Test a company's credibility online:Test a company's credibility online by doing a Google search for an overused word or phrase. Limit the search to the company's web site using the "site:" prefix. For example, try the word "solution", as in "We don't sell products, we sell solutions." At the time I did the test, Google showed 640 hits for the word "solution" on the QWest Communications web site.
Here are the first 25 hits on 08/02/2005, when I wrote this story:
- Whole House Digital Solution
- Uniform Access Solution (UAS)
- premises-based solution
- network-based solution
- Solution Providers
- Internet Port solution
- VoIP solution
- long-term solution, software solution
- Comprehensive Voice Solution
- hosted solution
- complete on-line trading solution
- VoIP solution set
- Web-Based Contact Center Solution
- Troubleshooting Guide Problem Solution
- Repeated: network-based solution
- national voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) solution
- iQ Networking solution, security solution
- preset solution
- e-Solution
- complex integrated ASP solution
- carrier-grade solution
- Repeated: Internet Port solution
- Business Solution
- Government Technology Solution, Centrex PRIME solution
- Qwest solution
This is not a complaint about QWest, which seems to have good telephone and DSL service. But their marketing language may need reconsideration.
If you need a list of over-used terms, visit the Bullsh**t Bingo web site. There's a Bulls**t Bingo movie, too. I think they should do a re-make of the movie in which, once Bingo is reached, the speaker is required to leave the room immediately. (Remember to put quote marks around phrases. We respect the ownership of any trademarks on the list.) -
Re:Better luck next time
You can always check out the Dogbert Buzzword Generator

And, as always, Bullshit Bingo! You can grab a few choice terms from there, too

Re:Tell them your reasons
I think the inverse of Dogbert's Buzzword Generator must be Bullshit Bingo.

There is a way to actually have fun with these nonsense terms:

I tried this myself in business seminars, definitly works! It's better to have humorous people around, though. -
Re:Danger Will Robinson, Danger!
BULLSHIT!
Oh. Sorry. I just got back from a meeting where we were playing Bullshit Bingo the whole time.
My sincere apologies. -

BULLSHIT!! -
Re:Difficulty of change
Voice input might be it, once it's faster and all of the bugs are ironed out.
Leaving aside how bloody noisy, I suggest you ask someone (such as a teacher or actor) just how hard it is to speak clearly for several hours a day. It may get rid of carpal tunnel syndrome, only to to replace it with some other ailment - viavoice voicebox, perhaps?
And faster? I doubt it could ever go faster than people can speak. By people I mean people who aren't horse racing commentators.Offer a truly revolutionary interface paradigm

Re:#1 will be...Well, there's always the dot-com-inspired "Bullshit Bingo".
Print up your card from here
For those who don't get it:
Bullshit Bingo!
I'd include a sample card except I getDo you keep falling asleep in meetings and seminars? What about those long and boring conference calls? Here is a way to change all of that!
How to play:
Before each meeting, visit http://www.perkigoth.com/home/kermit/stuff/bullsh
i tbingo/ and print one copy of this game card for each player, refreshing the page before each print, or have the players print their own game cards.Check off each block when you hear these words during a meeting, seminar, or phone call. When you get five blocks horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, stand up and shout BULLSHIT!!
Lameness filter encountered. Post aborted!
Reason: Please use fewer 'junk' characters. -

Grammar prob is minor next to "corporatespeak"Bad grammar doesn't bug me compared to bad writing such as this from MS's website:
At a minimum, your Enterprise Resource Planning solution should help you streamline operations, automate processes that should be automated, and give you increased management visibility with an easy-to-use, flexible, agile solution.
They actually can see that their attempt to sound smart and helpful is neither. They are not being sincere. By writing that drivel anyway, they may be showing several things. One is contempt for the rest of us-- do they really think we can't see through those words? Another is that maybe the product is so bad they couldn't think of anything better to say.
It is very tiresome sifting through constant attempts to hype, baffle, conceal, mislead, shift blame, and lie that try to seem smart, friendly and helpful. Most people can construct acceptable sentences. Some don't grasp why they shouldn't abuse communication. The Byzantine Empire didn't fall because the citizens couldn't master Greek.
Next meeting, play Bullshit Bingo.

More of a strategic planning process....
"What's really needed is more of a strategic planning process that involves business executives and technologists," Spinelli said. Instead, security managers all too often offer "nothing by way of a long-term strategy" for IT security.
In just the first two paragraphs alone I was able to fill up my BULLSH*T BINGO card. Let's see if I can write a useless statements containing lots of buzzwords. What's really needed is a short term strategy with long term synergestic goals that transcend all layers of the organization and implement proactive world-class security. Yep, I still got it.
Just think, if executives had more of a strageic planning process for the business in general, then US companies might be healthier and stronger, instead of sacrificing the future for short-term profits.
I guess it is just a slooooow news day. -
Re:Human-Centered Computing!
caused a big paradigm shift

Re:Loaded with cliche's
I cannot tell you how much businessspeak and cliche's I heard. Reading this post was like a flashback with phrases like "Partnering for Success" and "cost center" and "consequence based thinking". I can't tell you how sick I get from hearing folks spout off tripe like "world class" etc...
I know what you mean, that's why I try to always keep one of these around. -
