Re:Need Identifying MarkerOften, the TV Guide won't even help.
Early one morning, I saw a show listed on TV Guide Channel as "Automobile Stunt Driving" or some such. Enticing! I flipped to the channel.
Some guys in racing outfits were talking about stunt driving, maintaining control of your vehicle, as they walked over to a large truck, a closed car-carrier. They approached the back, as they promised to demonstrate some serious stunt driving. Awesome! They opened the truck...and every car inside was a Pontiac. OK, let's where they're going with this...
They began to unload a Grand Prix. One of the "professional drivers" said,
"Boy...would you look at the back of that car? I have never seen such a sexy design."
At that moment, I knew I was being played. No one, NO ONE, has ever called the Grand Prix sexy without being paid to do so. Especially not the rear of it.Um..so the point is, you can't depend on the TV guide either. They pitch lots of infomercials as actual shows.

The G6 has already been designed.
Hell, Oprah gave some away as well.

Re:Didn't this happen?
I am pretty sure the Aztecwere defeated by Cortez and an Alliance with other native peoples. The Azteks, however, were defeated due to bad aesthetic design and poor market research.

Pontiac
I think I'll stick with my Pontiac Sun Fire for now.

Re:In other news, GM coming out with 2006 models
Not only that, but apparently GM is way ahead of Apple regarding processors.
Introducing the G6
Wonder if they can fit that in a laptop. -

Well, they had it first.

Re:Bring a whole new meaning to..
I thought the ugliest title went to the pontiac aztek.
But you're right, the Multipla is a pretty horrible looking car with an equally ugly name. -
Re:A well-oiled WHAT?
Not As Such.
The data about the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) election, the open-source software, the open-source operating system it ran on, and the open-source compiler that compiled it all is available via the makers, Software Improvements Pty Ltd.
The independant review, lab results of testing, and report on how it all worked in practice are available through the ACT Electoral Commission.
Not so much a well-oiled Chevy as a Holden Monaro which in the US is called a Pontiac GTO. As the GM site says, What Makes an American Legend? But it doesn't say the answer - good Aussie Engineering. Oi! Oi! Oi!

Why bother with chip mods? When Detroit has finally decided to revive serious muscle cars?
A chip-modded turbo Civic on nitrous might hold up against 350 hp @ 5200 rpm for one pass at the dragstrip. (Sorry for the Flash animation, but it's pretty inspiring.)
Of course, if money is unlimited, I saw one of these auctioned for around $150K on the "Speed" channel a couple weeks ago...
The worst thing about hot-rodding front wheel drive cars is that no matter how hard you try, they simply won't pop a wheelstand. But those old 'Cudas would, right off the dealer's lot.

Re:I really miss....
Even adjusted for inflation, $30k is much more expensive than the muscle cars of yesteryear. However, if that's your price range take a look at the new Pontiac GTO. Base price of $32k, 350HP 5.7L V-8, 0 to 60 in 5.3. Sweet car.

Cars have had HUDs for a while..
A number of General Motors products have had head-up displays for a couple of years. Most notably the Chevrolet Corvette, but the technology has now trickled down into several lower-end models like the Pontiac Grand Prix (which they're positioning as a BMW 3-series fighter - but in typical GM fashion they then neuter the GP by not offering a manual transmission).
I've not actually seen one running, but I gather the killer feature that makes it work well is the ability to unclutter the display (leaving only one or two features like speed and RPM) - and turn off the interior instrument panel lights when driving at night so your eyes can adjust 100% to looking outside and at the HUD. -

Re:Firebird based?
Here's a link to a picture of the shiny GTO, BTW: The GTO.

Re:Firebird based?
I'm waiting for the GTO myself.
:-)(Yes, I do actually want an Austrailian-built American sports car with an Italian racing-designation acronym for a name.)

Re:Firebird: Car!
Sorry to disappoint you, but Pontiac doesn't make the Firebird OR the Firebird Trans-Am anymore. Somewhere, David Hasselhof and Burt Reynolds are quietly weeping, mourning the passage of their valiant steeds.
2002 was the last model year any of these cars were built. The same goes for the Chevy Camaro.

There is only one Firebird
-
Re:They are 100% right.
To which I say: who cares? As long as people (managers) will be confusing the things. (Like: "Firebird DB? Must be from the same guys that do Firebird Browser. I tried that, didn't like it. Hence - we are not using the DB." etc...).
Yeah and they're obviously both writen by FirebirdSoftware ?
No? Well how about Firebird Web Design
Or how about Pontiac ? oh my mistake.
Still you can get a mortgage from Firebird , who incidentally have a database .
Or a hosting solution from Firebird Networks .
There was even a firebird joystick - so your point was?FirebirdSQL may be top of the search results pile now, but they took that position from someone else too....

More name changes ahead?
Okay, so Phoenix was renamed to avoid legal problems with the Phoenix BIOS people. Now I'm wondering whether we'll see more name changes to avoid legal problems from the Firebird people or the Thunderbird people.

Re:The Compaq name on laptops
I for one am entirely happy with the way this thing has panned out. My little Compaq Armada has been a tank, and I sure as heck don't want one of those HP Omnibooks (well, the low end cheapos) to replace the Armada line. I applaud HP's wise decision to maintain the better of the two lines, but at the same time hope that it won't become a curiously melded or designed-by-a-far-larger-committee exercise. I think the merger was the right choice, overall, and I look forward to a future of better products than either Compaq of HP could have offered separately.

Re:*Leap*
Being logical and level-headed about this will get you no where. Especially on Slashdot, but moreso when Pontiac-driving Americans are voting at the polls. Anyways, Bush Jr. is in the White House. His papa bombed a whole lot of people in Iraq and now the son must out-do the father. George W. has decided we are going to bomb the shit out of Afghanistan. And the next elections aren't until 2004.

Re:Toyota Prius
I mean, the Prius looks like an Echo, which is possibly the ugliest car in the history of US motoring.
BZZT! Wrong! Thank you for playing.
The ugliest car on North American roads now is the Pontiac Aztek. It's old-skool 70's butt ugly. It isn't even cuddly-ugly like an A-10 warthog. It just needs to be taken out and shot, along with its designers.

Re:Good Thing It's Linux
I'll be damned if I can find it now, but I saw a picture of the Nissan Fusion concept that had a Windows 95 login screen on the in-dash display. I seriously doubt it was for real; whoever did the paste-up in Photoshop got the edges of the dialog totally askew to the edges of the screen. But damn, don't scare me like that, Nissan! I've been soooo looking forward to the new Z. Windows 2000, I could live with, but not 95!
I hate to admit it, but the Super 8 is the first Chrysler concept in a long time that I thought was anything less than awesome. In a way, it was inevitable. Chrysler design has been living on the edge for years. The Super 8 finally pushed them over. At least Chrysler will have the good sense to not put something that ugly into production.
If you're looking for something easier on the eyes, try the aforementioned Z, or the Chrysler Crossfire.

air SUV
I'm sure as soon as these things start getting popular, someone will make a line of oversized ones for absolutely no particular reason other than to consume more fuel and take up more space... oh yeah, and to look butt ugly!
I'll just stick to my Vespa, land scooter for now.
