Re:Automation and unemployment
"Ya know, that's what a lot of people say... Until they own an Apple product."
I wonder how of those people feel that way because they believe that the higher cost means it must be the best product they could have purchased. There's no lack of suckers out there that fall for this or there wouldn't be products like Pear audio cables or even Monster Cable's horribly overpriced products. I have to agree with the GP's comment about it being mostly about the cachet of owning an iProduct.

Re:Hell, that's nothing!
3 foot pair - $2750
8 foot pair - $5250
12 foot pair - $7250 -
Re:Practical applications/implications of this?
Well, an extremely-low jitter audio signal finally worthy of transfer over your Pear Anjou cables comes to mind right away.

Re:Where's the LOL WUT picture when I need it?
I have this wooden knob and some http://www.pearcable.com/sub_cable_design.htm cables that I am willing to sell you.

Re:Audiophiles don't listen to music.
Having good equipment set up well in a good room isn't silly, but paying thousands of dollars for a speaker cable and a few hundred more for a CD/DVD demagnetizer) is.
There are two definitions for audiophile. You seem to be using the "someone who loves good audio" definition. The person you're replying to is using the "someone who spends ridiculous amounts of money on things that claim to work in ways that would break the laws of physics" definition.

Pear Anjou
No - this does.

Cables are a scam
There are so few things affect the quantify the quality of a cable. Not the least is the current, frequency, and voltage of the signal. Too high a current? You need more metal. Too high a voltage? You need better insulators. Too high a frequency? Then you need noise immunity and impedance matching with coax or twisted pair. Yes, I know this is an over simplification, but a little bit of research will show how nonsensical the high quality cable claims are.
This is my favourite audiophool scam:
"Simply put these are very danceable cables. "http://www.pearcable.com/sub_products_anjou_sc.htm
Why can't we prosecute these criminals for fraud?

Re:Useful for audiophile pirates, though
Pah. Poser. Cretin.
You want these puppies. -
My favorite audiophile shopping sites
Just for the shock value that they exist and that someone is paying these prices.
Audioquest: 8 feet of speaker cable for $8,450
Pear Cable: 12 feet for $7,250
A voltage stabilizer for $11,500 (what is that?)
A turntable cartridge for $20,000
And here's the winner: 8 ft of speaker cable for $39,999
You can't make this stuff up

Re:the audiophile world
That's OK. There is still time to waste your money. But hurry.
-
Re:Eye of the Beholder
I'll bet you don't use these cables on your stereo.
And you probably aren't much fun at parties. -
Re:How much is your time worth
Here's a better link.

Re:Article text
Apple also told me that the rubber grommets that hold the drive to the ADM carrier are chosen specifically to match each drive's vibrational characteristics. Different drives use different types of rubber in an attempt to reduce vibration as much as possible.
Think maybe these guys can whip up some special cables for the Xserves? It might have helped TidBITS stay up.
-
Re:Seriously...
I'd whip you with my Pear Anjou cables, but I've just finished burning them in and aligning the natural resonance using my interocitor.
-
Re:Monster cable has been taking advantage...
I'll see your $5900 data cable, and raise you a $7250 pair of 12 foot speaker cables. http://www.pearcable.com/sub_products_anjou_sc.htm How do these people sleep at night.

Barely compares to Pear Audio
Think Monster is expensive?

Re:Get a pen
Bah, 1,793$ power cords are for chumps. This 12', 7,250$ speaker cable pair is what you really need

Re:Calling all OiNK ex-admins!
It was indeed...release a 320 bit rate MP3, and it still would technically be considered degraded...not to mention it would be more or less indistinguishable between it a loseless file...unless you are a stuck up audiophile that also believes a multi-thousand dollar cable makes a difference)

Re:What dialogue?
Yeah, disproven. There is no God. Religion is full of shit.
Great! Where's your counter-argument? If it's so thoroughly "disproven", this should be easy...
See, the problem is that there is no one definition of God. There are plenty I can disprove out of hand as internally inconsistent, but most people do not have a clearly defined God that they believe in.
Life is itself a problem-solving system, you'd think that we'd have abandoned a tool that's become as useless as religion, using Science instead!
You must be very lonely.
Science absolutely does not solve everything.
Of course, having fun and falling in love don't require religion, or any particular belief.
"Teaches us great MORALS..."
... just like Lot and his daughters. Or Noah who expels one of his sons who's seen him drunk. Two of the most evident...That's all you've got?
Just look up the Laws, in particular what it says about rape. I'll admit there are a lot of morons out there who claim to believe the entire Bible, yet obviously have not read it.
Or Allah uh-akbar, let's go kill them all, God's with us, Blut und Ehre, and shit. Religion includes memes of the sort that gets the warriors jumping up and down, screaming "KILL! KILL!", when resources go down and people need to die to make room in the ecological niche.
You know, the Koran goes on for pages and pages about how merciful Allah is. Jesus says "love your neighbor as yourself". At a certain point, it is hard to say whether the Jihadist or the pacifist is a perversion of their religion, but both are founded in Scripture.
There are some religious people who do horrible things because of their religion -- the Crusades, terrorism, etc. And there are some good people who do good things because of their religion -- Martin Luther King, Gandhi, etc. And there are atheists who do horrible things anyway -- Stalin, China, etc.
All of which makes it very hard to argue for or against religion based on what the religious do.
Add to the above the fact that religion is generally useful to control people and that explains why we haven't waked up yet.
Science can control people just as easily.
You could say that's bad science, sure. And I can say that anyone using God to tell other people what to do is practicing bad religion. The only difference is that science is defined clearly enough that your claim is actually true.
So, creation of the world - check. The origin of war and the link to religion - check.
Haven't seen either of those. There's your possibly-accurate description of the origin of war, but no mention of how that's at all relevant to religion.
Now, as to why there should be dialog with religious figures?
Because as long as the scientists don't put an asshat like you up there, we should be able to show, calmly and rationally, why science deserves to be taken seriously, and why the Pope does not (if, indeed, he does not).

Re:Overpriced audiophile items
Then this should make you laugh: http://www.pearcable.com/sub_products_anjou_sc.htm
Several thousand dollar speaker cables... -
Re:Who cares? It's all about the speaker cables
Those cables aren't good enough. You would definitely want to use these for your $60 speakers:

I do not hesitate to listen to my cables!
From http://www.pearcable.com/sub_faq.htm#8
8. Do I need to "Break-In" my cables?
You may listen to your cables directly out of the box and get most of the performance immediately. However, it will take approximately 1 day for the cables to mechanically settle after they have been moved or set up for the first time, which can have an effect on the sound. Some users do report a need for our cables to "break in" over time to achieve the optimum performance. Customers must make their own decision as to how long is necessary to "break in" the cables, but do not hesitate to listen to them immediately. -
Re:All the things true Audiophile needs....
"Made in the U.S.A. for superior quality" What does that mean? Does that mean anything coming from anywhere but the USA is poor quality? That's like saying because XYZ is made somewhere in Taiwan it must be much worse than the same thing made in the US of A? Personally, those cables look like a piece of copper with some cotton and fancy named materials mixed into a blender, then stuffed into a plastic tube.
