I think Rick Santorum already knew this
Didn't anyone hear about this before? http://www.spreadingsantorum.c... If you know how it works of course you can "manipulate" it. How is this news?
-
I assumed it was something about Santorum...

Re:Santorum
When Santorum hears "Drill, Baby, Drill!", the seafloor isn't the first thing that crosses his mind.
And when Santorum hears "frothy gunk," himself is the first thing to come to mind.

Re:Not fear of regulation
Just because Europeans are willing to submit to tyranny why should the U.S.? Why should anyone?
Let's also bring over the vast array of cameras from the U.K. while w are at it!
We're not the ones submitting to tyranny. Regulation of industry is part of the price we pay for not submitting.
I'll grant you that the Brits seem a bit lax when it comes to protecting themselves from government, though.
Then again, neither do they seem likely to elect quite the same quality of nutters to lead them?

Influenced by the GOP?

Re:News posted by Christianists or Republics?
it most certainly is a word.
Santorum has a "definition" too...doesn't mean it's a valid one.
You can defend it's usage all you like, but that wont change the fact that Islamist is a pejorative invented by non-Muslims to disparage Muslims, same as "Democrat Party" is used by Republicans to disparage their political opponents. You can find lots of references for that, too.
"Democrat Party" is a political epithet used in the United States instead of "Democratic Party" when talking about the Democratic Party.[1] The term has been used in negative or hostile fashion by conservative commentators and members of the Republican Party in party platforms, partisan speeches and press releases since 1940.

You know
You know, I am told that posting this link contributes to a web site that reveals embarrassing information about Santorum every time someone Googles on his name.
This link does the same for Romney.
Oops. I am off topic and disrespectful of thugs and clowns.....um Republican candidates for the presidency.

santorum vs Santorum
I don't see a problem. How is this different than any word that is both a person and a thing?
Santorum (capital 'S') is a proper name. In the case of Rick Santorum, it's a person's surname.
santorum (lowercase 's') is a thing: a frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.
Hill (capital 'H') is a proper name. Faith Hill is an award winning singer.
hill (lowercase 'h') is a thing: a natural elevation of the earth's surface, smaller than a mountain.

Re:Unfortunately, You Can't Remove It.
I personally feel that search engine manipulation is a problem, and while I commend Google's position on their neutrality - I feel some precedence should be given when it involves peoples names. If you have a unique name and somebody blogs bad things about you, you are stuck with those results *for life* every time someone Google's you.
And if those bad things weren't directly correlated to your repeated public statements while holding public office, I might feel sorry for you.
And no-one has accused Spreading Santorum of manipulating results - it's simply the older and (apparently still more relevant) result than his election site. Which is how it should be.
Would it make people feel better if Savage created a corporation for SS (so it's now "speech"?)

Re:its a Santorum problem
I dunno, I think the problem is a Rick Santorum's Problem. It's because of Rick Santorum's obsession with gay people and banning gay sex. Maybe Rick Santorum should get off his soap box. And since Rick Santorum is against gay marriage obviously those people are going to be active against him along with others that fear is rise to power.
All you are doing is (ahem) spreading "santorum".

Re:Cyberbullying
deliberately trying to game the search engine to have your results on top
No gaming involved. Google's search results are based on how popular a particular link is. People find the sexual meaning of santorum to be worth linking to. As pointed out in the article this isn't a Google bomb like linking "miserable failure" to "George H. W. Bush" was.
However, a person's name definitely belongs to them.
No it doesn't unless they have a unique name and have trademarked it. Plenty of Santorums, and santorum, in the world apart from one ludicrously anti-gay presidential wannabe.

Spreading Santorum
So, it seems that everyone else has forgotten to link Spreading Santorum in the article, so I'll do it here.
It's not that Santorum has a Google problem, it's that Santorum has a bigotry problem, and lots of us are participating in the solution - which is to make it VERY public that he's a homophobic slime.
It's kind of like the "vote for the crook, it's important" publicity in the '91 Louisiana gubernatorial election. At least Duke was a former grand wizard of the KKK, Santorum is CURRENTLY doing everything he can do to harm a minority part of the population - and this frothy mix is running for President!
So I fully support the fact that the word "santorum" now means "the frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex." Sure, it's distasteful. But it's important.

Re:So... what's the difference?
Really? Because Santorum is about as right-wing nutjob as it gets, and Obamacare might just as well be called Romneycare, since it's very similar to the Massachusetts plan.
And yeah, Ron Paul is a different kind of RWNJ, the big difference is that he understands the futility of the drug war and is against foreign entanglements.
Fortunately for the country, we're not going to have to deal with any of it beyond the campaign, since Obama is going to be reelected.

Runs on Santorum
Wasn't there something in that Roswell deathbed confession about a perpetual motion machine?
Did someone at the slashdot story submission approval have a brainfart? Why are they approving bullshit stories like the perpetual motion machines and Roswell? Somebody must feel they have to compete with Digg.
Santorum defined. -
Re:Kangaroo Science
They are saying that the continents drifted apart from Pangaea in the last six thousand years!
Yes, indeed. They could slide around a lot faster back then. There was a lot more santorum in continents (heh, heh, get it? incontinents), or rather between them and the mantle. It provided just the right amount of lubrication. Because of that superabundance of that frothy mixture God had to destroy most of mankind. -

Fuck Senator John McCain. Fuck him up the ass hard with a big thick dildo with built-in violet wand until the santorum runs down his legs. Tie him down and fuck him and give him the golden shower he wants and deserves, until he admits his wretchedness, admits what a bootlicker he is, admits that he gets off on being a slave, because he can't handle freedom.

Re:If only they had listened to Slashdot
We're agreeing! I'm going to www.accuweather.com to check a temperature. Do you have the ZIP Code for Hell?
There was a time when you could have gone to NOAA to check that temperature. Did Rick Santourm finally get this way?
Disclaimer: May not want to follow that link at the office

Re:Name Can Be Deceiving
I guess that we may call you a liberal, then?
No, you just can't call him a reactionary, facist wingnut.
"Moderate" or "pays attention in class" will describe him nicely. -
Re:Attack the messenger (please)Yes, fundamentalist protestants will ignore the pope.
Right-wing Catholics may listen, though, and there many of them who side with the ID folks. A famous example of a pro-ID Catholic is Rick (I wish my name didn't have another meaning) Santorum, Republican Senator from Pennsylvania who has added pro-ID wording to legislation.
Of course, there is no proof that this will do any good. In particular, the extreme right-wing Catholics of the Mel Gibson variety, like many fundamentalist protestants, have already given up on the pope.

Santorum
To those who don't know. Rick Santorum (bought and sold by accuweather which is a Pennsylvania corp) is proposing a bill that would kill free NWS information in favor of paid for info from greedy corporations like Accuweather. Since the NWS provides the bulk of Accuweather's infornation, we would essentially be paying a tax on this information and then paying accuweather to present it to us. It is almost like letting companies charge tolls on public roads that were built with public tax dollars. Pretty great huh?
For those of you who realize what a douchebag Rick Santorum is, I bring you the following link:
http://www.spreadingsantorum.com/
Also, here is a link about his proposed bill to the No Child Left behind act forcing educators to talk about "Intelligent" design. (Oh the irony!)
Santorum Amendment
Here is a link to the wikipedia arcticle about the comments he made that started the whole gay controversy.
Santorum Controversy
Enjoy.
You know, if more young people voted in America, it would be my hope that scumbags such as Santorum wouldn't see the light of day. Campaign donations need to be the first to go. What the bill that santorum is introducing would do is cut the public off from something that it pays for and something that Accuweather uses. Do you think accuweather has their own satellites up there? We don't need accuweather. We NEED the NWS. -
Re:The same weather service
this is the same weather service our friends at Accuweather and like minded companys are trying to get to stop their innovation.
(Note: I am affiliated with a weather services company and am in full support of striking down Santorum's bill. Posting anonymously because AccuWx has mastered the art of barratry.)
No. AccuWeather is not trying to stop government innovation. They are trying to stop competitor innovation. In the grand scheme of things, they could care less what data the government releases for two reasons:
(1) SLA. Being an AccuWeather client allows you to have a Service Level Agreement listing out the guarantees on the availability of your product. The NWS will not provide that.
(2) Custom products. For every company that uses weather data, there is a different specification on what format/product they want. While the product can be generated from the NWS feed, it is often more cost effective to let someone build your product - they have to worry about the feed format and they have to worry about getting it to you.
Ten years ago, there was a substantial cost barrier to providing weather data. The cost of data acquisition limited the number of companies that could provide post-processed products. With the advent of Internet data distribution, the cost of data acquisition is virtually zero. This means that anyone with a basic idea for a weather product can grab the data, process it, and make it available for sale.
What AccuWeather wants to do create an artificial data acquisition barrier. Many of their products are still priced at the "early '90s data feed" rate. Other companies are coming in and providing the same (or better) service for much less money, directly affecting their bottom line.
Now, of course they can't buy off a Senator to say "we want to stop the NWS data feed because our competitors are using it to provide our products at lower costs". So, the puppetmaster directs him to say that it is government competition which is hurting them. In either case, the desired action is the same -- stop the free flow of tax-payer sponsored weather data. That is their ultimate goal. -

Re:Separation of Church and State
And if the government were to support or favor any religion they would have established a de facto official religion. Therefore it is impossible to be compliant with that law without a seperation of church and state.
All true. But if "intelligent design" consists of the belief that the Universe was designed and/or created by a supreme being of some sort... which religion does that favor? Many, probably most, if not all, religions have creation mythology, and creation myths tend to involve supreme beings.Yes, I'm sure the folks in the state that brought us Senator Santorum probably have a particular supreme being in mind, but I think it should be quite possible to present a non-deity-specific version of "intelligent design" which would not endorse or advocate for any specific religion, and thus not violate the establishment clause.
-
What can you say to this?
"It is not an easy prospect for a business to attract advertisers, subscribers or investors when the government is providing similar products and services for free," Santorum said.
Perhaps we can we expect Senator Santorum to next intervene on behalf of the unjustifiably repressed legions of private firefighters, police, water safety testers, and maintainers of roads?
After all, it's hard to compete in the market when the government does it for free!
This is also a good time to mention Spreading Santorum, a personal crusade by the advice columnist Dan Savage to popularize the use of the word 'santorum' to describe a (mostly) gay sex act, with the intention of embarrassing the anti-gay senator: spreadingsantorum.com
