Re:Not a fanboy post...the only real problem in setting up linux is that damn x.org config file
this is why I like SuSE; I could wrestle with X configs, printer configs, and generally waste a lot of time, but SAX2 and Yast's printer configs "just work". Get the install bootable CDROM
.iso from the boot directory, run manual install and point it back at this URL ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.3/ -
Re: Suse DistroI just spent last 2 weeks trying to get Autoyast to work. The tool is so broken,
First off, some rpms such as autoyast-tools etc, are not in the main FTP tree, but in some guys personal Ftp foler. ftp://ftp.suse.com/people/XYZ/RPMs/9.3/...
Next the tool fails to validate the control file , it generates on its own. i.e if you use autoyast to generate a control file, it will generate an invalid file.
Oh what I would give to have a good Autodeployment tool for all RPM based distros, RHEL, Fedora , Suse, Mandriva etc.
And if you think Autoyast is a good configuration tool, you haven't looked at webmin. When you have to manage different kinds of linux distros (don't ask me why ), nothing comes close to webmin.

Re:The concessions
no major linux distribution includes a JVM in its distribution
Ahem. This is just blatantly wrong. Go here and search for "java-1_4_2" if you don't believe me. -
Re:Old news...
Here's SuSE for free:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/
You can get the 9.2 Pro install disks, the 9.3 Live CD/DVDs - heck I have the Enterprise Server 9.0 disks here on my desk on CD-R so I must have found them out there somewhere too ...
With SuSE the cost is for support, not for the actual OS (although they may charge a nominal fee for the retail release in the pretty box with included media.)
And yes, if it weren't for the damn internally used web apps using ActiveX (or IE only features) I would be totally converted over at work. -
Tip of the iceberg
This is just the tip of the iceberg for Debian.
Especially in germany are a lot of organizations which were dissatisfied with SUSE services and switched to Debian.
According to Noèl Köthe's employer credativ, a company with strong Debian background, has made a SUSE to Debian migration for 30-40 organizations in 2004. -
Re:YOU Fixes MP3 Issues
More authoritative source:
http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2005-Ap r/0665.html
The real thing is that they're not including MP3 support by default due to possible legal conflicts, namely software patents ;) They're available through you as multimedia packs and come with the warning that they should only be used if "legal in your jurisdiction" or something to that effect. -
Music CostsWhy would we need sony music at ALL if bands can sell their albums directly to you?
Who's going to front the money to produce your music? Who's going to pay for the studio time? Not everyone has a DAW in their house, let alone the acoustical environment necessary for quality production.
I am a huge proponent of leveling the media playing field with appropriate use of P2P technologies, business models like Magnatune and tools such as the Creative Commons Licensing. Still, recording ain't cheap.

Re:off-topic-a-roonyThe community would benifit from having a Open Source java implimentation
Well, there are already at least a couple - Kaffe and GCJ, why not just contribute? Sun already did the hard part - theoretical research, design, marketing - for free. Actual coding of well-researched projects is not that difficult. You can even study Sun's source code to learn general concepts for your own project as opposed to just "lifting" it.
See, there is no shortage of C/C++ compilers and nobody is grumbling about AT&T not releasing their stuff under GPL. ...because it would allow distributions to distribute java runtime enviroments...
SUSE and gentoo already do, I would guess someone (Debian?) made their own decision not to ship Java rather than being disallowed by Sun.
Like you could begin writing Java-based GUI applications and then distibute them yourself without requiring your audiance to agree to restrictive licenses and download and install Java on their own.
Enjoy a license-free download! And the winner is:
Probably a bit to late for all that, unfortunately. Sun had it's chance and now Linux has managed code in the form of Mono (open source .NET implimentation) and C#. So sun has much more stiffer compitition then it would of had in the OSS world if they released a java runtime enviroment without restrictive licenses a few years ago.
Do you mean Microsoft released their own .Net implementation under GPL?? I would say Java platform is far more open than MS stuff. Gnome developers just have some unexplainable love for Windows.Forms as opposed to Swing. -
Re:Long story short....
You can get packet writing to CD-RWs on Linux with open-surce software - if you install the right kernel patch, pktcdvd, then create a pktcdvd block device, you can mount it read-write as a UDF filesystem and access it "just like a floppy". Sadly, it doesn't support CD-Rs
It's a bit tricky to find the patch and the utility to create the device node - there's a SourceForge page, but that's years out of date. Take a look at the mailing list. -
Audio Linux ((Time to try Linux (again))SuSE has a customized LiveCD based on 9.2 with audio as the focus. It worked well on all the boxen I have booted it. You can find it here or on one of the mirrors.
I'm hoping they will release it as an installable distro at some point. The demo scripts worked great for patching different applications through jackd w/ ALSA. Very cool.

Re:From TFA...I wish they would do the same for Gnome.
I believe this is what you might be looking for. Also, since Novell acquired Ximian I would think that they would be focusing a lot more now on Gnome instead of just KDE. Isn't that what they use on the Novell Desktop?

Re:Why?
Suse does not provide a personal edition, they do still provide a free edition. You can of course perform an FTP install, fairly painless, or you can download the DVD ISO of SUSE 9.2.
The press release indicated a free version of 9.3 to follow about 8 weeks after the release. -
Re:SUSE 9.3 Pro (03/09/2005) with desktop search
I bought SuSE 9.1 Pro, paid my 100 euros, and two weeks after that SuSE 9.2 came out.
That's of course bad luck, but not really SuSE fault. The usually announce the release of new versions one month in advance (like the probably will do today or the next days for their 9.3 release in April). And with a bit of research one can find out that SuSE releases twice a year, approx. April and October. But the possibility that someone accidentially buys a product shortly before the release of a new version is a problem which is not restricted to SuSE.
The SuSE ftp and yast provided support for my old 9.1 (e.g. KDE, thunderbird, firefox) packages, but didn't upgrade them to the latest, 9.2 releases.
No, of course not (at least not automatically). They only update packages for YOU to fix bugs and security issues. That makes sense to me. AFAIK, you can point Yast to the FTP version of 9.2 and make a distro update.
Apart from that, there are plenty of other ways to install new software on a SuSE installation, among them apt-get. This includes packages provided by SuSE employes for older versions, for example new KDE versions (including the KDE 3.4 beta versions).
Copying from friends is always an option, for every OS, but it defies the entire commercial OS price argument doesn't it :)
Sure. :) But contrary to certain other OSes, it is absolutely legal to copy SuSE Linux (and always has been). You only don't get official support by SuSE and no printed books...
last I checked only Home version was available for ISO download
The DVD is here.
this is hardly an option when you're on 64k ISDN.
Sure. But again this is then true for every Linux distribution, whether commercial or non-commercial.
To be honest, the thing I found most annoying about SuSE was the 'technical support' that I specifically paid for by buying my Pro package. After an out of the box installation, firefox kept crashing whenever I was opening it. The tech support reply was alogn the lines that they don't offer support for 3rd party applications, only for their product.
On the one hand, I can understand that they don't feel the obligation to support every single of the thousands of packages they provide with their distro. I see many of them provided as convinience. I'm a bit surprised, though, that they don't want to help with Firefox issues, since that, in my opinion, is one of the 'core' programs. In any case they have released (Yast-upgradable) updates for Firefox in 9,1 (and probably have also before that date). But I have no experience with SuSE support, so I can't judge whether they are worth their money.
Bye bye SuSE.
Well, that's the good thing about choice. :) -
Re:SUSE 9.3 Pro (03/09/2005) with desktop search
If only Suse didn't have this really annoying habit of changing versions every few months, then quickly reducing and eventually dropping updates support from older versions...
Patches are supplied for example via the Yast Online Update feature (YOU) for two years. They change their version twice a year, like many other distributions, too. What is your problem with that?
It sucks paying 100 euros for an OS that lasts for 6 months.
As I said, you use your distribution for two years. Apart from that, if you want to have always the latest distribution, you can also copy it from friends, or (with 1-2 months delay) install it via FTP or download the ISO (yes, they are available for both 9.1 and 9.2). And even if you insist on buying every single distribution, you can get the SuSE Professional update package for 55 Euro. So your '100 Euro' is off by almost 100%. -
Re:Put your money where your mouth is...
You've obviously never installed windows... I wish it was that simple. The only time it is ever that simple is if your using a vendor provided recovery disk. Otherwise you would boot to a nearly unusable system with absoultely no software other then a browser, media player and paint. If you want some functionality like a recovery cd install where you just pop in a disk and away it goes use Yoper. If you want something with more choice but still easy to use and install, get Fedora or Suse. (despite the distro wars, both are really nice) The Fedora install more or less consists of choosing whether you want to do a desktop install, server install, workstation install, or advanced install. Assuming you select desktop install, everything else is done for you other then a few quick questions (like name and stuff). Everything is autodetected (although you are asked to verifiy it and can change it if you so desire). The Suse install, while different, is just as easy. And regardless of your choice of distro, you'll be left with a freshly installed system that is secure, does not "call home" or have any ports open unless you specified differently and contains enough software that most users could probably get away with never having to install anything else ever. Not to mention an easy to use updating system that updates all of your software, not just select microsoft choices. As far as I'm concerned, Linux beats Microsoft and it is MS that needs to catch up and learn a thing or two from us.

Steve -

Re:PCI-Express and X86-64 fixes
... and, it works! Now I can escape from the login-forgetting w3m...
Currently I've only got single-head going, but everything's gloriously accelerated, including OpenGL. Even the open nv driver now works for the basics. Hurrah!
If you want the SuSE 9.2 RPMs for 6.8.2 RC3, read this. You'll need to manually copy a SaX2-produced XF86Config to xorg.conf unless you upgrade SaX2 as well - I haven't found pre-compiled x86-64 RPMs for that yet, so I think I'm going to have to compile some myself.
Ah, life on the bleeding edge. ;-) -
Re:Open Source 3D
Actually, no version of SuSE, that I know of, has ever included nvidia's binary drivers. It seems as if they do merely because they offer the ability to fetch them and install them for you in their Yast Online Update utility. That utility just grabs the fetchnvidia.sh script, verifies its signature, and then runs it to fetch the nvidia driver and install it for you.

Re:YOU GUYS ALWAYS MISS THE OBVIOUS...
So in a nutshell, being a regular guy using my computer, if there was more software available for linux, and it was clear how to acquire it, I would be switching. Most people, like myself just want to put a disc in a drive, install and not worry about it any more.
You want SuSE. It includes not only Linux and the basic utilities, but almost every Linux program (several thousands) known to man. The rest (several tens of thousands) you can get from Freshmeat.
The easiest way to get SuSE is to walk into Best Buy, Fry's, etc., and pick it up. You can also download it, but the download site is quite slow, so it'll take you DAYS...

eDirectory!Active Directory is pretty sweet and all....
In fact I stopped hating Microsoft (for a while) after my first 10 installs of 2000 Server and Active Directory. I fell for the hype, which was mostly true, until I used Novell Netware 6.0 with eDirectory.
eDirectory is the same, plus better and it runs on Linux, Windows and pretty much any place you want to install it. The licensing is a lot more straight-forward, it's better than Active Directory, runs on Linux and it's Novell. We love Novell now don't we?
I say the question is:Why Does Everyone Think Novell Still Sucks?

Re:OK - That Does It...
Ok. Video card. You can use the ATI fglrx driver.
Here are the SuSE 9.2 install instructions. Sadly, its not as easy as an NVIDIA card. But you will get hardware 3d and TV out.
http://suse.cbn.net.id/i386/supplementary/X/ATI/su se92/i386/fglrx/8.8.25/
Video capture. Supposedly, you can use the 'Gatos' capture project. This is designed for 2d acceleration, video capture, and several other ATI features. I've never played with it myself, since I've only owned standard radeons, never a AIW.
The site is here:
http://gatos.sourceforge.net/overview.php
But i've been browsing their mailing list, and it doesn't seem like the 9600 is supported. There is a LOT of work being done on it, though, and there are several devel list entries from the beginning of the month.
Sound&Modem, as you already know, will be a breeze.
Your gigabit ethernet card has drivers avaliable from the manufacturers website. This is here: http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?dI d=107&pId=10
I'm assuming you meant Yukon, not ukon.
This page here suggests that it is avaliable in the lastest 2.6 kernels (This is Gentoo, not SuSE)
http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:3PYpQxdJcwoJ: linuxforums.org/forum/ntopic31345.html+Yukon+SuSE+ 9.2&hl=en&start=16&client=firefox-a
This seems to suggest its in the default install:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/suse/9.2/i386/lib_mod ules_2.6.8-24.10-bigsmp_kernel_drivers_net_sk98lin _Tree.html
I'm not really sure, as I have little experience with Gigabit ethernet.
The broadcom wireles will present a moderate amount of difficulty, but it can be made to work, and if you are willing to spend a little money, it can be made to work easily. There are no native linux drivers, so you can either use ndiswrapper http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/, which is an opensource project that allows you to use the Windows drivers, or you can use linuxant's Driverloader, avaliable at http://linuxant.com/
The bcm4306 is confirmed supported under both, but I know from experience that driverloader is extremely easy to use, but ndiswrapper is slightly more challenging (still not impossible, but requires editing some configuration files by hand). SuSE has been working on integrating Driverloader into the distribution, but it hasn't happened yet.
Yeah, the floppy, the 7-in-1 usb reader, the DVD drives, etc, will all work without any difficultly. If you intend to use a USB dvd burner in SuSE, you will need to "sudo chmod +u /usr/sbin/cdrdao & sudo chmod +u /usr/sbin/cdrecord" which is a minor security risk. SuSE, for some reason, has redesign those two to not run as root, but it doesn't work properly for USB writers. That simple chmod command will fix that, and then you will be able to burn CD/DVDs under SuSE.
Here, http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-amd64/2005-Jan/ 0019.html Someone refers to using your motherboard, and it seems to work properly.
BTW: I've been checking the SuSE hardware database, and it seems to have started working, but it is by no means comprehensive. http://hardwaredb.suse.de/index.php?LANG=en_UK Once again -

Re:This is bad news, not good news
Pardon me for being insistent, but "openoffice.org" is a Web address, not a name. If the company that makes it doesn't want their customers to call it "Open Office," they should change the name. (They should probably change the name in any case. "Open Office" doesn't exactly stir the soul.)
That's not being insistent, it's being stupid. OpenOffice.org is the name of the software. The original poster was correct, you tried to correct him but looked like an idiot because you were wrong and then I corrected you. It's a very simple sequence of events; do try and keep up. As for what you think of the name, nothing you've posted so far inspires me to assign any value to your opinion.
Numbers.
A meaningless non-response with nothing to back it up, almost certainly indicating that you have no basis for your opinion. This is unsurprising.
No, it was supposed to be illustrative. Reading comprehension much?
Illustrative of what? That you don't hire competent people? That you change your hardware and software platform whenever you change IT personnel? It's certainly not illustrative of anything regarding open source software.
> We use open source software because we like the support, reliability and licensing freedom.
How odd. Because it has none of those three things.
I don't normally go in for personal attacks but you're really not a very honest person, are you? Starting from the end:
For you to claim that open source software doesn't provide licensing freedom is either stupid or dishonest. Since you're apparently capable of operating a computer with at least minimal competency I find it difficult to believe that you could be stupid enough to believe what you said. So you've apparently lying. Unfortunately you chose to lie about a subject that the Slashdot audience understands reasonably well so you're not going to get very far.
As for reliability, there are plenty of studies that show the reliability of open source.
And finally, support. I don't think this will be news to anyone except (perhaps) you but paid support is available for open source software. Linux is supported by distributions such as Redhat and Novell, Apache & Tomcat are supported by companies like JBoss and Samba is supported by a truly huge list of companies in many countries. As another poster pointed out, OpenOffice.org has commercial support available from companies like Blue Point
You shouldn't bother replying to this, but if you do be sure to bring some facts to back up your position. Your blind assertions do not impress. -

Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!
Don't be a fag! Join the campaign for more cute open source babes today!

I'd rather develop things with this babe...

Re:Supported by Novell??
Suse Linux 9.2 is already certified to comply with LSB 2.0. These other guys are just announcing their intent to catch up.
-
Re:In other words...
SuSE is LSB 2.0 compliant http://www.suse.com/us/company/press/ If you look at the summary, you see they mention Novell, Novell=SuSE suse hasn't struck out on its own, its been trying to get everyone to play nice for a while, first with United Linux, and now by backing the LSB 2.0

Using it...Im in and out with Opera since 97, and since Firefox 1.0 was released im using it again.
Yes, have adds, yes, have some compatibility problems, dont have the extensions that Firefox/Mozilla have, yes, is not open source (to differenciate with "free", as you can get it without spending money).
In the other hand, is pretty stable (well, using 7.6 beta 2, i can leave some room for problems), it displays slashdot pretty well (with firefox, sometimes the content move to the black area on the right, a problem that had also Tikiwiki as explained here), it loads FAST and is pretty compact, the ads are text based (bit dependant on content like gmail ones, and i could re-register if want them off), have a good mail client, it have even a good rss reader integrated, and surely have some other nice features that i dont explored yet. Uh, and of course, gmail works with it pretty well.
Why that last switch? Installed firefox 1.0 RPM from SuSE and started to have problems (well, the right col bug problem was there from some time), firefox sometimes dont load (have to kill the task to retry), sometimes load, but don't display anything on browser's window (seems to work, just not show) and sometimes works. Of course, had to reinstall most themes/extensions, and somewhat between 1.0rc and 1.0 decided to disable the open of new windows from web pages.
I could had try to install another/newer rpm or from other format, clean configurations and try without extensions/themes, and so on... but too i can play a bit more with Opera and leave that test for later.
About opera's "market share", well, that seem to run well in the embedded market. Being small, with low requirements, fast and multiplataform enough are good advantages there and where hardware is not at the top. And for normal desktops still is a good alternative.

Re:Internet Explorer Again?gee... why am i not surprised that Internet Explorer once again introduces huge security problems?
I was going to quote the same line with the same summary.
:-)The day MS makes IE a separate product from the file browser with no code shared, is the day most of these security problems will go away -- at least in that version and all future versions. Everyone on the old ms-win platforms will still be screwed, but then there will be some hope.
Me, I have a better solution now.

And...
Here's your monthly, "Microsoft Sucks", reminder from slashdot.

Windows will always be easier but not cheaperTom's point that Linux may be more hassle than it's worth will certainly discourage some techs from migrating but if they're discouraged that easily they wouldn't make the migration to any new platform no matter how good. I recently returned from a discussion with a fortune 1000 company that was looking at migrating to Linux and the number one driver for them is cost. Annual MS licensing fees costs them a fortune and most of their users use only three applications. They have a fairly homogeneous hardware environment and Linux runs well on most of their hardware.
Tom's other points like Windows peer to peer networking and ADS sign-on are absolutely critical in heterogeneous environments with Windows and Linux systems and vendors like Xandros that have made this functionality as easy as in Windows (Suse is making progress in this area as well.
The biggest impediment right now is finding large scale deployments where Linux makes sense. You need users who only have a few application requirements and those applications have to be available on Linux. Lack of applications is the number 1 impediment to adoption of Linux on the Desktop.
Another issue that comes up is how to manage those desktops and again, the same two players (Xandros and Suse) have decent solutions. Suse has Red Carpet (rebranded "Zenworks for Linux" I think) and Xandros recently announced xDMS which deploys and manages large numbers of desktops.

No mention of Evolution/SUSE/Open ExchangeWhen Maddog was asked about communications and e-mail applications running on Linux making a dent into Outlook/Exchange, I was kinda dissapointed to not hear mention of Evolution and Evolution Connector, or SUSE Linux Open Exchange Server (SLOX) migrations going on with companies like RICIS and IDL
.
I understand his point about Sendmail and developing countries adopting F/OSS, but the question was pretty pointed;
"any communications and e-mail F/OSS apps running on Linux that might make a dent in Outlook/Exchange?"
He could have shared the fact that......
IDL Technology Group in CA-US claims :" Together, Ricis and I.D.L. Technology Group have installed over 1,000 Openexchange servers in 2003 and have performed more than 340 Microsoft Exchange to SUSE LINUX Openexchange migrations, as well as over 150 migrations from other Email server platforms using various SUSE LINUX (Now Novell) approved migration tools.
Those are the kind of facts Senor Maddog needs to be dropping. Also, here's a online demo for SLOX 4.1
(BTW: I don't work for SUSE/Novell, RICIS, IDL) -
