Re:1984
That reminds me of Shadowrun, myself. Well, aside from all the magic, dragons, elves, orks, and trolls and what have you. Well, trolls of the horned and dangerous sense, that is.
Just wait, the corporations will take over! -
Re:RIP FASAThe game is a lumbering pile of steaming poo.
That being said, WizKids and FanPro (the current purveyors of the PNP Shadowrun) have NOTHING to do with this game. In fact, Rob Boyle, the lead developer of the SR line at WK/FanPro, has a warning up on the official Shadowrun site that lets you know it is only "loosely" based on any type of previous Shadowrun developments.

Re:Shadowrun looks weak...
Shadowrun isn't the sequel to Shadowgate. Shadowrun refers to the line of cyberpunk games (especially tabletop games) of the same name made by FASA. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun, or http://www.shadowrunrpg.com/resources/faq.shtml). I'm suprised that they are even making a next gen shadowrun game, much less have it featured in the E3 conference because I've always thought shadowrun had only cult popularity.

More than that...
Good grief....D&D...D&D...GURPS...D&D.....
You make it sound like the only books coming out for pen-and-paper gaming are D&D and GURPS supplements. There's a lot more than that in the past 6 months.
Here's a few new releases that seem to have flown beneath /.'s radar:
- Exalted 2nd Edition - http://www.white-wolf.com/exalted/index.php
- Weapons of the Gods - http://www.eos-press.com/products-wotg.html
- True20 from Green Ronin - http://true20.com/
- Shadowrun 4th Edition - http://www.shadowrunrpg.com/
- Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition - http://www.mutantsandmasterminds.com/
All excellent books. I suggest taking a look. -
Re:Long live Shadowrun
I love Shadowrun, but I'd argue that Johnny Mnemonic (the film) is more true to Gibson's vision of the future than Shadowrun. First, I've read the Sprawl and Bridge trilogies and a few other Gibson pieces and I've never seen mention of orks, trolls, or magical Native Americans. Then there's the inescapable fact that Johnny Mnemonic is based on a short story by the same name written by Gibson himself, no matter how far off course the film producers may have strayed.
Also, apparently Fanpro changed the SR dice rules for Fourth Edition. Before you get torqued, check out their website for the rules; as I recall they were actually a pretty ingenious improvement.

Would have some utility
There's no way in the world I'd voluntarily put an RFID implant under my skin. As others have pointed out, there are just too many downsides. However, there is one upside nobody has mentioned. The next time you go to a Shadowrun convention, you'll be afforded tremendous respect and deference. "That's the dude who is ACTUALLY CHIPPED!" they'll whisper, as they stride down the corridors of the Airport Hilton, black dusters swirling in the dry, vaguely stale air.

Must not be paying attention
It's a first-person shooter based on an old paper RPG of the same name from a couple decades ago.
A couple decades ago? Ahh, I guess that explains this. -
Re:This isn't anything new!
And yes, somebody will eventually rip off themes from William Gibson's books to create new works of fiction.
Done. -
Re:It's the hardware...Isn't there a system in the brain that keeps messages from getting from the motor cortex to actual muscles during dreams? We might eventually be able to hack into that system in some way, no?
That's pretty much the assumption in the Shadowrun RPG's "Matrix" system. When you jack in, a system called ASIST feeds all the sensory information to your brain, while something called an "RAS override" prevents you from flopping about or getting up to walk away (though a person can intentionally fight those systems, in case they need to move from their current spot a bit).

Monofilament Whip
Excellent, one step closer in developing my Monofilament Whip.

Are there any girls there?
"...Because if there are, I want to do them!" In all seriousness though: I ditched D&D for Shadowrun years ago. No alignment, no classes, more detailed setting and the ability to easily present much more diverse situations were all reasons.

Re:Or, if this doesn't interest you
As long as we're on the subject of RPGs, Shadowrun is my favorite, and it contains lots of corporate espionage and worse.
As a matter of fact, the world is getting closer and closer to the corporate world in Shadowrun every day. -
Re:Complete nonsense
People, these tags are readable up to a few inches. Maybe a foot at most.
From this site: "The majority of RFID transponders have a read range of less than 3 feet." That's a long enough range to surreptitiously scan people walking by a hidden transceiver on the sidewalk, or to do drivebys of your trash.
Do you use credit? Do you have a license? SIN? Bank card? Trust me, you have more things to worry about being tracked by than your stupid library purchases.
That's bizarre comparison. Those are all things that I have some level of control over. I chose to let someone know by credit card number (by using it). If I don't want someone to know my credit card number, I pay cash. If someone demands to see my driver's license, I consider if I really need the service.
Come to think of it, where do you live that you purchase things from your local library? I just borrow them.
Also, "SIN"? Who in the hell actually calls them SINs? I think you've been playing too much Shadowrun. The only non-silly uses of SIN I can find are things no human being would have (Standard/Stock/Service Inventory/Identification Number).

Re:Dupe, but makes you think...
The world is looking more and more like the world in Shadowrun every day.

Re:I have no D&D experience...
Yes... no
I mean, yes, the GM is pretty damn important, but a good group is what makes the game. A good GM with a bunch of bad players won't have a good time, although the players might. A bunch of good players with a bad GM might have a reasonably good time interacting with each other but as a whole won't have much enjoyment. And a single bad player can make hell for everyone.
The best is to have players and GM that fit together, with about the same level of experience/expertise, and the same tastes. Monty Haul campaigns are fine, as long as everybody loves Monty Haul campaigns. Same goes for munchkins.
And, well, sincerly, the only reason to play D&D 3rd is because it's the best hack'n'slash munchkining game ever. If I want to roleplay, I'll pick Tribe 8, RoleMaster, Shadowrun, or an Anime-level Sengoku campaign with BESM rules, any day of the week.
Okay, I'm done whoring

Shadowrun Reference!!
Whenever I can I try to bring in a Shadowrun Reference. Hopefully without glasses, and hopefully soon they'll eliminate the box, and then eliminate the viewing angle and we'll have the wonderful world of trideo that will revolutionize TV viewing!
Oh wait, same crap, new dimension.
"3 Dimensions and not a damn thing to watch." *rimshot* *tomato splat*
