Re:How much more of this will people take?
Heh. Good luck with that.
Last time it was attempted, nobody wanted it.
Hell, you can run AmigaOS in UAE, or download AROS if you want that experience. Nobody else seems to.

Microsoft gets huge payments from the NSA?
It appears to me that Microsoft is selling itself to secret U.S. government agencies. Who tried to kill the excellent TrueCrypt? The old original TrueCrypt web site pushes people toward a Microsoft product.
Can Microsoft be trusted? Here are some articles:
Windows 8: NSA Backdoor Exploit in Windows 8 Uncovered (Aug. 22, 2013)
Windows: NSA "backdoor" mandates lead to a computer-security FREAK show Quote: "Microsoft Windows OS vulnerable to hackers, thanks to National Security Agency requirements." (March 6, 2015)
Windows: NSA Built Back Door In All Windows Software by 1999 (June 7, 2013)
Windows 10, Microsoft hiding what it is doing: Microsoft has no plans to tell us what's in Windows patches. Quote: "Each update is a black box, and it's going to stay that way." (Aug 21, 2015)
Windows 10, Microsoft takes even more control: Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do -- here's how to opt out But, of course, Microsoft can change the spyware to avoid blocking. (July 31, 2015)
Microsoft can't be trusted: How Can Any Company Ever Trust Microsoft Again? (June 17, 2013)
Microsoft releases EXTREMELY buggy software: Microsoft Kills Many Critical Flaws, Some 0-Days, Un-Trusts One Wildcard Cert It is likely that there are many bugs Microsoft hasn't yet found. Are Microsoft products intentionally made insecure? (December 9, 2015) -

Re:Easy compiz in Mint
In case that AC that posted that didn't see the reply in the original thread - this is *not* Compiz but it's damned awesome looking.
http://eaglemode.sourceforge.n...
Watch the video. The source and/or installers are at the site. It is nifty looking. I keep getting tempted to install it but I'm not sure if it will end up playing with the DE or not - I don't think it does. I have to say, it's the closest to the mental image I have in my head for the ideal (but probably unrealistic) DE. Just watch the video, it's fascinating even if you don't use it.
Err... If anyone does use it, lemme know how it went and if it broke anything. 'Cause I wanna play too. Meh, then again, I guess I can just fire up a VM and go for it.

You have ZERO for math accomplishments
See subject - your lack of response satified that so how about CS related accomplishments? ZERO TOO? Here's SOME of mine (you've done earlier, more, & better?? PROVE IT!):
----
Windows NT Magazine (now Windows IT Pro) April 1997 "BACK OFFICE PERFORMANCE" issue, page 61
(&, for work done for EEC Systems/SuperSpeed.com on PAID CONTRACT (writing portions of their SuperCache program increasing its performance by up to 40% via my work) albeit, for their SuperDisk & HOW TO APPLY IT, took them to a finalist position @ MS Tech Ed, two years in a row 2000-2002, in its HARDEST CATEGORY: SQLServer Performance Enhancement).
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, 1997, "Top Freeware & Shareware of the Year" issue page 210, #1/first entry in fact (my work is there)
PC-WELT FEB 1998 - page 84, again, my work is featured there
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, WINTER 1998 - page 92, insert section, MUST HAVE WARES, my work is again, there
PC-WELT FEB 1999 - page 83, again, my work is featured there

HOT SHAREWARE Numero 46 issue, pg. 54 (PC ware mag from Spain), 2001 my work is there, first one featured, yet again!
Also, a British PC Mag in 2002 for many utilities I wrote, saw it @ BORDERS BOOKS but didn't buy it... by that point, I had moved onto other areas in this field besides coding only...
Being paid for an article that made me money over @ PCPitstop in 2008 http://pcpitstop.com/news/winn... for writing up a guide that has people showing NO VIRUSES/SPYWARES & other screwups, via following its point, such as THRONKA sees here -> http://www.xtremepccentral.com...
It's also been myself helping out the folks at the UltraDefrag64 project (a 64-bit defragger for Windows), in showing them code for how to do Process Priority Control @ the GUI usermode/ring 3/rpl 3 level in their program (good one too), & being credited for it by their lead dev & his team... see here -> http://ultradefrag.sourceforge... or here http://sourceforge.net/tracker...
Which ended up fixing a "bug" for them later, here -> http://sourceforge.net/p/ultra... via its implementation (partially, NOT fully yet while minimized, less CPU, while forefront raise it, etc.)

Re:I hope they keep the Picasa desktop app around.
I don't really use a photo manager, just folders of photos sorted by year, then by month / event. That way they are completely platform agnostic. I still have my photos from the turn of the century Windows 98 days easily accessible.
To replace the awful Windows photo viewer, I use JPEGView.
You have to manually install it (eg: extract it to a folder in Program files, Right click a Jpg, and "Open with- choose default", then navigate to JPEGView, then remember the association.
For basic photo viewing it's dead simple. It loads automatically in full screen, left and right arrows navigate through the folder, and up/down (temporarily) rotate. It will also honour EXIF rotation tags, and F2 will quickly show EXIF data.
The big thing is it's FAST. When scrolling through a folder files load in no time.

Good Luck
I don't know if you can still catch up with github when it comes to collaboration workflow, but as a plain web hosting service for dynamic content you're still OK. I guess that if you can use the small window of opportunity that docker gives you, you might be able to regain your place.
I wish you well.

Re:Wasn't the C64 just a BASIC interpreter anyways

It's not that hard. For starters there's:
Chipmunk BASIC
PC-BASIC
True BASICYou can even run AppleSoft BASIC and QBASIC in your browser.

Bwaahahaha "browser extensions"? LOL!
Let's see them so I can TEAR THEM APART - they're chumpwork 1st of all & secondly, when you can show us you have COMMERCIALLY SOLD CODE from a Certified Microsoft Partner (EEC Systems/SuperSpeed.com) as I do which I was bought out on no less since it sped up that code by up to 40% in efficiency (which made it a FINALIST 2 yrs. in a row @ Microsoft TechEd 2000-2002 in its HARDEST CATEGORY SQLServer Performance Enhancement)?
THEN you can TRY "act my peer" since you haven't done ANYTHING like that... a listing of trade publications I was in PROBABLY before you were out of diapers let alone in the art & science of computing:

Re:Canadian-French multilingual keyboard
The French also fucked up Vietnamese romanization in the 17th century by filling it with dozens of accent combinations including combinations of two accent marks. There are so many combinations that VISCII uses sub-0x20 code points for printable characters.

Try ChaosEsque Anthology.
ChaosEsque is a mod/standalone/for of Xonotic. It has 90 weapons,
spell casting, monsters, foliage generation. It has over 100 maps and
thus is called ChaosEsque Anthology (a collection of poems). Over 50 of the
maps were built by one ChaosEsque contributor. Contributors to ChaosEsque
were mapping, 3d modeling, and coding quakeC for Nexuiz years before the
fork to Xonotic: thus ChaosEsque has the right to fork from Xonotic
and bring all the nexuiz maps and players back plus much more.ChaosEsque also has added various mods of it's own completely: City Generation,
buildable-buildings that can be captured or destroyed,
minecraft style block building, lockable
doors, inventory system, weapon replacement with: spikes, fire, nothing,
spell scrolls, medeval weapons, etc.ChaosEsque has extended other aspects of the game and other mods:
Tanks, planes, and cars have been added to the vehicle system.
Many types of grenades and mines hav been added to the grenade system.
Many additional monsters have been added to the monster system.Additionally, ChaosEsque Anthology is a traditional opensource project:
it does not coddle you and doesn't attempt to enforce Social Justice
values. Code in vanilla Xonotic filters out "banned" servers from the
server list you get to view: ChaosEsque disables this code.ChaosEsque isn't annoying to you, doesn't beg of you to upgrade, doesn't
try to automatically update, and doesn't check a website for the latest
version: such things are security errors (any hacker or govt could replace
such a upgrade file with anything)Furthurmore ChaosEsque sees value in others: Just as ChaosEsque does not
rip out code others have written because it is "old" (working code is kept,
not endlessly refactored), and maintains a second branch with Div0's bendy
model feature (a feature added the week ChaosEs
ChaosEsque will stay true to DarkPlaces. It is wrong to use someone and then kick
them to the curb as if they had no value. If one begins a relationship
one should continue in that. Regardless of weather "all" other developers
are snake-in-the-grass scum. ChaosEsque will remain true. What are your thoughts?

Re:#1 ITAR/USML #2 !=Skynet
very challenging issue of "grey matter" which decides what to do with the sensor information to the actuators.
This is trivial from an engineering POV. Tweaking a few parameters in a flight simulator game, http://sourceforge.net/p/fligh..., is sufficient and yes I have done it. OSS from DIYdrones has had source code for almost a decade to do this.

Self-defeating name: Rust
Programmers often choose self-defeating names. Imagine going to a top manager and saying you want to program a product in Rust.
GIMP means "a derrogatory term for someone that is disabled or has a medicial problem that results in physical impairment".
GNU.
LaTeX is written in both English and Greek letters.
There is nothing "regular" about Regular Expressions.
NetLoony Apache Server GUI and Tools. Looney is someone who is "Extremely foolish or silly".
pGina is not VaGina.
Would your boss take Bouncy Castle cryptography seriously. Or would he think it's for children? -

Re:Face it
Backwards compatibility- I'm really not aware of older Linux programs failing to work on modern Linux. Maybe, somewhere, that's true- I certainly don't see it though. Linux comes packed in with standard utilities dating back to the damned 70s for fucks sake. Windows struggles just to support shit from the Windows XP era. Linux is vastly more backwards compatible than Windows- hell, it even supports programs written for stuff from prior decades BEFORE IT EXISTED.
You are mixing two different concepts and thus comparing apples and oranges: you're comparing source-level backwards-compatibility on Linux to binary-level compatibility on Windows. Yes, you can take old source-code and have it compile happily on a modern Linux-distro, but you're not running an old binary then!
It can't even run fucking bash and it's 2015
http://win-bash.sourceforge.ne... or https://www.cygwin.com/ -- Poof, bash on Windows.
Linux runs MOST windows programs, and MANY windows games. Windows can't run a single fucking Linux binary without a goddamned VM!
Another apples-to-oranges comparison. Linux does *NOT* natively run Windows-binaries, you have to run them under Wine. There is nothing stopping one from making a similar translator for running Linux-binaries under Windows, and there isn't that much of a difference between Wine and a full-blown VM.

MacKeeper - brought to you by Slashdot Media
Anyone else notice that tons of apps on SourceForge (owned by the same great overlord as
/.) are bundling MacKeeper with the installer? Seriously, I've tried to grab a few apps from SourceForge recently only to find the app I'm trying to grab wrapped with some kind of crap-ware installer. Apparently it's wrapped at random and doesn't always happen to everyone. After seeing a few installers that I got from SF fail or never install my app or attempt to connect to the internet (and thankfully able to be stopped by Little Snitch), I did a few google searches to figure out WTF... Apparently SF has been doing this for a while now - and so really, I partially blame them for the fact that so many people have this kind of crap installed on their machines... See the reviews on FileZilla for some reviewers complaining about this very thing. -

Re:License
Depends, for instance llvm is used as GLSL compiler, and hence, it can select the target platform based on the available hardware. Likewise POCL uses LLVM to compile OpenCL kernels optimized for the hardware the kernels are supposed to run on.

Re:Are all ten of them Java?
None of them are Java.
What everyone must be aware of is that the security issues that exists with Java have primarily been related to the plugin in web browsers, where attackers could gain access to the client machines through specially written applets. Server side Java has rarely been the problem, and most of the server side Java problems have been due to badly written applications not the language itself.
My personal experience is that using a language that requires compiling vastly decreases the amount of possible bugs if all errors and warnings are resolved. But when you take a language like PHP then you have two inherent faults, the first is that it's not a compiling language so you will get the errors at runtime, the second is that you get a mixed code where you get a mix of HTML and PHP. The second problem is also present in ASP, ColdFusion and JSP (Java Server Pages), which accounts for the top 4 on the Softpedia list.
However anyone coding Java and not turning on a majority of warning options in tools like Eclipse, using tools like FindBugs and using Generics is risking to produce code with unnecessary bugs and memory leaks. Use all the resources that are available to you to catch problems early, that will save you headache in the future. Same goes for other programming languages as well, like C and Splint. There are also Lint of C++, but my experience so far is that there are shortcomings there. C# also have a few tools available to help the programmer find bugs, but my experience is that they aren't as good as FindBugs.
Languages like C and C++ suffers from additional shortcomings inherent by the languages themselves like pointers that can wander outside intended memory areas, and in those cases the tools like Valgrind are great. But C and C++ are also good from the perspective that it's easy to write extremely efficient code. Even though large systems are written in C and C++ it's not something I'd really recommend for anyone starting from scratch these days. Instead use languages that don't have built-in weakness when it comes to pointers and use C or C++ for specialized functionality where it's hard to use C#, Java, Fortran, Cobol, Compiling Basic etc.
And for Python fans: It's as I see it a semi-compiling language, with the advantage that it's easy to write code in it, but with some shortcomings from classic interpreting Basic - it's hard to manage a large system written in that language.

Short FPC history and goals overview
I thought I added the link to my original summary, but it seems to have gotten lost when I submitted it. In any case, Sourceforge's Project of the Month April 2014 interview with the founder of the Free Pascal Compiler, Florian Klaempfl, contains a good overview of the project's history, goals and development methodology.

Do you feel comfortable with that?
Do you feel comfortable with that? When TrueCrypt was abandoned, the TrueCrypt web site pushed people toward Microsoft.

Re:Let me get this right.
I haven't had any problems emulating an SNES with add-on stuff like SuperFX and Mode 7 graphics since, oh.. 450MHz PII-based Celeron using ZSNES.
ZSNES is fine if it runs the particular game you are trying to play. But it's not so fine for more obscure uses, such as compatibility with controller logs for console-verifiable speedruns, development of game mods and original games that work on the original console, and even a few games. From ZSNES Readme:
The following features are missing: Pseudo 512 SNES horizontal resolution (no games are known to use this)
Jurassic Park and Kirby's Dream Land 3 use this feature for tinted transparency.
Perhaps if the developer chose x86 ASM instead of C++
Then it would require megabytes upon megabytes of
:i386 libraries to run on an x86-64 operating system, and the emulator would itself have to be run in an emulator on ARM or any other non-x86 platform. -

Tabbed terminal plus tmux
Once I started using GNOME 2.x I started using Gnome Terminal. I quickly grew to love having a terminal emulator with multiple tabs. I am still using it (well, now it's MATE Terminal) but I also use tmux to have multiple windows per tab.
Each tab is a different computer. Tab 1 is generally the local computer upon which I am working; then tabs 2 through whatever are the various remote machines. I ssh to the remote machine, then run tmux and open as many windows as I need.
tmux is essential so that I can pick up where I left off if anything interrupts my work... with SSH, if your Internet connection glitches, you lose your connection; with tmux you can re-attach to your previous session and continue your work right where you left off.
I have met someone who runs doubly-nested tmux sessions. He binds both Ctrl+A and Ctrl+B as prefixes, and he uses one of them to switch "outer" sessions (which are one per machine) and the other to switch nested terminal windows (multiple windows for working within a machine). I like having the separation of using Alt+1 through Alt+0 to switch machines and then Ctrl+A,1 through Ctrl+A,0 to switch windows on a particular machine. (Besides, I'm a vi user and I actually use Ctrl+B when editing.)
In a previous job I had to work on Windows a lot, so I used Console. I customized its hotkeys so that it works just like Gnome Terminal.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/
For a while I was daydreaming about a GUI terminal that can use the tmux protocol and have tmux features perfectly integrated into the terminal: use the GUI scrolling thumb to scroll within the tmux history buffer, etc. But these days I'm used to working within tmux and I don't really need the features to be part of the GUI terminal application.
A bonus of being used to the way tmux works: I can still do all the same things when logged in using JuiceSSH on my Android tablet. I buy Bluetooth keyboards that have the control key somewhere sensible so I can type commands and be productive.

Even the CEO's Job Is Susceptible To Automation ?
That's old and busted :
http://cbsg.sourceforge.net/cg... -
Did you even do any basic research?
Anyway, I use BackupPC to backup user files from Windows machines on the company network. Works just fine. I tell my users it's "no guarantee", as they should store on the network shares any way.

Amanda and S3
Use AMANDA to do the back-ups. Use Amazon's S3 to actually store the dumps compressed and encrypted at the source — AMANDA has had the S3 back-end for a while. No, you do not need "Amanda Enterprise".
Having set just such a thing up at my last job, I'd be happy to help you out for a regular consulting fee. Should not take more than a week or two even on a large organization.

Re:Breaking out of the middle of a loop
You may consider them clean but I don't. Their use is analogous to the "friend" keyword in C++, in that the fact you are doing it at all shows there's a deeper problem with your logic/system design. I've been a professional software developer for 35 years and
Whatever. I'm in 2 decades experience range myself.
In all that time I've never seen an example of code that breaks out of a loop early that was justifiable for either efficiency or readability, and where I couldn't easily write a much cleaner version that didn't.
Here, make this more readable two failure points in loop.
Sorry, in that link, the code I mean is in the function from line 86 onwards.
