Re:The Xbox 360 Just Became Massively Overpriced
The Xbox 360 is supporting 1080p following the fall 2006 update, which I believe is scheduled to be distributed prior to the PS3 launch. If that's a result of the competition from the PS3, great. But it really isn't a selling point right now.
What was the original MS attitude towards 1080p support in games? Well, their initial take on the 1080p support is "basically impossible", see Xbox exec on PS3: "1080p... will be basically impossible". As late as Aug 17, 2006, they were still saying No 1080p games for PS3 this year, 'Don't get sucked into the hype'. Then why suddenly just prior to TGS 2006, they announced 1080p support? As we now know, it's because Sony will be able to ship 1080p games at launch, see Harrison confirms 6 1090p games for PS3. Should I be worried about how committed are they to 1080p in 360? -
Re:$99 a year?
$99 a year is a HUGE privilege compared to the ridiculous barrier to entry that has been in place for console game development for so long.
I mean, look how much it costs for a PlayStation 2 development kit! (Of course, Sony stays mum about it, not mentioning it on their websites, but according to unofficial sources on the web, it costs approx. $19,000.00(US)!!!). I'm guessing PS3 development has a similar barrier to entry.
But seriously, it is about time that they "democratize" game development - especially with news of declining game sales, and people being less satisfied with the overall quality/fun-factor of new releases. Another reason this makes sense is due to the fact that we are seeing an inevitable convergence bewtween the console and the PC (In both technology and price, when you consider the PS3 price-tag!). This convergence makes it less feasible to reserve developer access to an exclusive few. (That last link mentions how the 10,000 Playstation 3 dev kits that were publicized went to only 208 companies!) Of course a company like Sony would argue about the amount of junk that will be produced when accessibility to Platform development is lowered like this, but there will inevitably be some gems produced that otherwise would not have made it to market, making it vastly worth-it. This could potentially give the Xbox 360 a huge advantage over the Playstation 3 in overall marketshare (that's all these companies really care about, no matter what they tell us) AND actually even benefit gamers at the same time. -
Re:Care to compare?
1) Sony likely will charge more than $10 for the adapter since this is Sony and they milk their accessories for all they are worth (multitap, anyone?).
2) There already is (and has been for awhile) a way to transfer Xbox saves to the 360. Look it up, it's made by Datel.
3) Sony has already admitted they won't have full backwards compatability but, of course, it's not their fault. They have said that "some" (Sonyspeak for "a lot of") titles won't work if the developer violated Sony's TRCs. Any developer knows that is a bullsh*t answer since until the last year or so, none of Sony's TRCs dealt with hardware revisions. It is sort of like a cop pulling you over for speeding and then changing the posted speed limit to be lower than your actual speed. Look here: http://www.ps3portal.com/ps3/article/328.html
or just google and get the admission from Sony's own PR. 100% isn't going to happen. Sure it will probably attempt to play every title- at least the 360 will only play games that have actually been tested- but what you'll get is something that will at best be on par with the BC in the 360. Actually, it will likely be much worse since the Xbox had a well-defined hardware abstraction layer whereas the PS1 and PS2 never did- Sony expected you to directly write to the low-level hardware to decent performance. Sorry PS3 faithful, there'll be glitches, slowdowns, and maybe a crash or two. But, again, that won't be Sony's fault. It never is. -
Re:Another reason...
$499 for a PS3 with 1080p support? Get your facts straight. Only the $599 version supports 1080p.
Bzzt. Wrong. Both versions support 1080p. The less expensive version does not support HDMI. Perhaps it is you who needs to get the facts straight. Take a look: http://www.ps3portal.com/sony/article/308.html
There aren't even launch titles for the PS3 yet!
...and the FUD continues. Please look here: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/636/636848p3.html
The PS2, OTOH, is notoriously unreliable
Hmm, that's funny... My first generation PS2 (the older big one) still runs like a charm. And yet, I know a couple people who have had Xbox360s for less than 6 months who have had to already get replacements.
You are either completely clueless, or one of the anti-Sony koolaid drinkers. Careful, or the bandwagon might leave without you. -
Some Facts
Here is the run down on the hardware

It is a great deal folks, just check it out. Think too, how much incentive M$ is spreading around right now. Always buy hardware not hype.

Dual Shock Gone....
It seems that the introduction of the motion sensing on the PS3 controller means that dual shock has to be removed from the controller.
From the linked article:
The press release stated that, "Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."IMHO removing the vibration feedback is a big loss for PS3, so this motion sensing better be the bollocks

Breaking news!!
The PS3 will also feature other pricey items, such as a hard drive
That's news to Sony, AFAIK...See here and here, although I admit that they haven't come out and said that "it won't have a hard drive built in" they certainly haven't said that it will either.
I always assumed that was the whole reason behind the Xbox 360 Core, so that people would go to the store and see a 360 Core for $299 and a PS3 for $499(good luck even getting that low!) with identical hardware(minus blu-ray*) and make the simple decision to get the Core+3 games for the same price as the PS3 with no games.
* - Who has blu-ray movies? When the PS2 came out DVD had been on the market for years and people already had DVD collections and the ability to rent them at the local video store, so it made sense to get a console that also played DVDs. I don't see the same happening for BluRay or HD-DVD. It will take years for the hardware to come down enough in price to catch on in the mainstream so it won't be as big of an advantge(if at all) this generation. -
Not bad
Not bad, consitering that the PS3 will support mouse and keyboard. Then again, they say that it will support linux too. Whoa, deja vu...

Re:Sorry your console is out of date...
The 5-6 year lifespan on consoles is fairly typical, too. A brief timeline of consoles shows you have the NES at 6, SNES at 5, PS1 at 5. The trend continues, as you have noted, with the Cube and the PS2.
Of course, if you look at some of the other, "runner-up" consoles... say, Sega's... you'll find them often being released in 3-4 year increments.

Re:Speed isn't everything
Sony isn't doing everything by themselves. They were planning to, but once they realized that "cell" is not going to provide adequate graphics capabilities, they went with one of the two tried and true graphics chip companies -- the only one that wasn't already making chips for the competition.
-
Re:Read the fine print
Knowing Microsoft it will probably have some security hole that will infect my tv with spyware.
Not until your TV has a cell processor.
Probably not spyware. More likely adware. Each adware will be a "software cell" that runs on a single APU of a cell processor. Because of the way a cell processor works the (software) cells will be able to migrate to other cell processors, such as your PlayStation 3, or other consumer electronics devices. -
Re:Here's what I predict
Or... not. Just an idea... but maybe you shouldn't just pull stuff out of your ass to sound like you know something. PlayStation 3 chip will go easy on developers
