If the software allows it, would it make it easier to simply set up a schedule that allows for connectivity between 9:00am and 11:00am on Sundays?

This may be an excellent option, provided they can either learn to modify the schedule on their own, or count on a techie type to be there for them when they're needed...

Maybe he's taken some time off from work, where he's not getting paid for not working.

To me, it almost sounds like you wouldn't hire anyone because you've got a negative attitude as to why they're looking for work in the first place. Do you honestly believe that people don't have legitimate reasons for looking for a new, possibly better, job? I left my last job because my boss pretty much refused to listen to what anyone else had to say, in addition to being overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated. That, and I found it difficult to work with a coworker whose work ethic was terrible. Does that sound like the sort of place where you would like to work? Probably not. Although I can understand that your thoughts may apply to some people, I can assure you, they don't apply to everyone.

...Theoretically, a machine doesn't CARE the race/gender/whatever of the applicant...

True enough. However, a machine also doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, the way we (most anyhow) do. So, theoretically, a machine can be programmed to filter out certain data based on information provided. This could be the age, race, gender, or whatever else, of an applicant. Also, the machine itself may not do the hiring, but merely suggest who may be more qualified for the job, or present the information to those who do the hiring, who in turn may decide that an underqualified individual would be more desirable than a properly qualified one, due to discrimination.

...Their machine was broken. Take it at face value...

They can't be too interested in hiring anybody if their only means of accepting applications is broken. If they can't be bothered to fix it, maybe they can't be bothered to keep their employees happy. Hard to say really, as I don't know the company/store or any of their employees.

...Believe it or not, you don't have a right to be given a job - only the right not to be denied a job based on certain characteristics...

Exactly. I'd rather hire someone who's qualified, rather than someone who demands to be given the job because they want it.

My boss expects me to program PHP scripts for websites while dealing with customers, computers, and phone calls. Getting a significant block of code done without distractions is virtually impossible. Even though I manage to come in under/on budget, the actual timeframe between starting and finishing a project is much longer than is necessary.

As for commenting my code, it depends on where I'm at with my project. Usually at the start of it, my comments are fairly clear, though as the project drags on, the more I'm inclined to not even bother with them. Between pressure from the boss and a distaste for the project, I'll forego the comments and hope that the code is self explanatory...

The KVM device instead is connected to the network. You can do pretty much anything you could do if you were right in front of the machine, other than physically swap media or hit the reset button. I wouldn't mind getting something like this for my home network, but I think the prices are a bit expensive for my budget right now.
