Re: And when do they start training their replacem
There's an open source platform, BOTS, that you may want to look into before you get too far. http://bots.sourceforge.net/en... It has a bit of a learning curve, but we use it to send and receive tens of thousands of 214s a day. We also send and receive 204, 210, 990, 997, 850, 855 as well as invoking carrier-specific webservices. We also use BOTS for just FTPing files from here to there, because its self-monitoring with auto-retry. It's pretty much the only functional OSS EDI solution but its way better than rolling your own. The only real downside to it is its main processing engine is a singleton, but that wouldn't be an issue unless you were processing tremendous amounts of EDI. In any case, it's better than rolling your own solution.

Re:It's not what I call a scripting language.
There's grep for Windows, as well as many other useful unix/linux utilities.

Re:Not going to work...
So the only legal way for you to acquire that 20 year old game is to wait another 70 years or more
No - resale is perfectly legal. And I can find it used for ~$38. However, I already have a large backlog of games to play. I'm waiting out to see if GoG gets rights to it and can release it. Even if the original artists don't get compensated this way, at least the rights-holder gets the message that this is a game people will still pay for (there is a nearly 7,000 strong wishlist vote on GoG now).
The Neverhood doesn't even run correctly on XP, since it requires 8-bit color and palette changes and is not very compatible. There are two ways to play it on modern systems - The Neverhood Restoration Project and ScummVM.

Just reformat it to your liking.
My preferred coding style happens to be Whitesmiths. (Go ahead and laugh, but I'm used to it.)
Since not much new stuff outside of my own is written in Whitesmith's style, I use astyle to reformat the the other guy's code if I'm going to be studying it or adding to it or whatever. I actually have astyle fully integrated into both Geany and vim (the two code editors that I use) so I can reformat code instantly on demand.
I've never paid much attention to comment styles as such, but I'm sure that you can use astyle to reformat that if you want to; it has a million-and-one options available to put out all sorts of cats and make coffee.
So if Linus or anyone else doesn't like a C style, it takes almost no effort to reformat it to the style that you want. Then everyone gets to look at and use what he's comfortable with, and there's no friction at all.

Re: Can somebody mod down Dalilama's bullshit?
You keep bringing up ads... I don't put ads on my sites. I develop web based applications for businesses, with the odd small business and community organization websites sprinkled in.
I've written a script that sits between static files and the web (or a CDN depending on the project) to automatically optimize all of these things for me, so I don't even have to think about it anymore, it just does it automatically.
The script also optimizes images (with optipng, jpegoptim, etc). It even goes as far to do image scaling based on a GET parameter (eg. ?scale=WxH) using ImageMagick. It automatically caches the optimized files and serves them up. It watches the file modified time of the original files to ensure whenever a change is made, the cached optimized files are updated on demand as well.

Heck, even if you want to get an equivalent of MS Paint
OMFG!!! You're holding-out MS Paint as an example of "Software not available on the Mac"????
Seriously?!? I've used MS Paint for years, and believe you, me, I wouldn't hold it up as a shining example of ANYTHING...
Besides, this Search seems to show SEVERAL highly-rated Freeware examples of Paintbox software for OS X. In fact, the first one I looked-at from that MacUpdate search, "Paintbrush" is not only Open Source and Free, but is pretty-much an equivalent to MS Paint. So, What's YOUR problem that you can't seem to find anything suitable?
And BTW, NEWSFLASH: NOT EVERY PIECE OF SOFTWARE HAS TO COST ZERO DOLLARS TO BE WORTHWHILE!!!
If someone feels like they deserve $5, $10, or $20, AND YOU LIKE THE SOFTWARE, FFS, PUT A CROWBAR IN YOUR WALLET!!! Most of those companies have a Free Trial period, anyway (something I admit that really do wish that ANY of the "App Stores" (regardless of platform) would start allowing, though)
But, Damn! Even Pixelmator, which is a DAMN sight more full-featured than MS Paint (and in fact, is closer to The Gimp or Photoshop), is only $30, and it has a Free Trial. -

Apparently the Keepass website has ads, and if he switched the update check over to https, the website would be visitable over https as well, and if https was used on the website, the ads wouldn't be displayed. Or something like that:

Re:They don't know what they're talking about
First of all, here is RMS's take on this question. I should point out that I do not agree with his analysis.
As a counter example, I like people to consider NDISwrapper. No one in their right mind would claim that just because the user linked a proprietary closed source network driver with a GPL implementation of NDIS, that somehow turns the driver written by Broadcom for Windows into a derivative of the Linux kernel.
When I consulted to clients about the issue, I suggested the following criteria, under the claim that it is not industry standard, but it is defendable in court:
- How stable the API you are relying on?
- How documented is it? In other words, how much do you need to see the source in order to understand how to use it?
- How many different independent implementations are there of the same API? (even if all of them are also GPL)
I claim that these are good criteria to explaining how independent are the APIs from their implementation, and accordingly, how much copyright protection they deserve.

Not only that, but we've already had the debate on interfaces/APIs and GPL.

We already have a nice FOSS VB replacement: Gambas.
If Basic is your thing, you should use that.
-
Go old-skool/Please SpecifyThis is hardly worth asking, as is, for example: http://misterhouse.sourceforge...
Digging deeper, it depends:- How much automation and how sophisticated?
- Do you want remote control via app, via SMS or no remote control?
- There isn't a 'cloud', there are several, including a server that you spin up and own
- Do you want X10 (ugh, but well-known), Wifi or Bluetooth to communicate or get locked into something proprietary?
- What's your skill level for software and/or electronics?
- Do you want it to hook up with Echo/Nest and other cloudy components?
So the rest of the misunderstanding in this question is to do with clear-ish requirements and specification. If you want it to hook up with Amazon or Google stuff, you're probably heading for the (one of the) 'commercial clouds' and some lock-in, for example. Personally I'm an anti-lock-in, anti-proprietary-cloud nazi, I do not feel that Amazon, Google and Microsoft are my friends and have my best interests at heart.

Sigh...
A decade ago, I wrote a socks server and posted it to Sourceforge. It does exactly what it says it will do, and it was so good and convenient that malware authors found it to be a useful payload to drop on machines to get a backdoor into them. So then virus scanners flagged it as malware, and sourceforge trusts those, and then they deleted the current version of the binary. Now that page has big scary warnings about software that plainly does what it says with all the source there to prove it (see it for yourself - https://sourceforge.net/projec... ).
I know these guys are trying to win back trust, but trust is hard. Trusting heuristic based scanners is optimistic. Making allegations about software and its authors on the basis of a heuristic can be downright offensive.
(Along similar lines, chocolatey is now flagging my directory enumerator because one out of 57 virus scanners heuristically thought crawling a disk is suspicious - https://www.virustotal.com/en/...

Re:Filezilla
It may depend on what OS you're using right now. On this Mac I am seeing no link to SourceForge here: https://filezilla-project.org/... . I've checked on Windows as well but not Linux. You can always download it from SourceForge as we do not allow FileZilla to bundle anymore: https://sourceforge.net/projec...

Re:Example?
All current live projects have rectified any issues with malware due to us notifying them except for this Demo Project we created: https://sourceforge.net/projec... . Here is an older version of PDF Creator that shows the warning: https://sourceforge.net/projec... (automatic downloading disabled and notice about possible malware). Keep in mind this is an older version of their project and their current project here is fine: https://sourceforge.net/projec...

Re:So how do you open ZIP files these days?
They have not fixed it, and the developer says he won't.
I guess you didn't read all the way to the end of TFA, where it states that both vulnerabilities were addressed in v16.00. Also, see Igor Pavlov's reply to a post on this exact question in the v16.00 announcement, where he explicitly states that both bugs have been fixed in v16.00. So your second assertion, "the developer says he won't", is false. To be fair, I haven't seen confirmation of the fix by independent security researchers, so if you have support for your first assertion, "They have not fixed it", I'm sure we'd all be interested in seeing it.
He gave some excuse about not being able to tell what the target of the drop point was until the extraction was done. I believe it was bullshit in 2010, and it's almost certainly bullshit now.
https://sourceforge.net/p/seve...
Your link is to some problem with how Windows Explorer reports drag-and-drop targets to the source application. From the Talos analysis, the two vulnerabilities in question appear to be unrelated to Windows Explorer drag-and-drop. Did you link to the wrong old post?
I haven't manually coded a Windows Explorer drag-and-drop in nearly a decade, so I don't remember enough about it to tell if Igor's response in your link qualifies as "bullshit". Normally, I would go refresh my knowledge of the relevant COM interfaces, but your post already appears to be off base, so I'd say the onus is on you to cite the MSDN documentation supporting your accusation of "bullshit".

Re:Cable Too Greedy!
I'll chime in as another "$240?!?" voice here, because whittling that number down a bit can certainly be done. First off, you can purchase your own cable box outright. My cable company charges $20/month for a standard box, and $36/month for a DVR box. these boxes will pay for themselves in less than a year, and by law, your cable company must make a Cablecard available for you. If you're a DIY type like me, you can pick up one of these and use it with either Windows 7 (it's the only OS that supports all the DRM necessary for some of the ultra-premium channels) or Mythbuntu (free and formally supports that card) in a PC build. More expensive for sure, but even it will pay for itself in less than two years, especially if you have one Mythbuntu backend and use Raspberry Pis as frontends. Assuming three cable boxes and a DVR that are replaced with this setup and you buy new parts for the back end, you'll spend about $800 and two Saturday afternoons configuring it all, while my cable company would charge me $912 for the same service. The two caveats I'll fully admit is that the cable company's Video on Demand probably won't work, which may or may not be important to you - and I've got no idea how Pay-Per-View works (UFC fights, etc.), and also that the cable company may charge a fee to rent the CableCard (mine costs $2/month) while only providing support for the CableCard - you're responsible for the functionality of your own box.
Another thing I've done to save money is to get rid of their telephone service. Ooma costs me about $5 a month, plus $40 for the number port. They have their own handsets, or you can use units that will work with the base directly. They've been around for a while, and I couldn't be happier.
Finally, buy your own modem. That's $5-$10/month right there.
This has been Voyager529's guide on saving a bunch of money on your cable bill.

of course we backed up the source
and put it on sites like sourceforge!

someone put it on github, but that is too SJW for me.
SCOOP is always been about being a platform.

Re:shut up before you kill us all
"You have a link that shows the text of the actual deleted JE and not just the comments [slashdot.org]?"
Yes, it's called download the source code that runs this site (it's FREELY AVAILABLE) and read the code your damned self, if you understand programming.
If you do not, then you need to shut the fuck up and let those that do understand the code speak, because you are utterly full of shit.
Here's your source - https://sourceforge.net/projec...
Feel free to download and prove me wrong if you actually have any programming chops.

Re:Interpreted languages should cease
Like the java virtual machine, for which you compile to BYTE CODE!!!1!
Serpent, maybe?
Serpent is a real-time scripting language inspired by Python but completely reimplemented to support real-time garbage collection and multiple instances of the virtual machines running on independent threads.

Re:Real reason
A bootable USB stick with Linux on it can analyse the disk with tripwire, if you can get something past that, your dealing with NSA/CIA level skills at a minimum.

Link to which the GHCN data from NOAA, or the source code and analysis that you can easily do for yourself.

Re:Eliminate git, move back to cvs
RCS?! Bah!
You young whippersnappers and your newfangled toys! SCCS is the true Source Code Control System. Everything else is just a 'wanna be'. Just ask Jörg, he still maintains a fork. I bet he keeps a copy of the code on , if you'd like a look at it.
Now get off my ... uhh ... square patch of green stuff, there. -
Re:Technology and Australia
Andrew was forced to do it, because nobody else in the world had the same problem. Australia is just that bad.
Here is an old talk from him:
"So the core of rsync is this algorithm that I call the rsync algorithm. And it solves this problem, the remote update problem. Now the remote update problem is basically: you have two computers connected by a very high latency, very low bandwidth link... a typical Internet link, at least if you're in Australia. So, a piece of wet string, a really pathetic link... and you've got two files."http://olstrans.sourceforge.ne...
If you prefer to hear him talk about rsync instead of reading, there are recordings of that talk as well. I'm sure you can search for it.

Re:Congrats Slashdot!
On the other hand, the old DICEy overlords at Sourceforge can't even keep their https working, at least for prdownloads.sourceforge.net.

Monumentally Stupid Question
What is a photo organizer for?
"For organizing your photos, you dullard."
Yeah, but what's it for ?
Seriously, I don't get it. I have a pile of a few thousand (gack!) photos sitting in well-known directories. Except for the ones from a very old phone, they all still have their original filenames and datestamps. Every so often, I let one of these "photo organizers" loose on the lot, and the only evident result is a gallery of thumbnails. Great; now I have double the number of image files to manage (original plus thumbnails).
"Well, you can organize them by category." Okay, how is the initial categorization done? Or do I have to invent (and remember) my own taxonomy of tags, and apply them to each photo in turn? Assuming I go to that trouble, is this metadata portable in the event I decide to change to another organizer?
"Well, you can create custom slideshows by selecting photos by category or individually." Uh, all right, vaguely useful. But given how incredibly rarely I do that, I could accomplish the same thing by launching Geeqie on a directory full of softlinks.
"Well, you can also edit your photos as you review them in the organizer..." Uh, no. Now you're no longer a photo organizer, but an image editor with an index. No thanks; I don't load images into an editor unless I plan on actually editing them. Fewer accidents happen that way.
I guess what I'm really asking is: What sorts of things do you do with your photos that makes a photo organizer an indispensable tool? How do you use the organizer to make your work easier?

Re:If I remember right transmission is also includ
Transmission started on the Mac. You really think that a couple $k for tools is a big deal to those with a job?
TL;DR: Geez Louise, cuntcheese, if you don't know what you're talking about...don't say it!
Just hits me as a tad odd that a program supplied as a default Linux program - that does the same thing, shares the same name, and not hit a copyright wall; so suspect as an update.
All said and done it would appear my concerns a non issue. I just came across Transmission included in the excellent program "Portable Apps" https://sourceforge.net/projec... . Not as isolated as I tended to believe; many checks and balances.

Re:Hearing aids
Actually, I have been involved in open source biosensor projects such as ECG and EEG that are still in the development stage. There are others out there: http://openeeg.sourceforge.net... Also, open source and profit are not mutually exclusive.
