Re:Gasp of surprise (not)
Something Awful had a tidbit a couple of days ago about the crack baby scare for a new generation. One such example was the "Counter-Strike baby.":
"The restaurants of the future will be forced to feature illegible menus that cater to these Counter-Strike babies, adversely effecting the rest of us:
WTF!!! TEH CAMPIN LAMA RESTARANT/ MEUNU: DINNAR: WTF!!!

In all seriousness, I don't think playing video games makes you stupid or anti-social. Playing video games excessively might do (probably does) these things. But doing most anything excessively often has such negative consequences. Studying physics 12 hours a day will make you stupid and anti-social. Sure, you'll know all about physics, but you're missing that key phrase "well-rounded." -

Re:Another great site in this vein...
SA is the king of online sarcastic humor. Back when Lowtax was working on it 7/52 and it was able to financially support him (before GameFan went under), it was at a level of hilarity that has never been rivaled in this universe... Rich Kyanka is a funny guy, and his real personality seems to be down to earth and reasonable as well. And for those of you who've never visited SA before, be SURE to check out http://www.somethingawful.com/jeffk.

Web comics/web logs
If this could be made to work reliably, consider what it would do for sites like Penny Arcade or Something Awful. Sites like these are expensive to run because of the cost of bandwidth. If you decentralize the distribution, you could spread the bandwidth cost between all the users. Since most users pay a flat rate for their internet connection, in most cases the distributed cost would be $0. And since he's no longer paying for hosting, Lowtax could afford a better haircut.

Re:Won't complain...Unfortunately, I don't think advertising will save a lot of internet sites. What mainstream advertiser would want their name assosciated with a site like Something Awful?
No I believe that the future of supporting web sites is Micropayments. It's clear that advertising makes for content that is worse, as evidenced by the enormous discrepancy between the quality of network tv, and premium channels such as HBO.

Re:bad weekend [SomethingAwful]pipeb0mb typed: T'was horrible. No slashdot...no SomethingAwful
SomethingAwful.com went down because of reasons not related to the OSDN outage... Their host burnt out a hard disk because of power problems. SomethingAwful isn't connected to the OSDN network in any way. (It was actually part of eFront until that scam collapsed.) SA is back up now, as are several other sites affected by the same problem.
(This does not mean I represent OSDN or SA, because I don't - I just know what's up on the SA side of things.)

Who cares?I mean seriously. How many times is a "crazy case" a story?
once?
or do you want the palm pilot version?
I mean, yeah. You can make cases out of cool stuff. I guess the reason I'm pissed is cuz people are submitting real important items and they're getting rejected.

Re:No Experience? No Problem!
If you take the route of mod-maker to get your foot in the door, hire a lawyer if and when you're offered a job. I'm not 'in the biz', but I would imagine if you let yourself get all starry-eyed at the chance of working with the Disco Pirate himself, you'd be more prone to signing away the lives of your children and grandchildren.

Cliff Yablonski Rules!!!!
If you haven't checked it out yet, make sure to spend some time in the Jeff K and Cliff Yablonski sections.

Cliff Yablonski Hates You is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on the internet. Found it off of Cruel.com. Check this out. (http://www.somethingawful.com/cliff/ihateyou/ for the goatse.cs weary)

Don't forget Jeff K.
How can you say there aren't any gaming sites left except for GameSpot? Jeff K. is the leading provider in game content and news. It isn't unusual for him to scoop bluesnews, and his comics are much better than Penny Arcade's. He interviews big gaming celebrities like Cliffy B and John Carmack.
He also reviews the PC games that matter, and wrote a brilliant editorial on the upcoming console wars. -
Re:Don't forget...You know, I really can't stand GameSpy, and I'm not alone. Two years ago, my feelings were different. They employed some very cool people, had some cool sites, and released cool software. The they slowly started to suck more and more ass, and their two best people (Fragmaster from planethalflife.com and Lowtax from planetquake.com) left under bad circumstances. These days, their PlanetEverything sites (10 more added every hour!) are of astoundingly bad quality, lacking almost any actual content and run by complete amateurs. Their software is bloated and slow; back to in-game server lists for me and many others. They're really nothing but a bad joke at this point.
FYI, Lowtax went off and created SomethingAwful, and while he's had horrendously bad luck with various hosting networks, the site is pretty cool. If you haven't checked it out yet, make sure to spend some time in the Jeff K and Cliff Yablonski sections.
:-) Lowtax was also able to bring along one of my favorite parts of PQ, Cranky Steve's map reviews. The reviews aren't done by Lowtax anymore and are lacking in quality, but it's a nice blast from the past. (Even if this past is just two years ago.)Coincidentally, Lowtax recentally brought the afore-mentioned Fragmaster on board as a guest editor. Now if only Frags would resurrect Walter.
;-)GameSpy's only redeeming value is FilePlanet. I know a lot of people here hate it, and I agree that the format and bandwidth suck, but I usually have better luck downloading from FilePlanet than anywhere else.

Re:1st or 4th Amendment: Choose One
It seems that over the internet we either get to protect our 1st amendment rights with opt-out or our 4th amendment rights with opt-in. Is there a way to protect both?
How does opt-out protect First Amendment rights? I seem to recall that the First Amendment says that the government can't interfere with your right to say what you please. That does not mean that you're guaranteed a place to say it. Oh, sure, you have the right to free assembly. That doesn't mean you have to right to fill up a person's mailbox (electronic and snail) with crap until that person tells you not to do it.
You want free speech? Get a web page, and post all your blatherings there. Take a look at Something Awful's Awful Link of the Day archive to see what kind of spew is available on the web.

[ Space ] Posted by wh03v3r on Mon April 16, 12:26 AM
from the nice, but too bad it isn't mp3 dept.
pipeb0mb writes: "This article details how to build your own space shuttle from Radio Shack parts, obtain permission to fly it and get many lucrative endorsements, all for less than $200 USD! There is also an interview with the creator of this masterful plan (sorry, Windows Media). Already, dozens of universities and non-profit organizations have used this technology for fund raising, research and businesses that help further the space program, and thus humanity as a whole. Cool!" Too bad it's not MP3. -
This shit isn't new
Why don't you look here or here or here? This isn't anything close to upping the ante... more like adding more people to the table. somethingawful and rotten both know that they generate traffic at the expense of someone else's misfortune. But so does cnn.com and abcnews.com. hotornot does not purposely try to humiliate people. when used legitmately, it provides a forum for people WHO WANT others to survey them. as for illigitmate posters, well, that will happen on any interactive system. hotornot at least takes some measure to prevent that. look at slashdot; there are plenty of bad trolls who post anti-semetic or racist jokes at the expense of those who have suffered tragedies involving antisemitism or racism. should slashdot be shut down because other people are assholes? probably not.

Re:Tentative Series Titles
After the Zero Wing animated gif bounced around the internet, a thread began in the Something Awful message boards where people added lines from the game to various images. This started the craze of putting "ALL YOUR BASE" etc. to every picture imaginable that spread across the net. The Laziest Men on Mars, also from Something Awful, even made it into a song, which was later attached to a Flash compendium of sorts.
