By Tim Copperfield
New York, NY - #FFXI (The Official Final Fantasy 11 Fan Club) today announced acquisition of The SCO Group for $26.9 million in stock and $40 million in FFXI game credits.
#FFXI today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the intellectual property and technology assets of The SCO Group, a leading provider of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, based in Lindon, Utah. #FFXI's acquisition of SCO technology will help #FFXI sign up more members worldwide. In addition to developing new solutions, #FFXI will use SCO engineering expertise and technology to enhance the #FFXI member services.
"I'd love to see these #FFXI types slowly consumed by millions of swarming microbes and converted into harmless and useful biochemicals." said an anonymous slashdot poster, blinded by the #FFXI success in achieving first post on a popular geek news website, slashdot.org.
"This #FFXI shit is getting out of hand. Slashdot needs troll filters. Or better yet a crap flood mod that I can exclude from my browsing. Seriously, a good troll is art, what you dumb fucks are doing is just plain stupid." said spacecowboy420.
macewan, on linuxquestions said "Thanks for that link to the SCO quotes page. My guess is that they want to be bought out. Hrm, think they want #FFXI to buy them??"
After careful consideration and debate, #FFXI board of directors agreed to purchase 6,426,600 preferred shares and 113,102 common shares (the equivalent of 150,803 ADSs) of SCO, for an aggregate consideration of approximately US$26.9 million and approximately $40 million for FFXI fans that were working in Lindon, Utah offices of The SCO Group.
If all goes well, the final decision is to be expected shortly, followed by transfer of most SCO FFXI fans from their Lindon, UT offices to the #FFXI Headquarters in New York.

Re:We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto
No kidding. I just picked up a (very sleek) Gameboy SP (in onyx black, of course) after seeing Advance Wars 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics on a friend's system.
These two are amazingly good for a portable system and would have even done well as Playstation 1 games. -
Re:only cds I buy are imports
Uh, no, I doubt it.
All the CDs I have bought in the last 8 years or so have been soundtrack CDs produced by DigiCube- DigiCube being a wholly established and financed subsidiary of Squaresoft.
According to the RIAA's member company list, neither Squaresoft (or Enix or EA) or DigiCube seem to be members. The same seems to be true for just about every distributor of game/anime music I can find, except for Victor, Pioneer, and possibly a few others I missed.
So, please, how exactly am I lining the RIAA's pockets when I buy from companies that aren't even members or owned by members? -
Re:BRAVO! BRAVO!
You're suggesting that gamers have brand loyalty.
May I bring to your attention the fans of a game series that have switched consoles/platforms in order to continue enjoying their games? The game company is Squaresoft and the game is Final Fantasy

Will the website now be maintained?
I swear, I have never seen a website for a company/product that has been so poorly maintained than square's I wonder if the new company will be able to find people that notonly reboot the servers, but also ADD CONTENT THAT IS LESS THAN 4 MONTHS OLD!!!!

Gasp!

Lots of addictions...
My current addictions are:
- Grand Theft Auto III for PS2
Combining racing, shooting, dark humor and wonton viloence in one game. Plus, you get to be the bad guy for once :). - Tekken Tag Tournament for PS2
Practice at home to play Tekken 4 in arcades and provide maximum pain to my adversaries. - Final Fantasy X for PS2
Ooooo... pretty... - Yahoo! Eucher
No one else in my family plays, so I play with complete strangers. - Unreal Tournament on PC
Team Deathmatch and Domination with 3+ teams is good. Mods like Jailbreak and FragBall are also highly time-consuming. - Diamond Mine
Great little Shockwave game. I play this constantly at work :)
Wow, looking at the list, it's amazing that I'm bored all the time...
- Grand Theft Auto III for PS2

Re:Quicker, easier history of Squaresoft
I call bluff. Every article I can find, including Square's own Einhander webpage says that they both developed it and published it. Got some proof?
-
Re:If you're looking for more than Sierra game mus
I'm not quite sure if this is what you're looking for, but you can try Game Music.com for some video game soundtracks. They have your typical Final Fantasy series, and well pretty much any music from Squaresoft games.
:)They also seem to have non-RPG games soundtracks too.

multiplatform
Squaresoft is to go multiplatform, starting with Final Fantasy XI
However, their entire front page is a flash applet. Doh!
(Note: my domain name is a reference to number theory, not to any corporation. Square-free numbers are integers that can be written as the product of 0 or more distint primes (not divisible by 4, 9, 16, 25, etc).) -
The little computer
I am not a huge gamer- I get very involved in certain >role playing games but do not play them except at home.
I am very interested in the phone as a little computer, and the possibility of sharing data alongside voice conversation.
I am imagining someone driving around, using such a phone to find the personal ad of someone looking for a date,
traveling performers and sales people beaming a peddler's pitch to the computers of homes and businesses as they head into town,
live, coordinated field research between distant scientists, and group work between students in different countries.
All stuff we have now, in a much cruder form.
When intranets and the internet shift primary focus onto telephones and away from desk and laptop machines, there will be a subtle, slightly magical transformation. It won't be just more convenient- much of the information added to the net will be localized, much more intensely than it was before.
A person's computers are their individual "nodes" in the "ether" right now, but most computers are not tied to the home phone number or cell phone number. What happens if most consumer connections to the Internet go through a telephone?
Of course, the "fingerprint IP" or IPv6 technology is perfectly suited to a world in which everyone is connected, but everyone is potentially visible.

Killer app
All the hardware in the world won't matter for the Squaresoft fans out there. Square has said it will only develop for the PS2 just like it did with the PS1. Personally, if I were to buy a console, I'd get a PS2 just because of that. Square makes very solid games.

Re:Drudge report...
Square and Sony Pictures are going to do quite well with Final Fantasy. The animation is top-notch. Much better than what I saw in A Bug's Life. I'd say Pixar will get a big run for their money once Final Fantasy is released.
Not that I don't like Pixar.

Re:Not a chance...Final Fantasy 5 is not abandoned! It was released as part of the Final Fantasy Anthology, which is still available at Squaresoft's online store.
Arguably it's an inferior translation to the unofficial RPGe translation, but it shows that games that appear to be abandonned can still have value to their copyright owners. If everybody had emulated illegal copies of the game then they would most likely have not bought Final Fantasy Anthology, making Squaresoft think that people don't like older games. This just makes the problem of abandoned games worse, as Squaresoft no longer has any reason to release old games. If you like FF5 then buy FF Anthology, it's a very good game and they deserve money for it.
