It rocketed across the Internet a week ago, a startling newspaper report that agents from the US Department of Homeland Security had visited a student at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth at his New Bedford home simply because he had tried to borrow Mao Tse-Tung's ''Little Red Book" for a history seminar on totalitarian goverments.
The story, first reported in last Saturday's New Bedford Standard-Times, was picked up by other news organizations, prompted diatribes on left-wing and right-wing blogs, and even turned up in an op-ed piece written by Senator Edward M. Kennedy in the Globe.
But yesterday, the student confessed that he had made it up after being confronted by the professor who had repeated the story to a Standard-Times reporter.
The professor, Brian Glyn Williams, said he went to his former student's house and asked about inconsistencies in his story. The 22-year-old student admitted it was a hoax, Williams said.
''I made it up," the professor recalled him saying. ''I'm sorry. . . . I'm so relieved that it's over."
The student was not identified in any reports. The Globe interviewed him Thursday but decided not to write a story about his assertion, because of doubts about its veracity. The student could not be reached yesterday.
Williams said the student gave no explanation. But Williams, who praised the student as hard-working and likeable, said he was shaken by the deception.
''I feel as if I was lied to, and I have no idea why," said Williams, an associate professor of Islamic history. He said the possibility the government was scrutinizing books borrowed by his students ''disturbed me tremendously."
The story stems from an incident in the fall in a history seminar on totalitarianism and fascism taught by a colleague of Williams, Robert Pontbriand. The student, who was in the seminar, told Pontbriand he had requested an unabridged copy of ''Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung" through the UMass interlibrary loan system for a research paper.
Days later, he told Pontbriand, he was stunned to get a visit by Homeland Security agents who told him the book was on a ''watch list" and asked why he wanted it. Pontbriand was appalled. ''A university is a place for the open inquiry for the truth," he said.
The story quickly made its way around the history department, and it might have stayed on campus if The New York Times had not broken a story about President Bush's approval of a controversial domestic spying program.
After that story, a Standard-Times reporter called Williams, who has traveled to Afghanistan for research, to ask whether he was concerned about government surveillance, Williams said.
As an afterthought, Williams said, he told the reporter about the alleged visit by the Homeland Security agents, and that became the lead of the Dec. 17 Standard-Times story.
John Hoey, spokesman for UMass-Dartmouth, said the university did not expect to take any action against the student. ''This was a conversation that took place between a student and his faculty members," Hoey said.
Dan Rosenfeld, managing editor of the newspaper, declined to comment yesterday, saying that the paper considered it a ''competitive newspaper story."
The university issued a statement Monday defending academic freedom, but said it had had no visits from Homeland Security agents and no record of any student seeking the Mao book through an interlibrary loan.

Two dozen House Republicans, including three committee chairmen, have directly opposed the Bush administration's effort to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling by sneaking it through the budget approval process.
"An effort to include the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the [budget] reconciliation will further complicate an already difficult situation," they wrote last month in a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo and Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle.
Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-N.H.) asked moderate Republicans to join him in signing the letter, calling on the Republican House leaders not to include language that would allow oil and gas exploration in the wildlife refuge.
The GOP signers said they "would have serious concerns about any budget bill that contains provisions authorizing the development of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." They continued, "As you know, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge represents one of the last large pristine natural environments left in our country. In 1980 Congress recognized the need to protect this national treasure and prohibited any oil and gas drilling or exploration on the coastal plain. We believe that the debate on opening this unique land to oil and gas exploration should be done outside of the budget process, not as part of an omnibus bill."
The ANWR group is notable because it includes a trio of committee chairmen: Science Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) and Government Reform Chairman Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.).
Several of the signers were prompted to sign through a successful e-mail campaign initiated by the Sierra Club in July. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) said in a reply to constituents who contacted him through the e-mail campaign that he is and will remain strongly opposed to any legislation that would authorize oil and gas exploration of the Arctic Refuge.
The Senate voted in March to remove the Arctic drilling provision from the budget, but the House failed to do so in April by only three votes. While the House has approved drilling in ANWR in the past, GOP leaders have little room for error on budget measures, which typically pass with a two- or three-vote margin. Opposition from such a significant bloc of House Republicans underscores the difficulty GOP leaders face in putting together a package that can pass in both chambers.

Colonel John Alexander never met a war he didn't like.
As an unofficial spokesman for the Military-Industrial Complex, Alexander
has written a book called Future War in which he continues to ply his
trade -- promoting war -- and most importantly advocating those
all-important expendables called "weapons systems."
The oxymoronic "non-lethal weapons" which Alexander touts are anything but.
They include exotic systems like electromagnetic weapons, chemical and
biological warfare, so-called physical restraints like goop guns, etc.,
acoustic weapons, as well as information warfare technologies, which include
good old-fashioned military propaganda -- like his book itself.
Without questioning the wrong-headed abstruse US Government policies of
war-making, he includes a brief history of War's Greatest Hits in a chapter
called "Are We the World's Police Force?"
Alexander's answer is an unequivocal yes. These include -- Restore Hope:
Somalia; United Shield: Somalia Round II; Uphold Democracy: Haiti; Bosnia;
The Idaho Rebellion (just kidding).
Internet Bashing
In a chapter called "Information Warfare," Alexander sounds the alarm
about -- you guessed -it -- the "dangers of the Internet." You see, those
nasty hackers, crackers and phrackers are out to get the Information
Infrastructure.
How do we know? Alexander says so. "It is predicted that anti-hacker
software sales will increase from $1.1 billion in 1995 to greater than $16
billion in 2000," he writes. "The President's Committee of Critical
Infrastructure Protection noted the increased likelihood of computer
terrorism and recommended that research and development, now $250 million
annually, should be increased $100 million per year until $12 billion is
provided on a yearly basis."
No matter what the "security" problem, all we need to do is spend more
taxpayer dollars on the Military-Industrial Complex.
Secret Life of John Alexander
Virtually disregarded in this book is Alexander's spooky background as a
Psy0ps (or psychological operations) expert, as well as a psychic warfare-
mind control operative.
According to Alex Constantine, author of Virtual Government (Feral House,
1997), Colonel John Alexander has displayed a long term interest in the
paranormal and "has actively promoted psychic metal bending among government
personnel using the techniques pioneered by Jack Houck of
McDonnell-Douglas."
Before his "retirement," Alexander had a 32-year career in the Army,
including a stint as director of Advanced Systems Concepts Office, US Army
Laboratory Command Alexander was also chief of the Advanced Human Technology
Office & Security Command (INSCOM) and ran the "non-lethal" weapons lab at
Los Alamos in New Mexico.
Alexander allegedly also has a doctor's degree in thanatology, the science
of death.
British reporter Armen Victorian concludes that John B. Alexander is an
active operative assigned to a covert military group "specializing in
dissemination of disinformation," collectively known as the "Aviary." In a
recent interview, David Morehouse, author of Psychic Warrior, (St. Martin's
Press, 1996) reports that "Alexander was a Special Forces officer in Vietnam
who commanded a Montagnard battalion. Others say he was a member of the
Phoenix Project [the notorious CIA assassination program]. When he came out,
he worked with the intelligence community and he never left."
Later Alexander led a CIA harassment campaign against Morehouse. Alexander,
the "retired" colonel working for the CIA, Jim Schnabel and Joe McMoneagle
were all actively involved in spreading disinformation Campaign against him

Confesses fabricating US surveillance story

It rocketed across the Internet a week ago, a startling newspaper report that agents from the US Department of Homeland Security had visited a student at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth at his New Bedford home simply because he had tried to borrow Mao Tse-Tung's ''Little Red Book" for a history seminar on totalitarian goverments.
The story, first reported in last Saturday's New Bedford Standard-Times, was picked up by other news organizations, prompted diatribes on left-wing and right-wing blogs, and even turned up in an op-ed piece written by Senator Edward M. Kennedy in the Globe.
But yesterday, the student confessed that he had made it up after being confronted by the professor who had repeated the story to a Standard-Times reporter.
The professor, Brian Glyn Williams, said he went to his former student's house and asked about inconsistencies in his story. The 22-year-old student admitted it was a hoax, Williams said.
''I made it up," the professor recalled him saying. ''I'm sorry. . . . I'm so relieved that it's over."
The student was not identified in any reports. The Globe interviewed him Thursday but decided not to write a story about his assertion, because of doubts about its veracity. The student could not be reached yesterday.
Williams said the student gave no explanation. But Williams, who praised the student as hard-working and likeable, said he was shaken by the deception.
''I feel as if I was lied to, and I have no idea why," said Williams, an associate professor of Islamic history. He said the possibility the government was scrutinizing books borrowed by his students ''disturbed me tremendously."
The story stems from an incident in the fall in a history seminar on totalitarianism and fascism taught by a colleague of Williams, Robert Pontbriand. The student, who was in the seminar, told Pontbriand he had requested an unabridged copy of ''Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung" through the UMass interlibrary loan system for a research paper.
Days later, he told Pontbriand, he was stunned to get a visit by Homeland Security agents who told him the book was on a ''watch list" and asked why he wanted it. Pontbriand was appalled. ''A university is a place for the open inquiry for the truth," he said.
The story quickly made its way around the history department, and it might have stayed on campus if The New York Times had not broken a story about President Bush's approval of a controversial domestic spying program.
After that story, a Standard-Times reporter called Williams, who has traveled to Afghanistan for research, to ask whether he was concerned about government surveillance, Williams said.
As an afterthought, Williams said, he told the reporter about the alleged visit by the Homeland Security agents, and that became the lead of the Dec. 17 Standard-Times story.
John Hoey, spokesman for UMass-Dartmouth, said the university did not expect to take any action against the student. ''This was a conversation that took place between a student and his faculty members," Hoey said.
Dan Rosenfeld, managing editor of the newspaper, declined to comment yesterday, saying that the paper considered it a ''competitive newspaper story."
The university issued a statement Monday defending academic freedom, but said it had had no visits from Homeland Security agents and no record of any student seeking the Mao book through an interlibrary loan.

Two dozen House Republicans, including three committee chairmen, have directly opposed the Bush administration's effort to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling by sneaking it through the budget approval process.
"An effort to include the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the [budget] reconciliation will further complicate an already difficult situation," they wrote last month in a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo and Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle.
Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-N.H.) asked moderate Republicans to join him in signing the letter, calling on the Republican House leaders not to include language that would allow oil and gas exploration in the wildlife refuge.
The GOP signers said they "would have serious concerns about any budget bill that contains provisions authorizing the development of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." They continued, "As you know, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge represents one of the last large pristine natural environments left in our country. In 1980 Congress recognized the need to protect this national treasure and prohibited any oil and gas drilling or exploration on the coastal plain. We believe that the debate on opening this unique land to oil and gas exploration should be done outside of the budget process, not as part of an omnibus bill."
The ANWR group is notable because it includes a trio of committee chairmen: Science Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) and Government Reform Chairman Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.).
Several of the signers were prompted to sign through a successful e-mail campaign initiated by the Sierra Club in July. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) said in a reply to constituents who contacted him through the e-mail campaign that he is and will remain strongly opposed to any legislation that would authorize oil and gas exploration of the Arctic Refuge.
The Senate voted in March to remove the Arctic drilling provision from the budget, but the House failed to do so in April by only three votes. While the House has approved drilling in ANWR in the past, GOP leaders have little room for error on budget measures, which typically pass with a two- or three-vote margin. Opposition from such a significant bloc of House Republicans underscores the difficulty GOP leaders face in putting together a package that can pass in both chambers.
The House Resources Committee will decide the outcome by Sept. 16.

This Act may be cited as the `Space Preservation Act of 2001'.
SEC. 2. REAFFIRMATION OF POLICY ON THE PRESERVATION OF PEACE IN SPACE.
Congress reaffirms the policy expressed in section 102(a) of the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 (42 U.S.C. 2451(a)), stating that it `is the policy of the United States that activities in space should be devoted to peaceful purposes for the benefit of all mankind.'.
SEC. 3. PERMANENT BAN ON BASING OF WEAPONS IN SPACE.
The President shall
(1) implement a permanent ban on spacebased weapons of the United States and remove from space any existing spacebased weapons of the United States; and
(2) immediately order the permanent termination of research and development, testing, manufacturing, production, and deployment of all spacebased weapons of the United States and their components.
SEC. 4. WORLD AGREEMENT BANNING SPACEBASED WEAPONS.
The President shall direct the United States representatives to the United Nations and other international organizations to immediately work toward negotiating, adopting, and implementing a world agreement banning spacebased weapons.
SEC. 5. REPORT.
The President shall submit to Congress not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, and every 90 days thereafter, a report on
