Re:Reflectivity map...
First Google result for Specular Map: "Specular maps are the maps you use to define a surface's shininess and highlight colour." Basically, every video game already does this. http://wiki.splashdamage.com/i...
One of the best videos I've seen showing some of the problems was the original Nvidia Ira tech demo. They mention things like how skin doesn't just reflect light off the surface, but absorbs and defracts it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Re:Splash Damage
Splash Damage was the company that did the port of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars to Linux. The port was good and I still play quite a bit.
Incorrect, Splash Damage was the one that created and developed the game. A Linux software programmer/specialist, of which is an id Software employee, is who did the actual Linux port known by the name of TTimo. Now from the discussion on the forums it seems Splash Damage might be doing their own Linux port this time around for BRINK.

America's Army
America's Army might run on your hardware. It ran fine on my PC back when I played it, and all my hardware is at least 6 years old now (PIII, GeForce 4, etc.) I was playing back when it was in the 1.x versions however, and now it's in the 2.x's. I believe they're using a newer generation of the Unreal Tournament engine since I last played. I don't know if you can still play the 1.x engine online.
It was a very polished game for being free. Being released by the US army as a recruitment tool, it was obviously quite realistic. You went through basic training first, and could only become a sniper if you passed with really high scores, etc. Combat is very team oriented (limited number of each player class available per level, etc.) and realistic (when you die, you have to wait until the mission is over to come back, etc.)

Between that and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, I didn't have to buy a PC game for at least a couple years... back when I still had time to play them. -
Re:Well..
The guys over at Splash Damage have a good sense of humour too. I found this in one of the scripts for Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars:
// DAVE THE LARGE BROKEN DOOR STATE CHANGE NEEDS TO HAPPEN HERE
// DAVE ISN'T A LARGE BROKEN DOOR, WHO WROTE THIS -
BF2 was bad, IMO. Let's look to the future.
I bought BF2. Put it down after a bit for the same reasons others have listed in this discussion. I'm not gonna restate the problems with BF2. I'd rather ask you people this: What games are you looking forward to in 2006?
ET:QW is the only game on my radar for 2006 so far.
Basically, ET play mechanics (which I like) set in a sci-fi Quake universe. Humans vs Strogg.
So far what I think makes it stand out to me:
-Unlimited draw distance, no fog or pop-up
-Asymetrical, yet balanced factions. Meaning, both sides don't have the same (or incredibly similar) weapons. Humans tend to have machine guns and tanks and helos, while the Strogg will have a big-ass walker (heavy armor, heavy damage, but slow) and laser guns and shit. This could be cool, each side having distinct, unique gear, instead of carbon copy armies fighting with the same pallet-swapped eq.
-Not Sucking on Foot. I've read numerous times about how the devs are taking great care to make it so you can stil kick ass and succeed if you didn't get a vehicle.
-No Ranked Server BS

Quake3-based Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is free
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (wolfet) is a WWII multiplayer game that I believe is more fun than Counterstrike or Medal of Honor (multiplayer mode).
The only other multiplayer FPS that required as much teamwork in order to win is the free Half-Life mod called Natural Selection. Simply amazing mod. One team plays aliens while other plays humans.
WOLFET was originally set to include both single and multiplayer modes--my understanding is that when they ran into problems completing the single-player mode, they decided to distribute the multiplayer game as a free download.
I've run the server on Linux but have only tried playing on Windows.
Highly recommended (remember to apply the latest patch and download some custom maps). There are also many mods available too.

ET:Quake
The Id/Activsion Return to Castle Wolfenstein series has spawned another creation: Enemy-Territory.
Splash Damage developed the Enemy-Territory Wolfenstein multi-player game (free download, release of source for modders.) According the Id CEO (Guy who did the G4 TV interview?) ET: Quake will use the Doom 3 engine. The demo looks awesome and lighting does not appear to be an issue. Wow. I will upgrade my computer for this one.
I have stuck with the RTCW and now ET series for online FP shooter/multi-player games for the last 5 years for two reasons:
1. I think the ET, and previous RTCW, series of games are fantastic for public and clan play.
2. They have always released/maintained a great Linux client. -
SplashdamageHere's a good start for you. Download the Enemy Territory Source Code here, and start tinkering with the code.
This will give you an excellent platform to start developing games from. You can dabble in gameplay, graphics, sound, AI, and so forth in a proven game. And heck, if you break it, you can always download it again
:)Writing your own modification is probably the easiest way to get into game development, for the simple fact that it is extremely popular and there's a large knowledge base to support your efforts.

what's new?
There's nothing new in gamers "marketing" their current favourite multiplayer games, all the MP games I've played intensively I've seen players constantly try to nudge other people into the game via websites, forums, IRC. Admittedly few are that organised at spamming, but the result is liable to be at least as much exposure on at least as many forums, etc. (yes, including
/. newsposts, most newsposts on current games are probably posted by their existing fans, right?)
Movies are hardly new either, though for the games I play they tend to be more of the nature of making a video really for the experience of making one, often under the guise of pimping their clan. This trailer (for some clan "R3") was released yesterday and the quality of the edit and artistry is so far above that PS one (though at 7x the filesize).
Scoring a new 7day trial is an impressive acheivement, though the game video'd above is Enemy Territory which doesnt have a subscription. Or a retail price - it's totally free to download. -
Don't forget software!
If you're trying to do this on the cheap, Wolfenstein: Enemey Territory is great. Free to download, & the hardware requirements aren't all that outrageous if your computer is 3yrs old. Over the last couple of years, the personal LANs i've attended always seem to come back to this old standby. If ET's not your flavor of carnage, there's a listing of free games that was mentioned on
/. that I can't seem to find the URL for...(anyone?) -
Re:3D Realms?
I doubt 3D Realms would ever license the D3 engine. If only because I'm even starting to doubt the existence of 3D Realms themselves.
I can now reveal to your delight... the developer is Splash Damage. They have been proudly boasting this for a week or so and are even hiring people to work with it (check out their site if your good with polygons 'n' stuff).
SD are the legends behind what is for me the best damn team based shooter of all time, Enemy Territory.

Re:No Multiplayer support for PC
I believe they showed Doom3 multiplayer at quakecon last year, and from rumors I've heard, Splashdamage is working on the doom3 multiplayer levels.
check this out -
Best of all, W:ET is free and open source!
W:ET is perhaps the only modern FPS that I know of that is: a) absolutly free b) available for windows and linux c) open source If you are interested, you can download the source from SplashDamage. There is even an SDK available for modding the game. Yes, like any other FPS, it will take you a few hours of play to get used to it, and each map will take a few rounds to learn, but it is a heck of a game.

rtcw:enemy territory
rtcw: enemy territory is free and has a ton of servers to choose from. also has linux servers/clients. it's pretty fun for a game now and then, and the system requirements aren't that insane that you need a high-end machine to play. i highly recommend it.

Try Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory. It's free. It's fun. Runs on Windows or Linux.
Did I mention free?

If your're thinking this way, you're wrong.Level and Game-Designer, even a game programmer, are creative jobs. Therefore your answer regarding the right level editor has also to be "creative". Getting into the business is not a tool problem but a social one. I mean: Take a look into the game communities and you will find out, that companies, like Splash Damage once made mods and maps for a community, before they were allowed working on Doom3. To answer your question: To get a maximum attention on your artworks choose the right community.
I don't think, that anyone can really help you. An artist / creative must constantly find new ways for his artwork to express itself. It's just like in the music business. Did Jimmi Hendrix ask someone which guitar he shall use?

The cards are still fully supported.
In fact, they've been updated fairly recently in fact.
They're fairly well supported, the Kyro2 I'm still using runs everything from Natural Selection under WineX to Enemy Territory natively under Linux without a hitch.
Unsupported? Hardly. -
Re:Enemy TerritoryWoops, forgot links:
Downloads for Enemy Territory (Linux/Windows): here
The background behind why it's free, is that the developers Splash Damage were working on a single player and multiplayer expansion for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but in the end ditched the single player version, and released the MP version free!?
The map we play is small and fun, available from here.

Re:Online Gaming ImprovementsYou should try Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Linux client as well. Has all the bells and whistles: kick, mute, restart, shuffle by XP (all voting based). The game is *free*, servers are plentiful, and it's TEAM based. You don't work as a team - no matter HOW good you are - you don't succeed.
Splash Damage really outdid themselves on this one. Check it out.

Re:be sure of licensing...
I know it took me a while to find the free version of this as the Activision site doesn't mention how to get it for free. Head on over to Splash Damage for the announcement. There are Linux and Windows versions available for download. Both versions have a BitTorrent link available.

Re:Doesn't require original RtCW?
Bzzzzzzzzt no it won't Splash Damage (the development studio) say so
