4" 4k display at native resolution, I have to blow up everything by 200% (I think) to even be able to read it, what would be the point of blowing everything up by 600%, you aren't getting better detail at that resolution, it is just like the megapixel wars, pointless.

Re: Fuse
Thing people buys is what sets the standard.
There currently are a couple of brands that not only doesn't prevent rooting or flashing a new OS, but also provides information on how to do so on their homepages/forums.
If you want consumer rights it is a good idea to support those brands.
When I read through the information from HTC about Unlocking Your Bootloader all warnings appears to be pretty reasonable.
One the OnePlus forums you can find this extensive guide on how to root and unlock the bootloader. There are more phones you can pick from that supports power users and doesn't try to protect you from yourself.
Pick one of those because this isn't just limited to rooting your phone but is a symptom of a corporate culture.
It is wise to chose one that doesn't think of you as someone who shouldn't make their own decisions. -
Re:How are they a startup?
Psst! This isn't their third either. Don't forget the OnePlus X.

Re:The cost of privacy and security
This just in: Android and Samsung are not the same thing.
You can find your unlocked flagship Android phone here for less than $350:

Re:Great News
Not completely open but easy enough to install whatever ROM you want. No carrier, and with the right ROM, no Google either. And it is a great phone.

Re:Blackberry.
I'd say the OnePlus One which comes with CyanogenMod already. No extras, no gop, all the good parts of Android without extras, it just works and is less expensive. https://oneplus.net/one
Otherwise, any of the phones that have CyanogenMod available for them, but that requires the user download and click an app along with running windows software to install, so easier to just buy the phone that uses it directly.

Re:Commercially makes sense ... maybe
One PlusOne comes to mind https://oneplus.net/
The reviews I have read say that it's a very good phone, and an amazing phone for the price. It starts at $299 for 16 GB of storage and only $50 more for 64GB of storage. I'm pretty sure this is going to be my next phone.
-
Re:Not always a good thing.
It seems that Cyanogen is focusing on the One Plus One. Seeing as how they now have a paying gig it doesn't surprise me that that is where their focus is.
-
Re:Competition is good
Cyanogen already is the stock OS on a phone. The One Plus One. Your wishes really do come true.

Re: Nobody else seems to want it
Samsung took back my unlocked bootloader because Google wants me to rent movies. They're both evil.
So I went and bought a OnePlus One that came with CyanogenMod already on it and unlocking the bootloader ("fastboot oem unlock") didn't void the warranty.
Fuck you Samsung, fuck you GOOG. I'll give my data and money to the Chinese.
Then I've got my ISP reading my every packet, GCHQ inspecting them. The NSA looking over their shoulders and making comments. The Germans reading their product. And finally the Chinese who have backdoored my hardware more than a cardinal on a choirboy.
But it has a nice big screen and sends texts.

Re:Too good to be true?
Doubtful, according to the FAQ. At least, I'm hoping the warehouses mentioned are, based on the initial countries of availability, in North America, Europe, and Asia.
