Re:So, where is ...
Reddit to the rescue :

Slashdot enjoying the clickbait...
Posting anon because I enjoy my job.
For some reason, slashdot has mostly ignored this topic for the past couple weeks, and now we get an article that revels in moralistic naysaying while ignoring what keeps this going.
The recent "ugliness" is not just a product of sexism and misogyny. To be fair, women have been harassed. To be even more fair, not all women who have been harassed have been harassed by "gamers".
The fiasco that has now grown into "Gamergate" (not my term) is not easy to relate in few words, but I will summarize that it is a reaction by enthusiast gamers against a clique of prominent video games journalists, writers, and indie developers who have been using their personal connections to promote each other's works and political ideology, as well as exclude those who do not toe the line.
It began when the ex-boyfriend of indie developer Zoe Quinn made a blog post detailing with evidence how Ms Quinn cheated on him with at least five other people, as well as perceived attempts by her to emotionally manipulate him. (http://thezoepost.wordpress.com/) Among individuals named in the post were Nathan Grayson (a writer for Gawker Media's Kotaku and former writer at Rock, Paper, Shotgun) and Robin Arnott (a judge at the Indiecade independent games competition that later went on to give Ms Quinn's game an award). Initially, this post was ignored by games journalists, and was circulated in online gaming forums. However, many forums deleted any and all topics concerning the matter, including the largest reddit thread deletion in history (with over 20K comments deleted; http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/2dz0gs/totalbiscuit_discusses_the_state_of_games/) concerning youtube commentator TotalBiscuit's response to Ms Quinn allegedly using a false DMCA request to take down one of the first videos discussing the subject (http://themundanematt.tumblr.com/post/95428752119/dmca-notice-and-removal).
Investigation by redditors and members of various boards on 4chan soon uncovered that Ms Quinn allegedly pointed her twitter followers to critique a new game charity designed to help female game designers have their ideas actualized because she felt the charity's profit-motivated goals and its policy towards transwomen (biological males who identify as women) were oppressive (http://static.fjcdn.com/large/pictures/60/24/6024fb_5271447.jpg). When the creator of the charity attempted to seek promotion from major gaming journalist sites, he was told that since Ms Quinn had issues with the charity, no promotion would be possible (knowyourmeme.com/photos/814183-quinnspiracy).
While specific written pieces promoting Ms Quinn's work were actually short in supply, further investigations showed that the relationships of other journalists to their subjects were less tenuous. Patricia Hernandez of Kotaku was shown through previous twitter conversations to have lived with and possibly had a romantic relationship with Anne Anthropy, an indie developer she directly promoted in several articles. Ben Kuchera of Polygon, among others, was shown to be a supporter of Ms Quinn on Patreon, a site designed to crowd-fund stipends to content-creators. In response to these issues, the two above mentioned games journalism sites posted clarifications and/or updates to their positions on conflicts of interest, noting that they would attempt more honest journalism in the future, as well as in the case of Kotaku disallowing writers to contribute to subjects' Patreon accounts.
This is when hell started breaking loose. Prominent games journalists and indie developers cried out on twitter that Kotaku and Polygon

Ok. I didn't think this was really going to be anything at first but things started to get very very suspicious... I'll try to provide screenshots for anything I think may be taken down later.
Woke up today and bam see a reddit thread on front page called "One more because I am kind" posted in
/r/JenniferLawrence. That thread is here http://www.reddit.com/r/Jennif.... (SCREENSHOT http://imgur.com/GsGyrs6)When you go to that link now you will notice that the creator of it says deleted. Now this is where it get's interesting. I know and remember who the OP was that created that thread. It was http://www.reddit.com/user/Blu....
But that thread was made over 16 hours ago! How could you remember that guys name?
Because when it was created
/u/BluntMastermind (the OP) wrote in the comments of the "One more because I am kind" (you can see where he posted, they all say deleted now because he deleted his account) was mentioning he was willing to sell portions of the collection. It's hard to tell you exactly what he said but I'm telling you what I remember from memory. It wasn't really THAT long ago anyways.
/u/BluntMastermind also mentioned he wasn't the leaker but he just had the collection, someone shared it with him. What if he was one of the thousands just reposting a picture after it was already posted?
But he wasn't. Somebody called him out on it saying he was getting the pics from 4chan. He posted a reply pretty much showing 4chan's posts of the pic he posted came after his. He used timestamps to back up that he was the real first poster of that specific picture before anyone else. You'll also see the user who called him out on it take it back after he OP replies to him with proof in the comments. (SCREENSHOT http://i.imgur.com/Hj0NREG.png)
Maybe you're not convinced now but keep reading to the very end.
So after seeing BluntMastermind refute claims with timestamp proof it looked like he was really the first person to release that specific Jennifer Lawrence picture.
Even more he mentioned he was willing to sell them. So I PM'd him pretty much asking what's the rate for another celeb's pictures to know if this guy was the real deal.
His reply was "$100 but they're not as good as the others and I might not have all of them. I have 13, 4 full nude." Here's the picture of the reply. (SCREENSHOT http://i.imgur.com/UC6Nu05.png)
I replied back saying ok but I want to see a sample clothed picture and I can't pay in bitcoin.
He didn't respond and I'm pretty sure it was because I mentioned no Bitcoin and maybe he thought I was wasting his time trying to get a freebie (I was wasting his time, I don't have money to pay for what's going to be free shit in a week lol).

Re:*Dons asbestos suit*
Shouldn't be a surprise, after all there's a huge shit-storm going on over zoe quinn as well, with the possibility that she used sexual favors to gain publicity. This of course has led to various sites like kotaku, polygon, etc., to change their reporters handbook. Other various things include reporters giving money to various people, then reporting on them. Reporters shacking up with various people and giving them favorable coverage. Sarkesian much like Quinn, are both bottom feeders of the highest order.

Re:Modern Television Style - Thanks Beyond Product
There are people who shorten these episodes to cut the repeats and some of the filler http://www.reddit.com/r/smyths "These 'Streamline' edits run shorter because they are missing teasers, cartoons, flashbacks, repetition, idents, history lessons, fun facts, "we're experts", and anything else that slows down the show."
I'd be happy to skip teasers, flashbacks, repetitions and idents; but to keep history lessons and fun facts (I don't remember seeing cartoons nor what is "we"re experts")...
Why did they cut these? -
Ah yes, for that we have D
Not to be a fanboy, but: a lot of this stuff makes me think "Ah yes, that's why we have D".
We dream of cleaning up the mess
Yep. D is pleasantly free of the mess.
a direct mapping to hardware plus zero-overhead abstraction
Here, D and C++ differ somewhat. D isn't totally unusable without its trusty garbage-collector, but it's not something that's often done.
Being a fan of range/container algorithms
Andrei Alexandrescu agrees. See also these.
Ranges are a standard thing in D.
I think we should think more about isolating unsafe code in a program than to eliminate it. Putting the necessary unsafe code into a different language limits our control of it, limits what can be communicated to it, and typically imposes overheads.
Precisely why D has a safe subset and the @safe and @trusted attributes.
Of course, D doesn't have compatibility with old C++ code, or even with old D code (that's why there's the ancient-but-stable D 1.0 language).

It's there already...
Isn't this a trend with all app stores now? There's little incentive for any developer to create something only to have it cloned the next day, and have your original app downvoted by the army of the "competition", e.g., http://www.reddit.com/r/gamede.... I'm starting to think there are more "rogue" apps than legit ones.
Many apps use Adware anyway, which is just a backdoor waiting to happen. Do you trust the developer not to sell you to the highest bidder? The information you hold might be more valuable than you think.
Personally, I forgot about the "Smart" in "Smartphone" for a while now. It's not worth the trouble I'll be in, if I get attacked successfully. I know someone who used an online bank app, and had her account hacked into, because she installed an app from an untrusted source. I'm sure you guys know many cases like this. In my view, any app store is an untrusted source nowadays

Re:Not about leverage or influence
Nothing's proving Russia right when there's a wall of evil doings proving the counter. Snowden is one of the few things they can genuinely cling on to.
For all of the US' wrongs there's nothing changing the fact that Russia is an evil empire, well, that's a lie, it's not an empire any more thank god, it just wants to be, but it's still evil.
Let's just look at a few of the things they've done this year alone, let's start near the beginning of the year where the scene is that there is a popular uprising against Russian influenced Yanukovych, during these protests a number of key protesters were abducted by men with accents from Russia itself, some were left to die but managed to live to tell the tale:
http://www.rferl.org/content/u...
http://www.rferl.org/content/u...
Others weren't quite so lucky:
http://www.reddit.com/r/worldn...
The uprising was eventually successful, in response, Russia sent in breach of the Geneva convention soldiers into Crimea posing as civilians and annexed the territory, despite the fact that only a few weeks prior it was clear that there was nothing like majority support for joining Russia:
http://www.cityam.com/blog/139...
Coupled with the unverifiable "poll" and the followon fuckup by Russian bureaucrats in posting the actual results that show there was actually no majority support for joining Russia it became fairly obvious it was an illegal annexation of foreign territory. Of course, it didn't stop there. The Crimean Tatar population that did not want to join Russia have since been treated like Jews in Nazi Germany circa 1939 with their houses being marked:
http://www.turkishpress.com/ne...
Other Tatars have simply been disappeared by death squads:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/maga...
The rest of them? Well, they just get silenced and beaten:
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/...
If this sort of thing doesn't send chills down your spine as to how close it is to the way the Nazis operated then there's something wrong with you.
Since then of course there's been the case of Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine, the debate goes on about whether they're genuinely Ukrainians that want to join Russia, or whether they're simply Russian special forces, or a mix of both, but either way, what's not in dispute is the following and that Russia wholeheartedly supports them:
- They admitted having Buk and shooting down MH17 believing it was a Ukrainian military transport:
http://www.reuters.com/article...
http://www.themalaysianinsider...
- They've been abducting, torturing, and parading civilians:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new...
- They've admitted to carrying out summary executions:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/worl...
- And they've been preventing all males from leaving the warzones they've been part of the

Re:Yet another fiat currency
Now that so many people have mobile phones it makes perfect sense to print less banknotes and use phones as digital wallets.
Perfect sense to the currency issuers and banks, who stand to save on costs associated with the production, transportation and security of physical cash, but less so to the actual users themselves. There are still numerous situations where using physical cash is still superior to digital wallets such as-
Ease of use- there is literally nothing simpler than me handing you the money, you handing me the goods. No fiddling with passwords and praying that the authenticating servers are online. Or worrying about batteries going flat in mobile phones.
Secure medium of storage- Paper money stored properly can last for on average 15 years. I have doubts whether any electronic wallet are as long lasting, not to mention the associated difficulties of maintaining your device, the apps or encountering the horror of corrupted wallets.
Easily divisible- Say my kid needs 10 bucks to buy ice-cream. I peel off a bill and hand it to him. You can't do that with an electronic wallet AFAIK.
My point being that at least in the near future, I see physical cash still playing a major part in our lives.

Apple by far worst e-waste producer
Apple uses the software under it's control to create a faster hardware turnover rate than Windows PC's. Where Windows versions and PC's can last a decade, annual OS X versions only last 4 years and newer versions not supported on older Mac hardware.
Plus Apple has shifted all "Pro" laptops to only Intel CPU graphics and one iMac so far, giving 50% less performance at 18% discount according to ArsTech.
I call out the folks at GreenPeace on this!

Re:Why isn't the U.S. doing things like this?
I think the battery is more like $20k to 30k. I also think the battery will last a LOT longer than 5 years.
Here's a couple of ideas how long:
0.5% battery loss after >30K miles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
93% after 75K miles:
http://www.reddit.com/r/teslam...
I'd be happy going down to say 50% (assuming 200 mile range). I do around 10,000 miles each year, so doing the math, it'll take me over 500 years before I replace the battery. Okay, the sheer lifetime degrades the battery too, but I doubt it will kill it before say, 50 years.
An MOT is just something in the UK we need to have yearly so that a car is legal to drive on the road.
I hope you will now consider that batteries really have improved greatly, and can only better. -

I don't know about all time, but at least for the past few years, I've looked for and never seen anything of the sort. I'm told the company does not automatically register domain names. Additionally, employees with access to the system are restricted in purchasing domain names, and are barred entirely from reselling.

I don't know about other registrars, of course. Be careful.

For those who didn't see the Buzz Aldrin ama
Check this out to see Buzz Aldrin answer questions on Reddit not too long ago The way the guy speaks is a more romanticized version of humanity and space exploration. It is good to see someone still have a positive attitude about things.

Well, at least some people on the MS shell team thought it was better because it would allow them to develop two different shells for regular and advanced users. See: http://www.reddit.com/r/techno... and http://www.reddit.com/user/pwn...

Buzz elaborated on his reasoning yesterday.
Buzz did an AMA yesterday on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/c...
He elaborated a bit on why he thinks NASA should target Mars, and the short version is that NASA is spread thin with a tiny fraction of the budget it once had to venture to the moon. NASA needs a passion project on which they can fire on all cylinders and do something big. We can visit an asteroid, and few will raise an eyebrow. If we go to Mars, it'll be a landmark achievement that the world will make note of. It's a dream that can focus and revitalize the space program, whereas the asteroid visitation is simply aiming too low as the overarching goal for NASA.

Re:Yeah, right.I'm not exactly contributing to the topic at hand, but felt compelled to give a source for your story. It's a reddit post from earlier this year. Here is the relevant portion:
I was once on a US military ship, having breakfast in the wardroom (officers lounge) when the Operations Officer (OPS) walks in. This guy was the definition of NOT a morning person; he's still half asleep, bleary eyed... basically a zombie with a bagel. He sits down across from me to eat his bagel and is just barely conscious. My back is to the outboard side of the ship, and the morning sun is blazing in one of the portholes putting a big bright-ass circle of light right on his barely conscious face. He's squinting and chewing and basically just remembering how to be alive for today. It's painful to watch.
But then zombie-OPS stops chewing, slowly picks up the phone, and dials the bridge. In his well-known I'm-still-totally-asleep voice, he says "heeeey. It's OPS. Could you... shift our barpat... yeah, one six five. Thanks." And puts the phone down. And then he just sits there. Squinting. Waiting.
And then, ever so slowly, I realize that that big blazing spot of sun has begun to slide off the zombie's face and onto the wall behind him. After a moment it clears his face and he blinks slowly a few times and the brilliant beauty of what I've just witnessed begins to overwhelm me. By ordering the bridge to adjust the ship's back-and-forth patrol by about 15 degrees, he's changed our course just enough to reposition the sun off of his face. He's literally just redirected thousands of tons of steel and hundreds of people so that he could get the sun out of his eyes while he eats his bagel. I am in awe.
Cue downmods and comments of "Slashdot has literally become reddit."

Re:interesting times...
Better color eyesight is a disadvantage for hunting and probably military type games where the enemy may hide. Color differentiation is great for picking the right berries, but in hunting, more colors means more visual noise. Since it's a game, women could possibly set their screen colors to simulate deuteranopia (red-green colorblindness) and possibly pick up that advantage.
Example of what camo looks like to color blind: http://facweb.cs.depaul.edu/sg...

Regarding the linked article on Perl...
I'm not going to take sides on 'what language to learn next.' You've not given us enough information on your codebase, the size and nature of your company, etc. I would say a rewrite is as likely to put you out of business than not, but that's ultimately your choice and unless I know all the factors I can't tell you if its a risk worth doing.
Regarding the link you gave on Perl 'ossifying', there was actually a signification discussion on the Perl Reddit about that article which I want to point out:
http://www.reddit.com/r/perl/c...
I would say the website that generated that article seems to be some sort of SEO play (they just have a bunch of articles on stuff that has some interest and controversy) and they stick ads on it. There's nothing mentioned in it that hasn't been mentioned 100K elsewhere (including here on Slashdot).
Perl has pluses and minuses but I've made a good career at it, and most of the code I've worked with is newer (seldom more for 5 or 6 years old), not legacy stuff from before the first dot com bubble. I'll probably make 200K this year, so I can't say its a bad choice. I work with lots of fun people as well. I also like Javascript. If I was starting today I might choose Scala, its a nice clean, fast language with a lot of forward looking concepts. Best of luck whatever you do.

Re:Friends dont let Friends buy Ubisoft - Agreed
Not the impression I got from the Reddit thread that popped up around this issue. All anecdotal, but mostly positive with only 2-3 fps lost and at least one where the fps improved instead.

Re:A truism: Profit is more valuable than charity.
I agree with most of what you say here. My only addition is that it would be nice if Gates and others would address the contribution gap.
What I mean is, there are many millions of minds who never get the chance to contribute to technology due to circumstantial or financial realities. There is no telling how much progress we could be missing out on. I think that Open Source has been a decent if not stellar vehicle for addressing this, and I wish that Bill Gates would just take a few minutes to think about it from that perspective. I believe the last time he spoke about Open Source in an interview, he had the same childlike opinion he had in the 90s, despite Firefox, OpenOffice, et al.
I can't afford to buy the code of Rise of Nations or to buy any sort of licensing for so doing, but I can think of many ways the game could live on. For me, it was the only piece of Microsoftware I ever truly, truly enjoyed.
For awhile we had an Xbox, and then we sold it when we realized we were only using it for Netflix anymore. When he did his AMA, I asked him to open the code and received no response. Surely people were asking him more important questions, but still... It was actually why I made a reddit account, LOL.
But if you ask me, Steve Jobs was by far more evil than Bill has ever thought of being. That's only my opinion. Remember, as Jerry Garcia said, choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil. -
