Re:Gestalt Theory?
It's closer to the fact that the brain does in wetware to compensate for relatively poor sensory instruments it has access to.
The brain is remarkably powerful, but the human sensory organs are relatively primitive - the eyes have lower resolution than even a modern day smartphone camera, the ears are relatively terrible, and all around as a species, we don't have the greatest senses.
But to compensate, the brain is remarkably powerful. It has a stupidly powerful sensor-fusion complex (merging multiple senses together to form a cohesive image of the world around us), the vision system is remarkably complex and has direct access to the motor control system (your eyes dart around rapidly, so even though the resolution ix low, the fact that the eyes are rapidly scanning around let the brain generate a larger detailed image of the world). The ears are powered by memory so even if you can't hear something clearly, you can make it out.
Of course, the fact that all this is done in the brain equivalent of software means it's easy to trick - we call them optical or aural illusions, and even this is a form of it - the brain expects a thud, so you experience the thud, even if the ears don't actually hear it. It's just like the brain will compensate for the blind spot in the eye by interpolating around.
Here's the audio illusion that'll break your brain - https://soundcloud.com/whyy-th...
And if you don't believe it, feel free to hit play again and re-listen to the gibberish...

Re:WTF? Were you not paying attention?
Yes, and the push towards it is coming from the Left wing and Academia. Trump is a push back against it.
You have to explain this to progressives. Trump was elected for two things: Gutting the piss out of the republican party(aka neocons and RINO's out), by people on the left, center and right. And pushing back against the bullshit they've been pushing for 35 years, which has grown far worse in the last 20 years. Democrats on the other hand just voted in a new leader who's pushing more of the same(Obama/Clinton) identity politics rationals. I'll also remind democrats/progressives that during the lead-up for the race, you had open racists proclaiming that their job was to "shut white people down" as part of their reasoning to be elected for leadership.
And if you are a progressive and think that you guys aren't causing problems in society or academia? You only need to look to Canada, where a TA was put through circus because she dared to show neutrality and both sides of an argument in class. That's the bullshit academia is pushing and it's that same post-modernist garbage that's used to label someone a "nazi" or "literally hitler" for wrong-think. You can listen to the entire circus here if you want. It's very much worth the listen to.

Re:It's news because it gets eyeballs
It's being run by billionares like the Koch bros et al. It is not being masterminded by a few female community college professors who would like it very much if you'd stop hitting on them thank you very much. If you're a white man you're correct that you're getting the short end of the straw, but you're rage is misdirected. What's worse it's mostly directed against people who want to help you economically.
The Koch bro's aren't the ones funding those university programs blaming white men for the imaginary wage gap, screeching that the patriarchy(aka men) is causing all of societies ills, and then going out of their way to try and make the justice system less equal by removing "being judged by ones peers" and replacing it with "listen and believe" with sexual harassment.
They're just as bad, in some cases worse. It was those feminist community college professors that pushed hard on C-16 in Canada aka the "trans name bill" which was just used as a basis to shut down discussion on the university campus of Wilfrid Laurier. In short: Jordan Peterson was right.

I've been playing with this for a long time now
Well, a few months anyway. My "songs" (well, machine learning neural network) are here, if anyone wants to listen to them. The Char-RNN creates all the lyrics, song titles, and notes. I was particularly amused by the song title "I'm Almost Human" https://soundcloud.com/user-34... The data file feeding the NN was of death metal lyrics. The tunes are far too happy to match (I'm not a musician, and only working with a limited set of free
.MIDI instruments/tools) but the actual lyrics (not printed on the site) are pretty dark/esoteric/weird (as to be expected by a Neural Network) -
Re:Great idea let's invest there
it would likely become a lot more stable if the world suddenly found a serious self-interest in making it so.
This whole thing could go either way. The solar panels could become a recourse curse. Also, world interest could also give perverse incentive to back up dictators. War Collage had a interesting (albeit cynical) podcast on this.

Re:Fake accounts and SPAM
Maybe...
But when a different person likes your track every 10 days like clockwork... too much of a coincidence.
Just look at the dates. And look at the "people" who liked my track:
https://soundcloud.com/daphneg...
https://soundcloud.com/nicolem...Same person in profile photos, just different image.
All those users have a very similar amount of "following" (a bit over 1000) and no other activity except for following and likes.
They're bots, all right.

Re:Hate crimes increased after election
This is not a credible source.
Ok. Their data is largely anecdotal. FBI has national data but has only released up to 2015. Some local municipalities have released current data. Here's one I could find:
“We’ve had an uptick in hate crimes—actually a little bit more than an uptick,” he said. “We’re up 31% from last year. We had at this time last year 250; this year we have 328. Specifically against the Muslim population in New York City, we went up from 12 to 25. And anti-Semitic is up, too, by 9% from 102 to 111.

Re:Fucking useless
Up until Windows Vista, MIDI was handled by the hardware or the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth or whatever flavor of softsynth you had (like Timidity,) the browser just used whatever you had selected as your MIDI device. That option has been removed, now, so in Windows, you're stuck with whatever shitty GS they have unless you use another media player that can allow soft-loading of soundfonts (yay, AIMP2!)
Example of what MIDI can really do - https://soundcloud.com/technic...

Re:Steve Bannon, not a racist?
Just in case other people haven't done this:
Here's the Washington Post article which talks about the interview:
https://www.washingtonpost.com...And here's the actual, AUDIO of the interview so you can hear him in literally his own words saying this:
https://soundcloud.com/breitba...Next time you're "genuinely curious" about something, do bother to read the article carefully. See the underlined words? They indicate "links" which is a way of connecting web pages together. If you clicked on the VERY FIRST link marked "an interview", you'd have come to the actual interview.
Of course, before I call someone a racist against Asians (I had heard he was a racist against other minorities from other comments) I wanted proof. So, before I settled that opinion to my own satisfaction, I CHECKED by reading the article and following the links to the ACTUAL FACTS. So now I know, Brannon's an equal opportunity racist (or I guess white nationalist). Now that I think of it, you're probably one too and just trolling by pretending to be "generally curious"
-
Re:Does not follow?
The correct interview was done on November 5. The fuller context starts at 16:30 with the more specific comments being made at about 17:30ish.
Setup: Trump, talking about immigration and H1B visas, explains his desire to retain non-American graduates of the best schools and letting them create jobs. He asks Bannon if he agrees with that.
Well, I got a tougher...
You know, when two-thirds or three-quarters of the CEOs in Silicon Valley are from South Asia or from Asia...
I think that, that...
on, on, occa[sion]
on my point is that a country is more like a [sessions? sections?]
A country’s more than an economy.
We’re a civic society.
I wanna see
[Trump interrupts.]Could the CEOs remark simply be an example of convenience? That is, he did not intend to denigrate Asians, but rather point to the tech industry as an example where non-citizens have a lot of power? It might follow that if non-citizens have a large amount of control it could be dangerous to our larger society. Hence, he seems to imply a call for "tougher" immigration laws.
That's a non-racist interpretation that could be the case. I would really need to know more about the guy to make that judgment though.

Get Real
Grampa was a pimp so daddy joined the Ku Klux Klan.
You spoil your boy rotten cause you've only got small hands.
Don't tell us 'bout your daughter, how you'd love to do her too
Cause your wife's a visa cheat with a resume as fake as you.
Only your ghostwriter knows you, and he says he faked your book.
So you abuse your pageant winner like your grandpa's got you on a hook.
You're a four time bankrupt even when you fake a school. Crash that casino, no one loses money like the way you do.
You hate our Constitution, can't stand to see it wave.
At heart you hate our country, may God somehow see her saved.
It's time to get real, time you realise,
A mourning mother speaks out with the courage in her eyes.
Get real you ballbreaker, time to just get real.
You're just the mob's bigot butler, you sorry venal heel.
You're ugly on the inside, you're fake and you're a sham.
You've just poisoned what you've touched with those tiny little hands.

Afraid not, we have copies of a lot of damning stuff thanks to Podesta. And just for comedy, it's coming out that this new FBI investigation came about because they were investigating Democratic Rep. Anthony Wiener (the infamous sexter) who recently divorced Huma Abedin, one of Hillary's closest aids.
But if the objective is to connect emails-Benghazi and conflate the two in votersâ(TM) minds (which consultants feel is an imperative here), Iâ(TM)m not sure we know whether we can credibly do that
Subject: Fwd: POTUS on HRC emails
we need to clean this up - he has emails from her - they do not say state.gov[Redacted] indicated he had been contacted by [Kennedy], Undersecretary of State, who had asked his assistance in altering the e-mail's classification in exchange for a 'quid pro quo,'
Source (n.b. this is from FBI, not Wikileaks).
The DKIM signatures also say the emails are unmodified and signed by hillaryclinton.com. Feel free to validate them yourselves.
Just for bonus points, here's Hillary talking about how they should've rigged the Palestinian elections.
Listen to Hillary talking about rigging those elections here.
This is a tiny sample from a huge list of damaging emails, too.
There's never been a better time to vote 3rd party.

Re:Affirmative action for Conservatives
People may want to hear what Glenn actually said on his radio show last Friday, and again for a little bit on Monday. It's really quite an interesting hour of radio; Glenn was slamming other "conservatives" at the meeting for suggesting affirmative-action-like policies, was very impressed with Mr. Zuckerberg's goals, and was in 100% full support of Facebook being allowed to do whatever it wanted - it is, after all, a private company.

Bitwig + Renoise
I use Bitwig Studio and Renoise as my DAW's of choice. Hard to beat really I use a Scarlett 2i4 and have a bunch of hardware . Arturia Beatstep , Korg minikeys , Waldorf Blofeld. Never had any issues getting it to work I use Ubuntu for the desktop. Neither DAW are open source but both have a thriving community
.I'm happy to support vendors that support Linux. You can hear some of my stuff here. http://www.soundcloud.com/poly... No Mac or windows machines were used on any of my tracks. -
Re:Don't bother.
I feel bad responding to a first post troll but wrong is just wrong. I'm an amateur musician in the Olympic sense (I've never been paid for it in a meaningful way). It turns out you can do incredible things with a Linux desktop and just as much (if not more) with a Linux recording setup. Now, would I suggest using a Linux set up when trying to collaborate with other musicians? No. Sounds like a terrible plan. Can you record decent sounding multitrack stuff on your own with the right equipment? Absolutely.

It's not music that most people will like but it was recorded completely using a fedora studio spin. It can be done. -
Re:Nice!
if you cant post your "dissenting opinion" without "threatening people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability or disease", then you have some issues you need to work on.
Ok, lets talk about what they claim, and how this will go down in reality. Because Twitter has a really bad track record of saying one thing and enforcing another.
For example. There is a delightful young transwoman named Sarah Nyberg who has been harassing gamers on twitter for months now. (But that's ok, because harassing neuroatypical white males is socially acceptable. Especially if they're overweight and straight, too.)
Sarah Nyberg is a pedophile. She openly admits this. She also openly admits that she took photos of her 8 year old niece in her underwear and shared them online. She openly admits that doing so gave her an erection.
She admits all of this, but that it was ok because some people were rude to her and that's somehow worse.
TALKING about this, due to Sarah Nyberg being part of the SJW clique, results in you being mass-reported by a botnet and your account auto-locked by Twitter's algorithms until you delete the "harassing" posts.
The people doing this openly brag about doing this. Twitter does not care.
Twitter can post all the fluff pieces about how this is going to combat trolls and harassers they want. People who have been the victim of this passive agressive "crybullying" know that the authoritarian nutjobs involved claim any disagreement with their socio-political views is "harassment" or "Cyberviolence" and that Twitter apparently agrees with them.

Jealous
Because if the Earth warms a few degrees, the most desirable solution is to flee to a frozen, airless, lifeless wasteland without enough gravity to maintain healthy bones and muscles. This is *clearly* preferable to relocating a bit further North/inland on Earth.
If only we could all afford to confine ourselves permanently inside small hermetically sealed habitats on Mars, forever inundated with the comforting sound of life support machinery! But alas, physics forbids such a utopian dream.
I shall nobly volunteer to stay behind on Earth, rather than deprive my betters of the life they deserve on Mars.

Re:Wait, what?
The only way that this will change, is when musicians follow the path of software developers. Release your work for free on the Internet and good work will get noticed. Good artists will build a profile then can then start charging for their work.
There's no reason why Artists can't deal with the likes of Spotify or Apple Music directly, but unlike developers who tend to be smarter than average, artists tend to be at the stupid end of the spectrum, and hence will continue to be taken advantage of.
I think the change has already taken place. Except for a very tiny slice of working artists, the old corporate label model has been dead for some time. Because innovators gonna innovate.

Re:Corporate media doesn't act in public's interes
What you call "the slow way" is called journalism. Journalism, like scientific work or any other work worth doing, takes time to do. There are plenty of examples of independent journalism being done well, some have already been shared in this thread by others. Here are some more that come to mind: Democracy Now!, NOW with Bill Moyers and Bill Moyers Journal were both quite well done and worth watching reruns/archives (moreso the Journal), CounterPunch, Harry Shearer's weekly Le Show, and The Real News. All of these focus on issues of importance, get more deeply into those issues via interviews with those who have studied the topic in-depth via investigative journalism and those who work in the field, and leave you with pointers to more information you can study yourself. I'm sure there are so many more examples of this work being done well I didn't list but don't let that stop you from trying various sources and reading books (paper books, not DRM'd proprietary-driven computer-based readers that track you, threaten to cut off your reading, or deny you the other freedoms paper grants). You won't agree with everything you see, hear, and read but the point isn't to manufacture your consent, it's to get you thinking critically about the world outside the allowable limits of debate so often featured in mainstream coverage.

Le Show and The Big Uneasy are both excellent
By which you're referring to "Le Show" which covers items in the news and his very well researched documentary "The Big Uneasy" which shows how the Army Corps of Engineers made Hurricane Katrina far worse than it would have been and evades responsibility throughout. Speaking of showing, Shearer backs up his points by quoting and interviewing experts in the relevant fields of discussion and by quoting published hypocrisy from those in power. That's far more backing for his points than I see you giving your views which purport to know what he thinks. In short, you apparently don't think he's funny or insightful but "without actual good context" for anyone to see your views as anything but a name-calling accusation.

Re:uh - by design?
"you need PCIe or Thunderbolt if you want to have a few hundred tracks and still have under 5 milliseconds latency"
That's what a mixer board is for and even ASIO drivers don't provide sub 5ms latency. The only thing on this planet providing sub 5ms latency are direct connections from instrument to IEMs, and even then you have to deal with things like comb filtering.
Yamaha has a good piece on this and I'd take their word well over Avid's, given Yamaha has been in this game FAR longer, starting with musical instruments back in 1887, versus Avid's 1984 starting date.
