Re:GRC's "Never 10" utility is small & free!
Good tool. Here's another one:
https://www.safer-networking.o...
"Spybot Anti-Beacon is a standalone tool which was designed to block and stop the various tracking (telemetry) issues present in Windows 10. It has since been modified to block similar tracking functionality in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems.
Anti-Beacon is small, simple to use, and is provided free of charge. It was created to address the privacy concerns of users of Windows 10 who do not wish to have information about their PC usage sent to Microsoft. Simply clicking âoeImmunizeâ on the main screen of Anti-Beacon will immediately disable any known tracking features included by Microsoft in the operating system."
"If any issues occur with your PC while using Anti-Beacon, undoing the changes made can be done by clicking the âoeUndoâ button in the main window. This will re-enable all tracking services. If you experience any issues using Anti-Beacon or have any suggestions/recommendations, please be sure to let us know on the forum thread relating to this tool."

Re:So use a video capture card?
For one thing, "speedrunner.exe" appears to be malware according to a thread on Spybot forums.
For another thing, even if speedrunner.exe refers to a different executable, it works only for real-time speedruns that incorporate human reflexes and the limited information that the game provides to users. It's not practical for tool-assisted speedruns that attempt to achieve theoretically perfect play with perfect information. How do you perform the technique of "luck manipulation" in your case?

Re:Best AV/App-Watch/Firewall for 64 Bit Windows?
-
Re:Sure those are pics?
Have you used IE7 in XP? Works exactly the same way.
Turn off the Allow/Deny by going to Control Panel, User Accounts, then Turn User Account Control On or Off.
IE7 options can be set by going to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, and on the Advanced Tab.
Make sure you have java installed, www.java.com
As for the translucent windows, if it really bugs you, Right Click on Desktop, goto Personalize, Window Color and Appearence, Open Classic Appearance, and under Color Schemes, choose Windows Classic.
Also, you may have some spyware. Goto Spybot.info and download, install, and run Spybot. Make sure to turn off the Tea Timer.
Also, make sure you have your Windows Updates installed.
Anything else I can help you with?

Re: Something else that would stop a lot of crap
but I have haven't ever seen anything that monitors programs that start on boot up.
Spybot -- search and destroy contains such a program. -
This explains my recent Trojan infection
I recently removed a nasty trojan (a member of the 'Wareout' family) from my laptop, with the aid of the free Sophos Anti-Rootkit and fantastic free technical support from the great folks at the spybot forums. My best guess was that I got the infection when I logged into a free wifi connection at a local cafe. I saw a brief message from my antivirus software that a trojan had been detected, but afterwards, it reported nothing. After reading the eweek article, I learned that my Intel Pro/Wireless driver had major security vulnerabilities. I just downloaded the update and hopefully will be malware-free for a little while. So much precious time development time was wasted because of this infection!

Odd that this thread
... should appear the day after I finally got my system cleaned from one. I had spent the last three days battling spyware, and popups and was ready to give in the towel.
I had ran Adaware, Spy Sweeper, Spybot S&D, AVG Free, Kasperky, Killbox, and HIJack This, still none fully cleaned it, it got rid of all the other junk and I had blocked my computers IP to keep it isolated on my network so newer adware wouldn't get installed.
I still had an odd entry in Add/Remove programs ( Network Monitor ) I had installed no network monitor, and upon removal it would complain about not finding the uninstall. C:\Netmon\uninstall_nmon.vbs". I decided to run a search on this and found it a variant of L2M ( Look2Me or VX2 ) yet all the anti spyware programs proclaimed my system clean yet popups still came.
I ran across this thread, which helped me to clean it out. It lead me to this post, which finally helped me clean it. I had this entry in my registry under HIJackThis O20 - Winlogon Notify: - C:\WINDOWS\system32\.dll
Seems it was hooking into Winlogon and upon shutdown it was setting itself up to restart on boot. The fix suggested in the second link I posted was the charm, fixed it no issues first time and 12 hours later no popups and normal processes running. -

From experience
Spyware / Adware / Malware stuff is pretty easy to deal with. Check out some of this stuff: it's free, clean and won't trash your computer.
Spybot Search and Destroy.
AdAware
MS Anti-Spyware
Keeping your OS up to date definitely will help out, and being smart about what you download from who and where. Most people infect themselves, and don't know it because of all of the shady software downloads out there. A good hardware or software firewall solution is easy enough to come by for cheap or free depending on how much time and effort you want to put into it. It's up to you as a user to protect yourself so study up.
Now, who's going to be the first to crack the "But Windows is malware" joke? -
Re:CCleaner
Mod the parent way up!
CCleaner, while it won't solve all of your problems, will certainly improve things. I keep a copy on my ThumbDrive and I use it on any Windows XP PC I can.
Combine this with Spybot-Search & Destroy with it's TeaTimer app running in the background to warn you of Registry updates, and you have an excellent defense against crap accumulation.

Re:Web-based RSS Feed Reader
It absolutly, 100% does not replace keywords with links. Do us all a favor and visit the spybot homepage. Or perhaps you mean Autolink from the google toolbar? Which you have have installed, and to click?
-
Re:Read this and shut-up you big-balled fuck
Hmm, I just visited all those sites using Firefox 1.0.1 on Windows - and no popups.
Maybe you should try Spybot and clean out the spyware you have without blaiming Firefox? -
Apple did this a lot in the '80s
Apple did this a lot in the '80s so they wouldn't tick off ISVs. They even went so far as to cripple their hard-disk formatting utility to only work with their drives, so utility vendors could make a living.
Maybe Microsoft doesn't want to tick off the commercial anti-spyware tool vendors.
Maybe, just maybe, they want to leave the door open for zero-cost or donation-supported anti-spyware vendors like Spybot Search & Destroy. Nahh, Balmer & Co. aren't that altruistic. -
Re:Dell is the low price builder
It was not what I would call "perfectly capable", until we dropped another $100 to upgrade the memory from 256MB to 768MB
A hundred dollars to triple the memory? Personally, I don't want a machine with less than 512 MB, but 256 MB is more than ok for most, who mostly browse the Internet.WinXP is so advanced it was taking 3-5 minutes to log in and out and reboot.
The windows XP systems which I have worked on the reboot time is a only a couple of minutes. I would say, less than 3 minutes, as someone who has nerviously watched Solaris server reboot, I'd say that is excellent. Don't worry, instant on computers will come, but we aren't quite there yet.Oh, and then there was the several hours spent installing SP2, post-SP2 critical updates, updating the anti-virus software and configuring the firewall and other safety checks to try and keep the non-computer-oriented family owners safe from the Internet.
Then use Linux. I wasn't talking about 'the total cost of ownership', just the initial cost of purchasing one from Dell and Gateway vs. other PC manufactures. And haven't you read all the horror stories of cheapo Dell computers dying left and right?
No, No I haven't but I have heard of some complaints about thier Customer Service, That's a nice thing about using the internet, you can back up your facts by adding a hyperlink, you should try it sometime. That's why I point most people to an entirely different place [Apple.com] for choosing a new family or personal computer. They can't compete on the initial price point, but 4 years down the line you will still have a usable computer with amazing capabilities.
Apples are ok, so, why did you buy a PC in the first place (you used the term 'we' as part of the price paid), seems like you don't even follow your own advice. The cheapest apple only has 256 MB, and it costs $75 to just double it! I haven't rebooted an Apple in a couple of years, but I am fairly certain that it isn't instantly on.
I just bought a new 120 GB Hard drive, and completely reinstalled windows, (yes I kept it off the net until I was ready to hit Windows update and I have a hardware firewall, which I suggest for everyone), and it only took me less than 4 hours total. BTW, for the most part you don't need to be around when the PC is doing the 'update dance', go outside, do the dishes, make love to your wife, wash the car, do the laundry. Also, run Spybot -Search and Destroy when you are finished. Also, 'my other computer is Linux'. ...then there was the several hours spent installing SP2... -
Re:Pin codes on international/premium rate
The program most often recommended for preventing modem hijacking appears to be StopItNow. It's shareware.
Both Adware and SpyBot will detect some but not all hijackers.

Free virus software is out there.
http://www.clamwin.net/ is an allegedly good antivirus program.
Also, http://www.spybot.info/ has been alleged to be a good antispyware program.

Helpful tools
We all know spyware is a fucking waste of both resources and internet bandwidth, please do everyone a favour and install either Ad Aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/ or Spybot Search & Destroy from http://www.spybot.info/.
If you happen to run an OS where these aren't supported (everything but win*) just ignore this post :-). -
Re:This is good
Here's an idea: Don't hook up the phone line to the computer unless you plan on going online
Here's a better idea: download Spybot Search & Destroy and run it. Keep your system patched. Run AV software. Don't run unkown binaries (read:"crap off Kazaa") -
It is not that far-fetched at all
Out of interest, when I rebuild my home server recently, I installed a fresh Windows XP (with SP1(!)), but nothing else. Then pointed my browser at www.netants.com (that site would probably deserve a good whacking) and sat back and watched the show.
Within five minutes, there was porn everywhere. The browser homepage (which also downloaded new tasty bits of spyware whenever the browser was launched), the favorites (it would take a determined smut-lover months to accumulate a list of porn sites that long!), the browser history, lots of links on the desktop, porn quick-bars, search bars, the start menu, and every other piece of mal-, spy-, ad- and crapware under the sun.
The scary thing is, I did not click on any buttons, links or otherwise. The website simply exploited IE flaws to install all this crap.
I then ran ad-aware and spybot search and destroy and the amount of shit that had been installed in about five minutes was absolutely staggering! After that, I continued using the machine for a few minutes, but could not shake the feeling that there was still a fair amount of *ware left on the box. I had to repartition, reformat and take a shower to feel clean again.
So it would be all too easy for Joe User, who does not quite grasp the concept of IT security in general and the necessity to upgrade in particular, to stumble upon a site like that and catch all that junk. After witnessing this, I will certainly be migrating my parents and other relatives to Linux/Mozilla as soon as I can.
I have now prepared an old laptop that I can restore quickly by re-ghosting with a virgin XP install. Every time I need to impress the importance of updating, configuring your system properly and generally staying away from MS software, I take the laptop along, open abovementioned site and ask people to clean up the machine. Normally they give up in disgust after firing up IE for the first time. Might be an idea to do that in court, too.

Re:ad-aware
Spybot is just as good. I find running them both is a better solution, each find things the other doesn't.
-
what whenu is and does.
you probably know it more as savenow. a nasty varient of spyware. if you do a ctrl-alt-del and you see savenow in your process list, then you got it.
this site tells you what it does
spybot and ad-aware both remove it if you got it on your PC
For Ad-Aware. -
Effective combination...I work at a computer repair shop, and nearly every single computer I work on has some degree of spyware. The best combination of tactics to kill spyware that I've found is as follows (All in Safe Mode, of course):
- Trend Micro Damage Cleanup - Free, Effective at catching a multitude of viruses and malware (Detects some spyware as trojans or adware)
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- Ad-Aware
- CWShredder - Kills CoolWebSearch variants
- HijackThis! - Powerful general tool for cleaning up what the others miss
- LSPFix - to fix broken LSPs that interfere with Windows' TCP/IP stack
There's not a lot to be missed after that. Process Explorer is also good for finding processes running that might not be of obvious origin.
