Re:Mandriva just did this as well?
I'm not sure you can redistribute it that easily. They had to go through an agreement for the previous release, iirc. Skype is a commercial product, with subscription based services, where drivers are proprietary but arent difficult to distribute, I mean, you're basically doing the vendor's job. So that could be the difference.
In that area too, Mandriva is also trying to promote Free Software solutions, as it entered in partnership with a Free alternative to skype: openwengo. An european ISP has started to develop their IM - VOIP - VIDEO solution and it's Free Software. They shared a booth with Mandriva at the french Linux expo: http://openwengo.com/ -
Re:VoIP
So
... will it support VoIP?
Check out this open source VoIP and video conferencing software http://www.openwengo.com/
WengoPhone 2.1 has instant messaging support, implemented using libgaim, can connect to MSN Messenger, OSCAR protocol based networks such as AIM or ICQ, XMPP based networks such as Google Talk and Jabber, and the Yahoo Messenger networks. -
Re:The real problem with cell phones...Web'n'walk fair use policy
Subject to coverage. Compatible handset required. Provides unlimited browsing on mobile handsets in the UK. Not applicable to connection via CSD. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers a fair use policy applies. T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data (both sent and received) of up to 1GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 1GB of data and ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied. Not to be used for other activities (including but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads, internet phone calls and instant messaging. If such use is detected, notice may be given after which network protection controls may be applied. The application of network protection controls will result in a reduced speed of transmission. It looks like they will give you a warning if they notice you are doing something they think they should make a profit on.
ahem this looks interesting

The domain name server is : voip.wengo.fr
using that directly is liable to get you cut off but would it be difficult to connect via your own network
http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/vpn/pda/docs/ppc2 003.html should give a few clues on connecting a vpn client on a pda to vpn server on your network openswan seems to what you need running on your own network
anyone got anything like this up and running? -

Re:Isn't that the point?Did you ask to yourself why there is no such service? Actually there is: http://openwengo.com/
Wengos application is GPL and it uses SIP as its protocol. Behind it, there's a french phone company I believe which seems to think that this may somehow pay off for them (I don't know much more about their business model though).

there is also ...
another open source client out there that is way better for me. it also based on mozilla
.. yay ! -
Attention!
If you're an OSS project, and you want people to join in, contribute, admire or whatever, please, please, PLEASE, explain WTF you are and what you're doing on the main page of your web site. Don't make people hunt for this information. Otherwise we're likely to infer that you're just another overenthusiastic underorganized OSS group that has nothing interesting going on.

Re:standardize instant messenging
I had a look at OpenWengo http://www.openwengo.com/. It is a nice SIP multiprotocol messenger that can also do SIP. Suports Yahoo! and Jabber, though I thik you can't do Yahoo! voice chat.
Hoping to have standardised IM protocols/clients soon ... -

Maybe OpenWengo ?

Re:Time for ...
Yup. It's called OpenWengo.
:-P -
OpenWengo!
After I learned how evil Skype is, I went searching for an open source alternative. The best alternative I could find is OpenWengo. Anyone else know of anything worth taking a look at?

Re:Gaim support for SIP as well
"We already have kphone (a QT-based phone, but no KDE integration, so no aRts), iaxcomm (IAX protocol only) and linphone (GTK)."
While they are good projects, and I hope that they continue their developments, they are not exactly mainstream:
- kphone/linphone: Setting up SIP accounts is hell for people not familiar with SIP (and behind firewalls/natted).
- iaxcomm: Wonderful, easy to use/setup even behind NAT, but you must first setup your own Asterisk server.
I've seen PR from companies such as Wengo, which offers a GPL QT-based client, but the GNU/Linux client is unstable and the project has poor documentation, too much PR on their website.. They also plan to offer a Firefox extention towards mid-February. Their service offers an easy to setup SIP-proxy (free) and POTS-proxy ($).
Anyway, I'm happy to see that OpenZoep is using XMPP and it looks like a very nice complementary alternative. -

Actually, the best of these apps all of you have mentioned is WengoPhone http://www.openwengo.com/ - qt interface, uses ALSA, have working Linux video capabilities, "and more..." Check it out, it's GPL and very good indeed.

catch up and be open (SIP standard compliant)
VoIP not only needs to catch up but also be open like email, and unlike the divided IM space.
Unfortunately Skype is not the application which connects to an open network.
Only applications like Gizmo http://www.gizmoproject.com/ and many other ones (which I don't use) connect to the International Standard-compliant Protocol known as SIP.
If you want voice chat (VoIP) on Linux then you have a good selection too (I don't know which are SIP compliant and which are not though):

Free software VoIP
Luckily there's also one free software "skype-like" VoIP in development - http://www.openwengo.com/ (GPL). For video features, there's always GnomeMeeting, though it's more for businesses than for the average Joe because there's no centralized "address book" except for Seconix. And Gaim 2.0 should support Google Talk protocol, together with some webcam support for various protocols.

Open Source Alternative for Skype

IM for linux, VoIP for linux
In addition to the number of good IM clients for Linux (especially GAIM), if you want voice chat (VoIP) on Linux then you have a good selection too: PhoneGaim : http://www.phonegaim.com/ ( http://cockatoo.mozdev.org/ ( http://www.gizmoproject.com/ ( http://www.linphone.org/ KPhone : http://www.wirlab.net/kphone/ Skype : http://www.skype.com/ ( http://www.minisip.org/ SFLphone : http://www.sflphone.org/ SIPfoundry : http://www.sipfoundry.org/ Twinkle : http://www.twinklephone.com/ openwengo : http://www.openwengo.com/ Yate : http://yate.null.ro/ shtoom : http://www.divmod.org/projects/shtoom Best to get one that connects via 'SIP' and is entirely standard-compliant, then you can connect to anyone on other standard networks (except those in closed networks like Skype(???)).
