Really? While I have all kinds of problem with the State of Michigan websites, I can use Vanguard with no problem from Japan.

The business website at https://cofs.lara.state.mi.us/... is still blocking me, despite all my emails telling them about it. Do they want my yearly business fee payment or not?

Probably because the pipelines in or the supplying wells to the area have insufficient capacity during peak demand periods and/or they can buy extra when prices are low in the summer and use it in the winter when prices are higher. This is standard practice in the industry. These are our Underground Natural Gas Storage in Michigan.

I'm just assuming you're saying that and not judging from personal experience, because last I checked, the State of Michigan monitors road quality state-wide and funds repairs accordingly.

Yeah, if your only exposure with it was on a fed contract, I can see why it might not seem like the bee's knees, but imo it's very underappreciated in the OSS community and a far better technical solution.

Actually, I presently work with a state government, and as such, they wanted to go with weather.gov rather than a commercial service.

It looks like the senior developers never did push the new version to production, as the weather stuff is still broken there.

From what I remember eGames was (and their older releases still are) pulling this type of stunt. If you were using some of the free ISP connectivity, your "spare" CPU time was sold to the highest bidder.

The illegal act is not notifying the end user of the software and its purpose. As long as you are notified, its legal. (The notice could be similar to the "privacy statements" from financial instutions -- "We value your privacy.... We share only with [highest bidding] business partners your confidential information.")

I don't think there's a law like that, unless you're talking about coworkers, and even then, it's really just a civil matter, not a criminal one.

Walmart actually turns out to be a great place to meet girls (not that I have actually done that). That may seem a little weird, but I don't really think it's a mental disorder, either.

Now, if you are just grabbing girls and trying to hump them (and skipping the "talk to them" and "get them to go somewhere" steps), then you probably would be breaking the law, but it be that you just "don't get out much" rather than you have an actual mental defect. You will probably end up with a criminal record, too, if you don't learn very fast. So you will have a record as a sex offender, and registered as such, and your name and address will end up on the Internet on the sex offender registry, which many states have.

In that case, whether your medical records are somehow less than fully secure may be the least of your problems.

Alternatively, you could hit their house. It really is amazing that a spammer would use their home address to register their spam business. In case you were wondering, the delivery joints in this area won't deliver stuff to this address anymore. Mr. Ralsky apparently didn't pay for *any* of the last 500 large with pineapple and andchovie pizzas that were ordered.

I'm a resident of MI, and I can honestly say our state gov really sucks. First we make firewalls and VPNs illegal with a super-DMCA-like bill, now we get some tough but unenforceable spam bill?
Of course it could be much worse; like our roads, bridges and public transportation system (ha!) have been for years.
Disclaimer: I live in Wayne and travel extensively in the tri county area, so if you live someplace in MI where the roads are nice raise your hand and point to it. For those of you who don't live in MI go look at a map of it to see the best thing about MI, ie how easy it is to show people where you live.

A few rich CEOs can buy maybe a dozen or so cars before the marginal utility starts to wear a little thin, but if you can persuade those CEOs to transfer enough of their wealth to their employees so that the individual employees can afford a car, then you've got utility by the boatloads.

Indeed, history shows us that other automobile employers had to follow suit and Ford's profit sharing program resulted in much cheaper cars across the board.

Granted, he also raised wages in order to prevent turnover and that heightened efficiency led to the cheaper cars. Happy workers are productive workers and, yes, they do actually pull more natural resources from the ground and produce more sprockets under the right conditions. (Note: Even if inflation is looming, the workers don't know it yet and they're still happily working harder.)

That's rather the point. If all you ever do is keep lowering employee wages until you hit the sweet spot, you'll be in a whole lot of trouble when you realize that you were on the wrong side of the labor supply and demand curve the whole time. High turnover was a warning sign to Ford that he (and the rest of his industry) were on the wrong side of the curve and they needed to raise wages. Ford undoubtably realized that one of the happy side-effects of repairing the situation was that there would be a heightened market for automobiles among the working class. Everybody wins. Ford builds his automobile empire and the working people get their cars. (Well, everyone wins except for us, the 21st century recipients of the negative environmental and social effects of car culture.)

jpmorgan, you're only correct when an industry is operating on the far side of the labor supply and demand curve. I also suspect you're not much of a Keynesian.

I suppose this all has some relevance to the recent situation. There was, afterall, a very high turnover rate amongst tech workers during the 90s who were chasing pre-IPO dreams. That sounds like (one of many) dead canaries in a mineshaft to me. (Remember: Although a few won the IPO lottery, the majority of tech workers didn't and suffered grueling hours, draconian IP contracts and vaporware products as a result. Meanwhile, corporate propaganda was telling us that the supply of workers was low when, in fact, we now find most tech workers are out of a job.)

Several states, counties, and municipalities have item-pricing laws that give consumers certain rights when the price charged doesn't match the price displayed. In Michigan, for example, "the seller must give you: (1) the difference between the amount charged and the affixed price, plus (2) additional compensation of ten times the difference, with a minimum of $1.00 and a maximum of $5.00 for each different item for which you are overcharged or be subject to a lawsuit. If the seller refuses your request, you may bring a lawsuit to recover actual damages or $250.00, whichever is greater, and reasonable attorney fees not to exceed $300.00. Similar protections can be found in Albany County, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Similarly, the finality of a sales contract varies from place to place. Certain transactions are subject to a "buyer's remorse" period during which the buyer can return the item for a refund. Most auto sales are subject to this protection, for example.

Bottom line: as usual, if lawyers get involved, the situation gets complicated.

By Michigan law only the driver license number, date of birth, and license expiration date can be stored. No other personal identifiers such as name, address or driving record can be included in the bar code or magnetic stripe per strict legislation.

Regrettably, the last state has given up on this. Congress now requires states to require SSN's on DL renewal/first time issuance in order to--get this--track dead beat parents.

Michigan threw a hissy fit about it and sued--but didn't get anywhere. (It wasn't the best case in my opinion.)

On the radio in to work today they were interviewing Michigan's Attorney General, Jennifer M. Granholm, about the sharp raise in gas prices. According to the major gas distributors, the price of gas at the retail level should NOT be affected. Any gas stations that have raised their prices significantly are doing so illegally.

She encouraged everyone that drives past gas stations, in Michigan, that have raised their prices greatly to report it to the attorney general website so that they can take action against said gas stations.

She also said to remember which gas stations are doing it and never by gas from them again.

I am also sure that the Attorney Generals of other states will also be looking in to similar cases in their states. The url for your state's attorney general is www.ag.state.$state.us and replace $state with your 2 letter abreviation.

you're right though, in your argument about contacting your reps. but since this is a state issue, everyone in Michigan should go to the Michigan State Government web page and fiugre out where their reps are.

Use tax on tangible personal property is similar to sales tax, but applies to purchases when Michigan sales tax is not charged. Use tax of 6 percent must be paid on the total price (including shipping and handling charges) of all taxable items brought into Michigan or purchases by mail from out-of-state retailers. It applies to purchases made in foreign countries as well as other states.

The MI speed limit went up to 70 mph in 8/96. In that year MI saw 1510 traffic fatalities, 141,007 traffic injuries and owing to 434,135 crashes. Overal fatality rate was 1.7. For '97, MI saw 1446 highway fatalities and 124,777 injuries in 386,795 total crashes (a fairly dramatic drop.) Fatality rate stayed at 1.7. Now, for the sake of comparrison, lets look at '95 (during this enitre year the speed limit was 65 mph): 1537 fatalities, 146,303 injuries in 421,073 crashes-- fatality rate of 1.8.

Is this conclusive? No. Is it interesting? Sure, if you like traffic data, it's pretty fascinating. Daddy loves his MDOT.

FYI, MDOT is trying to move towards a "rational" 85 percentile rule (where the speed limit is set at 85% of that which most drives go when no limit is posted.) I don't know what that would put the limit at, but I certainly like the idea of rational, experimentally derived laws, rules and regulations.

The sad state of affairs is that there aren't that many good hacks anymore. The people who break into computers nowadays tend to be too stupid to realize what a good hack would be. Creativity and the script kid tend to be an Xor situation.

If you take a look at Attrition.org's mirror of web page defacements you'll notice that both the Senate's Teleconferencing Server( Mirror ) and Michigan Public Sexual Offender Query ( Mirror )were broken into in the past week or so. Imagine the fun that could be had with the two servers. Imagine the damage. But these geniuses (rackmount and ieet respectivly) decided the best use of access to these systems was to replace the homepages.

I hope that there will be hacks worth hearing about, instead of what seems to be the standard defacement. I guess actually programming is too hard for these script kids.
