Re:translationUm, that's actually a totally false "translation." In fact, it's pretty close to the opposite of what I said. If you don't like any of Apple's products just because they are Apple

Re:typical /. troll formYou're whining because you're inately jealous of what Apple's been able to do with Free code they've used in their products or based their products off of.
Why would I be jealous of such a thing, considering I have an ibook?. I guess my mother's allowance must be pretty good to fund my home/office. I'm glad apple is making use of OSS, thats what it is there for, my original post was simply stating that Apple has not released anything that makes OSX interesting or desirable to non-mac users. I was never even hinting that Apple should or must release anything. I was simply stating that for all the Open Source talk that has been Spewed out by Apple's PR machine, they haven't delivered.
Not everyone can make money selling advertisements on their website, ergo they need to sell software or even hardware.
When the fuck did I ever mention advertisements or business models. Bottom line, Apple should pay up or shut up when it comes to their OSS PR.

Re:I own both books does that make me a threat? That's exactly my point; I've never read either one, but it's only because curiosity has never reached "critical mass" to push procrastination out of the way.
If I had actually purchased a copy of either book, I would still be the same person I am today: a law-abiding geek with a "live-and-let-live" mentality regarding most anything.
A corallary to my original question could be stated, "is simple, innocent curiosity adequate grounds for my private financial information being freely granted to anyone with the spare time to ask for it?"
Incidentally, those titles were simply the first two examples that popped into my head. "The Satanic Verses" and "Ten Ways I Can Prove Smashing Pumpkins is The Crappiest Band Since The Offspring" are two titles that are also sure to earn me more fan points with other slashdotters.
By the way, http://www.phataudio.org/ looks interesting. Slash me investigates more...

out of contextAs a programmer working on some P2P related tech at PSU, I can tell you that this quote was taken out of context. The president was just making some comments at a session, this by no means in the works. A fews months ago there was a public forum at Penn State about P2P. The EFF and the RIAA were there, which BTW an RIAA lawyer is on the board of trustees in case you wonder why Penn State always works closely with the recording industry. At the P2P forum the EFF lawyer was great up to the point where he suggested a broadband tax to pay record companies and then P2P would be legal but subsidized by millions of non file sharing broadband users. I believe Spanier was inspired by this and was just putting the idea out on the table on a university level.
Administrators and the EFF should take note that subsidies for the recording industry will not work for a variety of reasons, here is a short list:
- Millions of non-p2p users would be paying for music they never downloaded
- There would be no fair way to distribute the royalties among artists
- In the case of the government broadband tax, the recording companies with the most pull in DC will get the better deal while the small shops will be get screwed
- Any subsidy plan would be keeping the existing obsolete recording industry business model alive
- The artists will continue to get screwed, while the record companies will maintain their bloated margins.
- Students already pay enough unnecessary funds in their Penn State bill in order to subsidize activities they don't use and building projects that are completely unnecessary. Take a drive around Penn State and you will see multiple huge construction projects for unnecessary buildings.

Re:may have a chance
I mean it, here is is some info. It is by no means a definitive analysis, you really need listening tests, but it gives a sense of a quality loss.

Another solution forIf you want to listen to internet radio on your stereo, then what you need is (AudioTron) from TurtleBeach.
Here a Tom's Hardware Guide to Music Across Your Home Network
. Here are some reviews of the AudioTron Phataudio, DesignTechnica, Cnet and WhiningdogDesignTechnica gives it a 9/10.
Congrats on you new home. -
Re:Cons ProsOn a side note, Fujitsu [fujitsu.com] makes a killer laptop [fujitsupc.com]! I've seen it in action...perhaps one of the best laptops for its size...
As an owner of the latest p-2k I have nothing but praise for the p-2000 series. Integrated wireless, DVD/CDR, firewire, and a host of other features packed in to 3.5 pound form factor. The battery life is amazing especially with the little extended main battery I can get 6 hours. Here is a little review I wrote ahwile back,

not reallyThe powerbook keyboard is better than average, but is not phenomenal by any means. As the owner of a subcompact Fujitsu P-2000 and a Powerbook G4, I actually prefer the Fujitsu keyboard and I'm a keyboard snob, I only use IBM model M's or sun type 6 on the desktop.
I can't believe the parent Mac fanboy post got modded up. How the hell is the powerbook keyboard sexy? Seriously, some of you guys need to stop masturbating to switch ads.

Re:Desperate for silent machinesApple do take this stuff seriously.
I beg to differ, when my tiBook fan kicks in it is by far the loudest fan in the room.

more expensive, but worth it
I've had an ATC 101 for over a year now. Coolermaster cases are very expensive, but the quality and performance is unbeatable. My ATC 101 runs at 30C with 100% CPU utilization sustained in a 78 degree room. No crazy mod either, just a standard ATC 101 case, with a standard coolermaster heatsink, and 2 superdrive coolers in the front. Here is a screenshot.

Wow!As someone who has listened to and taped phish over the years, this is fantastic news. Phataudio.org was orginally a jamband MP3 site way back in the day before bandwidth costs got too high and P2P came out.
Other artists should take note that all Phish did was listen to the needs of their community! The Shn format is not very popular, but amongst the taping community it is thanks to etree.org. It will be very interesting to see how this service affects their live taping policy. Phish's live taping policy is much more restrictive than most because they do not offer soundboard patches. Tapers are forced to use expensive mic and preamp rigs ($5000+) if they want to get anything close to soundboard sound. Live concert taping with microphones is part art, part science, and there are quite a few people who take it way too seriously. The other major restriction of the Phish taping policy is once they release an album of a concert, that concert cannot be distributed online. I would imagine this service will not qualify as an "album."
The next big step for this service will be the distribution of the Phish archives, Phish has recorded every concert from about 1990 on, possibly even earlier. Most of the recordings are multitrack DAT with audience mics to capture the crowd sounds. I would imagine the Grateful Dead will seek to duplicate this model if it is successful. A few years from now we might have every Grateful Dead and Phish show online, remastered SBD recordings. Today is a happy day for jamband fans. A little message to the authors of the "Phish sucks" posts, stick to Creed.

Where is the "thin client" revolution?Personally, I love my Trasmeta powered Fujitsu p-2000 lifebook. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but it packs DVD/CD Burner with firewire, usb, and everything else you would expect in one of those gigantic Inspirons, but is neatly placed in a 3.5 lb package with a small footprint. I wrote a little review here.
That being said, the idea that the "tablet revolution" is long overdue is complete BS. I haven't seen so much hype in at least five years when by now we were all suppose to be using thin client java terminals, and all content would use "push technology." Tablets are going to be great for specialized industrial applications but they are not going to replace laptops. People who think otherwise are the same people who think the Segway will be replacing the bicycle in five years.

Fujitsu p-2000
I currently own 2 laptops a 500mhz ti-Book and the Fujitsu p-2000, I actually prefer the p-2000. The main problem with the ti-book is it is too big. The size makes sense if its the only computer you own, but for people with a desktop and a laptop, it doesn't make much sense to go with such a large laptop. And as far as looks go, the p-2000 is just as good looking as the ti-book. Besides screen size, the p-2000 has every port and feature of the most recent high end Tibook, minus gig-e and of course the big advantage osx. But to pick up a tibook with a decent configuration, you will pay at least $3000+ while a fully loaded 3.5lb p-2000 will run you $1800. Luckily I got a free Tibook to play with from work.

21in CRTs
I was in the market for a larger flatscreen since my 4 year old Hitach superscan elite CRT was showing its age. After looking around, there was no way I was going to pay $2000 for a 21in LCD when good 21in CRT's are available on ebay for less than $300. I ended up purchasing a Sony CDP-G520P at NewEgg. Its flat. its 21in, and its silver so it will match everything else since silver seems to be dominate color these days. Whenever someone walks in to my room the first thing the comment on is the monitor. Stick with CRT unlesss you can deal with a 15in LCD.

Fujitsu p-2000I was in the market for an ultra-portable and I decided to go with the Fujitsu P-2000 over the sony picturebook. First of all, everything on the p-2000 is integrated in to the laptop at only 3.5 pounds it includes:
- DVD/CDR Comno
- Built in wireless
- Ethernet
- USB
- Firewire
- VGA out
- Svideo
The sony looked real promising, but to use ethernet you need to attach a separate connector. I had no interest in attaching a box every time I want to hook up to a network so I went with the p-2000. You can check out my little review here.
I'm amazed the p-2000 doesn't get more press, it packs everything I need in to small package without using any external gadgets.

audiotron and slimp3There are quite a few network mp3 players out on the market. I currently use a turtle beach Audiotron, you can check out a little review I wrote up a few months ago.
The other one that has received quite a bit of press around here is the Slimp3 player. The slimp3 is a nice player, especially if you want something that you can hack, since the source code and architecture is all open.
If you want to make any wired network player wireless, there are products available.

Linux Naming FAQ
Obivously the poster didn't read this.

What's the advantage?
I can understand the advantage of dual displays for graphics tasks but what is the advantage of having dual displays for programming? Can't you just use virtual desktops and have a big monitor? My monitor, the sony in the middle runs at 1600x1200. What would be the advantage of running 2 displays at 800x600 over running one big monitor at 1600x1200?

Not TrueNone of the Windows laptops cut it with battery life or displays so I looked at the iBook.
First of all there is no such thing as a "windows laptop", because X86 can run a variety of operating systems. My PC laptop is a Fujitsu P-2000 and I currently get 7 hours of battery life running Linux on the extended battery. If I take out my media drive and but in the secondary battery I can get 14 hours of battery life.
The brand new powerbook G4 I got from work is lucky if it sees 4 hours.

my reviewsI received the current top of the line powerbook to do some testing for work. I wrote a little review about it. Its pretty darn fast but for the price of my conifguration, I could buy a 3.5 pound Fujitsu P-2000 and build a top of the line Athlon system with 21in CRT.
So if you really want to go for OSX on a laptop you will probably want to go with an ibook unless you don't find spending the extra money painful. Personally, I will be sticking with my p-2000. It has a full size keyboard, DVD, CD-Burner, Built in Wireless, Firewire and 2 USB all integrated in to a 3.5 pound package.

The UniversityIf your wife is a PhD candidate, then you are obviously living close to a college. The best place to look for a flexible job is at the university. You may go the traditional route of applying to posted positions, but I would recommend a different approach. Probably the best way to get a job, would be to become more socially active with people who may need new hires. Many people who post jobs have already made their mind on an internal candidate so that's why its important to find out about these openings before they are posted. As far as telecommuting goes, Universities tend to be very flexible as long as your work allows you to be productive without face2face contact. As a programmer working on a project with 2 other people, I don't need to be in the office that much so I'm allowed to telecommute 3 days a week.
One word of warning, make sure you have decent home office to work in, a few years ago OCSA passed some crazy regulations in regards to telecommuting, so most HR departments are really paranoid about a telecommuters workplace. I know my setup is going to be inspected next month by some guy to make sure the it is ergonomically correct, which is completely ridiculous. Basically they will justify their existence by telling me to get keyboard trays even though my keyboard is already at a good height. Way to go OCSA, keeping me safe from the dangerous height of my model-m keyboard! They will probably furnish me with an MS keyboard that I will immediately throw in the closet.

Network Players for the HomeI've seen quite a few of these devices with storage built in, but for the home you just can't beat a device that plays off of network drives. The fact is most of the music enthusiasts who would be willing to take the plunge on a home MP3 device already have some type of home network set up. There is no advantage to having media files stored locally on the device, its only redundant.
There are 3 network players that I know of, one which has been highly publicized on
/. is the SliMP3. The other device, which has been around for quite some time is the Turtle Beach Audiotron. There is also one made by RIO.I recently bought a network player after a few weeks of wrangling I decided to go with the Audiotron since I already had samba set up and I wanted and SPDIF connection which the Slimp3 does not offer. Anyway, you can check out my review.

Re:EFF Membership
Go work at McDonald's for a day, quit, and then send your paycheck to the EFF
Didn't notice that one on your resume.
Horse pucky! This argument exemplifies the sorry state of political awareness in Western democracies. Money does not talk. People talk. I for one am extremely reluctant to contribute to organizations that do nothing but talk to politicians on my behalf. When I have something to say to a politician, I say it. And usually I get a reply, sometimes even a personal reply. And most importantly, I vote. That is the most direct expression of political will available to a citizen of a representitive government, and politicians do listen to that (that whole Florida vote count fiasco notwithstanding).
If you ever needed to work for a company as odious as McDonald's, perhaps you would understand the value of money, and why it shouldn't be tossed around willynilly in lieu of saying something meaningful. -
