b _U:abrt_nr1m_spb3_1000 Subspace. It's free, and pretty fun. -
subspace, aka continuum
subspace, aka continuum seems to meet all of the requirements of the perfect wage slave game
not least of which because i sereptitiously play it at work all the time ;-)
the dying part doesn't matter, as you tend to die in about 12 seconds flat every time on a classic zone like trench wars, regardless of skill level, but this is actually part of the fun, so it is indeed beyond the concept of dying
and there is always somebody cooking up a new and different zone, like the ever-increasingly popular and well done capture the flag zone metal gear ctf
so the game is different and fun every time, you can play for 2 minutes or 2 hours and it is stil fun, and there is always something new to look out for
and it's free! -

Re:Small Rockets
If you're looking for a good free one then I suggest Subspace/Continuum. It's free and has been going strong for years.

Re:Stupidest thing I ever heardYeah, most people like to express their individuality. You might think much of that is just stupid vanity, and peacock BS, and you'd probably be right, but it doesn't change the fact that people have this urge.
Even in games people do this... In Half-Life people care a lot about their custom "spray decals" that others see. In another game called SubSpace people take pride in their tiny 12x8 'banners' and in their 'audio taunts'. And on websites like DeviantArt people actually PAY to have their user icons made professionally.

Re:A few ideas
If they are happy with Linux and still wish to use Windows for the odd game then take a look at VMWare
VMware? For gaming?
<uncontrollable laughter>
Have you actually used VMware for gaming? I have a dual P3 1.0 GHz with 1 GB of RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti 4400. SubSpace/Continuum, an old-school two-dimensional space shooter (easily gets 60 FPS on a Pentium II), peaked at 24 FPS on the above box under Windows 2000 inside VMware under Linux. And that's running at 640x480x8 with sound disabled. No way are you going to play Doom 3 inside VMware. -
Re:What no subspace?
Subspace was a classic beta online game that a lot of people played. Think asteroids meets quake. It kind of died out when it went commercial though.
Uhhh... (quickly does a ?usage command)... I've logged several hundred hours in the last year playing Subspace. Its not owned by Virgin anymore. You can pick up a free copy of the client, now called Continuum, here. The game is a fast paced mixture of strategy and action played real time with other players. There are usually about 1000 or so people playing at any time.
It takes about a week to go from bad to good. It takes months or years to go from good to really good. My favorite arena is Extreme Games. I always fly the spider. (D*$#@ cloakers!)
...So, really, Subspace still rules... but considering the beta came out in 1997, still not sure about Classic -
2d space shoot'em up called Subspace / Continuum
I'm still playing a really great 2d space shoot'em up called Subspace / Continuum made by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in the mid 95's.
VIE then dropped the game just after going retail.
It has really strong community supporting the game.
Now a new version of the game called Continuum has been reprogrammed from scratch to emulate the orginal version with added features.
Some links below.

Re:Ok, so it's 3 headed...
Try finding a game that allows you to run multiple instances of itself and you could at least do it windowed in multiple monitors (just expand them as much as you can), I've done that with continuum.

Try continuum
Continuum, almost 7 years in development if you include sniper and subpsace as its parents.

Re:Uh, what about the...
to mention their games tend to be kiddie games
That's what I hate the most, people who pass Nintendo off as a "kiddie console." Look, just because there isn't cleavage and blood in every other cut sequence doesn't mean it is a "kiddie console." I prefer fun over graphics (nmm nethack), which might be the reason I *still* play old NES games (emulated, of course). That also brings up another point, replay value. I'm still playing old NES and SNES games, yet I haven't touched my Playstation games in over a year.
Although I'll never buy either console anytime soon, Subspace keeps me well entertained. ;) -

Re:Why Not a PC?
On the other hand, in 16 years of owning various console systems (NES, SNES, PSX, DC, N64, GB, even a secondhand Atari 2600) I have never, ever seen a single game crash. Also, I have only once had to upgrade any console (the $20 video upgrade for the N64).
The only games on my PC are Subspace, Tachyon and X-Wing Alliance.
Oh, and Nethack of course. But Nethack hardly requires much in the way of CPU resources or graphics cards.

But will it be any good as...
playing a game that Sony already has (Infantry)?
If they bring in JeffP (maker of SubSpace, Infantry, Cosmic Rift) to help out with the game, I'll be more willing to give it a shot :)
His games are the only ones I ever go back to even after "retiring" for months. -
Re:Score v. PingOne of the only games that I've ever used that actually gave you an advantage when you lagged is Subspace.
Whats really cool about it is since vie dropped subspace from their list of supported games the community has been responsible for the server and client. They released their own server a few years ago and 2 weeks ago released their own client called continuum and they might even do a linux port
:) :) :) -
Re:Anyone tried to stop playing xpilot?
Or better yet, try Subspace. Same basic idea as xpilot, but taken to a whole new level. And it looks much better too. Yeah, yeah, so it only runs on Windows... Trust me, when you get addicted to this game, you'll keep a windows partition around just to play it. I know I do.

Re:hate cheaters?
that sounds a lot like what Subspace has been doing for a long time... server side monitors that check for game cheats like twister and others.
