Pffft. If the clothing was smart
If the clothing made from this fabric was smart enough, it would eventually figure out that the best way to get rid of the 'dirt' problem is to eliminate the one, who is wearing the clothing in question. While the researchers say that these nanocrystals cannot harm the skin, how long before it gains this ability, by say becoming exposed to some levels of X-Rays higher than normal? It wouldn't make long before a movie about the hungry killer suit is released. Also judging from the kind of garbage that get the Oscar nowadays, this new movie is going to get fasttracked in that department as well.

ahhh SCO
demonstrating their amazing abilities to stick their foot in it over and over, all whilst portraying themselves as great enforcers of the american way , and upholders of the capitalistic lifestyle that we all hold so dear. I smell an oscar. Maybe Darl will want to take his newfound fame and fortune to the next level, by becoming a rockstar too.

And the Oscar for the best acceptance speech ...
And the Oscar for the best acceptance speech goes to Michael Moore and Michael Donovan:
Whoa. On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to -- they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much. -
But, LOTR was nominated...

The Cathedral!
I would like to point your attention to one nomination in the animated short category: The Cathedral.
It's a really nice short, loosely based on a story by Jacek Dukaj, directed by a Polish animator, Tomek Baginski. It won the best animated short award at SIGGRAPH 2002.
You probably won't get a chance to see it in a movie theater (it ran for a some time in a few Polish cinemas before Minority Report and Signs), but you can download a trailer here: hi-res Divx (15 MB), low-res Divx (8 MB), low-res MPEG (9 MB).
Here is the author's page about the film (flash required).

Re:In other words
On the Waterfront lost and from that point on the Academy has been living a lie ever since.
Thats a really nice thesis that is let down in only one respect. On The Waterfront won the Best Picture oscar for 1954. -

The Foreign Language Film Category
Why does the Academy persist in having a "Foreign Language Film" category? In the earlier part of this century when filmmaking was almost exclusively being done by Americans (Hollywood), it made sense to honor a film made by "someone else." No longer does this hold. Lord of the Rings was filmed by an international cast in a foreign country. Harry Potter is a UK film by a UK author. This page says that "This is the thirty-second Academy Award nomination (including nine wins) for France." Why do we persist in having a category for films that aren't in English? Is it the subtitles?
Film is able to cross cultural and lingual boundaries. Why must the Academy persist in maintaing the separation of "English" and "Other" on awards night? Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which had numerous nominations in 2001 started the trend of recognizing films as films, regardless of language and cast/crew nationality.
I think the Academy honors "Foreign Language Films" because of these false beliefs:
- Movies won't make a big box office in America if they have subtitles.
- Movies made outside of Hollywood are of inferior quality and marketability.
- Americans are too stupid to understand films which portray a cross-cultural perspective.
- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an American institution.
- Movies won't make a big box office in America if they have subtitles.

They've had a similar policy for a while. This "no net films" isn't a big deal or a new thing; nothing is eligible unless it originates as something shown in a theatre. From last year's Oscar rules:
Films which receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. (This includes broadcast and cable television, as well as home video marketing.)
They're not totally opposed to new technology; it just has to be new motion picture technology. This is like getting upset because they don't give Grammys for MIDI files.

The Matrix Got a nod to :)
The matrix was nominated for Film Editing As well. I doubt it will win, however, people tend to give every award to 'best picture' (Like titanic getting 'best makeup' for the frozen faces at the end, or somthing)
But anyway, it's cool to see the matrix with a nomination :)
Hen hao!
