The Ogg files were on average 5.5% larger. But you cannot conclude from the fact that Ogg scored 4.59 and AAC 4.26 that "Ogg was only 7.7% better", that's not how it works. The scoring is on a ordinal scale, not a ratio scale. The conclusion you're supposed to draw from the test is that you have 95% confidence that people perceive the 135kbps Ogg files to be superior to the 128kbps AAC files (note the confidence intervals). Whether you think 5% bigger files is a good tradeoff for files that most people percieve to be better is up to you. Again, the test is not meant to show how much better the codecs are, relative to each other.
Also note that most people cannot distinguish the 134kbps Lame files from the 128kbps AAC files, their confidence intervals overlap for a big part.

Open Source Courseware
Rice University in Houston, TX has started a new "Connexions" project. The basic idea is that professors can post freely-available lectures, homework-sets, and eventually entire courses. In Rice's CS program, some professors teach their entire courses from Connexions. The materials are released under the Creative Commons license.

BSD developers never heeded Mr. Raymond's lesson and insisted that centralized models lead to 'cleaner code.' Any achievements that BSD managed to make were nullified by the BSD license, which allows corporations and coders alike to reap profits without reciprocating the goodwill of open-source. Fortunately, Linux is not prone to this exploitation, as it is licensed under the GPL.

...but not with off-the-shelf solutions. See the research of Dan Wallach, Rice University (my alma mater). He's been doing some research on baysian methods of determining a wireless node's location based on its signal strength at multiple APs. Surprisingly robust, even in the face of people maliciously modulating their signal strength, et al. See his work here. Remeber, it's still in the research stage: but if you could implement it on a large scale, you'd make a pretty penny doing so!

MIT & Peer-to-Peer
When someone from MIT says peer-to-peer is a good thing, he's talking about peer-to-peer as an architecture. He does not mean "KaZaA 0wnz!! fr33 pr0n = 1337!!!!111oneoneone." People are interested in peer-to-peer for reasons other than file-sharing because they're scalable architectures that can handle load balancing very well, and have no central point of failure.
Most peer-to-peer research in universities regards creating better, faster Distributed Hash Tables, or DHTs for short. Typically, for N nodes on an overlay network connected by a DHT, insertion and queries come at log(N) cost. MIT has one of the best, called Chord. Some DHTs are very fragile and their routing topology can "break" when under extreme churn (when a flash of nodes suddenly join or leave the network), or malicious nodes attempt to manipulate other nodes' routing tables by creating fake identities (see the Sybil attack) -- Chord has been shown to be very resistant to both. Other notables are Kademlia from NYU (which is under the hood of eMule), and Pastry from Rice (Microsoft collaborated).
MIT has done some pioneering research in DHTs, and they have a lot of great minds on it. I'm making my own peer-to-peer program (hopefully it will be ready in a few months) and it will incorporate quite a few of the ideas they've developed. One of their ideas that I find particularly interesting (and I think should be incorporated into BitTorrent, because it seems like the perfect application) is called Vivaldi. You can read for yourself on how it works, but when applying it to BitTorrent, basicially the tracker would give you peers it thinks you have a low ping time to, as opposed to a random list which may be sub-optimal.
They're also involved in Project IRIS, which aims to develop a decentralized Internet infrastructure using all the latest DHT technology. It's funded indirectly through -- gasp -- the government via the NSF.
So yeah, don't just think that MIT is jumping on the bandwagon. They've been on the bleeding edge for some time.

(COSTP) - The California Open Source Textbook Project has been collaborating with Wikipedia on a K-12 (public high school) World History project. The project is based on California State Board of Education Framework standards.
The idea is to create a pilot basd on strict curriculum framework adherence, as this is the **only** way to get **any** state board of education to approve the end product for local school district use.
I would encourage anyone who is expert in World History to contribute to this project here Wikipedia World History Project
The goal of this project is to prove the concept. Once that's done, may other curriculum areas can be constructed - including those that deviate from curriculum frameworks.
A further goal is to have the resulting files generate a 'print-on-demand' file because the end product should be a printed text.
COSTP has shown that the cost of an open source K-12 (printed)textbook (hardcover)is 40-50% cheaper than K-12 textbooks published and distributed by commercial publishers.
Lastly, if you want to contribute content to the project, please contribute *only* your own (original)work. Content that is already copyrighted is not welcome/ We want to show State Boards of Education that open source textbook publishing can save the states - collectively - *billions* of dollars. e.g. California spends $400M+ every year on K-12 textbooks, with prices having risen at three times the rate of inflation since 1992.
COSTP is an official collaborator with Creative Commons, and was a recent participant in forging the Creative Commons educational license. Also, we hope in the future to work with the Connexions Project at Rice University, to get further tests piloted.

Yes, precautions developing nanotech are important, but the potential benefits to everyone are tremendous. We need to be supporting this type of research, not running around encouraging the ignorant to demonstrate and complain about how worried they are.
This exact attitude is why there is a shortage of nuclear power in the US, which could have been replacing the polluting coal and oil plants over the last 20 years.
California didn't institute rolling blackouts because they thought it was convenient, it was because of the NIMBY lobby and vocal ignorant masses pushing legislation that made it impracticle to build ANY kind of power plant. Surprise, surprise, there is then an energy crisis on the left coast.
Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. There are plenty of folks, such as the CBEN studying nanotech to ensure safety. We don't need to raise a public outcry.

Eratosthenes of Cyrene?
Greek astronomers had figured out that the Earth was round several centuries before Cladius
Eratosthenes for example is often credited with measuring the earth with a stick, a pretty accurate measure of it's circumference. For him to do this B.C. he would have already got the idea the earth was a sphere earlier, or atleast want to use what he knew about geometry to prove the theory.
Now there were much in the way of educated Greeks, in fact I believe one of the earlier versions of the christian bibles was in Greek. I believe also, at least according to my catholic upbringing, it was translated into Latin simply because a hell of alot more people were literate in Latin. But whether Greek or Latin... it was seen by comon folk that someone who knew either or was smart, or at least literate. I imagine this is why it sounds better to say intelligent a word with Latin roots then smart which likely has Germanic orgins.

Music Analysis Toolkit
A friend of mine was working on the Music Analysis Toolkit (MAT) while he was still thinking of pursuing his Ph.D. in Computer Science. The toolkit does just this kind of music recognition stuff, and he was working a lot with the psychoacoustic model and using LAME to filter out inaudible stuff. It's been a while since I've talked with him about it, but it's definately interesting.
I'd be willing to bet this is based on lots of the same stuff. -

not to mention the destroyed reputation...
Reputation is irrelevant because SCO is playing an end-game. Caldera's hopes for a viable company ended with Project Monterey and the head of that company left for better things. The original SCO took their one viable product and changed their name to Tarantella, selling off their unprofitable ventures -- and their old name -- to what is now SCO. The Canopy Group looked over what was left and determined that it was not possible to make a real company out of it, so they hired Darl and turned it into a litigation/stock manipulation factory with just enough real product to maintain the illusion of credibility for the gullible. What is now "SCO" is expendable, expected to have zero value when the game is done.The insiders are getting wealthy off of stock options and the lawyers are making a bundle off the legal wranglings. Left holding the bag are the stockholders and investors, notably Baystar, whose $50 million investment has lost more than half its original value already. The options are part of the problem, since they dilute the stock, and the loss of reputation and the court case will finish off the rest.
In the end, SCO will lose its court cases as expected and declare bankruptcy. The companies officers and lawyers will walk away with piles of cash and the remaining IP and products (yes, SCO has some IP and products) will be sold off to the highest bidder. But this all looks like it was part of the plan to extract money from a company which could no longer produce a viable business.

As personal rivalries took precedence over a quality product, BSD's codebase became worse and worse. As we all know, incompatibilities between each BSD distribution make code sharing an arduous task. Research conducted at MIT found BSD's filesystem implementation to be "very poorly performing." Even BSD's acclaimed TCP/IP stack has lagged behind, according to this study.
Problems with BSD's codebase were compounded by fundamental flaws in the BSD design approach. As argued by Eric Raymond in his watershed essay, The Cathedral and the Bazaar, rapid, decentralized development models are inherently superior to slow, centralized ones in software development. BSD developers never heeded Mr. Raymond's lesson and insisted that centralized models lead to 'cleaner code.' Don't believe their hype - BSD's development model has significantly impaired its progress. Any achievements that BSD managed to make were nullified by the BSD license, which allows corporations and coders alike to reap profits without reciprocating the goodwill of open-source. Fortunately, Linux is not prone to this exploitation, as it is licensed under the GPL.
The failure of BSD culminated in the resignation of Jordan Hubbard and Michael Smith from the FreeBSD core team. They both believed that FreeBSD had long lost its earlier vitality. Like an empire in decline, BSD had become bureaucratic and stagnant. As Linux gains market share and as BSD sinks deeper into the mire of decay, their parting addresses will resound as fitting eulogies to BSD's demise. -

You need to read a book on signals. You sound like an idiot (you made some other nonsense claims in an earlier post).
Mathematically (forget scopes for a second), one can reconstruct a bandwidth limited continuous function perfectly (exactly) from anything more than 2 samples per hertz. Anything greater than 2 samples (2.00000000000000000001 samples for example, 3 samples, 4 samples) is enough to reconstruct a continuous signal. You don't need 5 or 10 or 20.

You need to learn the math about signal reconstruction. Hint: you don't reconstruct a sampled signal by connecting the samples with lines (though this is one way to do it, you have already discovered it is limited) Instead, you feed the samples through a general reconstruction which you can derive. The ideal reconstruction function requires an indeterminate amount of data from the future which means that it cannot be used for realtime processing applications. There are other reconstruction formulas that are well suited to realtime or computing constrained applications. You should look at the Proakis book or some other good signal processing book for information. -
