Re:$51 is expensive?
I'm also wondering when or why Sony got into the ISP business.

Therapeutic 'doll therapy' for dementia seems the most accepted by the medical community and is still controversial, there are other therapeutic studies going on, but I only a spent minute or two googling.

Re:Let's not forget the malfeasants
There is no need to hack Windows Mobile 5/6 because anyone who wants to write apps for it already can. Windows Mobile is by definition more "Open" than the iphone is, and yes there is already a web server out there for Windows Mobile CEHTTP. I 1st came across it over a year ago.

Re:Thanks for posting
You do make good points, I should have been more concise.
The parallel I was attempting to draw between Prohibition and the proposed censoring bill was that going overboard is practiced by not only the government, but also people. The population elected to have Prohibition, and that idea fell spectacularly on its face. A total ban on censorship is IMHO another idea that would fail. Oh, and in regards to your beer comments, guess you haven't lived in Texas. :P
My comment on Shintoism was not well formed either. I understand that Shintoism is more of a cultural idealolgy than a religous one, but it was definitely turned that way in the lead up to WWII. The institution of emperor worship, the requirement of the population to register at temples etc. are proof of this sidetracking of the religion. The reason I pointed out that the aforemention thinking was attacked is stated in the Postdam Declaration, section 10, and bad pun intended, religously discouraged by McArthur. Furthermore, as I understand it, the Marshall plan did NOT apply to Japan, but merely Europe. -
Re:So what...
Where on earth are you looking? I can find 100M fiber lines (depending on where you live-some places only have 70M down/30M up for that price on fiber) in Japan. look at this for a better idea (this is Sony's ISP, though, but don't let that give you a bias or anything...)

Re: Shooters Shooters, everywhere...
Shmups are a popular indie genre in Japan, at least 50% of the indie ("dojin") games are shmups. Some are freeware like Kenta Cho's games, Cho Ren Sha and Galax. For the rest you can go through Palet or Himeya (Dojin section), look for games in the catalog and paste the name of the game or developer into Google, often there are playable demos available.

Re:PC games are
I have a few gigabytes of games that offer quick gameplay and aren't available on the Mac. From an old list I compiled for an earlier thread:
Cho Ren Sha 68k (shmup)
Kenta Cho's games (mostly shmups)
Destruction Desire (fighting game)
Mind Arms (fighting game)
Galax (Shmup)
Doukutsu Monogatari (platformer)
Every Extend (kamikaze'em up)
Glace (platformer)
Frontline (sidescrolling shooter)
Minebot (... Action?) -
Re:Little hard to get in there...
You should have watch the host homepage instead, which also comes with more 'accessible' case mods.

Re:Slashvertisement
I should keep the list somewhere...

Japan doesn't agree with you. Or the EU.
Funny, small but cute characters don't seem to be a problem in Japan.
Quit taking such a US-centric view of the market. Given the realities of the declining economy, and the increasing trend towards humanization of technology interfaces, perhaps a penguin is the right move after all. -
old news
Check out http://plyojump.com and its accompanying blog for very good summaries on Japanese humanoid robot developments. ( the site seems to be down at the moment, but google cache helps )
QRIO was presented already back in august, at Robodex2003. QRIO is a direct followup, "production release" for previous development codenamed SDR-4XII.
There were other bots presented at Robodex, that were able to perform jumps and even somersaults.
The most interesting two IMO, are not megacorps entertainment bots ASIMO, AIBO etc, but humanoids that are of practical use or very low-budget, like HRP-II that is able to drive a backhoe, remotely assisted
And other one, SILF developed by a single person ( student ? ) on obviosly quite a low budget. Still, the bot is able to perform jumps. -
Excellent Solution
On my Japanese-model Clie, the following applications make an excellent solution.
KDIC)
Shareware dictionary front-end.
WWWJDIC
Free Japanese-English/English-Japanese dictionaries
Radic
Look up kanjis by radical, for when you don't know the pronunciation.
PocketKanji
Draw simpler kanjis in a box and have them recognized.
All of these together make for a pretty great and complete solution whenever I am reading or writing Japanese.
It boggles my mind that people are saying "you should learn the language instead of using a dictionary". One of the best ways to learn a language is by reading, and no matter how many hours you spend in a classroom, you WILL eventually run into a word you don't know and can't intuit. -
old news
Here in Japan, 80% of the country has access fiber to the door and 100Mbps connections for under $40 a month.
And we have video on demand over ip. -

Re:Damn these sites (or, my mouse has spoiled me)I cross-referenced your post. Hope this helps!
I've got one of those Intellimouse Explorers (the huge silver ones with the superfluous tail light and like three extra buttons; well, what the hell, here's a http://www.microsoft.com/Mouse/explorer.htm link) and sites that won't let you back out are an incredible annoyance. See, two of the buttons on there serve as Forward/Back (respectively) while browsing the web, and after about 20 minutes of using them, I was hooked. You wouldn't believe how simple (and remarkably intuitive) to navigate with your thumb. Now if I could just find a good use for those buttons in Half-Life... I mean, sure, it's easy enough to hold down the back button and select the page before the offending site, but that would require moving my cursor over six or so linear inches of desktop space. Isn't that just a little bit unreasonable? No? Ah well.
