Tickets For The World's Biggest Computer Party
vvizard writes "For Norwegian geeks in particular, easter is preferable spent at the worlds biggest computer-party [The Gathering]. That is, for those lucky enough to get tickets at least. Tickets for the scandinavian people where released through Partyticket last night, and got sold out as fast as the system managed (which due to extreme traffic, isn't very fast). However, there are still tickets left. Foreigners, demosceners and professional gamers have their own pool of tickets, which started selling tonight. So if you fit in one of the previous mentioned categories, and would like to experience the biggest computer-party in the world, now is the time to check out www.gathering.org for information, and www.partyticket.net for ticket-booking."

I've never been to the Gathering but I try to attend Assembly, which is held in Finland every year. It's not quite the same as it used to be during the early nineties when Amiga still ruled the demoscene but the PC's were already coming. I still remember in Assembly '92 when a really cool (can't remember the name) PC demo got a standing ovation from the Amiga crowd.
[sarcasm>] ... since we all now know that Linux users (especially in Norway) are all avid DVD-copiers...

Uh.. a bunch of dorks and a bunch of computers. What's the point? Besides, it's not like you're going to meet them all and see everything. After a certain point, a 50 person gathering is the same as a 500,000 person gathering.
The gathering, along with dreamhack, is just gamers parties. Many people just goes there to play games nowadays. At Assembly it's about the same, but they try to keep the demoscene alive, by letting us access a seperate area away from the gamers, where we can sit and produce all nights...
If you want to access a DEMO party (less gaming) I would recommend Breakpoint in germany which should be in april.
State of the art in france is also very good, but is in january so we've past it already.
As I said, Assembly is also good if you are in the "oldschool" area...
I'm not saying The Gathering and Dreamhack aren't about demos at all, they are, but the gaming takes focus I think.
Does playing Solitaire at work count a professional gaming?
This is not my opinion. Actually, it's not even an opinion. And I'm nowhere to be seen near it
Note that The Gathering will feature a concert by danish Commodore64 band PRESS PLAY ON TAPE on saturday the 10th of april. Another reason for showing up!
A lot of pictures from The Gathering last year.

Humour is a delicate concept. What's funny for one, is completely unfunny for others, and vice versa. While we can argue about what's funny or not until the cows come home, the one thing I do know is that I don't like people who think they and they alone can determine what's funny. A lot of people still like this "I for one.." joke and will give it some Funny points, others do not. I've learned to accept that. Will you ?
Demoparties do take place in the USA, but not with the frequency nor large attendance that one would find at such spectacular events as Assembly or The Gathering.
The next North American Demoparty is going to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 5-7. Refer to pilgrimage.scene.org for details.

Nerd 2: What people? Everyone here seems to get along just fine...
Nerd 1: Not any of us. The people on the "outside."
Nerd 2: Oh yeah. Forgot about them.
Nerd 3: So what're we gonna do about it?
Nerd 4: I know! We'll throw a party!
Nerd 5: Yeah! A COMPUTER PARTY!
Nerd 1: Great idea! Meeting adjourned.
Better luck next time, nerds.

Just this: Campus Party is the biggest Computer Party I know in the world, with 4000 people. It is celebrated in Valencia, Spain.
They (Assembly, Dreamhack, TG) are all quality events. And with any party that large, there are bound to be circles of people you don't agree with; janitors, gamers, or otherwise.
Some party reports suggest that there were as many as 7000 visitors if you include the single-day participants at Assembly 2003. And a confirmed 6600 attendees at Assembly 2002. It's clearly a numbers game as you, Mr. AC, have already pointed out.
-- RaD Man / ACiDI have been to this party twice, last time was three years ago. The first time was in 98, and I guess I was amongst the 1% with linux. Second time I was amazed over what kind of people actually went. The majority was below 18 IRC'ers who would sit and chat the entire time. The second largest group was gamers, but they were playing single player most of the time.
During the Demo presentations several people were playing music loudly. There were restricitons on speaker size, but obviously that was not enough.
Frankly, unless you are below 18 and have a need for chatting in the same big room as everyone else, don't bother to go.

Wow, so we are all some level of geek here (or else why would we be using this site) yet constantly their are comments about geeks and body odour, lack of women, moroseness. Strikes me that the few making these comments gotta be the ones suffering these afflictions.
you know you can actually try to change things by bathing or something and not trying to transfer your issues to others. Im a geek and i work with many others. All of use have good home lives, most have long term girlfriends, and NO body odour problems. In fact well adjusted people.
Im sure the problem with you guys is some kinda elitism harking back to your school days when you were teased for geeky tendencies.. GROW THE FUCK UP!!! aint ya heard its cool to be a geek now?? for fcuks sake guys!!
Throughout society i witness the "jocks" from highschool who never grew up and live life into middle age playing on the fact they were once great at some sport or another and love their jobs in the toyota plant (which they have been in for 20 years) but shit, i had a rough time at school for liking computers and taking things apart just coz i could. I sure as hell dont wanna remind myself of this by taunting others the way that I was.
I now go to my old hometown occasionally and feel great knowing al lthe jovks got crappy jobs earning shit money and me and the couple of geek friends i kept in touch with drive sports cars and go to nice restaurants.. and..... we actually have other things to discuss than girls we shagged or people we beatup. (okay so i got little loving action til i was at uni and my fighting abilities amount to the 100 yard sprint).
Just a thought..

I was there in 1993, although it was in another place then (Lillestrom i belive). Back then it was pure geeks let me tell you :)
... And bringing them demos home for some easy credits on the BBS'es when you got home :)
2unlimited "no limit" playing loud 24h a day, as far as calling it LAN, well we had a NULL-modem cabel and played VROOM on 2 Amiga 500.
Back in these days it was not all about playing CS and WC3 (yeah i know im a bit harsh now but...)

In fact Prima talk with Ses about taking lots of photos...

The cathering has had more than 5000 people the last copuple years. And the main hall is gigantic, so there's probably room for many more.
a) It's clearly been a gaming party since at least 97. (Dunno before that. At least there were good releases in 96)
b) It has been traditionally arranged at the same time as certain middle european SCENE parties whose popularity has only grown.
-> You aren't going see much even norwegian scene there.

Euskal Encounter 11
24th-27th July, 2003
4,000 attenders in Bilbao
The 11th edition of Euskal Encounter was the most important event in Spain and a must-be-there for european events. GameGune, offering the best prizes in Europe, and the Scene area, movement's main meeting place in Spain, gave attenders previously unknown levels of enjoyment and participation that joined together 4,000 attenders and more than 2,100 computers.

The gathering changed around 1995. It used to be geek only with a high level of knowledge.
People laugh at you if you ask about technology and programming today. The gathering is a nice social event for gamers, but it used to be something else.
-oldtimer.
Assembly 1993 was also great. I traveled with other people from Norway. The atmosphere was almost religious when Future Crew showed their Second Reality on the big screen. This was on the peak for demo scene in general. I allmost cried at that moment. :-)

Assembly is the largest and best demoparty (if can them by that name, anymore) in the world today. (+ it's got the best prices)
Period.
i had no idea what you all were talking about. wikipedia helped me.
aparently its like cracking software and shit. i totally agree, every party should have some dedicated crackers incase a new patch is released or something.
The demoscene is an computer sub-culture that came to prominence during the rise of the 16 bit micros (the Atari ST and the Amiga), but demos first appeared during the 8-bit era on computers such as C64 and ZX Spectrum.
Demos began as software cracker's 'signatures'. When a cracked program was started, the cracker or his team would take credit via an impressive-looking graphical introduction or intro. The first time this appeared was on the Apple II computers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Later, these intros became so involved that they evolved into their own subculture independent of cracking software. These were not initially called demos but rather letter, message etc.
I lovingly select my best pewter hand-painted fantasy figurines, and place them in their padded cigar box. I select my best "gemstone" gaming dice and place them in their leather sack. I place enough "adult" oriented comics into my backpack to last for two transatlantic flights. On my hacked Zaurus running Opie I have placed maps to the events, so I will not get lost.
I am so there.
I for one, welcome our new humour dissecting overlords.
Chapter and verse, thank you.
I thought the internet was the world's biggest computer party. It certainly has been for me.
