The Zero Accountability Rumor Mill
As detailed in my last post on this topic, some responsible individual on Reddit named Thirtydegrees decided to give us a little background on what went down (I know it's long but it's worth the read for chronological context).
But wait! We can do better than that! Let's go look at /r/FindBostonBombers to see exactly what happened! Well, you can't. Oddly enough, the founder of that subreddit decided that he should just set it to private (here's a Reddit friendly vulgar meme of my request). Guess what? The founder of findbostonbombers doesn't want to be identified! Bizarre that he/she would create a subreddit devoted to identifying people and then themselves think that it's completely acceptable for their identities to be protected. Should you have a right to know who is accusing you of what? Well, you find out that you have done something wrong ... time to own up to it, right? Right? No! Not in the futuristic amazing world of crowdsourcing!
Also hilarious is that they are saying the bombers have been found. Wrong. Whatever they did, they are still innocent until proven guilty! I am quite upset with everyone dropping the "alleged" word and referring to them as "the bombers" instead of "the suspects." They will get their day in court, that's how this stuff works. That's what lead to all the bad stuff that happened in /r/findbostonbombers. They went straight from "we have images that our untrained eye finds suspicious" straight to "these are the guys who killed innocent people, help us identify them and harass their families."
We live in an era of digital lynch mobs. -

I'm there at Mechanical Turk *right now*
Seriously -- it's in my other tab. I was finding some delays in the net, so I opened
/. to see if AWS was being ddosd, but nothing came up. But *this* did. As an MT worker since 2009 -- but not using it extensively until last June, due to downsizing -- I can speak to the truly abysmal rate of pay available here. However, it *is* from home, and there is *always something* 24 hours a day, so as long as you are willing to dip in and out of the pool, you can generate a tiny flow of money -- better than nothing. I use HitsWorthTurkingFor, Mturk Forum, and -- of course -- the FireFox extension no good Turker is without, TurkOpticon. It's a living -- kind of, but not really. I've made $2.38 in the last hour. Meh. -
I'm not surprised
I'm not surprised. It can be bad enough when they actually know what they're doing, if they have no clue it can be terrible.
There is an amazing story on Reddit (in 23 short parts!) of an IT manager from hell destroying a workplace. It's frustrating just to read.

There's a limited amount you can do at work
Assuming a standard office layout, there are a few things you can do to tweak your fitness quotient a bit, but it's mostly through harm reduction rather than positive benefits. Don't smoke, avoid junk food, stand and walk around. Consider a standing desk, use stairs, manage your stress, work sensible hours, walk somewhere for lunch. Incorporate walking in your commute, consider moving to where a healthier lifestyle is a matter of course, not a decision to be made daily.
But the realities of human physiological response to training stimulus means that intensity matters, and you're simply not going to reach appropriate levels of stimulation at the office without radically changing your workspace and creating a considerable distraction and disruption for those around you.
The good news is that an effective workout can be packed into a short time -- 20 - 60 minutes -- and a few workouts a week can make a significant difference in health and appearance. The biggest hurdle for most people is sorting out good information from bad on diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Pointers I like to put in front of folks include Liam Rosen's "Beginners' Health & Fitness Guide, the Reddit Fitness FAQ, and books such as The New Rules of Lifting. A healthy diet and a solid 8 hours of nightly sleep are your foundation. A good a strength training routine, and HIIT cardio can fit inside a 20-60 minute workout period.
The best tools are relatively simple: a barbell, plates, rack stand or power cage, and a basic piece of cardio: your body, a barbell, kettlebells, a jump rope, a rowing machine (and if you're going to row, that's among the best technique videos out there).
That said, few offices are optimized for deadlifts, kettlebell swings, Oly lifting, or Tabata erging sessions. Whether you build it or buy it, a gym is a worthwhile investment. Consider it a workshop for improving and sustaining your body.

Bitcointip is interesting - it only works on reddit, but the idea is that only people tipping need to get accounts. If you got tipped enough, then you can bother figuring out what bitcoins are and either cashing them out or spending them and you have money already.

Re:Setting aside the porn thing for the moment...
"By all means, let's make rules that discourage violence against everyone - childredn, the elderly, women, men, pets, gingers, neckbeards," pretty clearly trivializes the specific problem of violence against women, and implies that the same laws that handle the (nonexistent) problem of violence against "neckbeards" are somehow sufficient to deal with the pervasive problem of violence against women.
Actually, I've witnessed a good friend of mine who self-identifies as a neckbeard get beaten up by some loser at a bar for sitting in the wrong place. I mean, Reddit has
/r/neckbeardrights, for goodness' sake. Did you mean to disparage the neckbeard community? Are you so callous as to ignore the problem of violence against neckbeards... on Slashdot, no less? Are individual neckbeards less important than individual women? Should there be laws that punish crimes against female neckbeards (they must exist) extra, extra harshly? In all seriousness, the fact that people are being violently victimized is the problem. As far as the law is concerned, the sex, hair colour, or facial hair configuration of the victim should not make any difference.
Man beats woman? The crime is (probably) assault/battery, not assault/battery-against-a-female. Neckbeard stomped by jock? There should not be elevated penalties for the jock because he dared target a valuable system administrator. The crime is the crime and penalties should be established based on the crime, not the characteristics of the victim.
When society starts putting ranking groups of people based on who is more likely to be a victim, or deciding who should be punished more based on who they are, we are on the road to legally untouchable government officials and caste-style segregation. Either individuals have common rights and common justice or we're all screwed.
It's not very productive to read what you want to read instead of what was actually posted.
I'm all for making laws that deal with specific situations in which violence (against X, Y, or Z) crop up, and I said so.
I don't see where, unless you mean "Violence typically occurs where society needs new rules and new norms." If by that you meant "I believe that specific laws are needed to deal with violence against women" you chose a pretty unclear way of expressing that idea (especially in the context of your last sentence...)
Second-last sentence. Maybe not the height of eloquence, but it's there. And no, tossing a silly example in there doesn't invalidate anything else I said.

Re:Naivete kills !!
It's redditors fault. They're such dickhead hipster fucks that he killed himself out of grief at what they turned his beloved site into
http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/19pwgc/i_dont_tip/c8qbpec
Then upvote it. then shut the fuck up, cunt.
I'm getting damn sick of people saying "this comment is best" or "I came here to say this" to try to karma whore. get fucked. No one gives a shit who said it, stop trying to jump on the upvotes train by pretending you came up with the exact same clever thing. Upvote what the other person said and get over it.
This entire website and it's stupid memetic "[FIXED]" posts and the "I see your X and raise you Y," are fucking retarded. Not to mention the whole fuckload of stupid shit where people post this "faith in humanity restored" hippie-dip-bleeding-heart bull shit. This isn't Facebook, I come here to read interesting content, not sit through endless fuckhead attention whores posting "LIKE IF YOU CARE ABOUT CANCER, IF YOU DON'T LIKE I'LL COMMIT SUICIDE" go fucking commit suicide then. Stupid bunch of whiny teenage girls cutting themselves on tumblr, hit an artery and bleed to death. No one will give a shit.
Goddamn it fat people and whiny teenage girls and stupid "feels" people are ruining this goddamn website. People upvote total cunt shit, inane bullshit inspirational posts and whatever other bullshit they can find, including ass-tarded memes. AskReddit has begun to circle, Funny has turned into "cute pictures of mushrooms that look like smiley faces that no one gives a dead horse's last shit about", and politics is 1,000,000 users sucking Barack Obama's dick and making fun of Repubicans. Yeah we get the point. What a bunch of dumbass cunts. or dumb ass-cunts. I really don't care. Romney and Obama were both shit.
No wonder the guy who invented this website shot himself, he had to watch his dream overrun and destroyed by 5 million whiny left-wing-eurofags (oh dont even get me started on the "merica" bullshit. you cunts think we're all fat? cool story, have fun sucking your uppity pussies and running out of money because you can't compete in the global economy anymore). I don't blame him in the least; spending time on this website makes me want to commit suicide too. The stupid upvotes-suck-my-circlejerk-ass-liberal-cunt-woman-feminazi-friendzone-cute-bullshit-sympathy-emo-vagina-dickass-gore posts need to fucking STOP. I believe in free speech but honestly I wish this website would be taken down by the government. You're all fucking abominations to society.
It's all true too. It reminds me of Weev's quote on bloggers
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/magazine/03trolls-t.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
I first met Weev in an online chat room that I visited while staying at Fortuny's house. "I hack, I ruin, I make piles of money," he boasted. "I make people afraid for their lives." On the phone that night, Weev displayed a misanthropy far harsher than Fortuny's. "Trolling is basically Internet eugenics," he said, his voice pitching up like a jet engine on the runway. "I want everyone off the Internet. Bloggers are filth. They need to be destroyed. Blogging gives the illusion of participation to a bunch of retards. . . . We need to put these people in the oven!"

Re:Wrong lesson.
I decided to pre-order SimCity and I have definitely been annoyed by their server issues, but I decided to track down for myself as much info as I could about what's going on.
1) All of the servers seem to be running on Amazon EC2 (or other AWS type services). This is what gives them their different zones. Fun enough, most of the communication seems to just be a HTTP API, and they aren't doing any type of UDP streaming of data. Sadly I haven't been able to MITM the encrypted stuff yet to see what's going on with transferring of game state data.
2) While EA/Maxis's official PR lines have been pretty quiet, a few of the Maxis dev staff have been posting what they can. Here are a few links around information they have been sharing:
One of their server guys: https://twitter.com/derricks
Maxis Employees on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/user/ryani and http://www.reddit.com/user/MaxisMC (they have been posting at least a little).3) They are trying to gather as much feedback as possible to find out where people are having the most problems to get those issues fixed.
With this game being so reliant on their servers, they should have done a few stress test weekends, but sadly, they decided not to do that and EA's customers are now stress testing on a live setup. I'm sure engineering didn't want to do it this way, but that's how it ended up happening.

Letter to Rep. Lance Gooden
You can send a similar one from here: http://www.house.state.tx.us/members/member-page/email/?district=4&session=83 Representative Gooden, I am writing to alert you to public opinion that is forming about your new HB912. A consensus is bubbling up on internet forums that your intention in drafting this bill was to protect corporations like Columbia from incidents similar to the Oak Cliff pig blood dumping which resulted in criminal charges. I have not found any post yet that interprets this new bill as protecting the privacy of individual citizens. I know that this was not your intention and I urge you to take action by retracting the bill and releasing a clarifying statement. Regards, Terbeaux Nou P.S. Re:Linux?
FreeBSD might have probably become the dominant Free Unix-based OS on IBM-compatible PCs, and GNU Hurd might have gotten much more traction than it has today. The BSDs operated under the cloud of a lawsuit from Unix System Labs until 1995, which was long enough for Linux to become dominant. Work on the Hurd is anemic these days largely because of Linux, of which even Richard Stallman says that "finishing it is not crucial".

Re:beta?

The ban was not due to his post!
As he updated today, again on Reddit:
It turns out however, that EA is having really bad technical issues and managed to accidentally ban several users. The cause, they credit, is something to do with the email opt-out. (Which explains why I did not receive information regarding the ban)
Always On DRM is still a reason not to buy the game, as is buggy account management. However, the day-long Slashdot lag is providing only half the story.
-
Re:Except it isn't their latest game.
Sure, if that's what happened. EA has reversed the ban and is chalking it up to a bug.
I.E. Nothing to see here, move along.

Just as expected
This is similar to what I've said earlier (eerily similar, in fact..).
The issues the original article raise are either false or silly, and just glancing at the JS code could tell you that.
However, there are some other potential issues with the code I noticed, and at least one of them have proven to be a problem.
I look forward to knowledgeable people looking through the site and report what they find, and hopefully Mega fixing the problems found. Right now I trust them slightly more than for example Dropbox, for no other reason that they need a bit of effort to get your data (and probably in a way you can notice / avoid if you're vigilant), instead of it happening by accident. Also, their whole legal and business defense rides on them not being (trivially) able to do that, so it's in their own best interest to keep things working properly.

Re:The greedy are not trustworthy
There's actually a long list of reasons why mandatory labels for foods containing GE crops are wrong (I don't feel like typing it out for the umpteenth time, but if you are interested, here is a good overview of why labeling should not be mandatory), but yeah, Monsanto ect are mostly concerned with people not buying products derived from their seed out of irrational fear. Dumb corporate bastards missed a great opportunity to educate people on plant science, crop genetics, and the benefits of biotechnology.
-
Re:No taxation without representation ...
It's actually traditionally democrats who want to ban violent video games. A list of notables would include Jack Thompson, Janet Reno, Hillary Clinton, and recently Joe Biden.
On reddit you'll generally read that Rush Limbaugh is the mouthpiece of the republican party (debatable of course) and you'll also read that he has defended violent video games numerous times in the past.
https://pay.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/150a0t/of_all_people_rush_limbaugh_just_defended_video/
As a direct answer to your question: all the time. I honestly haven't met one who doesn't, violent ones included.
What you're noticing is a situation where somebody who doesn't participate in a particular activity wants to tell others "Thou shall not do that. I don't, and you shouldn't either. You don't need firearms and you don't need video games. They will hurt you." This is a similar situation to the politicians who were trying to push SOPA, a number of whom (on both sides) literally take pride in the fact that they haven't used a computer.
Fringe (or not? depends who you ask) groups run into this all the time. For example, many here are a small minority (myself included) when they want to e.g. watch their blu-rays on XBMC. Incumbent politicians sit in the "I don't do that, so you don't need to" category. Too many people are afraid of that which they don't understand (currently the big one is assault rifles, which in my (professionally trained) opinion are less dangerous than your garden variety pistol.) There's also buckyballs, which apparently are now too dangerous for anybody to be allowed to buy or sell.
These kneejerk bans are bullshit and they need to stop.
