You must not live in Phoenix, Arozona.

Re:so how much of a hero are you?
Yea but NYC didn't provide the support necessary when they banned the flashlights and the cops started using plungers and stuff.

Re:News?
This type of mass organized rape happened in the colonial wars as well, like the European wars in Kosovo by the Serbs, Berlin by the Russians and the Germans everywhere. Using sexual violence as a weapon of terror on an industrial scale is a modern invention, before in Africa men would go kidnap "warbrides" and bring them back to their people as trophies. They did not tape them with a jagged piece of glass till they could not longer hold in their piss. The Belgians were monsters and unleashed a type of violence that Africa had never seen before. The article linked does not do the subject justice, if you want to understand why setting up such a wide disparity economically and militarily between those who would acquiesce or participate in the brutality and those who have their hands chopped off and their vaginas ripped apart read this.

Re:District Strength
How or what does a district really do? Perhaps I'm naive but isn't a vote a vote? What matters what district you're in? If 100 people vote, 51 for x and 49 for y. It shouldn't matter who voted where.
Well, say you are someone with a stake in the balance of power between the Reps and the Dems in the House of Representatives. For example, lets pretend you are ... I don't know ... the leader of one of the parties in the House. Let's further say that the House is closely divided. To you a couple of changed seats either way can mean the difference between being (arguably) the most powerful person in the US, and meerly being the lead whiner.
Now lets say you somehow, by hook or by crook, manage to get yourself in control of redistricting a nice big state ... like say ... Texas.
Now lets suppose this state happens to have a lot of close districts, 50/50 rep and dem. If you can get yourself access to the newest census data mining software, you can figure out where reps and dems are down to a really low resolution. So what you can do is take 5 or so 50/50 districts. Pick one, and split all its reps you can find into the other districts. Move something like %15 of the other 4 districts' dems into the first district. Now instead of 5 50/50 districts, you have 4 safely rep districts and 1 very safe dem district. Do this a couple of more times, and you can pick up a lot of seats.
Of course there's a price to pay for this. That new safe dem in the house is probably going to be very liberal now, where she perhaps couldn't get away with that before. However, the other 4 reps are going to be a bit more conservative, since they can now get away with that. The one liberal is in the minority, and can be labeled a kook and ignored. Another drawback is that you just made the House way more partisan. But what do you care? You're now the most powerful person in the US! Time to go have a talk with those rich lobbyists... -
Re:Well Duh
You know that the many US lawmakers who are in bed with special interests are ready to jump all over this study. One more chance to "discredit" global warming.
As for your comment, I think you are right on point. I mean, even if there are uncontrollable external factors that are at least partly responsible for global warming, that does not absolve us of the responsibility to manage our planet properly.
Even if it were to be found that global warming is a complete unreality or is entirely out of our control and due to the sun or some other factor, we still face the same issues. What about the fact that we are facing extinction of staggering number of species, due to our mismanagement of the earth? What about the fact that 20% of the world population doesn't have access to clean water?
As pressing as global warming is, arguing that man must change his habits solely on the platform of global warming is a one-legged argument. We have many, compelling reasons to make changes. Of course, we won't think about it until it's too late. -
Re:How is this provocative ?
I agree. The US has the most frightening, provocative, dangerous and presumptuous military doctrine ever. Read for yourself and mod me flamebait afterwards.

And How Does Texas Treat Mexicans?
Hey, you don't like Texas, fine, don't visit or move there. But get your facts straight. It's like listening to Microsoft talk about why Linux is more expensive than Windows.
Great analogy. Honestly, critique of operating systems compared to the critique of racism.
It was also one of the first states to elect African Americans and women to elected office.
That's just super. How does Texas treat Mexicans?
My facts are straight, where I went to school, we were taught that the Alamo was a battle to liberate slaves being held by the Americans. Funny how history looks different on other sides of the boarder, isn't it? -
Re:Interesting 'idea'
Regarding:
The current school systems are already being pumped cash, but still show horrible results. Especially when compared to private schools.
And Regarding:
That simply isn't true. ... http://www.pww.org/article/articleview/9765/1/338/
To further clarify the report cited is for charter schools (publicly funded, privately run) as opposed to private schools. So both posts hold but say something different. -

That simply isn't true. The report came out a couple of months ago from a government study that privately run charter school students scored lower than public school students. The report didn't get a lot of press for obvious reasons. Here's the first google news link I found:

It makes me wonder ...
which of the seven nations Bush wants to nuke, is going to get it first? Of course, doing so may incite people to commit regicide, but I can imagine it will be enjoyable for people possessing a morbid sense of humor to watch.

Republicans fleeing Bush on Arctic drilling issue
Taken from http://www.pww.org/article/articleview/7695/1/285/
Todd Tollefson , 10.09.2005 14:48
Two dozen House Republicans, including three committee chairmen, have directly opposed the Bush administration's effort to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling by sneaking it through the budget approval process.
"An effort to include the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the [budget] reconciliation will further complicate an already difficult situation," they wrote last month in a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo and Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle.
Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-N.H.) asked moderate Republicans to join him in signing the letter, calling on the Republican House leaders not to include language that would allow oil and gas exploration in the wildlife refuge.
The GOP signers said they "would have serious concerns about any budget bill that contains provisions authorizing the development of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." They continued, "As you know, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge represents one of the last large pristine natural environments left in our country. In 1980 Congress recognized the need to protect this national treasure and prohibited any oil and gas drilling or exploration on the coastal plain. We believe that the debate on opening this unique land to oil and gas exploration should be done outside of the budget process, not as part of an omnibus bill."
The ANWR group is notable because it includes a trio of committee chairmen: Science Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) and Government Reform Chairman Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.).
Several of the signers were prompted to sign through a successful e-mail campaign initiated by the Sierra Club in July. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) said in a reply to constituents who contacted him through the e-mail campaign that he is and will remain strongly opposed to any legislation that would authorize oil and gas exploration of the Arctic Refuge.
The Senate voted in March to remove the Arctic drilling provision from the budget, but the House failed to do so in April by only three votes. While the House has approved drilling in ANWR in the past, GOP leaders have little room for error on budget measures, which typically pass with a two- or three-vote margin. Opposition from such a significant bloc of House Republicans underscores the difficulty GOP leaders face in putting together a package that can pass in both chambers.
The House Resources Committee will decide the outcome by Sept. 16.

Re:Freedom of the Press
I completely agree with your points for the most part... But I'd like to offer you some hope on this one:
I question The Journalist, too. Freedom of the press extends to those that own a press, and if you want to work as a journalist, you almost have to work for some fat cat with a press. Said fat cat isn't going to let you print stories that criticize fat cats in any meaningful way.
Thankfully, there are alternative voices out there if you are willing to look. But do stay away from the American "name brands" of media; they are likely only to lead you into the pen with the other sheep.
