Re:Objective?Where did you get the idea someone has to be right? There is room for understanding and different viewpoints in much more than you think.
At first I didn't know how to respond to this at all. What do you know about how I think?
anything? Now thats some powerful relativism. (I kid. Sorta.)If we are to use the example given in the article, the MIT professor who is mostly defending video games against the alleged harmful effects, he would be 'right' if put in opposition to someone like Jack Thompson. Mr. Thompson claims that video games can cause violence in children, and states flawed (and probably politically motivated - but I can't prove it, lets leave that alone) studies to prove his point. I won't get into unpacking his argument here. But I think it is safe to say that the MIT Prof debunks a significant number of them. Violence amongst youth declining to a 30-year low for example. Another: carjackings have plummeted in North America since Grand Theft Auto 3 appeared. Those are things you can point to and say yes, the facts support it, the MIT guy is right. That's what I mean.
Oh, and realizing that you can't blame one source (like cable news) for facts or ideas you don't like, don't believe, don't want to hear, or don't know how to cope with.
Gee, thanks for the lesson. *rolls eyes*
Actually, that is not what I was telling you. My point is one of bias and to point out that when AsiNisiMasa (a quote from one of my favorite films, btw) writes: "This is what happens when reasonable people with an education tackle the subject objectively" he is showing his own bias (likely without realizing it) by lauding the people that come up with research to support his point of view, and also, in the same shot, implying those who disagree are not reasonable and educated.
Look, I agree in that I think this happens a lot. Groupthink is a powerful thing, educated or no. But you cannot just leap from there to 'everything is relative to everybody'. It is intellectually lazy and it does nothing to further the discussion. Indeed, why talk about anything if all reality is in the eye of each beholder? Kind of pointless. Unless I misunderstand you. Again.
Yes, there are other points of view, and they have been mentioned on Slashdot before, but my point wasn't to bring those up, but to point out that praising one point of view and, in the same context, indicating this is what educated people will think, shows a fundamental misunderstanding of life and truth and, in this case, research.
No, I get it. But there was research in the article. Very cursory and brief, but it was there.
You do understand the absurdity of you arguing with me about whether or not there is a right and wrong... right?

Re:Jack Thompson is a lawyer
Sorry. I linked to the WP article twice instead of to Thompson's homepage. Here's the proper link.

Some more useful information
http://www.stopkill.com/
Hmmmmm... last paragraph of this website may be useful as well. -
Re:Penny Arcade AddressFrom the website stopkill
If you want to help your state pass a constitutional law to prohibit the sale of these virtual reality murder and sex simulators to children, if you want any additional information or help, or if you want to help Jack Thompson in any fashion, including prayer, please contact him at 1172 South Dixie Hwy., Suite 111, Coral Gables, Florida, or phone him at 305-666-4366. May God bless you, keep you, and protect you and yours.
I'm sure we'll all send our prayer to your office most of us really think you need all the help you can get. You seem to be losing your grip on reality, and are suffering some kind of delusions of grandeur and just a bit of a suicidal in the way you've gone and made your self a highly visable target; alarmingly a realativly simple google search on your office address turns up as the number one link, your complaint against California-licensed attorney, Mark Geragos who was attorney for Scott Peterson in his murder trial; that complaint as required by California law not only lists your office address and phone number but your home address, home phone number and cell phone number.
We are begging you to realise life is not a video game, you have no free extra lives in the bank, when some whacko finaly tracks you down and puts a bullet in you it will most likely hurt you very badly or kill you, Please be careful -
Re:DisbarrmentI don't think he can sue you. The information is publicly-available and he's posted essentially the same information at his own website, StopKill.com:

Btw, has "Jack" opened himself up to legal liability for registering his website under a nickname, rather than his proper legal name? -
So...
Anyone wanna tell Jack Thompson exactly what they think about him? His info is freely available online at http://www.stopkill.com/ - "If you want to help your state pass a constitutional law to prohibit the sale of these virtual reality murder and sex simulators to children, if you want any additional information or help, or if you want to help Jack Thompson in any fashion, including prayer, please contact him at 1172 South Dixie Hwy., Suite 111, Coral Gables, Florida, or phone him at 305-666-4366. Re:UghFrom his website - http://www.stopkill.com/
Jesus said, "If any of you should cause one of these little ones to stumble, it would be better for you if a millstone were tied around your neck and that you be cast into the uttermost depths of the sea."
And...
Jack Thompson doesn't want your money. He isn't asking you to be a client. What he wants is for you to get up out of your chair because you're as mad as Hell about the video game industry's assault on our children and you're not going to take it anymore!
Interestingly, Network, the movie alluded to in the quote above, is rated "R."
So...Jesus hates "M" rated video games but is cool with "R" rated movies.
If that ain't comedy, I don't know what is.

Re:Please tell me this is fake...
http://www.stopkill.com/
From the site: "This site's purpose is to give you the means to contact Miami attorney Jack Thompson if you know of someone harmed as a result of violent entertainment"
Well it won't be hard to find at least a couple criminals that like the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies... Now what? -
Please tell me this is fake...
http://www.stopkill.com/
I hope the upper 90% of it was parodied by someone and the bottom like 10% with addresses and all is real. Or hell that the whole is real just proving the man has no sense of how to prevent being harassed by gamers, liberals, e-mail scanning bots (which subsequently leads to porn, home loans and medications), and who knows maybe just the total nut job who would go as far as stalking him.
One can only dream...I now have motivation for getting my law degree, to laugh my ass off across the court room when the judge tells him to go read the damn constitution...*snaps up from dreaming*...oh sorry... -

Re:violent gamesFirst of all, either you are Jack Thompson or you are just cutting and pasting from his web site (5th paragraph).
Secondly, I don't know the specifics of the other studies, but the study done at IU Medical was 1) funded in part by The Center for Successful Parenting which already beleives that media can lead to violent actions and is simply looking for support for their beliefs which makes the findings suspect in my opinion.
2) according to the press release for the IU study says that the kids didn't even PLAY videogames but:watched a car racing video game that had excitement without violent content and a James Bond video game that had excitement and moderately violent content. While watching the video games, the youths were scanned with fMRI to determine changes in brain activity. The youths were not actually playing the video game because of the limitations imposed by the MRI equipment, but they did have the feeling of participation since they pushed a response button each time they thought the video character should take action.
I don't know, but that makes it sound like WATCHING violence is problematic, not playing violent games.
Just because a study is published doesn't mean that it is unbiased or that the popular media won't distort the findings into something much more sensational.
