Spam Gourmet

...disposable e-mail addresses, that self-destruct after a few forwards to your real e-mail address.

Set the number of forwards to 3, say, and after your registration confirmation e-mail and a couple of others, Spam Gourmet eats everything else.

You can also customise the e-mail addy, with the name of the subscription site, and leave the number of forwards high, so you can see who the site you registered with is passing your address to.

You can see my post a few down from parent, but I'll repeat it here. Spam Gourmet provides you an easy way to have disposable addresses. Sign up with them and give them a user name, password, and your email address. Then, whenever you post an address, or subscribe to a web service, you give them this: (a unique identifier).(some number).(your spam gourmet user name)@spamgourmet.com . The number is the number of emails that can be sent to that address before it gets killed. (Mail after that point is "eaten", hence the name Spam Gourmet.) No need to actually "create" disposable addresses. No need to manage them. Go to Spam Gourmet once, and never go back.

A week later, spam to my hotmail account has dropped from 30 or so a day to about 2. (Warning: Hotmail support is only provided in the pay version, but there's a 30-day trial.) Preview the spam on the server, and you're able to delete it, blacklist it, and best of all, bounce it back to the sender. In my wildest dreams, I never thought it would work so well. YMMV.

Another kick-ass product is Spam Gourmet. Some website wants your email address? Give them (unique identifer).(some number).(your user name)@spamgourmet.com . The number is the number of emails they can send before the address is killed, and the user name is your user name at spamgourmet. Go sign up, and you never have to go back to the site again. It works.

I'm sure many people are like me, and read these testimonials and figure that they're hype. Trust me. They're not. I wish I had done it the first time I read about them.

I run a few web sites and for all of the e-mails that I put on the site, I just use a little javascript to paste the components of the e-mail address together - fools the spiders.

Still, I can't figure out how to prevent the relatives from signing me up for free offers or sending me e-cards through unreputable sites. I have a hard time giving them an e-mail address like andrewc.2.mom@spamgourmet.com (check it out: spamgourmet)

This is exactly what spamgourmet is useful for. Spamgourmet is free, and forwards messages to your "real" address, but only as many as are specified by the address. To use Spamgourmet, you first become a member with a single user address, however you can add "sub-addresses" in a similar way to subdomains, starting with just a lame label, then a number of MAX emails to be accepted at this alias, then the username.

Try Spam Gourmet. Not only are the email addresses disposable - but they automatically self-destruct after a little while. It seems to work quite well and is effective at cutting back on spam.

I just got a new domain ... Every time I give my Email online I give a diff name, for instance if I buy at yahoo I give "yahoo-shopping@mydomain.com".

People without their own domain who still want to do this can use a free Spam Gourmet account.

UberQuerty, this is an efficient technique. Me, I found that even friends can sometimes compromize my "good" email address by entering it in one of these email postcard websites that are generally big email addresses collectors.

So I give everyone (including friends) revokable addresses from spamgourmet and I invalidate selectively the addresses that start getting spammed. SG forwards me all emails to a secret account.

As per dictionary attack, they'll be extremely unlikely to succeed against these addresses considering the precautions you can choose to use on SG, such as keywords.

Briefly, I'll explain how they work in theory. After signing up with a disposable email service, they give you a disposable email address that you can, for example, enter into forms. Mail sent to that disposable email address gets automatically forwarded to your email account of choice. But here's where they supposedly come in handy. You can sign up for a different disposable email address everytime you fill in a web form. If you start getting spam, you can look at the disposable email address the spam was sent to and you can do 2 things: (1) cancel the disposable email address so you no longer get spam sent to that address; and (2) you know who gave out your disposable address and you can take whatever action you deem appropriate.

This seems like a cool product, in theory, but I haven't seen anyone with real world experience with these services. If anyone here can describe their experiences, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to get rid of spam, do this:

1. Create a "secret" email account from a reputable provider. Make it unguessable. Add some digits or weird long strings. Don't give it to anyone.

2.Go to spamgourmet.com and create an account. It's free and open source. In the "forward emails to" field, enter your secret email.

3. Give spamgourmet addresses to your friends. If your account name is Joe6Pack, give your pal Jack Daniels an address Jack.Daniels.Joe6Pack at spamgourmet dot com. To greatdeal.com, give greatdeal.com.Joe6Pack at spamgourmet dot com. This way you know who has what address. Those spamgourmet addresses are disposable.

All the emails sent to your various spamgourmet addresses are forwarded to your secret account.

4. If Jack, who is a friggin' idiot running XP and Outlook, gets yet another Kletz-like virus, the content of his Outlook address book will be compromized and all these addresses harvested by spammers. Just go to spamgourmet.com and disable the compromized address. Tell Jack he's a fool. Give him another disposable address if needed... Until next time.

If greatdeal.com turns out to be a spammer, just disable their address.

5. After a couple of months, disable your old email accounts, the ones that are spammed to death right now.

6. No more spam. Or if you get spam, just disable the spammed address and report the spammer to spamhaus.org. You'll never be spammed more than once.

Barring a totally new email protocol, we'll always have to deal with SMTP attacks. I'm afraid there's nothing you can do about dictionary attack, except maybe detect them and refuse the connection from this IP address for the next X hours.

Bayesian filtering is interesting because it reduces the efficiency of spam, hence the profitability of spam. But there is another way: Force people to think twice before they sell your address or, worse, post it on an open web site.

As a deterrent against address selling, I am now using exclusively disposable, traceable addresses, from www.sneakemail.com and www.spamgourmet.com.

Addresses generated from these sites can be given to just one entity or person. If that person sells or post your address, you inhibit the address and put that person/firm in your "stinker" list. And you make sure people know.

If the use of traceable addresses was prevalent, the number of spamming outfits would quickly drop, since you can pinpoint the source of each address. At least that's my experience.

My question is, do you think this would work on a large scale?

The only effective countermeasure I found was to use SpamGourmet. It's a web site that allows you to define disposable addresses forwarded to your real (secret) address. The disposable addresses can be disabled. They automatically shutdown after 20 messages from unknown senders (not in your whitelist). So, a Joe Job would generate, at most, 20 replies into your forwarded mailbox. After that, you'd have to re-enable the disposable email, although you'd rather leave it disabled because it WILL be spammed again.

Spamgourmet does exactly what you propose, and is much more effective.

a much easier way is to use spamgourmet.com. once registered, you can create limited-use email addresses on the fly.

In my view, disposable e-mail addresses with systems like mailshell are definitely the best solution, I find the little additional work of getting a new address is really worth it. There are quite a number of such services, a few more links:
Sneakemail, the oldest one of these system - there is still a free version (with limited mail size)
emailias.com, I find it very convenient, a lot of options (19.95$/year)
Spamex, a similar service ($9.95/year)
Spamgourmet, a slightly unusual, but interesting system, free
These services are quite sophisticated, with most of them you can reply to mails in any mail client without giving away the real address because the reply-to address is replaced and the answer will first go to the DEA, where it recieves the appropriate from-address; with emailias and others you can forward different alias addresses to different real addresses, ...

Another alternative is to use disposable email addresses for untrusted applications - qv spamgourmet.com (open source, with a free-to-use implementation).

The SMTP structure we have is a remarkable piece of engineering - it does a fantastic job of delivering each and every piece of mail, notifying the sender of failure, and trying for days to get through to intermittent servers. These principles are great for a network of people who are trustworthy -- we don't have that anymore. Spammers don't deserve this kind of reliability. Prolific use of disposable addresses that don't report back, and delete by default, would tend to lessen the value of the spammer's efforts.

SpamGourmet.com offers free disposable email addresses for registrations and other limited-use applications.

not too much work.

I was getting so much spam on my dial-up account that it sometimes took me 20 mins to download mostly useless, if not offensive, email. Sorting it automatically by client-side methods (e.g. SpamAssassin) wasn't helping the download time, since you still have to download the blasted spam before you sort it.

So I got rid of my contaminated address. I created an account on two web sites: www.spamgourmet.com (free) and www.sneakemail.com (mostly free).

Spamgourmet allows you to create an infinity of different email addresses all going to your POP3 account, by adding various prefixes. So say, to take a recent example, that your account is SpammerMaimer and you want to subscribe to, oh, MIT Technology Review's newsletter. You create an address called MITTechReview.20.SpammerMaimer (@ the SG domain). The "20" in the middle word of the address gives them 20 shots at emailing you before the address shuts itself down (and you can manually reset the counter).

Then, surprise! This stupid magazine sells your address to several spammers. On top of that, their forum system is spammer-friendly because it encourages email address collection.. You know that it's them, because you haven't given that address to anyone else. So what do you do? You go to your Spamgourmet account and shut down that MITTechReview.20.SpammerMaimer address. Problem solved.

For truly one-shot emails, I use sneakemail, which creates disposable addresses that you can disable individually.

The hardest thing is to keep the old address active for a while until all your usual correspondants have been informed of your new address. Then, when you switch your ISP email address, you just have to change the forward address in SG and Sneakemail.

Highly recommended.

and I really see very few ads.

ICQ spam is a bit annoying, I wish GAIM had a filter....

I get no more then a few spams per month, partly due to spamassassin (My ISP runs it) and partly due to being damn careful with my address.

I use both sneakemail (I even subscribed before it did anything other then remove a nag screen) and spamgourmet. You should too. If you want to protect your webpage email address, that is easy too, just use javascript or images (harvesters can't parse these), and even using HTML entities should offer some protection.

You sign up as, for example, fred, supply SpamGourmet with your real email address, then whenever you need to give out an email address to anyone you don't trust, give them something like: kazaa.10.fred@spamgourmet.com . SpamGourmet will relay 10 (and only 10) messages sent to that address though to your real address... any more will just get chomped. Maximum of 20 relays.

Very, very cool service. The fact that the basic model is free just rocks. I have no relation to them other than as a happy user.

That spam for a larger penis might come from a NYT list. You don't know. Do you really believe (a) they don't sell it and (b) it can't be stolen?

If you really want to be sure of who is spamming you, get a spam gourmet account. You can easily discern where the spam came from.

But "your word" than NYT didn't spam you really means less than zero to me. You have no idea what they might have done with your address.

By the way Spamgourmet is the ultimate weapon for giving a self-destructing address to websites that require one for registration without getting spammed in the process. It's tested and approved by yours truly.

Never sign up anywhere with a real email address.
Instead, get an account on Spamgourmet, and you'll have as many disposable email addresses as necessary, that will work only as many times as you want. Then they become a direct link to /dev/null, and you never hear about them again.

Check out spamgourmet.com. It institutionalizes that idea. Once you're registered you can create self-destructing email accounts, that accept N number of messages. The slick thing is that it creates them on the fly, the first time you send email to it, so after having visited them, you never have to go there again to actually create these accounts.

Introducing Sneakemail - when you absolutely, posititively have to send an email, but you don't feel like being spammed for your efforts. There's also Spam Gourmet, which actually looks more appropriate in this case, but I've not signed up there yet.

Just in case you haven't heard Spam Gourmet offers a nice service for exactly this kind of situation. You'll get a temporary address that will work for a few times and then expire.

Are there ANY decent webmail sites left out there anymore that don't charge for basic services like automatic forwarding? I'm just not going to pay for a webmail account that I only use as a disposable intermediary between all the info-greedy sites out there and my real account...

What you're looking for is spamgourmet: "self-destructing disposable email addresses, titanium strength spam blocking, very short learning curve". You set up a disposable (free) account with them, tell it how mny emails to allow, then give email address to untrustworthy individuals. They allow the number of emails to go through, then eat the rest. Can be reconfigured, or even created on the fly. Cool stuff!

spamgourmet.com is availble for free (with the code available open source) and arguably *even* more convenient, but I'm biased.

I usually type in root@127.0.0.1 as the email address... let 'em clog up their own mail server.

root@127.0.0.1 is not a valid address. Sending email to such address usually gives some error like unrouteable mail domain "127.0.0.1" because there's no MX record in DNS for 1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa (but I'm not sure if it would work even if there was such record, I'm too lazy to test it). Use root@[127.0.0.1] if you want email to literal ip address bypassing the standard MX resolving (see RFC 822). But the mail server can be configured to reject them, and e.g. my server will give you this error: root@[127.0.0.1] domain literals not allowed.

So the root@localhost is probably the the best choice (but it still sometimes may not work as you expect, if the "localhost" is not set as local domain of SMTP server). But remember that even when you make them spam local root mailbox, it's usually their own account, not the one of their ISP.

When I have to ever register with working email I make alias like spam-from-yahoo.com@my.domain so I always know who sends spam and I can always deactivate such alias. But I have yet to see anyone selling my spam-from-their.domain@my.domain address to anyone.

If you can't easily edit /etc/aliases on your mail server (and if you're not your own postmaster, it's usually true) check out spamgourmet self-destructing disposable email addresses:

After you save and confirm the email address where you'd like to receive messages, you can give out self-destructing disposable email addresses whenever you want as follows:

someword.x.user@spamgourmet.com

where someword is a word you haven't used before, x is the number of email messages you want to receive at the address (up to 20), and user is your username. For example, if your username is 'spamcowboy', and you give this address to somebody (or, more probably, some thing):

spamelope.2.spamcowboy@spamgourmet.com

the address will be created here the first time it is used, and you'll receive at most two messages (forwarded to the email address you specify above) on the address. The rest will be indelicately consumed. That's it. You won't ever have to come back here.

I don't use it because I have my own mail server and I can do whatever I want (or whatever I can) with my mail address, but spamgourmet seems to be great if you just have one mailbox somewhere like most of the people.

So the root@localhost is probably the the best choice (but it still sometimes may not work as you expect, if the "localhost" is not set as local domain of SMTP server). But remember that even when you make them spam local root mailbox, it's usually their own account, not the one of their ISP.

When I have to ever register with working email I make alias like spam-from-yahoo.com@my.domain so I always know who sends spam and I can always deactivate such alias. But I have yet to see anyone selling my spam-from-their.domain@my.domain address to anyone.

where someword is a word you haven't used before, x is the number of email messages you want to receive at the address (up to 20), and user is your username. For example, if your username is 'spamcowboy', and you give this address to somebody (or, more probably, some thing):

the address will be created here the first time it is used, and you'll receive at most two messages (forwarded to the email address you specify above) on the address. The rest will be indelicately consumed. That's it. You won't ever have to come back here.

I don't use it because I have my own mail server and I can do whatever I want (or whatever I can) with my mail address, but spamgourmet seems to be great if you just have one mailbox somewhere like most of the people.

spamgourmet offers unlimited free disposable email addresses that you can have forward to any real address. You don't have to create them on the website, just give one to somebody and it gets created the first time *they* use it. I never trusted Yahoo, anyway...

the Brightmail statistic that spam has doubled since September begs the question of what was happening then. spamgourmet gave admittedly far from scientific stats showing a marked *drop* in September, probably due to the attacks of the 11th. I wonder if Brightmail could say that spam has doubled since last August...

It's perfect for registering online or leaving a temporary contact address. I've used it almost exclusively for one of my accounts, and I get virtually no spam on that account. It's a lifesaver.

Ack, I just want a nice PERMANENT (and cheap!) email address

I always thought pobox.com was a good service for that. Never used 'em though, never quite needed what they offered.

However one service I do use for very not-permanent addresses is Spam Gourmet which lets you make as many limited life addresses as you like (you can extend their life if you want). The only forward to something else though. I use them for pretty much all web forms and Usenet posts.

The idea is to set you free to surf/sign up at will and make it easier to not get spam than it is to get spam.

Or you use SpamGourmet and set up your website to randomly generate the first field so that if a spambot spiders your address, the email is only valid for x number of times.
