Re:Too little, too late
Well, unless the stuff to learn was that there is something good in glorified 3D-flybys, I don't get your last point.
But since you seem to be aware that there's more than just certain consumer whor..consulting group around, I'll save the flames. -
Not the only US demoparty
Pilgrimage 2004, the one and only American demoparty
What about the NAID parties (North American International Demoparty)? These were held in 1995 and 1996 and were very well regarded. Also check out the compulsory geek pics from the events.
There were a few more US parties, but I forgot the names. It's a damn shame the US doesn't have more of them. I remember it got very expensive for US demosceners to keep crossing the Atlantic to get to the parties in Finland and Denmark (not to mention forcing them to get a passport; something that the vast majority of Americans don't have!). -

Re:Just pointing out...
If you want to see an impressive thing in only a few bytes you can try tube, a very cool effect in only 256b. And it comes with source code included!

Pushing the limits
I still remember being amazed by Second Reality running on my 386 (which, due to having most of it's memory on the 8Mhz ISA bus, ran DOOM at less than 5fps).
Of course, if you're looking for sheer amazement, try Smash Designs' Second Reality 64, a recreation of Second Reality for the Commodore 64. Complete with fake PC bootup sequence. -
for more info on demos and the demoscene:a few links:
orange juice (news site): http://www.ojuice.net">
pouet (demo archive with discussion): http://www.pouet.net
scene.org (pretty much all demos since 1993 ...) : http://www.scene.org
those three have plenty of links to other sites too. nearly all platforms still have strong demo scenes active, from the Oric (no really!) through to the Atari Falcon (and ST/e)
you don't have to be a programmer to take part either, if you can pixel or weild a graphics tablet, knock up a catch chip choon or an entire mp3 album you'll fit right in.

The real 64k intro
Actually the first 64k intro (as the small ones were/are usually called) created using this tool was The product (das produkt) released at The Party and ranked 1st in the intro competition.
A really mind-blowing piece of work considering it was made four years ago and fit into 64k, be sure to check it out.

Flash gamesI've seen some innovative and silly games written in Flash and/or Shockwave (Pingu/Yetisports anyone?)... Seriously, about 30 (okay, 50%) of my time online is dedicated to silly stuff and I haven't installed a game (in a Windows environment) in a year or so.
So MAYBE Macromedia is now a threat to Microsoft with its "cross-platform" games!!
As an added bonus I could get Yetisports 1 (yeah, the "smack the pingu!!" one) running on my Series 60 phone as a Java app. No sound, though. Most of my gaming now done on the 3650. Only one virus to worry about (that is a "proof-of-concept" anyway), easy unninstall that does NOT leave traces, portability and surprising power for a small device (it runs a 109mhz ARM9 processor but some of the demos I saw for it do pack a punch)

Re:raytracing downsides?
Have a look at this real time RT demo (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9461) from 10 years later. Breakpoint'03.

Re:Back in the old days...
This easter TBL released Silkcut on Breakpoint and won the Amiga demo competition. It would have won even if the PC and Amiga competitions were mixed.
The divx version is available for download here.

Re:Why don't they just ask the demoscene?
So all PC effects were just software?
Ever seen The Good, the Bad and the Ugly? Unreal? Ambience? Show? D.Copperfield?-)
(and btw, your "recently with the introduction of more sophisticated GPUs" happened somewhere in 1995 when the video bandwidth went over 10MB/s. After that you could do just about any effect in pure software in full framerate) -

Re:Why don't they just ask the demoscene?
Some tech demos has been already done by some ex-demo makers:
- 3DMark series have been produced by some guys from Future Crew or Dust
- One of the latest nVidia demo 'Nalu' has been done by Hubert N'Guyen who is working at nVidia.
He was from Impact Studios
- List go on ..

VBA scripting
I wonder if any non-Microsoft®Office® spreadsheet program supports VBA scripting? Being able to run such useful Excel® programs as Pacelman and Excellence would be very important for the FOSS community. Apparently there has been some effort to make a Visual® Basic® interpreter for Linux, but the project doesn't seem to have made any progress.

Re:the software taketh what the hardware giveth.
One of the most amazing PC demos I ever saw was a 256 byte intro that ran under DOS (I forget the name of it).
This one? -

not surprised
I'm not surprised... A lot of attempts at emotional art done by techies are often cliche and ludricrously melodramatic, bordering on the silly. Look at the demo scene and their so called "poetry." Most of it is shit, made by people who think poetic meaning is derived from loosely (or not at all) connected words.
P.S. This ties in with the whole "what is art?" debate, which I don't feel like getting into... -

Assembly 1993
Assembly 1993 was also great. I traveled with other people from Norway. The atmosphere was almost religious when Future Crew showed their Second Reality on the big screen. This was on the peak for demo scene in general. I allmost cried at that moment.

Re:Demoparties in the USA
There's still a lot of creativity in demos nowadays, but I'm willing to go as far as saying that modern demo guys are lamers compared to guys who made demos back in the old days. It's so much easier nowadays. Hardware is doing all the tricks for the programmer.
Take a _good_ look at this demo and analyze it! It's a demo called Atom from a finnish group called Sorcerers. It was coded using IBM AT in 1990. It's size is 23552 _bytes_ and it has some nice features such as digitized voice. Think about the hardware and compilers back then. This is something that will make you say "wow" if you think you know something about computers/programming. -
Re:Assembly
You forgot another great demo by Future Crew: "Second Reality" ! If you haven't seen it - go watch it now!
In 1998 "Smash Design" created " Second Reality for C64" which also is really cool!

Re:Assembly
That demo would be Unreal by Future Crew. One of the first megademos, and a real milestone in the PC demoscene. Another great PC demo from that era is Crystal Dreams by Triton. To watch them, just get your hands on a 386 and a Gravis UltraSound... and you're good to go!

Re:I think he's right
A couple of links thrown up by Google...
Jesus on E's by LSD
Old mods (scroll down to 1993)
I haven't/can't test the downloads at the moment so apologies if these links disappoint. -
