Re:Maybe I'm more anal-retentive than most
Actually, this article is much ado about virtually nothing.
According to this page there were 35 million passengers through Liberty International Airport in 2014. That's about 3 million / month. 70 laptops in that pile of people is less than a tenth of a percent. Lots less.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Re:In other words ...
What I want to know, is why any state's DOT would take orders like that EVEN if they thought it came from the Governor himself. Most rational state governments do not allow the Governor to micro-manage road and lane closures, for non-emergency reasons, and when there is a real emergency need, the DOT is usually well ahead of the elected officials.
Why does New Jersey allow a governor to make that call?
NY and NJ DOTs have nothing to do with it. The GWB is run by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey which separate from the state governments. The only reason the NJ governor's office was able to pull this off was because of their appointees & other cronies inside the PANYNJ.

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder
The fact that this hadn't been thrown out immediately bewilders me. Personally, I'd like to see this pass, and abused to the fullest extent. It's becoming increasingly apparent that the government is capable of doing whatever it pleases, while the people simply sit back. I mean, first off, the only permissible protest from the people is through a written letter with a deadline. This is something that will directly affect the public, not law officials. And by the way, this is a city that has over 2400 video surveillance cameras, all accessible under "certain" circumstances by those law officials. Seriously, why has it become okay for the government to record/access any type of information, but it's becoming absurd to believe the people have even a fraction of that right without their approval?
I'm sorry, but I'm really getting fed up with the amount of people that almost act as though our rights are not really rights, but instead wonderful (but not necessary) gifts from those in power. I would much rather see the government continue to recklessly widen the gap between themselves and the public until the inevitable day that they've gone too far, and people are willing to give up their comfortable lifestyles to fight for the ideas that founded this country.
To those that believe this is a good thing/okay thing/you don't really care, please, get your head out of the sand. There is entirely too much room for abuse. There is a similar law regarding camera usage in the NY/NJ PATH train stations. I can tell you firsthand that I've been harrassed more than once for simply having a camera in my possession, when the rules pertain only to the act of taking pictures. -
Re:Even more interesting than seeing a Cat
PANYNJ Governance "The Port Authority is a financially self-supporting public agency..."
Having an interstate compact does not mean that the entity is free to infringe on your constitutional rights. That would be quite a loophole. -
A monorail that works
AirTrain. G.A.P (2/3) 6 minutes to Atlantic Terminal (2 bucks). LIRR to Jamaica Station 19 minutes (3.50). AirTrain monorail to Terminal 10 minutes ( 5 bucks). $10.50. 35-40 minutes. Comparison: Town Car to JFK from Prospect Heights ($35 - $40) with no guarantee that it will be anything less than 35 minutes.
The monorail is a good idea for custom destinations like an airport where you have to build above ground level to connect to other public trans. Any other use seems to be nothing more that gee-whiz novelty stuff. -
Re:Vancouver had an automated train since 1986.Big friggin' whoop. The JFK Airtrain is fully automated and runs via linear induction motors. The 42nd St. Shuttle experimented with automated trains all the way back in 1962... 24 years before your precious Vancouver train.
I, for one, welcome our northern neighbors' ignorant statement and incorrect feeling of superiority, eh?

Re:I can see 20 access points...
I'm not sure what your point is, but wasn't the WTC owned by PANYNJ?
Yes, it was. The panynj.gov is the government, and leasing office space for life insurance companies is the kind of real estate business thats supposed to be the exclusive domain of private-sector capitalists like Donald Trump.
The NYC WTC was a violation (or counterexample) of a suggested principle that a city shouldn't be able to go into business.
PS. Maybe you don't know that the PANYNJ is government... don't be fooled just because they no longer collect taxes from non-users... -
Re:Switchablethat's a good point. i was also just reminded of the automatic train that runs underneath atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport (ATL). This train has been in service for more than a decade (the linked page refers to an upgrade project completed in 2000), and it has Just Worked for as long as i can remember it. so maybe it's not about the automation at all, but more about the general information-friendliness of the system.
but i will note that the train in ATL has an even more constrained environment than the AirTrain: it is underground, and its tracks are basically a single straight line, whereas the AirTrain has a much weirder layout.
-
Re:Switchable
I'd imagine that the first fully automated cars will be airport shuttles and similar vehicles which make a repeated circuit of stops.
let's be realistic here and look at real-life automated transport. Here in New York, they've recently made the AirTrain a completely automated train that goes to the airport (JFK) from the nearest subway station.anyone who has used the AirTrain will tell you that the system is a huge step backwards from the human-driven buses which used the local roads. The AirTrain has no drivers to ask questions of, is poorly documented, and occasionally stops in between stations with no information to any of the passengers about what's going on.
also, when it reaches a station, it leaves the doors open for either much longer than it needs to (when no one is waiting on the platform to come in, or on the train to go out), or it closes them too quickly (yes, closing doors on people's luggage or their arms!). Human conductors of the subway are much more efficient with these sort of things.
it was even delayed for several months when it killed a person during a test run!
Now stop and consider the constraints on the system that the AirTrain deals with: no other traffic at all, no pedestrians/animals on the tracks, no intersections to speak of, and an extremely simple, well-maintained route. And it still sucks. An autonomous car would need to deal with a much more unconstrained system (potholes, construction, children, broken traffic lights, aggressive drivers...). We should all be hoping that these sort of vehicles aren't unleashed on our public streets soon.

Re:Insert Joisey-joke here.
"Yeah, well don't be so sure. Others have tried and failed... The entire population, in fact."
Sam Jackson's a little bit off. The NJ/NY Port Authority makes tons of money off those desperate to leave New Jersey. I really hope Rhode Island and New Hampshire don't decide to follow suit and proceed to gangbang Massholes like me who will be fleeing Big Dig-related taxes in a few years. -
Re:Seems like a bad ideathink about the holy hell that would get raised if you decided to charge a fee of $2500 a year to drive to Manhattan Island!
Guess What? The Port Authority of New York And New Jersey charges, get this-- Tolls!. I know, I couldn't believe it either, but apparently, if you want to enter Manhattan, you'll have to pay a toll of $5. What the bridge trolls charge That's $1300 a year. BTW, at the current exchange rate of £1=1.56, £1300 is only worth $2024. Foreign Exchange Rates

Re:American Maglev
I know of one maglev system in public use in the US, and that is the automated and unmanned Airtrain rail used at the Newark International Airport in New Jersey to connect all the terminals to parking lots. Although it doesn't reach very high speeds, it's a really cool technological design (especially the U-turn points at the ends of the track!)

Not the cost of being competitive
Well, this was the World Trade Center. They had to cut all costs, including maintenance, to please investors.
My what a jaded li'l bastard you are.Pity that:
- The WTC was a public building only "sold" a few months prior to the attack. It was built and owned by the Port Authority of NY & NJ.
- There are likely no other buildings in the world (possibly excepting the Great Pyramid) that could have held up as well/as long to the assault as the WTC did.

Port Authority statements, very New YorkThe Port Authority, which owns the World Trade Center, the Port of New York, and many of the bridges and tunnels, has been issuing statements. Unlike everybody else's press releases, they're very straighforward. There was a brief expression of regret, followed by a series of reports of services being restored. The PATH trains to New Jersey were running by 5:30 PM, somehow rerouted around the WTC station. That's an achievement.
I'll bet the rubble is cleared out within a month, and new construction starts next spring. Bigger.

Another Facility:Teleport Complex in Staten Island
This place isn't that out of the ordinary. A number of years back an unnamed government agency turned over pieces of a facility on staten island to the NY Port Authority. The facility contained several nuke proof datacenters, and a very strange, large building with no ceiling. More or less something that was to look from the road to be part of the complex, but was merely a facade. Oddly enough, this building had an antenna farm in it, which included fast tracking dishes of more than 18' . Strange thing to have in the downlink scatter zone of the city of Manhattan, don't you think? When you consider that all the buildings have their own redundant systems to run power, and cooling (including CPU chilling for older mainframes) for durations greater than a week the site gets interesting....
official information can be seen here:
http://www.panynj.gov/economic_development/commain .HTM
Anyone know anything else about the Teleport complex? -
